After a couple of outages within the past week and even worse speed and ping tests, I have decided to cancel this joke of an ISP. I rely on the internet to do work related activities and this is a complete joke. If there was a "no-star" rating I would give it one. For close to $70 per month it's too expensive. I rather pay more for a Sprint aircard and Comcast at this point. Now I have to end up heading to a Starbucks or somewhere else where there is wireless to get on the internet. I encourage anyone considering Clear to stay far from them. I am convinced they are nothing but a fraud and if you work for them or a reseller, good luck getting paid. I have restarted the modem and PC several times today and these are the results I am receiving. They simply don't have the ability to serve their customers or enhance their network. I will try to get this out before my connection drops AGAIN!!! In fact, maybe I should post this from my iPhone. The connection is twice as fast and 100 times more reliable. Loc: Piedmont Ave. in Midtown, third floor, completely unobstructed view (at least 500 yards to next bldg), large single-pane windows throughout. The entire time that I have had this service, it has been a constant headache. When I do get a signal, it wavers dramatically, and is never faster than anything that I had experienced using my old DSL service. At times, it might even slump as low as my even older dial-up. I don't consider myself an extreme user, but I often work from home and need to send large files occasionally. There is nothing worse than to be on deadline and just as you click the send button, you notice that the bars on the receiver are once again scrolling due to a dropped connection. I am at the point now that I am preparing to pack the entire kit up and chunk it. I'm sure my old provider wouldn't mind having me back. SIDE NOTE: When I originally terminated my old service. I was very excited, and I told the rep from the previous company that I was going to get the new Clear WiMax service :-D. The rep actually laughed out loud and I wondered why. Just got off the phone with clear customer service. They straight up told me they are throttling my internet because im a heavy user. Yet they advertise speed of 6 MPS...effing thieves charging me $55 for 1MBPS! Do ur self a favor, stick with ATT DSL even if they have 1.5 MBPS...they dont throttle and they're cheaper... Don't believe the haters. I heard positive and negative feedback on Clear before I signed my commitment, so I has hesitant, but I signed up anyway. When my internet speed measured at 1.84 mB/s (not the 6.0 that they advertise), I complained and the company is overnighting me a modem upgrade at no additional charge. I don't have a cable connection, I don't have a landline. Clear costs less than the competitors, and their customer service is far superior. I read all the negative reviews, and I wasn't sure what to expect, but they have really been great so far. read more

Poor Clear. Bashed beyond belief. Don't worry, I've actually come to praise you, not bury you. In fact, I love this service, though with some very (ahem) clear reservations. First, the love: using Clear's mobile USB modem, I'm able to maintain Facebook, surf the web and, yes, post to Yelp from work, entirely disconnected from my company's network, keeping Big Brother at bay and allowing me to keep my job. For that and that alone, I grant Clear eleventybillion stars. Still, it ain't all peaches and cream. Here go the reservations: Speed: Clear isn't the fastest service. For me, that's not that big a deal. My internet needs are fairly minimal. I don't down or upload huge files. I don't watch much in the way of online video. Prior to Clear I ran a DSL and the speeds are comparable, which isn't to say they're all that great. But really, most people out there don't really NEED 10M/sec. The 2.4 M/sec I'm getting is good enough. Connectivity: My home modem's connectivity to the Clear service is sometimes questionable. I've had it for several months now and it seems over the summer, I only got a maximum of 3 out of 5 bars (in terms of signal strength.) During the less humid winter months, I've had 4. However, were I to move that modem from its perch on my second story window sill, I'd lose connection all together. And if you have double-paned windows? Forget about it. "Fortunately" for me, I live in an old, old building with drafty, single paned windows. Therefore I get good enough reception where I live. Strangely enough, my USB mobile modem get GREAT reception, even in the bowels of my windowless office. Then again, I may be located right under a Clear tower for all I know. Service: Service overall has been good. I had one 3 day stretch during which reliability was an issue. Connection (on the home modem) dropped repeatedly. I called and Clear rushed over a new modem. Unfortunately, they neglected to tell me that in doing so, they disabled my old modem, which meant I had to wait til (in theory) for the new one to arrive. I say in theory because once I called back to inform them that, no, I wasn't aware they disabled my old modem and no, I wasn't going to wait until the new arrived, they re-enabled it. Finally, the wife runs Mac. She connects easily to my home router, but was told she needs different software to run the mobile modem. This isn't too much of a problem, since I monopolize that thing anyway. For the record, it took about 4 minutes for me to set up the mobile modem on my PC. Still, if you own a Mac, you may want to research further. (Oh, and shave that goatee while you're at it, you smug a-hole. Yeah, I know you're arty, but enough with the ironic facial hair.) Location: East Atlanta / EAV I'm about 1/4 mile from the transmitter (I know because I've called tech support twice during the 3 weeks I've been on the service) and can't get DL speeds over 1mbps...upload is a very sad speed not even worth mentioning. I'm paying for DL speed up to 6mbps. This is not even close and sometimes the signal is intermittent altogether. I have tried multiple placements for the receiver, all in front windows facing towards the transmitter and still no dice. IN short I'm close to a transmitter and yet have slower speed than I did on AT&T DSL. Atleast when Clear losses connection it gets it back in a few minutes. The AT&T was starting to be out for days. If you're looking for an Internet solution that doesn't involve AT&T or Comcast; this isn't it. Either the technology is still to weak or there are to many folks in East Atlanta on the same transmitter. Either way it's slow and no were near the speed advertised (atleast that's the case in the EAV) UPDATE: I'm probably cancelling this at the end of the month. Service has gotten better...in fact it's gotten WORSE. Now I hardly have a connection and when I do it's similar to Dial-Up. Also, now when I call Tech Support I'm sent to a call center in India...when I had been talking to a friendly person here in the USA that was very nice and helpful. Now it's an Indian dude (no offense) reading off a script of trouble shooting items I've done atleast 30-40 times now. Down grading to 1 Star. read more

I got the service on Friday, and from Friday afternoon to Saturday around noon, the service was great. Saturday afternoon to now, it is just awful. In fact, just to get to this page from the Yelp homepage took me forever. 318kbps download, 45kbps upload. That's just about Dial-up speed? Awful. I moved and needed fast internet...FAST! I knew I was definitely not doing Comcast. So it was between the cell providers broadband cards, ATT and CLEAR. I tried Tmo broadband usb stick since they are my cell phone provider and It SUCKED. The internet on my phone was faster than my computer. Also they are not compatible with Macs. Cool so I hooked the usb to my desktop and plugged in my router only to be told it doesnt allow multiple connections. FML...this thing is going back! So it was between Sprint Mifi and CLEAR. I was going to go with the Mifi until the night before when i was looking up reviews on CLEAR when I saw an independent re-seller who knew what he was talking about. I sent him an email sometime around midnight asking him questions and he replied back. I asked where his store was but he doesnt have one. He offered to come to my place to test out what type of connection I would be getting because even if the coverage map says you'll have some sort of signal, there are factors like trees, location of residence, thick walls bla bla bla that one has to take into consideration. Anyway, we set up an appointment for 11.30 am, he shows up with his little netbook with the clear usb stick and shows me the type of speed I would be getting. Looked good so I said "sign me up". I bought the modem because I would rather pay for it upfront than lease it. That extra 5 dollars could be going toward a nice item of clothing or shoes or something! Upfront, I paid 150....modem, activation fee and monthly fee fo 40. I got the fastest internet(home only), it's pretty damn fast...I was able to watch True Blood online last night since I dont have HBO at the new place. Im just happy that Im no longer with comcast and my home internet is now faster than my cell phone!!! My only experience is with the Clear iSpot for Apple products "only" (wink wink) Pros: 1. Very easy to hack to work with any devices besides just Apple Products 2. No Contract! 3. Just $25 a month 4. Start and cancel your contract whenever you want, so if you only need one month of coverage, you can buy just one month. No activation fees. Cons: 1. 4G only. It's great when you have a strong signal, but a lot of the outlying metro-Atlanta areas are not covered. This device won't switch to 3G when there's no 4G signal. For that feature you have to get a different hotspot and sign a contract at $45/month. 2. Inconsistent speed. The iSpot is advertised as up to 6MB/s, but I rarely get that. Typically it's about 2MB/s or less, and my house is about 200 yards away from a tower. The iSpot has been discontinued by Clear as of last week. Stores and online are selling out their remaining inventory so if you want one of these, hurry! Google how to "spoof" or hack this device to use it with anything that needs a wifi signal. read more

I have been using Clear Wireless in Atlanta for about 10 months now and it has been a love-hate relationship. When it works (usually in the Winter when the trees are bare), I can get up to 8-10Mbps. The rest of the time it is 1-2Mbps. WiMax is very line-of-site; so much so that positioning the home modem 3" to one side or turning it 5 degrees can make the difference between an excellent and a lousy connection. You cannot just place the modem anywhere and hope to get a good signal- unless you are very, very lucky! Trees interfere with the signal- dramatically. Rain also causes issues- usually dropping me to 1/2 of normal speed. I have also been told by a clear rep that service above the 9th floor in an office building is not very good as the WiMax antennas are directed downwards. WiMax is NOT for playing online games as the initial latency is 100-150ms (compared to 10-30ms on DSL). Clear also erratically implements caps on usage- usually during the afternoon peak hours but sometimes also at 3am in the morning. There is no rhyme or reason as to when/why they use capping, but the bandwidth pattern makes it very obvious that they are. If you go WiMax, make sure you get the clear rep to identify the direction of your closest WiMax tower(s) as you will need to direct the antenna of the modem in that direction to get the best signal (the side with the Motorola logo). read more

We live less then a mile from the tower that Clear had just put in. Corner of Lawrenceville Suwanee and McKendree Church Rd. Lawrenceville, GA,. is where Clear had placed the tower. A rep from Clear has been door to door knocking and soliciting service. Although we have a 'No Soliciting' sign on our door, he continued to knock at our door, anyway. We never do business with people who go door to door. After experiencing a lot of down time with our Internet service through Comcast, we decided to give Clear a call to see what they have to offer. There customer service tech told us that we would receive 4 lights (bars) at all times. The more lights (bars), the better speed you will experience with your service. We have not had our service for a week and have never received 4 lights on our modem, which we purchased, since we did not want to commit to a 2 year contract. The lights on the modem will go back and forth between 1 light to 2 lights, with the occasional 3 lights, though never for long. Although Clear advertisings Super Fast Speed, we have yet to see such results. Our connection has been lost several times today. We have done all kinds of research, trying to find ways to improve the signal strength, to which we have no luck. We have tried placing our modem in other rooms of the house and still do not receive a stronger signal. Granted, Clear might be less expensive then other ISP Providers, but the service we are receiving is not worth the less expensive price. This is just our experience. Yes, while we should be receiving great results from being walking distance from the tower, we have yet to have been impressed with the service. Clear service might work for you. It certainly is not working for us. I have a fast computer and when we had Comcast, our up load times were lightening fast. Clear upload times remind us of dial up 56k days. We have even conducted several speed tests online and are definitely running slower then we have ever expected. Before considering Clear, as it might work better for you. I would highly recommend asking if one of there techs can come out to make sure that you will receive the signal as they claim you would receive. Don't just go by what they tell you on the phone, have them come out and prove to you before you commit to any agreement with them, that you will truly receive a signal. After a few years of giving Clear a try, I've finally decided on jump on the Clear 4G bandwagon and write an update and up my star count from 3 to 5. There's a caveat however. I think the customer service is sometimes awesome and sometimes horrible, and when I say horrible, I mean like lose some hair from stress horrible (speaking from personal experience here). I've discovered that when it comes to ease of setup and a get up and go type of easehowever, Clear can't be beat. Now the spottiness of Internet speed initially stressed me out real bad. But in the past 2 years or so, there speeds have increased and I have yet to have ONE blackout. That's impressive indeed. Should be noted, I didn't need extraordinary speeds for my purposes and price was important to me. Clear has brought my phone/Internet bill down $100 a month, so as long as it worked I would have been happy. In my previous review I wrote that when I started with Clear I had issues with Internet and also some phone issues. After having worked through that (thanks to new satellites coming up in our area) my speeds have been consistent, no outages, and still the same great low price. What made me really desire to write this update however was the customer service I received instore at the Buckhead location (Peachtree Rd NE / Piedmont Rd NE). Is Clear a scam or a just a joke? you decide. To me, it seems like we are paying for more "throttling" than actual service over here. I started using Clear and in the first few weeks I can see that after troubleshooting everything the right way, this is some of the worst speed and consistency i've ever seen. Also, if anyone wants to play XBox Live with it don't even try! Ping rates with Clear are always over 100ms, due to the funky nature of their "WiMax" system. Therefore, Clear does not work with XBox or any other gaming console that require an average of less than a 100ms latency to operate properly (why they think it's not important to reveal this major flaw to such a large part of the customer base *millions of customers*, I have no idea) Using XBL, there is always disconnection and when there is no disconnection, there is not a single game without lag. I've been reading Clear's website forum responses to their (mostly angry) customers, and the responses sound like they are copied and pasted from a pre-scripted sheet (and with a lot of peculiar grammatical errors typical of non-native English speaking reps). And finally, Clear doesn't seem to understand that customers don't want to hear a long, drawn-out excuse explaining why the Clear system can't handle the customer "heavy use". They call everything "heavy use"... and that's when they start throttling your service. bologna! read more

This is the worst internet service on the planet. One star is far too good for clear. The service is spotty even with new towers. The signal sucks and makes watching a netflix movie next to impossible. Constant fluctuations in the signal want to make you pull your hair out. I moved a couple of miles down the road and had no service at all. I didn't have a contract so I called to cancel one saturday morning. Guess what, Their cancellation department is not open on the weekends. All other departments are open but they won't let you cancel your service. I had to wait till the next week which was the beginning of the next month and they hit me with another $45 charge. When I asked for a refund on the fee since I will not use the service in which I am being billed and there is a record (which they acknowledged) of me trying to cancel my service before the end of the month I was basically told to go pound sand. The service rep actually told me that if it were her she would have acted more responsibly and called a week earlier. I cannot stress what terible customer service this company has. I have never been talked to or treated in this way in my life. The worst, just absolutely the worst company to deal with. If my options were to go back to snail mail or clear I'd go out and buy a book of stamps on the spot. STAY AWAY FROM CLEAR!!!!!!!!!!!! Thousands of bad reviews can't be wrong. Customer Service is HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!!! You have to wade through a menu of a menu of a menu when you call just to get to someone who barely speaks English. The Internet connection itself was super slow and it would cut in and out (which is super annoying since I'd be watching a show and as soon as it got to an intense part, the internet would have little to no connection). I called them about this and told them I don't appreciate paying $45/month for this horrible service. They told me they "couldn't" cancel it as it was mid-month but to call back a few days before my payment automatically came out of my account. I have NO idea what they're talking about - I've worked at enough companies and billing departments to know that that's not true. They could cancel me then but just didn't want to. I've it's been good having reasonably quick 4G service, but during the past two months they've gone from Clear to Cloudy!!! I had a pod and a home hub set up - never had any issue until I arrived home one day to find that it had magically gone from 5 bars down to one. I swapped out the pod for the hub at that location, and still the same thing. Tried all of their power reset/config options - no good, still crappy signal. Sooo, I ordered a $99 antenna, which also didn't help any. What's seriously disappointing is that I can literally see the tower which should be the one I connect to, but yet signal is now under 10% and unreliable!!! If I drive a half mile away, signal is great - so I guess Clear thinks I should move into the middle. of the Freeway!! I've spent 2 hours with them on the phone or in chat as they "diagnose" their faulty tower, and then proceed to tell me the tower is fine. No, the tower SUCKS and your staff is incompetent. I think they are trying to push customers off of the service on purpose. If so, they just earned one more cancellation from me. read more

When a service says it's available in the Atlanta area, someone from Roswell has good reason to be skeptical. I stopped by a kiosk in Perimeter Mall, and since I knew a lot about the service I was ready to leave with my new modem in short time. All I had left to do was insert my SS# for "security reasons" because I was going to rent the box. Well, that didn't work out so well. The block I have on my credit for any instant credit had me walking out of there empty-handed, and I was pissed. They did give me a cust service number to call, and things were resolved very quickly. I originally went to the mall on a Thursday and they sent one to my house and I got it Monday. Setup couldn't have been easier, and with a 2nd story window facing north (towards the tower the woman in the mall told me to point it at) and I have the max 5 bars of power, and everything works great. To compare it to Charter (BOO!) I went to speedtest.net with my laptop using Charter and then using Clear. Charter's numbers showed I could download an MP3 in 8 seconds, a video in 53 seconds and a movie in 20 minutes. Clear wasn't as fast, but was very very close. It showed I could download an MP3 in 9 seconds, a video in 60 seconds and a movie in 23 minutes. And that's with the Clear "fastest" plan. I can live with such a minor drop in speed for the simple fact that I no longer have to deal with Charter and it is also cheaper than cable. read more

Steer clear of CLEAR!!! I wish I could give less than 1 star. I hate to do this because CLEAR is/was such a great alternative, but they now have sunk to "SUCK" level. I have been a user for probably 2 years. More correct to say I have been paying for 2 years, and trying to use. While traveling, I tried to connect to clear with no luck. I was unable to use my CLEAR "service" while on my trips. Came to find out that I needed to upgrade my USB modem... thanks clear for letting me know! Later, I spent several hours online, and found the information for the upgrade on a non-CLEAR website. No refund/apology was forthcoming from CLEAR. Now, for the last several months, my service has sucked. I have spent hours and hours (days?) on the phone with "customer service" trying to trouble-shoot and fix my problem... At one point a couple of months ago I read a post that claimed that CLEAR was "throttling" their service. I took it with a grain of salt, as I thought it might be someone trying to whip up support for/against internet neutrality. But, I couldn't quite shake what that post was claiming... Now, I have just gotten off the phone with CLEAR (again). It is now CLEAR that they ARE throttling my usage. I get less than 1 Mbps (last test was 0.87) download speed on my "unlimited" account which is supposed to support up to 6 Mbps! This has become typical! It seems I was "abusing" the system by trying to watch a NetFlix movie yesterday. I say trying because I spent almost as much time waiting for the streaming download to catch up as I did watching. The customer rep said the only solution was to limit my use for a week or so. So, the only solution to them automatically limiting my use is for me to voluntarily limit my use, on my "unlimited use" account?! Unacceptable!!! Outrageous!!! I told the rep that it would be understandable (not great, but acceptable) if they were to limit me to the average download speed (4 + Mbps) when I exceeded what they could handle, but to limit me to 1/6th the average speed was not going to fly! Why limit those who wish to use the service most, to 1/6th of what the average user needs?! (Throttle me back to average maybe, but not to this extent! I can't even check my email properly at this "speed".) My advice: Steer clear of CLEAR!!! I love the concept, but the execution of this idea crosses over from incompetent to abusive. If I had more time/resources, I'd sue the $h!t out of CLEAR and get my money back... I will be canceling their "service" this week. read more

CLEAR WIRELESS IS OUT OF CONTROL!! CRAZY CUSTOMER SERVICE - MYSTERIOUS FEES AND FINES - WON"T STOP CALLING!!! Earlier this year I tried Clear Wireless, understanding that it's a fledgling service. The sales clerk told me that the plan was month to month. I got the equipment in the mail a short while later (Sierra Wireless hot spot). The device is pretty good, but has some serious problems. It over heats... so I experimented and found that a 100 watt heat sink from a computer server managed to keep it tolerably cool. It got poor reception, which could be improved, but only marginally. I constantly tried to get through to their customer service. the waiting was interminable and when I got through they might address the issue at hand, but there was no follow-through beyond the moment. At length I contacted Clear to let them know the unit was not working for me; I tried, but it was useless. They conformed that it should not work for me. They ultimately (after many lengthy calls) took the cancellation order. And directly called to reinstate the plan. I called many more times, hours on hold and canceled again and again. They would not stop calling. Mid day at work, in the evening, even in the middle of the night. Pay money to reinstate your service. I kept telling them to cancel. They then claimed that there is an early termination fee. I went back to where I got it and they denied this. More hours on hold with customer service and they denied having a contract; then demeaned the money. They have wasted a fortune harassing me, someone who really tried to be their customer, researched the technology, posted many positive reviews on the web. This is not just bad business, but anti-social behavior. I offered to go to small claims court, they declined. I offered to take them to court for harassment, they were not interested in that. I asked to speak to a supervisor, they refused! I offered to contact the senior executives at Clear to complain, they did not seem interested in that. I offered to trash them on the WEB and they seemed OK with that... I insisted that they put me on their DON'T CALL LIST. THEY CONTINUED TO CALL!!! NO - I DO NOT WANT CLEAR WIRELESS!!! I got my notice Thursday from AT&T that they would be capping data usage at 150Gb/month. The link to their website guide indicated this would be equivalent to 10 Netflix HD movies/month (which under my 1.5mbps DSL service weren't "HD" to begin with, stalling 10-15 times per viewing). We watch 10/wk at least. Called Clear, received my wireless router the next morning and have been viewing in HD for the first time ever. According to Speakeasy.net my download speeds are consistently over 11mbps, 1mbps upload. That's almost double the 6mbps that Clear promised and 10X what AT&T delivered (1.5 mbps only guarantees .75mbps if you read the fine print). No jitter, no latency. No slowdown during severe thunderstorms. Do be clear (no pun intended) I live 2000' from their nearest tower with an unobstructed view (except for trees) from my house, so Clear may not be for everyone, but I am delighted and confident enough that I cancelled AT&T today after just 4 days of my 30 day Clear trial period. Only weakness is that the Clear Wimax router is not as strong as my Linksys, although the 3 bars on my laptop still yield the same bandwidth. Does anyone know if I can cable connect my Linksys wireless router to to my Clear Wimax router to improve range? It doesn't seem to matter but why stick the Linksys in a box if I can use it to my advantage? By the way, I do NOT have to give up my bellsouth.net email address even after dropping service - that makes it an even easier switch! Very bad experience with this company. I live in the Austin metro area and the speed wasn't even close to 3G, when they sold me unlimited 4G. I had to reboot the thing about 5 times a day. When they are good, they are very, very good but when they are bad, you won't even recognize yourself after they get you to a rage place you didn't know existed. I don't have any complaints about the service since I was generally pleased with it. However, their customer service and technical support departments cannot troubleshoot problems and once you have one there is no solving it. Although each person I spoke with was very nice and polite, they didn't know what the heck I was talking about most of the time and each one of them gave me incorrect information. They were even doing a system upgrade in the middle of the day during a work week so I had to callback to cancel the plan. To add insult to injury, I cancelled the day after the monthly payment was withdrawn from my account and they are going to charge me a $40 early cancellation fee for a device that is not even working. This company is TERRIBLE and I would not recommend thier service to my worst enemy. I agree with the person below me. By fay, I originally signed up with Clear last November. I've been a customer since then, and I have to say, 45 dollars a month for unlimited internet ( where available with the Mobile hotspot Device ) has thus far been the most convenient thing for me. Its the cheapest, and theres no cap of service. Im a relatively heavy user, and I have not experienced any restrictions on my service whatsoever. Furthur more, I upgraded to an actual modem W/my original Mobile hotspot plan, and for the next two months Ill be paying 15 dollars LESS for the uprgrade, then will be charged 60 a month for the bundle which is within my budget. I will say its not the fastest service I ever used compared to verizon DSL or other network providers that use landlines or actual internet equipment installed in households to provide efficient service, but for the price, the device mobility/price, and the overall experience I've had with Clear, I can vouch for them as being a company meant for those looking for internet at a cheaper price, and dont need the speeds of those who possibly download huge files daily, or require absolute speed for their cyberspace needs. I have successfully watch netflix movies, play online games via the PS network, and downloaded music/videos at fair speeds. I guess you will have to try them out to see for yourself. I just hope they construct more network towers, I believe this company has the capabilities to become one of the best network providers out there.. read more

Here's a tip: Does your connection manager software pop-up have a white background or a black background? If you are NOT getting connected and the background is white, that is why. Got sick and tired of my DSL going out while working from home and decided to give this a try. Thankfully the DLS was working the day that my USB device and their setup USB arrived as I could not get a connection. I called customer service, they tried a few things from their end but it still just took me to the Clear home page. Fishy, because that was certainly online but I could not browse elsewhere. They started a trouble ticket saying they could work on the issue on their end and I should try again "later". Well, "later" I tried and tried but still got the road block. After a few weeks and still no connection I called customer service again and was told to navigate to their support page and download the NEW setup software and then I FINALLY got a connection. He told me that the cute little USB fob they sent preloaded with their software had the wrong version. They had since updated the software and the latest version available on their site would now work. Now I have the connection manager software with the black background and all is well. They have a tower by Stone Mountain which I have a clean view of so it's nice and strong at my house but will not work inside my guy's "dungeon" of an apartment in Brookhaven, so caution there as well. Now I'm pleased with this service and I'm plotting my escape from AT&T with the help of my magic little Clear device! read more

Yesterday I signed up for service and it's been a pretty good experience so far. Previously I was previously using my T-Mobile phone to connect my laptop to the Internet. I had to get a new phone last month (my other one fell in the toilet) and apparently they got smart because the tethering service now alerts them if you haven't signed up for the extra $14.99 plan. Anyway, I did that and found out that I use a lot of data and they don't like that. The slower connection after a day of using it was frustrating. Enter Clear. I would have ordered online, except I wanted to connect NOW. Equipment delivery only takes a day, but it was the weekend... I used their website to search for locations since the one in Midtown Atlanta near my house closed last year. I found a few and I called to see where they were located and their hours. None of the phone numbers worked (hopefully that's not a sign of things to come). I ended up going to Best Buy. They have a Clear representative working who can sign you up and you buy the actual hub/modem/router/whatever from the store. She was kind of bitchy, but not so much that I didn't buy anything. Aside from getting an error this morning that said "Please Insert Battery" things have been great. It's only Day 2, so let's hope my next review update is to 5 stars and not a downgrade. They have a 15-day money back guarantee and I definitely intend to use it if necessary. read more

Update 4/15/2011: I have been using Clear for about two years now and will continue to use it. I can stream Netflix, Amazon, and NBC video content and can also stream audio feed to Sonos. The uptime is excellent, It has been down once, for less than 6 hours, in two years. As a former Comcast customer, I recall monthly outages that would last a day or more... never again. Finally, at $25 a month you cannot beat the price. If you are thinking about making the switch, I would go with the cheapest service first, you can always upgrade if it is too slow. Rating up graded to four stars. Old review: I have had Clear for about a week now. I purchased the service so that I could run my new Sonos music system. And in this task Clear works flawlessly. I have not had any service outages despite hard rain and other adverse wireless conditions. I decided to go with the $25/month option which is much cheaper than either Comcast or DLS. The savings is magnified if you don't need a land line or cable TV service which I think are required with Comcast and DSL. I only gave Clear 3 stars because internet browsing on the service, especially when I am streaming audio, is noticeably slow. Fortunately, I have other access options to faster internet (neighbor's wifi, work, etc.), so this isn't a deal breaker for me. However, I can't really imagine using Clear as my only outlet to the internet. With that said, I haven't tried the $45/month option, which is supposed to be 6x faster than the $25/month version. read more

I gave Clear Wireless every chance that I possibly could. From the internet service itself to the outsourced, card-reading customer service, this is just not a company I can support any longer. Speeds were never a concern for the entire first month of service. Once I settled with Clear, speeds between the hours of 11:00 am and 2:00 am were pathetic, topping out at around 70kbps. Sometimes pages never even loaded, downloads frequently timed out and streaming was never a good option. I wouldn't recommend Clear Wireless to anybody...ever. If business continues like this, I don't see this company existing in a few years. read more

If I could give Clear zero stars, I would. I was a customer for 2+ years, mainly because every time I tried to cancel they would credit my account. My internet began to "hiccup" about a year in, to the point where playing a one-minute YouTube video was impossible. I called Clear and was informed that, since I was a heavy internet user, they had throttled me-according to Speedtest.net, to about 0.20Mbps. The decimal point is not a joke. I called and they told me they would have to charge me a "termination fee" to cancel when I didn't have a contract. Then they tried to charge me for my modem, which I had bought outright when I signed up for the service. I am now a Comcast customer and pay the same amount as I did for Clear. The last time I tested my speed, I was getting 21.91Mbps, literally 100x faster than I was getting for the same price with Clear. As for the customer service, as other people have noted here, it is beyond awful. In one exceptionally bad case, an employee was blatantly ignoring me while I was alone in a Clear store, trying to pay my bill in cash because my credit card had been stolen. He was on his cell phone, talking about how this "b*tch" in the store was bugging him. I took out my phone and recorded his conversation. When he realized what I was doing, he ran around the desk, took my phone, and literally chased me out of the store. At that point I was on the phone with customer service, and though they heard the whole thing I still made an official complaint and sent them the video. I came back to the store two days later, and the same employee was still working there. I wouldn't go in the store, and called Clear. They shut off my internet because I hadn't made a payment. So glad I am no longer a customer, and I completely understand why they are going bankrupt. read more

I cancelled my Clear today due to inconsistent service and service outages. Clear would not give me a pro-rata refund but said I could keep the service until the date I had paid through and then call back and wait on hold again to cancel. This puts a bad taste in my mouth that they want to inconvenience me due to their lack of internal systems and process - I have a bad taste for their service now. I cancelled because I had to reset their modem periodically, many times service was slow - under 1Mbps - sometimes being so slow to be unusable, and a few times it was just out. Not a stable enough service for me. Note this was with 4-5 bars of signal and fairly close to two towers. I was paying $35/month. I had AT&T before - their 1.5Mbps down service - which was very consistent at least - and mostly delivered 2Mbps down. You can get it now for $20/month. Instead, I went to Fry's and picked up a cable modem (Motorola SB6120) and signed up with Comcast for $35/month. They installed next day. And I'm getting 30 Mbps down and 4 Mbps up. That's about 10 times the down service for the same cost as Clear. And it's very consistent with super low latency. I call that a win. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB against Clear for their cancellation tactics. I would recommend AT&T ($20/month) as a better service and value than Clear. And Comast ($30-35/month) as a much better service and value. read more

$300 plus dollars later and I'm very sad I signed up with Clear. The internet coverage was adequate. However, the customer service is terrible. Soon after taking the modem home, I decided to add voice. They (sales person at Best Buy) promised I would get the bundled price of $45 for internet and voice. However, when the bill came, I was charged $81.27 a month instead of $45 + taxes. When I called to complain they basically said, "tough" (in a nice of course.) So I decided to drop the service rather than continue to pay the $81.27 each month. Clear then stuck me with a $101 dollar cancellation fee. When I protested the cancellation fee, they basically said, "tough" again (in a nice way of course.) Clear has taken me to the cleaners for practically no service in return. I'm sure there are some Executives at Clear getting large bonus thanks to suckers like me. Please, don't be a sucker, go somewhere else. read more

The modem I was sent never received a signal, no matter where I placed it in my house (north metro Atlanta)... I even took it outside on my deck and tried to receive a signal out there with no luck. I had to call Clear 2x to request return shipping labels, and then had to call repeatedly to request my refund before the 30 day window expired. When the refund FINALLY hit my bank account, it wasn't for the full price of the modem. So, I got gouged for a product that NEVER worked for me. Do yourself a favor and stick with AT&T. At least they're reliable and their speeds are what the advertise. CLEAR is a scam and a rip off. read more

If you just need an internet connection Clear is fine. Surfing, SD Moives and TV sure, it can handle it. But for me the 6 down cap was too slow especially for 50 a month. I would clock the speed regularly with www.speedtest.net and consistently got around 4.5 down (which isn't very fast but is usable.) Rarely it climbed up to the advertised 6 down, but it would also dip down to around 3. I was closing in on the end of my trial month (after which I would have been locked into a contract) and I noticed a considerable slowdown (.45 Down.) So I decided to bale while I had the chance. I went to Comcast and got a plan for 30 a month with no contract and 15 down (I haven't gotten it yet so I don't know how fast it actually is.) I wish I would have listened to all the reviews on Yelp, but I figured it would be fine. I could see Clear working for the casual surfer, but anything more than that, forget about it. read more

Ripped me off and now refusing to honor money back guarantee. Clear Billed me more than originally quoted (extra $18.82) They double billed me on the same date (2x $71.04) I used for 3 days and was not satisfied with quality so called and cancelled. Have cancellation #, ETC. Now, I am Fighting with them to get my money back. They won't honor the 100% satisfaction money back guarantee. Billing department wants to pro-rate my service, including the equipment cost that I returned. Entire transaction was in their 30 day guarantee period. Service was unacceptable and did not refund as said they would and not honoring money back guarantee. Avoid them like they plague. Complete rip off. read more
