Wally's Pastry Shop holds a very special place in my heart. Wally was a good friend of my father,…read moreand that alone tells you the kind of man he was--kind, generous, and deeply rooted in his community. In 1991, Wally made my wedding cake as a gift, and it's something I will never forget. Not just because the cake was absolutely beautiful and delicious (it was!), but because it was made with love. That's what sets Wally's apart--you can feel the heart behind everything that comes out of that kitchen. The pastries are classic, fresh, and timeless. Nothing trendy or overdone--just perfectly executed desserts that remind you why bakeries like this matter. The flavors are authentic, the quality is consistent, and every bite feels like a tradition being honored. The addition of Gelato brings me straight back to Italy! Wally's isn't just a pastry shop; it's a piece of history, a reminder of a time when relationships mattered and food was made with care. I'm grateful for the memories, the kindness, and the incredible desserts that have been part of my life for decades. I miss hearing all of Wally's stories, as a pastry chef making hearts like Sinatra, and many Presidents happy! He loved what he did! If you're lucky enough to enjoy Wally's, know that you're tasting more than pastry--you're tasting legacy.

Have you not been here? Then GO!…read more Cheesecake by the slice! Baked goodies like carrot cake and flan! An array of flavors to satisfy most anyone! And more! Yeyo's is both a blessing to my appetite and a bane to my waistline. But live a little! Their cheesecake by the slice gives you a chance to sample what you might like and the QUALITY is first rate. Why battle the vestibule crowd at the Factory if all you really want is the cheesecake? Because at Yeyo's you can pop in, peruse (okay, fawn over) the selections, and walk out happy as a lark. Our last visit had us getting three (generous) slices: plain with strawberry sauce on the side, turtle with the caramel sauce, and a Reese's. Three huge portions and that ran us under $20 - what a win! There isn't any real seating at this spot, but they are amply prepared to provide all that you need to enjoy/destroy your cheesecake or other goodies on the go. Hot tip: these slices are very generous and *very* rich, because this ain't no back-of-the-package recipe; they are artisanal and absolutely perfect, so go slow, or even better, share! (yeah, right) Parking is easy, pricing is reasonable and well below the fabulous value, and the service is quick & friendly. It's a spot you might have passed a bunch of times, but they are open and ready for your sweet tooths to drop in and try it - do so!

I love a lot of spots around the metro, but let's be honest, some of them get crazy busy and you end up waiting in line for a while. That's not a dealbreaker, but with a summer of social distancing, it's nice to have a spot like Annedore's that is tucked into the neighborhoods, has outdoor seating, and is never too busy. Their gelato is so good, and the service is friendly as it gets. We've made a tradition of walking up here as a family once a week, and together we've ordered or sampled: Cookies & Cream, Birthday Cake, Mint Chip, Chocolate Chip, Coconut, Strawberry, Berry Sorbet, Vanilla, and Lemon Basil. All are great (not crazy about the birthday cake one my kiddo always gets), the Berry Sorbet and Lemon Basil are standouts on a hot day. Their portions are generous, prices are very fair, the outdoor seating is great, and it's a very clean shop. Oh, and I recently discovered that macarons are delicious, and theirs are some of the best around. They're around $2.50 a pop and well worth it. I cannot recommend this place enough for gelato, macarons, and of course chocolate if that's your thing. Want to skip lines for ice cream (well, gelato) this summer and still support local? My first thought was that these might be some of the prettiest chocolates I had ever seen--and thankfully, they taste just as good as they look! When my husband and I started planning a trip to Kansas City, I discovered that Christopher Elbow Chocolates is based here AND that they offer a Chocolate Experience where you can learn about chocolate, their process and the company. At $20 per person for about 50 minutes, it sounded like a fun addition to our day. Hands down, it was totally worth it! We went on a Thursday and happened to be the only two people booked for our experience, so it almost felt like our own private chocolate tour. We met the manager, who was incredibly friendly, and honestly everyone we interacted with was welcoming and helpful. During the experience, we got to try drinking chocolate, melted chocolate and a salted caramel chocolate treat--and every single one was incredible. The presentation itself was very thorough, with beautiful photos and examples throughout. We learned a lot about chocolate, their process and the company, and they took the time to answer all of our questions. If you love chocolate, the Chocolate Experience is absolutely worth adding to your Kansas City itinerary. You get to learn about chocolate, taste some delicious samples and then, of course, shop for chocolates afterward. We definitely didn't leave empty-handed! It's a great place to pick up something for yourself or bring home a beautiful (and delicious!) gift for family and friends.
