We're in the home-stretch of a multi-year yard and house face-lift project that started in 2018. We'd been gathering thoughts, materials, and concepts for several years into a rubric for what good could like. We finally the pulled trigger contacting a half-dozen landscapers and hardscapers to see what it would take to make it real. Many treated the project like a blockwork exercise - angular, rigid and formulaic. We were lucky to find a great hardscaper that introduced us to Classic Nursery as a recommendation (see Olympic Rockeries). Classic won thru the dating-phase by actually reading our rubric and listening to what we wanted, unlike others who tried to steer us to what they wanted to do. Alan's approach helped us figure through our staging and sequencing for the whole project - I felt he completely understood what our vision of the end goal was, and made it better. We worked on a design together through dialog, email, and calls with Alan, Devin, and team - coordinating hardscaping, softscaping, fencing, electrical trades and the city to make a plan. The projected kicked off with a pretty traumatic scrape of the majority of the yard, moving and saving plants where we could. Over the course of two months, the team completely reconstructed our under-utilized/unmaintainable/unusable yard into multiple "rooms" that flowed around the house with spaces for our dogs, patios & outdoor seating, lighting, power, shade, beautify shrubberies, and strictly no grass. :) I just want to pause for a second to personally thank Alan's foreman and lead Hugo. Hugo's experience, eye for detail, advice, and craftsmanship took that rubric, plan, and raw materials, adapted them to the nuances of the terrain and surroundings, and ultimately made it real. He and his team were perfectionists, we are indebted to them. Performing such a big do-over is difficult and stressful, but definitely worth it. Some of our favorite moments from the project were the chances to cook-out for the team and break bread together in the Shade Garden during the hot summer. When I walk out of my new front door, the change that Classic et. al. made still takes my breath away. This year we will replace the siding and roof to complete the project. So far I'm very disappointed with my experience with Classic Landscaping and Design. We paid for installation of two dry wells and landscape design and installation in both or yard. The design process with Will was good: I feel like he listened and put a lot of thought into design. Now that we've been living with the finished product for several months, I'm pretty unhappy. Several of the plants have died/are dying, I found at least 4 plants that the installation crew didn't even bury (exposed root balls laid in indentations in the ground) so I had to bury them myself. A few of the plants are now growing in ways that destroy the design due to mis-planting that I didn't catch. Communication and response to my concerns has been slow at best, non-existent at worst (e.g. radio silence for over three weeks in response to request for timeline to to address the warrantied work). Water is pooling near a drywell site, so not sure what's up there but perhaps the dry well isn't dry enough. For the price we paid for all this work (north of $20k) I expected a lot better than this. If they respond and address my concerns in reasonable ways, I will change this review, but as of this writing, I can't recommend this company, read more

I've probably driven past this beautiful nursery and garden center approximately 42,000 times on my way through Woodinville for some wine tasting (or other adventures), and finally took the time to stop here last month on my way to do some bday wine tasting. While I didn't buy anything on this trip, I was looking for some ideas to fill a couple of pots I recently purchased at an estate sale, and - wow - did they have some great inspo. I appreciated that their plants appear to all be PNW-friendly varieties, available in everything from small starter varieties to full-sized, in-ground offerings. This isn't a fancy nursery, so there wasn't a lot of that extra stuff you find at other garden centers (like clothing, books, furniture, etc), but if you're looking for some local garden inspo I highly recommend them! read more

Alan gave our project everything he wanted but very little of what we asked. The contract was imprecise, but we (fools that we are with tens of thousands of dollars) trusted the articulate, seemingly authentic salesman to follow-through and do what we'd asked, what the contract implied and expressed would be done, and what the articulate and cool conman nodded his head and spoke words to as if in approval. Mid-project, we began to ask questions and voiced concerns. That was just too much for the namby-pamby to handle, so we were treated to rude adjectives too unfair to justify any further interaction. We will pay fools to go away. We suggest future buyers beware of misplaced trust in the contracts of this company, in the word of this company's representatives, and in the quality of the work for which we paid but which was either incomplete, incompetently performed, and/or woefully inadequate. The laborers were polite and accommodating, with one nodding yes to every query (?language skill deficit) and the other learning by Google as he tried to do some job he obviously didn't know how to do while lacking supervision or timely project oversight and management. In the end, we went elsewhere to have our job done. Classic got money for what they should have done. In their dreams we are pleased. read more

The short version: Classic Nursery and Landscape did a great job renovating and enhancing our yard. I couldn't recommend them more highly. The details: We were working with a landscape design/build company which closed without warning - in the middle of our yard renovation project, having gone through all of our original budget and then some, and leaving us with a ratty-looking yard and a carport full of crushed rock. Classic cleared out our shrubbery jungle, leaving carefully pruned plants (including some I had forgotten were there). They constructed a wheelchair-accessible path around our backyard, and built a new water feature. Then they brought in beautiful new plants. They did more in 3 weeks than our previous landscape company did in 2 years. Alan was a pleasure to work with, professional and cordial. He responded promptly to every query. The project got done when he said it would be done, and it cost what he said it would cost. The landscape crew was great; knowledgeable and industrious. They accomplished an amazing amount of work in a very short time. Fred worked hard to get our water feature just right, and the results justify the effort he put into it. Our visit to Don Rosebrook at the nursery might've been the highlight of the project. I couldn't get my wheelchair into the greenhouse to see our new plants (probably just as well - I might still be there!), so he kindly brought them out where we could meet them. He even brought out several alternative possibilities for us to consider. It was well worth the trip out to Woodinville. I know our new landscape will look better every year, but this first year it will be particularly exciting to watch our new plants wake up in the spring. I can hardly wait! read more

Not impressed they would not even come out for a bid or consultation unless we committed to a 5k budget or greater for landscaping. After several emails including one that included links and suggested we look at other contractors that were better suited in our budget which was never even clarified I decided to look for help elsewhere. My original goal was to get a professional opinion on existing plants that may need to be removed and replaced, add a small retaining space for future garden and lay mulch. Most certainly we would invest and likely pay close to 5k in the current market but asking us to commit before seeing the property or meeting us to discuss the project is poor business etiquette. Highly recommend Classic! Elena (our project manager and landscape designer) was very professional. She was responsive, quickly answered our numerous questions, and put together a beautiful design. Even though we were a relatively small project (4-day project), the folks at Classic never made us feel like we were less of a priority than their bigger, more expensive projects. Our backyard turned out absolutely beautiful. They took down an existing retaining wall, which was a major eyesore, and replaced it with much more attractive material. They also built a small patio in the corner of our yard and planted a beautiful variety of plants around the patio. We love our backyard and plan to hire Classic again for future projects. read more

We hired Classic Nursery summer 2017 to transform our backyard into an Outdoor Living Space. We interviewed 3 companies, and chose this one because the owner, Alan Burke, seemed personable, knowledgeable and "on top of it". Prices were all in the same range. We talked through ideas and preferences for the structure of the yard, met at the nursery to discuss plant options and emailed a list of likes and dislikes to Mr. Burke. We were assured that these would be integrated into the project. Early on, it was apparent that the project was not well-managed. Their employees were standing around, on their phone, doing nothing for large periods of time. At one point, the Onsite Manager dug up some cement blocks that had just been installed by another contractor, setting us back days. All of that work had to be redone. Mr. Burke claimed to be the project manager but was only present a couple of times. Much of our early conversations about what we wanted seemed to be forgotten, and when we brought up details previously discussed they were frustratingly treated as new ideas. When we mentioned that we didn't feel heard, the response was defensive and made us feel even less heard. The project took much longer than projected (not unusual), and when Mr. Burke did the final "walkthrough" he acknowledged that the project "was not up to our normal standards," and he asked us to "not trash us on social media." The Proposal was very misleading, with the total clearly marked and bolded; but you had to go into the very small print to find that "applicable taxes would be added". Because of all of the issues, I offered to pay the bolded total ($40,000), so basically a 10% reduction. Mr. Burke refused that offer and threatened to put a lien on our property, even though the final payment was not yet due. So, this is the main reason I would never recommend doing business with this company: Mr. Burke PUT A LIEN ON OUR PROPERTY BEFORE THE FINAL PAYMENT WAS DUE simply because we suggested a negotiation to compensate for the mismanaged project. I have never heard of anyone doing this. He does not listen well, and is only good with customer relations until you sign the contract. Just stay away. read more

I cannot say this enough: Alan and his team were absolutely superb. We had a fairly complicated project of removing concrete, and redesigning a front patio, in addition to landscaping our entire front year area, and the curbside gardens. I am not at all artsy or good with this stuff; so with very vague guidance from me, they were able to turn the place into a wonderful garden, and patio. The stones were meticulously and expertly placed, and the final product was amazing. It's night and day from what it was before. We've received lots of compliments. Along the way they were great at communication and customer service. You're paying for quality, communication, responsiveness, and a personal touch. I highly recommend. read more

When I arrived the nursery was quite, it wasn't busy. I went to the check out and the sign says " 1 person allow at checkout a time" something a long that line. So we stayed outside near the door as the cashier, a man with gray hair . finished the helping out the customer. Then a family of three, the husband, lined up after us, as we all waited for the cashier to finish the customer to my surprise the cashier, said to the husband family of three, I will help you now. the other family members were still looking around for plants. It should have been first come first serve. I was never acknowledge I'll be with you in a few minutes or anything. I was upset, but I decide to just be patient and wait. As he rang up all the plants, the family of three wanted a couple more plants to add that took more time,And everyone including the cashier went out to look for the plants.There was no other staff to help. During this time whole time my kids stayed in the checkout house under my supervision. They looked around and waited and waited. It been more than 20 minutes by now. Finally, when it was our time to check out, my son wanted to get a hose attachment. And by now my son refuses to put it back since he been waiting too long. My son had placed the item in a different location then when he found it. The cashier said to my son, you have to put it back to where you found it or you are not buying a tree!" so i said to my son, please put the item back where you found it, im getting impatient since it been a very long wait." My son finally put it back to where he found it. i told the cashier the tree the price and he proceed to check out the tree. Then he said, "i don't want your kids running around and breaking stuff". I told him the kids will be kids and with this long of a wait they will be impatient. He is rude to our family by taking the other family first when clearly they weren't ready to check out. secondly, he was rude to my kids. I should have left when he took the other family ahead of me . He and another staff helped load the 1 tree to my car. I hope the owner is able to address this with his staffing for future customers with kids. Yesterday's experience makes me feel, my kids and I are not welcomed at this nursery. we been to many nurseries and never feel this awful. We won't be coming back. read more

I enjoyed wandering this nursery today. It is surrounded by woods and, were it not for the occasional car noise, you could almost forget that you are just yards away from a pretty major road. They had lots of informative booklets available -- on natural methods for lawn care, water conservation and the like. They were certainly not "in your face" about this, but seemed to honestly believe that chemical-free, environmentally friendly, is best and passed this information on so customers could be informed and make their own decisions about caring for their gardens -- and how to do so most easily should they choose to go the "natural" route. This is not the hugest garden center around, but they still have a nice selection of diverse and healthy-looking plants. And, of course, this is not prime gardening season. I look forward to making a return visit in the spring. read more

I just got off the phone with owner Alan Burke to discuss having them put in an irrigation system for me and it was a disappointing experience. To start off with, it was evident from the moment we started talking that Alan was busy doing other things and wasn't 100% engaged in our conversation...banging things around and holding the phone in ways that made it incredibly challenging to understand him even after I had mentioned that I was having trouble hearing due to what he was doing. I have done a reasonable amount of research and know most of what I want; that ultimately seemed to create discomfort for Alan...potentially because I had a majority of the parts cost already calculated and given that I'd know fairly well what he would be charging me for pure labor since he bids the job as a whole. Several times I tried to talk specifics with Alan and he'd steer off into generalities, whether it was talking about the backflow prevention device they'd use, or the controller and sensors that I had already chosen based on my research. It's clear to me that Classic Nursery was looking for a more "hands-off" customer that would translate into more markup/margin for them. That's totally fine and has probably served them well as a business given that there are so many customers that don't know a whole lot about what they want/need in an irrigation system. If you don't want to be bothered with the details of an irrigation system and are fine paying more for someone else to take care of it then consider Classic Nursery, given their other reviews it sounds like they'll do a good job. If you want to save a few thousand dollars do your homework and find someone else who will work better with you. read more

The work was done on time, and I didn't encounter any of the "pitfalls" that friends had warned me about when working with other landscapers. Alan was able to adjust his suggestions to suit my preferences, and made a lot of really useful comments ... and was easy to get hold of if I had questions. This is a review of the nursery, not the landscaping services, which I haven't used. Classic Nursery is all about plants. You won't find an expensive gift shop with garden themed tablecloths and such. Unlike other large nurseries, all of their staff on site are knowledgeable about plants, and can tell me if the plant will do well where I want to put it. They are happy to pull the root ball out of its container so you can check its root health. They have a good selection of native and easy care plants that are disease resistant. Classic is smaller than some of the other nearby nurseries, but I've always been able to find what I wanted-- or a better alternative-- and their plants are very hardy. read more

Update: May 24th and still have not heard from Mr. R. Now we're almost a month since the initial meeting for an estimate. I give 5 star for the owner Alan, but I give 2 star for the person in charge at the nursery. So I give an average of 3 stars. Alan (the owner) was very proactive, educated me on best plants for hedges and was very helpful via email. Because my project was small, he said the nursery could do the installation. April 29th, we talked the nursery manager to find 40 plants of 1-gallon (they only had 3 gallons). He said they were very busy and booked but said he would check for 1 gallons and give me an estimate within 5 to seven days. We're May 18th and still not estimate. I contacted him again last week. May 11th he said he was "still looking to find 1 gallon plants". Meanwhile, I called another nursery Monday and they had the 40 plants of 1-gallon. We bought them and they will deliver them. We will have better luck installing them ourselves. It's very unfortunate that The nursery manager was not more forthcoming with us. Barely no communication. Classic Nursery just wrapped up a 3+ week landscape renovation project for my Issaquah home. I was in communication with Alan, the landscape designer, starting in 2017 and finally decided to move forward with this extensive project. Alan is patient, knowledgeable, responsive and full of experience that he brings to his projects. With very few revisions, I went with the landscape design which included a new flagstone patio for a fire pit, dry-streambed treatments around the property, 14 light installations and a water fountain feature at the entryway. Hugo was the foreman for the job and was on-time, knowledgeable, great with communication and made changes quickly as he and I translated the landscape design sketch into reality. At the nursery Don was patient, knowledgeable and listened well to understand what plantings I wanted and would do well around my home. I purchased 20+ different shrubs and plants and Don was friendly in showing me around the nursery and indicating what I might like. I can't say enough positive things about Classic Nursery. I will definitely be referring others to them and giving them more business as I continue to invest in my outdoor spaces. read more

This is the 3rd time I've used Classic Nursery & Landscaping. The first was for the backyard of my West Bellevue town home where they totally revamped and changed from a little used, dreary looking place to a stylish, inviting place of beauty, to include a lovely fire pit and Japanese Zen garden. The second time I used them was when we re-landscaped some of the front area of our HOA. They did a lovely job in upgrading the areas along the front. Now I've moved and need to re-do my new backyard. It's the most ambitious project of all and I'm grateful to the "vision" Alan and his team have in helping me with paver area, water feature and an even lovelier Japanese Zen-like garden. Project was plagued with blatant omissions, oversights, short-cuts and intentional cover-ups. Alan Burke is an acrimonious, narcissistic and arrogant owner that attempts to fool the client with a superficial "customer service" front. The constant and continuous buffoonery of Alan Burke and his crew, albeit extremely frustrating, was reminiscent of watching a three-ring circus. I got several bids for a 1400sq foot project and selected Classic Nursery, not because they were there cheapest but because of the reviews is read about them and the very organized approach. I had to wait two months from the time I signed and provided a deposit to the start date. It was worth the wait. They've exceeded my expectations. My yard looks phenomenal. I had a two hour appointment at the nursery with the Master Gardener to select my plants and ask a plethora of questions. Truly awesome! read more

We contacted them about helping us improve the landscaping on our new home and they responded quickly to our request for a consultation. Update - I hope prospective clients will take the time to read both my review and Alan's response. I recommend thinking hard about who's the bigger jerk - the client who writes a review about a bad experience, or the business owner who writes an even longer response providing every minute detail from his perspective and painting the client as an out-of-control wife and her put-upon husband. Possibly a more appropriate response would be along the lines of "we're sorry you had a bad experience...". To respond to several points that Alan brings up: - We signed a contract with Alan not because we thought his first drawing accurately reflected what we wanted - it didn't - but because he assured us that we could easily make changes as we went along. He simply wasn't able, or willing, to reflect the changes we wanted. We politely asked for even a partial refund. He refused. It was an all-around terrible experience. I'm not sure how he expects to get a positive review out of that scenario. - Regarding Alan's claim that we wanted everything for free, that's simply false. We paid $500 and we wanted $500 worth of value - what we got was 2 short site visits and 2 essentially useless drawings. Given that we'd therefore paid $500 for nothing of use to us and given the lack of progress did not intend to move forward with him, we asked for a refund, and made it clear on the phone that out of respect for the time he spent a partial refund was fine. He would not refund us a dime. What Alan's really saying here is not that we wanted things for free, but that he values his time at between $125-250 per hour. Think about that. - "We got into a somewhat heated discussion and disagreement with each other"...ridiculous. First of all, we were not on the same page for roughly 30-60 seconds (does that never happen at other consultations??), second of all it was not "heated", it's called a conversation, and third of all your idea of "mollifying" us was to tell a questionably appropriate anecdote about how your wife isn't allowed to contribute to any landscaping decisions at your house. Sorry if you can't handle it being 2016 and couples openly sharing opinions with each other. - "The client was too upset to continue and frankly, she was somewhat belligerent with me (and her husband) even at our meeting." How incredibly misogynistic. Really, I hope all of your prospective female clients read this and think twice about working with you - if they write you less than a glowing review they'll be painted as some sort of angry shrew who is difficult to live with let alone work with. And frankly, you were belligerent on the phone - you may want to think about a better strategy for handling annoyed clients than "escalate further". You've clearly put in about 10x more work on this response intended to discredit us than you did on trying to work with us. I hope that rather than pretending that your business and conduct are perfect, you actually spend a couple minutes critically thinking about our feedback, how you could have worked with us better, and how you can improve your business accordingly in the future. Classic Nursery was awesome transforming our backyard of weeds, overgrown shrubs and aging wood retaining wall into a beautifully sculpted landscape. Our project consisted of expanding the useable space by replacing an old two-tiered rock planting area with one wall of beautiful new rock that extended around the yard replacing an old retaining wall. With new plants and flagstone walkway the yard was ready for a putting green to be provided by Synthetic Turf NW. The end result is magnificent, providing an idyllic oasis for fun and relaxation. Classic Nursery (Elena) was key to the success of the project by providing overall project management and ensuring completion of activities on schedule. She was a pleasure to work with and easily adapted to my multiple requests throughout the project. The crews performing the work were all professional and easy to work with. Both foremen (Hugo and Brandon) ensured quality work and were responsive to my inputs along the way. Classic Nursery & Landscape Co exceeded our expectations! We hired them for our backyard, it was just a sloped dirt hill and we wanted it leveled & have half lawn/half pavement put in for our toddler son to play. We didn't think it was possible but OMG, they did such a fabulous job. It looks gorgeous!!! The crew, led by Hugo were Eric, Omar, Jose & Carlos and they worked so hard each day. They even cleaned up after themselves each day including the street, our neighbors took notice. Alan, the owner was so professional, flexible & accommodating and was really good to work with, very personable and nice. He had great ideas and gave suggestions and opinions where needed. We had our walk-thru yesterday and he jotted down a few minor things that they'd take care of. He even bought a bag of gifts like hose, garden book, etc. and marked down the pages of the plantings that we have to well maintain them. Who does that? We were in search of someone who could transform our backyard into a beautiful and functional outdoor space. We normally consider ourselves "do-it-yourself" people who cruise the Big Box Store garden aisles on weekends in search of materials and ideas. But after fiddling around with the yard for years with marginal results, we decided to seek the professional expertise of a landscape architect and Classic Nursery. Alan, Sam, Brian, Don and team did an amazing job renovating our backyard. We valued their ability to translate ideas into a formal plan. These folks are walking encyclopedias of plant knowledge and what really works in the Pacific Northwest. Classic's experience with creative patios, walkways, ponds, etc. is stellar. Our yard had many existing resources--from an old patio to mature trees and shrubs to an old water feature. Classic was able to keep what worked, transplant some things to better areas and start fresh where needed. Their patio and pond work were beautiful! Classic Nursery did a complete renovation of the front entrance to our neighborhood. We worked specifically with Wan-Chi and she was SUPER! She offered design expertise/options, met with us at the nursery to finalize selection of shrubs/plants, supervised the on-site installation work and then followed up several times to make sure we were watering correctly and to see if there were any issues. After many years as satisfied customers of Classic's nursery operation, we decided to try the landscape side of the business. We couldn't be more pleased. Recently retired and avid gardners, we wanted a larger patio area to better enjoy our plantings and entertain friends. We have a contemporary home on a one acre lot in a wooded setting, and wanted something that would complement our surroundings. At our initial meeting with owner Alan Burke (a landscape architect) he quickly grasped the potential for our site. Working within our projected budget he built on our "general idea" to a more detailed design that included features we hadn't considered. The final plan included a beautiful patio using earth-toned pavers in unique patterns, a small bordering wall of "dry-stacked" slate rock, a large wooden arbor over the seating area, a waterfall feature, plantings from their nursery and lighting. Topping it off was a flagstone path meandering to a garden area. The entire project went very smoothly. Classic's workers were like craftsmen, paying great attention to detail. Reflecting Alan's hands-on professional approach, glitches were resolved promptly, and creative agreed-upon special touches added or substituted as we went along - all within budget and on schedule. As we continue to enjoy our new outdoor area we get the occasional "who did you use" question. We're not at all hesitant to highly recommend the people at Classic. Unfortunately the work they did for us was not of great quality. We had small, raised garden beds constructed and many of the rocks that they placed have become loose. The gravel they put down was not deep enough, and the weed cloth used was not of sturdy enough weight to resist the weeds and now we have a ton of weeds. We did call them out during their guarantee period and they did come out and fix what they needed to (hence the three stars). But unfortunately it has been only a couple of years since the install and I have to say that I am not completely happy with the results. read more
