Perhaps it is time for a new place Don't get me wrong but my last visit was much to be desired. First, the positive . The front desk is efficient and the eye tech very proficient. The doctor I saw was new as my other one has left. She was great. The optical department is the best. They can really help you find frames that fit your face nicely. However, it is simply unacceptable to be at the office for 6 hours for an eye exam and picking out lens and contacts. I understand things happen and was ok. However, I called today as the contacts they gave me just don't work. Granted it has been sever months since my visit but after having to wait 6 hours I wasn't too excited to go back. The doctor told me to come back if the contacts were not working for me. I was never able to keep them in longer than an hour as they made my vision blurry. Like Vaseline in your eye blurry so I just wore my glasses. Today when I tried to make an appointment to get them adjusted I was told the first available appointment wasn't until October! That is 5 months from now. I was told I would need another eye exam as it was over 90 days, which no one told me about. I find it ironic that the appointment available is one month after my insurance approval for another exam. Another experience was my daughter had to get eye surgery for a benign cyst that was starting to impair her field of vision. It would be 1 months before we could get her on for the first exam. That was unacceptable so we went up to Tacoma. We actually had the same eye doctor who was going to do it at Clarus. We got her scheduled within 2 weeks. Ok read more

One star only because there's nothing lower. I apologize for the length but it is necessary to give you the complete picture. The facility looks good and that's where it ends. I went in for retinopathy and refraction for new glasses. Because I've had numerous exams prior, I have become extremely familiar with the steps involved. First, the refraction was done by a technicia/doctor's assistant. It was done haphazardly, did the left eye, did the right eye, neither of which was good per my eyes. She never did both at the same time. I mentioned that this should be done because neither left nor right eye was giving me clear vision. She insisted it was good. I had my new glasses made at an outside facility. Sure enough, I could not see through them. I called them back, I got shuffled between reservations and the optical center several times until I got somebody who cared enough to listen to what the issue was. I was directed to the optical center where they blamed the place where I had my glasses made, then they blamed me for selecting bigger frames, then changing the type of lenses, etc. till they ran out of things to blame me for. then instead of starting from scratch and sitting me back down on the chair, they tried to fix the issue by working from the faulty prescription they gave me in the first place. I expressed my concern for this make-do procedure as I felt they were still not fixing the issue. then I had to wait for the new prescription, told that it would be emailed to me. several days later, I had to call to get it. i then had the glasses remade per the new prescription. you guessed it, I could not see through those new lenses either. I went back again, was told I had to wait an extra 5 weeks for another appointment. I told them it was not acceptable, waited 30 minutes for somebody who supposedly had the ability to override schedule. I then got an appointment where I only had to wait 2 weeks. As this is long enough, I will not get into the rudeness and seemingly lack of training by their employees who don't seem to know their protocols and procedures. Given the comedy of errors I'd experienced with these guys I chose to go to another doctor at another facility instead. I am happy to report that after ONE visit with the new doctor, I can see through my glasses using the exact same frame, the exact same type of lenses, and the exact same pair of eyes that Clarus was using as excuses why they could not fix the issue. If it is still not clear, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE, GO SOMEPLACE ELSE. read more

The Ophthalmologists whom I have seen at Clarus have been outstanding! I have had a serious eye issue that required two surgeries. A day or two after one of the surgeries my eye became progressively more painful. I called Clarus & spoke with the Dr. who performed the surgery. She told me to come right into the office. I did; she fixed the problem and had me come back in the next day to check it again. Dr. Peck was extremely responsive, efficient and pleasant. Oh, did I mention that was about 10 pm on a Saturday night and the next morning about 10 am, Sunday!!! I also see another Dr. on a regular basis (Scholes). He is the most professional doctor and very thorough. The staff has always been very helpful and accommodating. I have been amazed at the communication system that they all use to keep the office flowing/working. I think they're one of the BEST! read more

My son was in a car accident over Memorial Day weekend and had major damage to his eye. He was treated at Harborview that weekend and told to follow up with our own eye doctor on Tuesday. Well he had never had any vision problems prior to this so we didn't have an eye doctor. I called Clarus that Tuesday and explained the situation. The office was able to get him in that day to see a doctor. The care my son has received has been incredible. His eye has required many many visits to Clarus to see many doctors. All of the doctors that he has seen have been kind, caring, and knowledgeable. They foster an office community here where the doctors consult each other and work as a team. It's not unusual for him to see more than one doctor on a visit. The supporting staff from the front door to the back are helpful and kind. I highly recommend Clarus. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! I went in three times and never received a working prescription. I went in early and they called me in way past my appointment time, then rushed my appointment and gave me an unusable prescription. I spent hundreds of dollars on glasses, only to not be able to use them. Called Clarus to get this fixed and they said I had to pay them money before they would schedule an appointment to fix this. I only had 14 days to return my glasses with a working prescription. Had to call my insurance company, and my primary care doctor to get a special authorization and go somewhere else! I want to like this place, I really do. I know a lot of people love it -- most of my family included -- but I can't help but feel like I'm missing something. I've been a patient here for years and have seen three different Clarus doctors (Dr. Rudd, Dr. Mueller, and Dr. Waggoner). The quality of the doctors is excellent, and for some people, that might be enough to offset the poor customer service from the office staff. Dr. Rudd especially is an expert in the field (I have friends from north of Seattle that drive all the way to Lacey to see him for certain conditions). And Dr. Waggoner, whom I see most often, is great (not to mention oh-so-adorable). The facility is brand new and state-of-the-art, and ooh, they have a fish tank! Unfortunately, the rest of the experience... um, sucks. Check-in seems to take forever, and is hindered by the fact that several of the check-in attendants also man the phones. It's a bit disconcerting to walk in and see a whole row of people seemingly sitting there looking available, and yet have to stand around and wait for several minutes until the little red "I'm on the phone" button at their station goes out and they call you over. I totally get it, I just think it makes the check-in experience rather uncomfortable for the patient. Why can't you have the people answering the phones in a different area of the office, and have the check-in staff dedicated to managing the (rather long) line of people trying to check in for appointments? Just sayin', My biggest gripe is the wait time. I understand that doctor's offices often frequently run behind schedule, but it seems to happen here EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. And I'm not talking about just a few minutes here and there. My appointment last week was on a Tuesday morning at 9:30. I arrived at 9:10 (I was asked to arrive early as they were transitioning to a new online record-keeping system and needed to reconfirm all my information). By the time I waited in line and got checked in, it was 9:25. I wasn't called back by a nurse until 10:10. Seriously? You're running 40 minutes late that early in the morning? Again, I know that this kind of thing happens in the medical field, but a heads-up upon check-in would have been nice so that I could plan for the delay. It went [further] downhill from there. The technician had trouble with the machine that takes creepy close-up pictures of your eyeballs... I don't know if she didn't know how to use it, or it wasn't working right, or what -- but it didn't make me feel overly confident in the care I was receiving, that's for sure. When I finally saw Dr. Waggoner he was very nice, as always, but the visit was brief. When he was done, the technician gave me the prescription for my contacts and a sheet of paper for billing that I was told to hand in at the desk, and then just... vanished. No "goodbye," no "have a nice day," not even a "you're done, get the hell out." Um... okay? Took my billing sheet to the front desk as instructed (oh look, there's the long line of attendant stations where no one is available to help you again!), and apparently the tech had filled out the billing sheet wrong. By this time, it was 11:05 and I was late for a meeting, so I asked them to just figure it out and bill me by mail. Oh, and don't even get me started on the contact lens center. Seriously, it's a lost cause. Overall, I think the intentions here are good -- like I said, the doctors are extremely competent and professional, and I think the business has just gotten too big too fast. However, as a patient, that translates to slow, inconsistent, impersonal and ultimately disappointing service. read more

A FU*KING INTERMINABLE WAIT! and I mean just to be checked! Not for an exam; not for any procedures, but this is the third time I've either gone for myself or accompanied someone who had an appointment, only to wait an average of TWO HOURS! It was two hours the first time, 1-1.5 hours the second time, and I just left after 2 hours and 15 minutes for a simple eye check. Come on! Their eyeglasses section is a different business under the Claurus name in the building. So, after driving 40 miles one way to do this, I now have to get my glasses somewhere else. Unfortunately, like most doctor offices, their ambitious patient scheduling appears to result in an inevitable 15+ minute wait. If you want faster & more efficient (for the patient, not the doctor), then go to Costco Optical. Otherwise, Clarus also has the advantage that they accept your eye insurance (you pay co-pay only, MC/Visa accepted), whereas Costco does not (cash only). After years of struggling with perfecting a perception for glasses and contacts, I gave up. Dr. Rudd was recommended for Laysik. My first impression of Clarus was immaculate. Sharp building on the outside and perfection on the inside. Every receptionist there is friendly in person and on the phone. I first met with Craig for a consultation. Immediately, I knew I was in good hands. With his thorough knowledge and witty humor, I decided to move forward with my decision to get Laysik. During my first appointment with Dr. Rudd , I was in disbelief. He was full of information and answering all my questions and concerns without hesitation. My experiences at Clarus were getting better and better each time. The care I received before and after the day of my Laysik procedure was to the T. I sat up on the operating table and could immediately read the clock across the room, I have not been able to do that since middle school. I wish I knew about Dr. Rudd and his team at Clarus during my years of struggling to find accuracy in eye prescriptions and such. Dr. Rudd and his team at Clarus will always be my recommendation. The nicest person was the receptionist, otherwise I felt like a number. I was referred here by both a friend and my boss. I arrived on the wrong day for an issue with my right eye, and the receptionist found me a spot, so I was able to return an hour later. Kudos to her. Both the people in the blue scrubs addressed me by my last name which I do not go by. When I asked the second person who brought me into the Docotors room if he was the Doctor he said no, and when i asked if it might be 10 or 20 minutes until the Doctor came in all he said was 'you are next' and shut the door and left. Neither of them nor the Doctor introduced themselves. I confirmed the Doctor was the Doctor by asking him, he also had on a white coat. I still do not know his name, I guess the patient is the one to ask. The person who brought me into the Doctors room seemed like he was only there to push buttons on the computer because the Doctor obviously does not do things like that. I am not sure I will schedule an eye exam there after all. read more

I had a great experience at Clarus! My son has high functioning autism and strabismus. He is a busy little guy and sitting still for long is not really in the works for him. All I can say is thank goodness for that nook they have for the kids to play in! I was able to corral my son and keep him entertained with books and toys. Even the fish provided a few minutes of entertainment for my quick moving tyke! The check-in was a bit weird initially, but after the first time, we knew what we were doing and where to go. The greeter was so sweet! She's the one who pointed us to the kids' nook. I felt the whole check-in experience was quick and efficient. They were all smiling and understanding when I actually had to run off to catch my kid. Ha. The staff was amazing! The gals that took all our information in the exam room before seeing the doctor at each of our appointments were great with him! They came up with fun ways to get the different assessments from him and allowed me to step in when needed to steer him when they couldn't. He definitely was a fan of all the pretty girls that worked there, whether at the front desk or the back! Ha. Kim in the optical was amazing, too! She was able to distract my son in entertaining ways to get his glasses adjusted and helped me figure out what would look good on him. All with NO MELTDOWNS! Amazing. I can honestly say going through the stress of learning that your autistic son is cross-eyed and having to deal with getting his first pair of glasses was made easier at Clarus. They not only helped my son, they helped me. It was a little scary and overwhelming, but they talked me through it and never ONCE made me feel like they had to rush out. Maybe that's why others have complained of a wait - the gals at the back and the doctors spend quality time with their patients? I don't know. All I know is that they took the time with me and my son, and really helped us through a scary time. read more

Clarus Optical really redeemed themselves. The Manager took the time to contact me (both by telephone and email) and offered to make it right. When I arrived in person to pick up my glasses, she explained that they are required to use a lab that my insurance provider requires (not their normal lab). If I'd known that up front, I wouldn't have written the original review. Instead I would have contacted my insurance provider to let them know their lab has consistent QA failures that need to be addressed. While Clarus offered to provide a free pair of sunglasses, I asked that they simply extend that offer to someone in need. I didn't write the review to get something for free. Just wanted to get attention on a customer satisfaction issue that didn't seem to be resolving itself thru normal communication channels. read more

I honestly don't know what all the complaints are about. It does look like a big bank when you first walk in (definitely not a deal breaker). We were new patients but most of the process was taken care of over the phone. We were greeted immediately and checked in. My son's appointment was flawless. They did move us to two different rooms and we waited in two different areas, but that wasn't a big deal. Dr. Scholes was very thorough (my son has had some eye issues) and friendly. We had to come back on a different day for myself and my daughter because they won't make more than 2 consecutive family member appointments at a time. That was almost a deal breaker. But I understand why. If you have 3+ appointments then the whole family has to cancel then your schedule gets messed up. I did end up having to cancel those two appointment last minute do to a scheduling conflict. My daughter and I returned the following week and although the waiting room was packed, we were seen in a very timely manner. We were seen by Dr. Muehler. She was also very thorough and she got us in and out of there quickly. I really liked how thorough the eye exams were for my children. At previous eye appointments (at other eye clinics) they are in and out and I am surprised if they saw anything. They have never dilated their eyes before which makes me wonder what those other clinics were even doing. Overall this is one of the best eye clinics we've visited. If you are looking for a tiny office with just a couple of doctors then this isn't the place for you. If you would like an eye centre where eye care is multifaceted then you've found the place. read more

I have been a patient of Clarus for over 10 years, their doctors are top-notch professionals I trust and know I am receiving the best care. Their clinical staff are very polite and efficient. They would have a 5 star if they hired a new business manager that understands customer service associated with payments. Every visit I am reminded over and over again about payment to the point I just want to raise my voice and say I WILL PAY MY BILL - STOP! When you schedule your visit they remind you twice to bring your insurance card (do you not always bring this to medical appointments?), then when you get the reminder, they say it again. When you arrive the receptionist takes a new copy (even if it hasn't changed) of your card and reminds you of payment due following your visit for additional charges; again, I promise to pay you don't need to make it the focus of the check in process. I wear contacts, they conduct a fitting exam every year although state law says every two - my guess is to collect an additional $65. Fine by me, I want the best care -- no cutting corners. The over the top in your face reminder is when you are in with the clinical staff they make you sign a piece of paper before the exam reminding you again you have to pay today. Wow! I have a suggestion, flag your problem patients that don't pay instead of making every person go through this negative experience. When you leave you are not thinking of the exceptional care, but how they must be struggling financially. read more

I have been attending Clarus eye center for over 20 years. In addition, I brought my mom there for many years as well. Dr. Rudd is excellent extremely good with his cataract surgeries and his bedside manner especially with older people very kind and respectful. Similarly Dr. Wagner is very good as well. He is very respectful, kind, & good at his job. The entire staff is very good as well. You usually have to wait a while beyond your appointment so prepare for that but that's because they don't rush you and they do a good job with each patient. I would highly recommend anybody there as the best in this whole county area. read more

I had an 8am appointment, checked in early, was the third person in the waiting room and everyone that came in after me was called back. after 15 minutes I went up to inquire, the greeter went and checked and after a few minutes she said I was next in the queue. 15 minutes later after more patients came in and were called back I checked again and she did the same thing and said I was next in the queue. 5 minutes more I cancelled my appointment and will not be going back. When I scheduled it I let her know I had another appointment at 9:30 and she said it wouldn't take an hour, found out it would have taken and hour and a half. After making a appointment,which I was refered by my regular eye doctor,I looked up some reviews on line,went all the way back to 2018 seems they had the same issues then as in 2022. I received 3 reminders to come 15 min. early, so I made sure I was there 20 min. early, sat in the waiting room for almost 50 min. finally was called in did a exam and the young man had no people skills at all ! then was led into another waiting room filled with 10 to 12 others waiting to see the doctor, waited another 28 min. finally meet with DR Rudd (great guy ) he did his exam and told the assistant to get a prescription called in for some eye drops he wanted me to use for two weeks, I gave the assistant pharmacy name and address, went there next day no prescription called Clarus closed on friday checked fri,sat,sun,monday morning , called Clarus twice monday morning and was hung up on both times , got in my car and went over there and asked to speak with a superviser, told her the problem, she never said were sorry nothing ! and asked what I wanted to do, I said I had never been treated so disrespectful by a medical provider in my 72 years, and canceled my future RLE surgery, I am also a professional and time is money. It looks like their business manager has a standard response he uses, 53 years in business for Clarus and the BBB has not accredited them, this should tell you something ! read more

I have worn glasses/contacts for 45 years. In that time I can honestly say this is the first time I've had such an awful experience. I had lost a contact, so I called Clarus. I was overdue for a eye exam. When I arrived on the scheduled date, I was greeted by the "greeter". She was dressed in a smock, and asked it I was there for an appointment. It was awkward to be escorted. just steps to the roped off walkway. The setting reminded me more of a bank than an eye office. I was first sent to a small room, the gal took a quick eye test. She spoke into a walkie talkie to see what rooms were vacant. I was then moved to another room, where a different lady took a eye exam. She took me to another room, where she used eye equipment. She walked me to into a waiting room, where I couldn't see a thing. I was there alone, until a 3rd lady came to get me. I followed her into another room. Finally, the actuall doctor, Dr Mueller. She did not introduce herself. She was not personable. She did a few tests and then excused herself. I was then escorted out of the office. Two weeks later, I received a call that my contacts were in. I made an appointment and once again I was escorted to a room where the helper did a quick exam. I could not see even the BIG E. The new contacts were worse than the old prescription I was wearing. After I received another call, that the contacts were in, I once again went into Clarus to pick up my contacts. I was escorted into a small room where I was given a quick eye exam. I could see out of my right eye, but still not as well as an old prescription, once again the left eye was blurry. I was sent home with the right eye contact, telling me that because it was a specialized contact my eye would have to adjust. After 3 days of wearing that contact and not being able to read text on my phone or do my job I took it out. I'm now wearing an old prescription waiting until I can once again use my insurance to cover an eye exam & contacts. read more

Visited the Lacey, WA, Clarus office in late Sept., 2015 to order new glasses following a cataract surgery. Was met with high pressure sales tactics similar to buying a used car. Clarus employee used erroneous insurance information demanding a co-pay when NONE is required on a first pair of cataract lenses. Then I went to a local competitor who was professional, empathetic and knew the correct Medicare and insurance reimbursement and payment policies. Future customers of Clarus need to be sure of your benefits and be firm in knowing which glasses features you truly need before you shop here. read more

To be clear this review is for contact lenses services only. The ophthalmology or MD services are excellent and I would recommend them without reservation. The initial Optometrist I saw seemed unsure of what needed to be done. I had already had a medical exam done but she came up with new issues I had never heard of before and I've worn lenses for 55 years! First lens was a terrible fit and at the end of the day I was unable to get the lens out which necessitated an Urgent Care visit. I decided to not buy the lens and waited a couple of months. When I was ready to tackle the issue again I requested a different OD. The day before the appointment they called to let me know that provider was suddenly gone. Another wait while I saw the third provider who seemed capable and knowledgeable. It took more than 6 months but the lenses fit well and I can see again. Today I got the third bill for one pair of lenses. The bill? More than $500.00! I'll be looking for another place to get contact lenses when I'm in need again. read more

I get my eye exams here and have bought several pairs of glasses here over the years. The last pair that I bought started sliding down my schnoz, so I took them in a couple of months ago to get them adjusted. Within a day or two, I realized pretty quickly that the problem had not been fixed, so I took them back and ended up getting the same person who then took them in the back to adjust them. She brought them back about ten minutes later and told me that she had accidentally broken the frames. She told me that they had another set of frames that would fit my lenses, and that I could use them until they could get my original (broken) frames replaced. I was okay with that. A month later and my replacement frames arrived. However, I'd become attached to the new frames (they were a different style), so when I went in I asked what I would need to do to keep the new frames, the person "helping" me asked where the old frames were, and I told her that they had broken them and they never gave them back to me. She responded that it would be very "complicated" to keep the other (temporary) frames since my old glasses had been replaced under the warranty. I clarified to her that they broke the frames, not me -- so they shouldn't have been replaced under the warranty. Long story short, I just kept the replacement (my old style) frames. I was willing to pay up for the new ones, but now I'll buy them somewhere else. Maybe I'll try one of those online places and save a couple of hundred bucks. read more

Dr. Reck and his team and the entire staff at Clarus showed proof they did not exist. I went to Olympia Eye Center and Olympia Vision Center. They tested me, misdiagnosed, then wanted to perform operations on my eyes! I went to Clarus and Dr. Reck showed PROOF positive I didn't have either of the conditions. My treatment at Clarus for an eye infection was excellent. The wait time, courtesy of staff, and all those ancillary and support functions were completely satisfactory. And the office went out of its way to get me in on short notice. The really important issue however is the competence and interpersonal skills of the professional providing the service. Dr Aaker excelled on all counts. I would go back just for the pleasure of interacting with him. He "knows his stuff," explains issues clearly in layman terms, displays a depth of knowledge, answers questions clearly, and has a positive sense of humor. I personally enjoy interacting with a competent professional with a sharp mind, and excellent interpersonal skills, and Dr Aaker has those qualities.
