I've been going to Clarus since I moved to Olympia12 years ago. The care was decent at first (I had…read morea history of a retina condition, so they would schedule me with an ophthalmologist for my routine exams) but in recent years I noticed they make no attempt whatsoever at continuity of care, they just schedule you with a random provider. Two visits ago, they had the radio playing in the waiting room. Reception was terrible, mostly static, and I asked the receptionist to turn it off or re-tune it. She told me she "wasn't allowed" to touch the radio. So I mentioned it to the tech when she called me back. She looked at me like I was nuts, offering helpfully, "I just tune that out". Last visit, the optometrist was using a scribe, and she dictated a term to him that was unfamiliar to me. I interrupted her to ask her what it meant, and she acted annoyed and told me to " save (my) questions for later". Of course, later never came. Last week, I called and was offered an appointment over 2 months out. The only time available was 7:45 am. I appreciate they are open extended hours to accommodate more patients, but I decided to get a referral from McKenzie at Capital Eye (by the Fred Meyer in Lacey). She recommended an optometrist only group in Tumwater. I saw them this morning and the experience was 180 degrees--nice office, up to date equipment, good bedside manner etc. The only reason I give Clarus 2 stars is they do have ophthalmologists. So if you do need cataract or retina surgery or something like that, it might be a place to consider. And oh yeah, they do have nice frames and the gal who helped me pick out my last pair listened carefully to what I wanted and helped me pick out a better pair than I would have chosen for myself.

Following my surgery - AFTER - I was asked to sign a form saying that I understood what the costs "would" be! Screwy. No one apologized for their mistake. Supppose I couldn't cover the increase? Could easily happen to another senior - wait months for an appointment, only to have to cancel. And you're not allowed to drive yourself there, so you'd also have to call your friend or family member to bring you back home, all for nothing.

I wish there were a way to rate a place based on whether they keep their religious beliefs to…read morethemselves and don't proselytize. Medically, I don't have any complaints. I went to the Olympia office to have cataract surgery and it was a little like entering a factory, but I expected that with how healthcare is right now. The folks were kind and I felt like the docs were good. It seems like the surgery will be a success for me. If it were not for the proselytizing, I would give them 5 stars. I understood a little of this when I was asked if I wanted a prayer to be said by the surgeon before the surgery. Um, what? Well, I have nothing against prayer, but this seemed inappropriate to me since I worried what would happen if I said no. Would they then have an unconscious bias against me? Would they consider me one of the great UNCHURCHED? Who knows? Prayers can be completely silent, so if the surgeon wants to pray, go for broke, but don't ask me if I want to participate when I don't know you. I checked 'yes' because I technically have nothing against prayer of any kind so, I felt like it couldn't hurt. But honestly, it was because getting eye surgery made me feel super vulnerable and I didn't want to say no. But I was totally taken aback by being sent home after my first eye was finished, with a little swag tote filled with a book, a bookmark, and a card stating "The Coming Deception" on the front, and "Find out before it comes" along with a QR code on the back so I can go to a website and get scared for my immortal soul, I guess. In my book, this kind of proselytizing falls under the category of abuse. People undergoing medical procedures are in a vulnerable place. The people taking care of them are in positions of power. That intersection should be free of religious proselytizing. I don't know if this religious swag made the cost of my procedure go up, since printing books isn't free, but it certainly will make the landfill more full. Oh, and also they ask if you have a medical directive. They won't go by it, even if you do. So know that if you have a heart attack in the chair and you have a "DO Not Resuscitate" in your file, they absolutely will not honor it. They let people know that when they sign for surgery. Not before.

But go ahead, ask your question." As if I was offending him by having concerns. As if by asking questions I was somehow challenging his expertise, rather than acknowledging it. As if this wasn't exactly the right time and place to ask questions. A bit shocked by his dismissive comment, i initially thought I should simply leave and find a different doctor. Then I thought about the weeks I had to wait just to get this appointment, and starting that process all over again, and I swallowed my pride and simply responded, "No, never-mind." But I also knew then that I would eventually write a review in which I told prospective patients this story, in case anyone preferred not to be disregarded in this way. To be fair, I am pleased with the results of my surgery. I had researched Dr Patel and never doubted his skills. But I was offended by his manner at that initial consult and believe that patients deserve to be treated better.

My appointment was to pick out frames as I had received a prescription earlier this year from a different eye care company. I have NEVER had an experience like this. Deliah sat me down, asked what I liked -shape, colors, etc - asked if I had any photos and started getting to work. She chose frames that would compliment my bone structure, colors that compliment my eye color, skin color and hair color. The first pair she brought out I thought "oh these are the ONES" then she brought out another and another and I loved every single one of them! I ended up buying two pairs. One for the spring/summer and one for the fall/winter. I regret nothing! I had been going to an eye care place in tacoma for the past 19 years and never had an experience like this. I only remember ever picking out 2 frames in the entire 19 years of going there that I loved. Every other time I was just picking the "best" out of what they had. That's why I ultimately started shopping around elsewhere bc I wanted to LOVE my glasses, not just settle for a pair and count down the days until I could get a new pair. He was very personable and made me feel like I was an actual person not just a number. They offered a sedative but I declined and we then went to the surgery area. While I waited my turn, I relaxed in a massage chair which was a very nice touch. Once in the OR, the procedure took maybe 10 minutes and they talked me through the entire process. They asked me questions about myself which helped take my mind off of everything going on. After a quick recheck to make sure everything went well, I was on my way with my instructions, new night goggles and a bag of coffee. It was also a great comfort that, during the entire process, my eyes were checked several times by different doctors to make sure everything was correct. When I told him those notes were from 21/2 yrs ago, and my current condition had improved since then, he argued with me stating that the notes were from July this year (2023). It was as though he was 'illness-shaming' me in front of his assistant. His tone & manner was without empathy & utterly unprofessional.
