I really, really wanted to love Claro. I love Mexican food and although there are a lot of Mexican options in the area, there aren't many great ones. I've read good things about this place and was hopeful this could become a regular spot for us to go with friends. Unfortunately, it was disappointing experience.
The menu looked good and the waiter made sure to tell us that the dishes are served family style. That was music to my ears. We ordered 4 dishes to start and planned to add to the order if we were still hungry or were blown away. We also ordered a couple of cocktails. I was a bit taken aback when the first dish came out within two minutes of placing the order. In fact, our first 3 dishes came out within 10-12 minutes, and before the cocktails. We got the Yellow Fin Tuna Ceviche Tostada, the Lobster Tostada and the Shrimp Aquachile. All the dishes were good, though not exceptional. And the cocktails were very enjoyable. And then the main dish came out, Mole Rojo, beef cheek in mole sauce. And this is where our experience took a turn. The mole sauce itself was really nice, but the beef was unfortunately inedible, as it was at least 75-80% gristle. It was a real struggle to find any meat on the dish. Since it's cheek, I expected some gristle. But what we got was disgusting. My wife, who I don't remember ever complaining about a dish to a waiter, felt compelled to mention it. The waiter seemed genuinely concerned and said he would discuss it with the chef. But inexplicably, it was never brought up again. The next time he came over, he asked if we wanted anything else and then proceeded to give us the desert options. We were still hungry, since we had to leave most of our main course on the plate. And the deserts sounded really good. But at that point, we were so turned off that we didn't want to order anything else. Instead, we headed to Ample Hill Creamery a few blocks away to get the taste out of our mouths. I don't know what we expected when we mentioned our issue to the waiter, but we expected some response. We were still charged for the dish (the most expensive item we ordered and one of the more expensive on the menu) and we weren't offered an apology or anything to make amends.
As a final side note, it seems strange to call a menu "family style," if most of the dishes are difficult to share. Our tostadas, though tasty, came one to a plate, thus requiring us to saw them in half. It was a mess. The shrimp aguachiles was a single bowl of soup that we just had to pass back and forth. Finally, the food came so quickly, we were out the door in under an hour. It was busy and I'm sure they wanted everyone out as soon as possible. But when I go out with friends, I want to be able to hang out and chat and keep adding to the order. It didn't seem like this was encouraged at all. I can't imagine returning here. Bummer. read more
