    Onion soup
    J D.

We started with their Crispy Squid and Onion Soup. The squid was delicious and the onion soup very tasty. For mains we had their Lamb chops, Veal chops, and a steak. Each was served with triple cooked chips (French fries), rocket salad with parmesan and either peppercorn sauce or red wine jus. Each of the meats was cooked perfectly and were most tasty. The triple cooked chips were excellent and the peppercorn sauce heavenly. For dessert we chose Sticky Toffee pudding, whiskey iced parfait and a Scottish cheese board. The Sticky pudding was the best we have had and the parfait light and very nicely done as was the cheese board. Service was excellent and the restaurant clearly a very popular destination.

Made our way to a Clachan Grill on a trip driving through Ballater. Cozy restaurant with wonderful food and decent prices. I started with a great Haddock appetizer. Main course was the Lamb Steak. My wife had the cod. Desert was Sticky Butter Pudding. Priced per meal based on 2 or 3 courses, both under 40 pounds. Add a bit more if you get a filet. A+ service, food and prices.

Sirloin steak with rocket, chips, and red wine jus. Outstanding!

Tucked away steps from the Ballater Hostel, you'll find a gem of a restaurant. If you're looking for a cozy sit down restaurant that's open past 8pm, then look no further. We feasted on a three-course meal that included a starter, salad, steak, fries, and dessert. Every part of the meal was fresh and delicious, but my favorite was the soup of the day. The servers gave great advice and were attentive as well. It was more than just pub fare, and the price reflects that. Nevertheless, we would gladly return anytime.

    Table setting

We were wowed by not only the food but the service and the ambiance. It was peaceful and delicious. A classy restaurant that is t too overbearing. The dishes were supreme. We were a party of 5 that sampled many dishes and were not disappointed with any.

    Filet Clachan style.

Decor was modern and classy in the brasserie, while upscale and relaxed in the lounge. Both areas uses the same kitchen but have slightly different menus. We dined in both areas a few times during our stay. Brasserie is perfect for a special night. Servers were used interchangeably between both restaurants and were profesional and accommodating. Everything was made with care and with local ingredients. So the flavors were outstanding. Must order dishes are: Fish and chips ($18) - huge flakey piece of haddock perfectly fried to perfection with a light exterior crunch. We had a lot (10+ spots) of fish and chips around Scotland. And without a doubt this was the best. Usually fried items make me feel a bit heavy, but this was not the case here. Served with homemade tartar sauce, chippys and peas. Solid side dishes, but the star was the fish. The fish and chips is worth a trip of its own. Seared sea bass ($20) - a decent sized fillet with couscous and broccolini. The restaurant knows how to cook fish. And it really shows in this dish. Accompaniments were solid too. Especially the couscous. Carrot cake ($3.50) - moist, fluffy, carroty, with lots of walnuts scattered throughout, and a huge pile of cream cheese frosting. Not too sweet lol most English desserts. Gingerbread pudding ($8) - warm yet moist cake with strong gingery undertones. Every component was well executed and works so well together. The warm cake with the house made vanilla ice cream all topped with their rum toffee sauce. I'm dreaming about the day I come back for this. if u could get anything here, this dish would be the one to get!

Everyone enjoyed their meal except me. The chicken was good but the pasta was bland. The mac and cheese was kind of bland as well which is surprising. Its a very nice bar restaurant. According to my husband it was less gamey than what he's used to, likely due to the domestic farming of the deer and every other time he's had venison it's been wild. So if you're not into gamey meats, but curious to try venison, this could be a great option for you. We ordered a few cocktails and a glass of wine during dinner, but we've noticed a trend. It takes a long time to get drinks out here in the country and I'm not sure why. There were 3 waitstaff for the 7 tables and while the food came out like clockwork, drinks were slow to come by. We got our first set of drinks before dinner and were able to sip them during our meal. I was really excited about dessert and we ordered the cranacan and the sticky toffee pudding. My husband ordered an old fashioned and I ordered a glass of wine, but they weren't delivered until well after dessert was concluded. We even considered canceling the final drink order until our server informed us that the drinks were being made just then, and yet we still had to wait another 10 minutes before we got the drinks. In total we waited about 30 minutes for the 2nd round of drinks and by then we just wanted to leave. The restaurant itself is quaint and cozy with a nice loca feel. And once again, be sure to set a reservation in advance.
