I came here earlier in the week for a meal with my mother. It was Tuesday steak night (not good for me, being a vegetarian with vegan tedencies whenever possible...), when I booked I was however assured that alongside the two ' la carte vegetarian options the chefs would make sure there were some other things on the menu which I could eat.
The drovers has a lovely setting, a cosy pub set amongst fields and rolling hills. There is a garden and children's playground. The interior is tastefully decorated, if not a little dark. The staff are friendly and yet none invasive.
My mother opted for the steak, £10 accompanied with vegetables. I was presented with just two options, the cream-laden spinach and ricotta ravioli in a creamy tomato sauce or the cheddar cheese barley and leek risotto. When I asked for more options the waitress went to ask the kitchen, who offered me a stuffed portabello mushroom with mashed potato or a main course sized version of a starter, namely the asparagus mousse. None of these options seemed particularly imaginative to me, they are all standard options for the only vegetarian in the party. At least there was no mushroom stroganoff on the menu... After a little hesitation I opted for the small bowl ravioli, despite my vegan aspirations and lactose intolerance.
When it arrived I was impressed by the aspect: there were many colours and the sauce was not white but a velvety red colour. The tastes were fresh, as was the pasta, but somewhat lacking in seasoning. My mother found the sauce for her steak a little runny but everything else seemed to work.
For pudding we both opted for the creme brule (I was still quite hungry after my main). The brule was nice but the sugar coating wasn't crunchy enough, the homemade shortbread seemed a little store-bought and the red berry compote was clearly freshly defrosted.
£35 for all without drinks. A little expensive for what it was, plus I had indigestion from all that cream and didn't really feel like my dietary requirements were well catered for. read more
