This was the second time I had eaten at this new steak and seafood restaurant in the seaside burgh of Arbroath - home of the famous Arbroath Smokie. First time I had hosted a group of golf journalists and I was too busy shmoozing them to really enjoy the food. But it must have been ok because I decided it was the perfect venue to take a friend for his birthday dinner. He is vegetarian. I am defintely not and I wanted a place that I too could enjoy. Overlooking the harbour with a river running alongside, it's a pretty looking restaurant - clean lines, contemporary use of wood and stone, two or three levels and simple furnishings in keeping with its branding. Had the set Valentines Day menu of three courses plus cocktail for £30 per head. The starters were a nice touch with a choice of five canapes between us which made it easy to ensure at least a couple of them were fish or meat for me - lobster spring roll, salmon tartare and goats cheescake were all delicious washed down by the best cocktail I have tasted in a long time. I would have another one if I wasn't driving! Steak for me sourced from a local farm, and a vege vol au vent with a very modern twist, for my guest, followed by a tasty passionfruit and ginger parfait. Chef is passionate about using local Scottish produce and that comes through strongly in menus. Great food, great service, good value. I would defintely recommend a visit if you are in Angus and check out the special deals page. read more
