Our 7 person group has reservations for Forgan's and we were promptly seated in one of the back rooms. There were a few other parties present so the room was loud but had interesting decorations with mail carrier bags and newspaper articles (someone clearly spent a lot of time on decorations, especially with the flowers at the front). Our waiter was attentive throughout the meal and I ordered the following: -fish and chips (4/5): beautifully cooked w crispy batter and glistening fish but they forgot that final coating of salt that ties the whole meal together. I added salt and it definitely elevated the dish but this is a pretty significant oversight so I'm rating the dish based on what was presented to me. The chips were thick, crispy and well seasoned and the tartare sauce was tasty and peas interesting and good. Overall, solid fish and chips but I'm hopeful I can find better in the UK. -highland sling (4.25/5) : a refreshing and fruity raspberry drink but nothing memorable restaurant. -sticky toffee pudding (3/5): as soon as the dish came out, I knew it was dry. 'Sticky' is literally in the description and this pudding was not that. The flavor was decent but this was a disappointing end to the meal. Good was delicious and ambiance was pleasant. I am giving a 3 because asking for ketchup was like pulling teeth. We both got fish and chips and do not care for tartar sauce. They gave us each a small saucer with about a once of ketchup. When asking for more we were given 1 more to share. Then our server disappeared. My husband had finished his drink shortly after being served and was never asked if he would like another. We had to get up and actually go to the kitchen to get more ketchup, and this was after getting up and asking a server at the front for more. I understand it may not be a Scottish thing to put ketchup on your fish and chips, but when you are located in a highly tourist town like St. Andrew's I know we were not the only ones asking for ketchup. Our server only came back when he was at the kitchen when we asked. We were finally given a double amount because of asking. But he didn't return until we were done and our fish was cold by the time we got more ketchup. read more

We made reservations the day before for two and were looking to eat at around 7:30 but the only availability was 8:30. The very kind hostess said if we arrive early that may be able to get us seated earlier. If not they had a table we could sit and wait and have a drink. Upon our early arrival, our table was not available. The table they suggested we could have a drink at was occupied by people eating. There was only a chair for one person to sit. It was recommended that we check their sister restaurant next door for a place to sit, have a drink and wait for our table (See review on Mitchell's Deli). They did not have space. We decided to sit on a bench outside the restaurant. Once our table was ready, we had a really nice meal. I ordered fish and chips and my husband had the ribeye (I believe). We ordered bread as an appetizer that didn't come until the end of the meal, but otherwise the meal was very nice and our server, Kady, was very sweet. I had several vegan haggises (something I did not know existed before!) during my two weeks in Scotland--this one was the best of the bunch. They were also very nice about my toddler being a toddler, which I don't always expect with vibes like this. Wonderful, kind service. read more

Put off and off-putting. A quaint place that's in reality a fraudulent ruse. My bet is it's resting on it's past laurels. Read on - It's ALMOST something but alas is just gas and no soda. The staff is strangely zombie-like and charmless. This in a wee place called St. Andrews where it's IMPOSSIBLE to find such types. REALLY!!! Every single place we went into was welcoming and friendly. Not this place! Rude at the front and it continued. I own a resturant and can tell you exactly whats going on: a great little place got popular. With success came big time dreams and a middle-management hire that computerized them, commercialized them (you'll see brochures lying about that cost a pretty pound), and price increases. I tell the owners of Forgan's kindly here and now- "Turn back! Don't forget your humanity! You've lost touch w/ the community! Pomposity is a killer. Yes, things are currently ok. Look at that bottom line! But you'll rue the day you went corporate. That moment you sold out. The moment you lost your way and listened to manager types and consultants and their ilk." We see your (too cool for THIS town) managers strutting smuggly about. Such smart haircuts ! Your servers loathe them and are taking it out on your customers. They (the servers) hate where they work and who manages them. Open your eyes. It's like a craft beer acting like it's Budweiser when what they REALLY are is so much cooler. This place just reeks of everything done by committee. Too many cooks in the kitchen - literally and figuratively. It's faux authentic. Forgan's is like biting into a beautiful apple only to discover its wax. Zombie-server said " we cannot serve your burger medium it must be cooked all the way through." Uh ok. Memorized regurgitated rule. Ok. So I got a burnt hockey-puck disaster. Maybe I'm just used to better burgers and "that's not Scotlands thing" you ponder? Ok ok! Fair enough! But fish and chips? Much better and cheaper at the fishmongers called "Tailend" but a few steps away. "Beef Pie is a SCOTTISH STAPLE!!! Their pie had to be good!" Nope! No way! The Cri-pie at Criterion's around the corner is far superior and cheaper. "The Hot Toddy" was a delicious whiskey drink. I've never had one but it was nice. That warrants the 1 star I didn't want to give. Sadly, in these cases the owners have checked out and the problem manager will be the only one to actually see this. "Tsk tsk" they will shrug. Ego will prevent them from registering any of this so it falls on deaf ears. It's too bad really. It could be so much more. One day soon it'll be out of business and the owners will never know that THIS is the moment the ship could have been righted. A fun space that will keep your table talking, whether about the decor or walk to the toilets . I am here for a visit from the US and my friends near Edinburgh drove up for a visit. I enjoyed a Sunday dinner with a Manhattan and my friends enjoyed their various dishes. The staff were gracious and professional, as was the service. Save yourself a headache and make a reservation. We have eaten in Forgan's many times before and enjoyed it. With family visiting we decided to book in on a Sunday. 6 times starters went fine. However, then the problems started. The lamb rump was expensive, yet the size was ridiculously small. The burger was a bit undercooked and it took ages to get the ketchup. The fish & chips, finally, was served well after the rest, the fish was small and the mushy peas and lemon were missing. And all that was handled quite poorly until we got a significant reduction on our bill. Normally, Forgan's was our go-to place, it will now be our let's give it a miss place. read more

Food took an hour and we weren't drinking. Seafood risotto was supposed to have clams, mussels and prawns. There were only two mussels and no other seafood in the dish. 20 pounds for a bowl of flavored rice! They reduced the price when I pointed it out. Atmosphere was extremely loud - our group of six was placed in a small separate room with a group of 10 men who were very loud. We had to move to another table. The music was boomy and not very helpful for conversation and ambiance. Staff seemed disorganized. The venison pot pie was good. Not someplace I would look forward to visiting again. read more

The physical location is really cool and the staff were great. Very nice, friendly, and accommodating. However, for what we paid for 2 people (almost $200 USD), I expected to at least like my food. I ordered a filet, cooked medium, and it came out well done. There was no pink in it whatsoever. The bernaise sauce it came with was so runny it wouldn't even stay on the steak. My husband got a ribeye and said it was the worst ribeye he had ever had. Both of us are people pleasers and I wish we would've said something, but how do you send back a steak that is overcooked? I hate to leave a bad review, but it upset me more to be out that much money and not even enjoy our food. We didn't finish a single dish we ordered (including appetizers). If you value the experience/vibes more than the actual food, I recommend this place. If not, don't waste your time and money. read more

Best lunch recommendation from a random guy walking on the street. The decor is fantastic, a little rustic, a little country, a little eclectic. The entry is lined with their herbs and produce for the day. Scotland's lovely weather allows for this. The service was phenomenal and everyone was friendly and helpful. The star of the show was the duck confit Shepard's pie. A fantastic rendition of an old classic. Most impressive was the fresh peas. Interesting place with whisky and gin flights. As with most places, they asked if we had a reservation, we did not, we sat at the bar for maybe 5 minutes and they then found us a table. The Cullen skink and the crispy haggis appetizer was good. The Venison sausage with mash, and the fish cake with egg were both excellent. Prices were reasonable and service was good. Thoroughly disappointed. The duration of our dinner was 3+ hours for a Thanksgiving meal served "family style," but was more of a tasting of a mere 2 brussels sprouts per person. It took an an hour and forty five minutes to receive our starters, and again the portions were minuscule. We finally got our main course over two hours in, and we were the last table to receive turkey-- everyone else was served chicken. For a dinner that was entirely reservation based, it was absolutely ridiculous to run out of food. For the price we paid, it was simply not worth it. There are other restaurants in St Andrews that could provide better service and a better price. read more

Cute Christmassy layout and decorations. However, the food was really poor and lacked flavour! The menu didn't really compare to the food. I had bangers and (lumpy) mash which had the same gravy as my partner who had the pan fried chicken. The menu stated that the pan fried chicken would be accompanied by a jus, however it tasted like powdered gravy with a lack of any other flavour. We really enjoyed our meal, and service and drinks were very good. The atmosphere is casual, and perfect after an excellent or rough day on the Old Course. Impressive for a tourist trap town. Forgans was super good eats. I had my first Cullen Skink there and it was smokin' good. If they had named it smoked haddock chowder I would have eaten it before. My wife had the scallops with chicken skin and they were cooked spot on. The chicken skin added a lot of flavor which is missing from a lot of British food. It was over cooked, full of gristle and was over priced. We were seated at the first table inside the restaurant so we were bumped continuously from both sides. My beef pie was the worst food I have ever eaten in a restaurant unfortunately. Looks like a fun place for a party in the lovely and unique bothy seating, but our family of 3 was not made to feel welcome, and the food was expensive and bad. Excellent atmosphere!! After a day walking the St. Andrew's ruins and golf course-this was lovely to walk in to and escape for a bit! The sea bass gnocchi was amazing!! A friend recommended this place to us. At first, I tried to book a table online, but there were no openings (it was a Saturday night). St. Andrews is a pretty small town so we simply walked by in the late afternoon and checked to see if they had a space. Perfect as we got a 7pm table. Word got he wise, if it's possible simply go in person. The place was really well decorated. The service had great timing all throughout the evening. We ordered duck confit, venison sausage and mackerel fish cakes. They were all really good (although the fishcake could use more fish). We had a chocolate brownie with fruit and ice cream. My wife indicated it was the best she's ever had. All the flavors were fresh and the bill was very reasonable. I would recommend this to anyone in the area. read more
