Forgan's has an amazing interior with a modern vibe and the fresh produce greeting visitors as they enter which is really neat! My husband and I ordered the fish and chips, chicken liver small plate, and scallops with chorizo small plate to share. They were all delicious. The chicken liver (although would have loved a few more crackers) was so good!!! The only complaint would be the seating arrangement in the back makes it for some really close dining so the whole time it felt like we were on a double date with the couple next to us. read more

As much as I hate to admit this, St Andrews did not wow my taste buds while there. Nope. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone a bit and try some traditional Scottish food but everything I tried fell flat. That is, until we came to Forgan's. At first we couldn't find this restaurant and this triggered my hangry to come through but thankfully before that became FULL BLOWN, we found it, down an alleyway next to the seafood restaurant I TRULY WANTED TO GO TO (but was closed). We were handed menus and I immediately saw things I wanted to doctor and order... And while fiancé wasn't hungry, he still wound up ordering, what a good sport.... What we got: - Scallops on a bed of lettuce: tasty scallops but as per usual with any scallops dish, not enough were given to fill you up... Tasty none the less though. - Salmon with the sides offered with the tuna main dish: salmon was good, not mind blowing but it satisfied my CONSTANT salmon craving. The green beans, tomatoes and olives lent a nice flavor addition too. - Roasted Vegetable Side Dish: I'm not a fan of carrots of potatoes (BLAHHHHH!) but this was a great side, so good that I ordered another post meal! - Haggis: THANK GOODNESS! I was scared we weren't going to get Haggis while in Scotland but we did!!! Fiancé wasn't hungry AT ALL though so he took 2 bites and gave me the rest. I've never had haggis before so I had no clue what to expect... And WHOA BABY- love! I couldn't pint point the herbs and spices added to the guts mixture, but I can tell you that they were tasty!!!! One of the most scenic restaurants i've been in! Right in the heart of downtown St Andrews, it was the perfect spot after a long day on the course! We tried the Scallop appetizer. They were prepared just right! I got the Butternut Squash and Feta/Spinach Wellington. It was delicious, and perfect hearty meal for a vegetarian (which i am not). Came here with my sister for late morning breakfast. Loved the atmosphere! Both exterior and interior of the restaurant is really bright and country-ish. The decorations were really really nice!! The breakfast served at 8.95£ each - not too expensive really. Staff were lovely and kind too! Overall I enjoyed my dining here. Can't fault the bar service. William went out his way to make a non alcoholic cocktail despite not being on the menu. It was a superb mojito. As for the Food well the menu looks promising with A good selection and mouth watering descriptions. This is as good as it gets. That's not to say the food is not good but it's not as fine as it should be to support such a delicious tasting menu. So excellent service but some way to go with the fine food. read more

If you read my reviews, you'll see I typically only review a restaurant if I think it stands out either good or bad. This place is awesome. I travel to the UK for 3 weeks every year and have been all over the island and pretty much every meal is eating out. I'd say I have a pretty good feel for the variety of restaurants and the quality of the food you'll find here. The restaurant is tucked down a long hallway kinda behind another restaurant. The first thing you'll notice is that the decor is something you don't typically see in the UK. It seems like most places here simply throw tables in a room and then decorate the walls with articles fitting the cuisine served. This place isn't like that. I could go on about it but you really need to see it for yourself. Really cool. Would recommend for a date night with candles on the table or even just a family or work dinner. Let's get to the food. I'm pretty disappointed with the food offerings in the UK. It seems that the majority of restaurants here serve Italian food, which are hit or miss. The bars serve mostly bland and starchy British fare. The best foods I've found are the Indian and Thai places. Forgan's serves Scottish fare but takes it up a notch. Everything I saw was cooked perfect and seasoned well. High quality fresh ingredients. I started with the haggis balls with neeps and tatties. Yum. I'll eat haggis when I'm here. It's ok.. I wouldn't make a meal out of it. The haggis balls were excellent. They are lightly fried making a shell on the outside. Hot and steamy. I ordered the duck shepards pie. Probably the best shepards pie I've ever had. The mashed potatoes had a slight crust on the top and underneath was delicious, tender duck, perfectly seasoned, in a light gravy. The duck wasn't gamey, almost tasted like dark meat turkey. A side of potatoes and veggies along with some additional gravy in a cup completed the dish. I complimented my meal with a flight of Scottish Gins. You can also do a flight of beer, scotch or wine. Service was excellent and five of us ate for 128 pounds. 2 starters, 5 mains, and 4 orders of alcohol. All five of us raved about the restaurant. I would consider this place to be a must visit in St. Andrews. One of the better meals I've had here for sure, if not the best. read more

This place is super cool! If you're looking for an intimate dining experience for two, maybe not the best choice on a Friday or Saturday night, but it's great for big groups of people - it's just that sort of atmosphere! We were there last weekend to celebrate a friends birthday - they have a post-dinner ceilidh every Friday and Saturday night so that was the main appeal. The set up is like a big converted barn (sort of) with lots of quite funky bits and bobs adorning the walls and ceiling. They have booth things off to the side which are almost like separate rooms (doorless rooms) that you can reserve specially, and I would recommend doing so if there's a big group of you. I had a mushroom and fennel crumble for starter, and sea bass in a lovely chorizo and tomato sauce for the main. And I was totally stuffed after the two courses! However, this did not hold me back from ceilidh dancing! The ceilidh is from about 10 - midnight, and is really good fun! They also serve cocktales (yes that's right) which all contain some form of ale. It sounds wrong but they are so so right! Definitely get one before your meal!! You may have noticed I've not really talked much about the food, but that's because in all honesty it wasn't the star of the show for me. I really hate to write this review because we had so many wonderful referrals. Our experience was for a prix-fixe Thanksgiving holiday dinner, and while we of course didn't expect a true American Thanksgiving meal, we did expect an edible attempt. Unfortunately nearly every component was a miss... the "loaded" brie and cranberry potato skin appetizer was a charred potato skin with a dime-size bit of cold brie and cranberry. The pumpkin hummus was ok but tasted like garlic hummus instead of pumpkin. The brussels sprouts were boiled and overdone, while the accompanying "crisp" bacon was underdone and soft. The turkey tasted more like turkey roll and the "roast pork stuffing" was like a pate inside the turkey roll. The small corn on the cob was so overdone, the kernels were shriveled and it was cold. The apple pie for dessert was so bland and colorless, with undercooked crust, I actually wanted to ask for cinnamon or some sort of seasoning to spice it up. My daughter's veg meal was a mushroom risotto that had three mushrooms and tasted like cream of wheat. The atmosphere and decor of the place are wonderful though, as was the apple crumble cocktail to start, and because of the glowing referrals, I would probably go back, but in the end we were pretty disappointed in the quality of the food. read more

Then we opened the door, walked in, & we were impressed by the decor. It really is pretty on the inside. It's very open, with a mix of rustic & modern decor. The menu consists of traditional Scottish fare. Everyone raved about their meals. I had the mussels and a side of kale. The portions were large, so I should have asked for a small. It was so delicious that I tried--and failed--to finish it all. The ambiance here is also quite nice. There's clearly an attention detail from fresh herbs grown on the patio, candlelight on the tables, and grass fixtures (a nod to the local connection to golf). THE BAD: The toffee pudding was a bit dry though the presentation was good. That said we also ordered the cheesecake which was good. THE UGLY: Nothing of mention. OVERALL IMPRESSION: The 5.0 rating applies to the region of St Andrews though if this was located in London or another large metropolitan area I would rate it as a 4.5. Ok experience but not really worth the money or effort, but nice ambience. We had a large group of 16 guys, and the staff and restaurant don't really appear prepared for larger groups. For appetizers they ran out of the scallops, them the haggis, and the waiter had no idea what was in the sweet potato soup or how to describe it. The feta onion appetizer in a pastry was tasty. The main dish of lamb was ok but fairly bland needing at a minimum more pepper and some herbs. Dessert was tasty. the only place to eat in st andrews, of course just my opinon after staying for 2 nights. you can eat at the hotels, michelen stars etc. but this joint was serious good times. we were lucky to have one of the large booth, private dining areas that open up onto the main dining hall. the service was superb - young friendly staff. and the food, nothing super special, but very well made and promptly served. the best bit...saturday night...traditional Scottish kayleigh dancing...everyone gets involved, mostly middle aged american tourists on their golf trips but it was smiles all round, everyone making idiots of themselves, and actually some surprisingly successful routines!! loved it. not sure where the 'cuban' bit comes from. nothing i saw indicated that. read more
