Overall, a great experience at CJ's Big Dinner in Bar Harbor. While it's a little bit touristy, I'd say just lean into it and enjoy the treats! The menu is EXTENSIVE for an ice cream shop. They have so many scooped flavors (including several blueberry ones), soft serve, shakes, and the list goes on. We were happily surprised with big scoops and very tasty ice cream. It tastes like a homemade ice cream, and has a lovely texture. The line may look long, but I will say it moves along quite quickly. There's a few tables on the side of the building, which are nice to sit at and enjoy. CJs is a vegan paradise for icecream a holics- there were 16 vegan flavors!!! We tried 3- the chocolate vanilla swirl cone was surprising with an excellent rich chocolate swirl which diddnt overpower the vanilla. The raspberry vanilla was to die for- totally rich with real raspberries and vanilla- impossible to distinguish from real dairy. We also had cappachino oreo exploded with great cappachino and oreo flavors! What you expect from a great ice cream place - good amt of people but fast service and great taste! It's a picturesque quaint shop on Main Street. It is cash only but I feel like they give you a decent amount. Service was really fast but there was only one other person in the shop when I went. I got the blueberry soft serve and it was good. It was sweet which I liked but it had what I would call seeds in it. I wish it was just 100% smooth. Would I get it again? Super cute ice cream place that always has a line; however the line moves quickly. There's a ton of flavors including chocolate, vanilla, and wild Maine blueberry soft serve (you can swirl chocolate or blueberry with vanilla as well). The flavors are on a chalkboard outside the shop but if you're unsure what they are you should try to peek around before you're called up to order because it's a bit of a madhouse inside and they don't do samples. Stopped in CJs after dinner at a local restaurant for an ice cream dessert. Husband had the sea salt caramel ice cream and I had coffee. The portions were huge. We ordered the smallest portions and they were way too much. I'd love if they offered one smaller as I ended up tossing a good chunk of my ice cream. Service was great. There seemed to be a flavor and option for everyone. I got the grapenuts ice cream, and my son and husband enjoyed their flavors as well (and they are quite the icee cream aficionados). For those In the Midwest, the texture reminded me of Braum's ice cream (creamy, dense and smooth). The chunk distribution of materials (grapenuts, cookie dough, etc) was evenly dispersed as well. The ONLY issue is that they are a CASH ONLY business, and while they have an ATM in the corner, the machine only accepts debit cards. After owning an ice cream store for 5 years, I consider myself well versed in ice cream. Everywhere we travel, I try ice cream. This place had lots of flavors from which to choose. The display cases looked awful and needed defrosted. I settled on a scoop of something called Maine something, which was vanilla ice cream with peanuts, peanut butter cups and something else. What I basically got was a scoop of vanilla ice cream with one part having a bit of toppings in it. The ice cream was not rich and creamy, which means cheap ice cream. My husband ordered a milk shake and he got flavored milk. The shake was so runny that he tossed it, which is not at all like him. For $17.50 that has to be paid in cash as they don't use credit cards, I was immensely disappointed. read more
