Restaurant Bar Area Vibe & Decor
Scott K.

*City Woking Backwards?* As you can see & read from my previous review, I really like it here...and have for decades. One of the most important things in the hospitality & restaurant industry is consistency. Unfortunately, my previous meal here fell extremely flat. The hostess was not too friendly nor welcoming. Rosa however was sweet & outstanding as usual and provides 5-star customer service. It's a very comfortable setting -- simple yet sleek, tastefully decorated and always clean. There's different sections to dine with an outdoor patio too. And a rectangular bar with some flatscreen TV's. I've eaten their Chinese Chicken Salad serval times -- in person and takeout. It's always excellent and one of my favorites. Especially on a hot day or night, when craving a nutritious flavorful salad. This visit, the salad itself was plentiful and displayed well as usual. But the chicken was so dry and chewy it was like eating jerky. Also, because the chicken was so dry, it absorbed most of their delicious tossed dressing. And for the first time, my wifey & I had to ask for extra dressing, which we've never had to request here. The last time dining with City Wok, we also ordered the Cod with Black Bean Sauce. It was amazing and it was takeout. We couldn't believe how good it was and how well it held up & tasted opposed to dining in. The cod fish pieces were slightly thick yet flat and the outer coating was minimal. This time? It looked different. It tasted different. It was all battered coating like big larger chunks of sweet & sour chicken or pork. There was barely any fish and it was overcooked. It was as if we were eating from a different restaurant. It reminded me why I stopped ordering battered coated Chinese food from most restaurants, because it's all batter with barely any fish/chicken. What happened to the cod in black bean sauce you prepared and served before?? The veggies were good but did not save this fish dish. Additionally, the white steamed rice was dry and didn't taste nearly as fresh as it should. We expressed our dissatisfaction with Rosa during our meal and she was apologetic. It was early in the evening and didn't appear to be any sort of management or ownership present as observed in the past. I considered not posting this review because I really like City Wok. Always have and my intention is not to tarnish them. Was it an off day? Is there new cooks & chefs? Did they suddenly change the cod in black bean sauce recipe and how it's prepared? Did they change food supply vendors? Regardless, the way I see it? Both items ordered were not good. The chicken was way too dry & chewy. The fish was mostly batter, with barely any fish and overcooked. Simple rice wasn't good either. And I'm out 50 bucks including tax + tip. I've noticed Jamie at City Wok pays attention to their Yelp reviews and usually responds back, regardless if reviews or positive or negative. That's excellent customer service which often lacks at most places these days. I hope City Wok understands there might be some issues in the kitchen. But no matter how great their customer service is, I'm not too sure if & when I'll be returning back here. PS I previously posted photos of the cod but for some reason they're not included in this review. But they are visible here on their Yelp page

I've always been a fan. It's changed location to the mall now which I don't love but it's closer to me. The Chinese Chicken Salad & lettuce wraps are always good. My husband loves the City Wok Chicken & you can try it for happy hour between 3-6 daily for $8.95. It's filling. Service is always good here. Nice patio with misters for those hot days.

I haven't eaten at City Wok in over 20 years. The last time I ate there the food was fast-food quality at best. They have since upped their game to a true dine-in, high quality dining experience. The food was fantastic, very authentic, and the service was impeccable! The ambiance was refined, quiet, and intimate. The proximity to the shops is also very convenient for a day out.

Great food and the staff are really amazing. They explain the menu well and serve you extremely fast. The location is on the outskirts of the shopping mall and allows for ample parking. I ordered the Chinese chicken salad, Saigon soup and yang chow fried rice, which fed me my husband and daughter. We had rice left over to go because the portion was so generous. The price is great as well. Whenever I am in palm desert I will be definitely visiting. The ambiance is inviting as well.

Friendly and attentive staff. Food served hot & fresh. We were fortunate to catch the all day happy hour so the prices were discounted on some items. Great deal!

Food is fast and fresh with a diverse menu. Friendly staff and generous portions. A great stop for anyone in town. Located at the mall with easy access.

Absolutely horrible experience. absolutely horrible experience. I asked for vegetarian fried rice with an extra egg, the ambulance was dark, which is fine, and I took half of my order home, and it was not till the next day that I realized that there was massive hunks of chicken in it, which explained why I had vomited all night long. the ambulance was dark, which is fine, and I took half of my order home, and it was not till the next day that I realized that there was massive hunks of chicken in it, which explained why I had vomited all night long. I called and tried to speak to the manager, he spoke very broken English, and didn't seem to care, wouldn't try to make things right or even apologize, horrible experience, I choose to only go to venues that actually care for customer service and this place does not He hung up on me after he said he would send a text advising he would make it right the next time I came in, however, I never text and he hung up, great customer service lol and I called multiple times back and they automatically disconnected from my phone call

We visit the area at least three times a year and have done so for close to 20 years; driving in from Solana Beach and we make it a point of getting to City Wok often. We use to frequent their old location across from the Marriot JW with the current location a true winner. On our last stay we stopped in three times . By chance we attended their 35 year anniversary party which was open to all. What a great time we had. We met the owner that night and on our third visit of the 10 day stay we had a great exchange with him. What is clear is that he supports his staff and is often present to greet customers and to lend a hand. This visit was not the first time we have seen him in action He knows his restaurant and easily navigates every inch knowing exactly where everything is and was genuinely interested in food quality our comfort as well as that of others . The Food is always top notch and the happy hour is a great option serving up bowels and appetizers and well priced drinks. We highly recommend it !! The location is easy to access with onsite parking. Seating at the Bar , Outdoors or in the Dining room provides well appointed options The staff is friendly and always interested in serving the best food and very willing to provide advice and address special requests. Alejandro and Fernando are outstanding Ambassadors in the bar area and the chef really knows her menu, she is outstanding. This is modern Asian inspired food which all can appreciate that is high quality with a great price point and we have never been disappointed . I really appreciate that CITY WOK is owner operated with a real focus on customer service that accommodates alternatives unlike the large chains . Great team always ready to serve up great food and drinks. You will not be disappointed.

Happy hour cocktail, City Wok.

However, I always drive by China Wok in Palm Desert so I thought I'd give them a try. I ordered asparagus chicken using their online app. They texted me with the approximate time that my order would be done which was really nice and then another text came in saying that it was done. The entrée was very delicious and hot. A little bit on the oily side and the portion was on the small side for $20. The only issue I have is I won't be ordering online anymore. They charge a fee of $1.90 just use the app. And didn't tell you in advance. I will be going there again, but I will just call in my order.

But the food makes up for it. The pineapple fried rice is as good as it gets. Best of all, it's served inside a carved-out halved real pineapple -- great for presentation and flavor! The sweet and sour pork is prepared perfectly and the sauce is just how it should be. Another hit is the string bean chicken. The beans are perfectly cooked -- not mushy but crispy and the sauce if flavorful. The chicken is cooked to perfection. We have more to explore here and will keep coming back. Only downside foodwise was a ho-hum wonton soup. We ordered a full bowl and sadly only got two mediocre wontons. Only two! And the broth is overloaded with cabbage. If it were "cabbage soup" it would've made sense. The other dishes still make up for it and earn this gem a full five stars.

I've been several times, the first time about 3 weeks after it opened. Didn't write a review then, or did I? Anyway... It is about the size of a Starbucks lobby, complete with standard decorative restaurant applications. There's a couple of tables and a half dozen booths to sit in. Soda selection is limited, and they do have a few adult beverages there as well. I don't drink, so I usually don't check out the drink menu. Not to make the staff seem too stereotypical, but as soon as I heard the yelling in the kitchen, with the language of the natives, I knew from the first visit, this was gonna be at the very least, a tasty meal. This visit was not a disappointing one. I ordered the potstickers, and an order of combo lo mein. Very good and very filling. And all the flavors were very authentic. I will say the service is hot and miss, but only because the language barrier is somewhat thick. But, I really don't need to ask for anything else past the meal being set, because that's ultimately what matters, in my opinion. As long as we communicate, the plates and cups aren't thrown at me, I'm a happy camper. I feel like this place is a little more popular for take out, but I think it is also worthy of a sit in meal.
