Went looking for a burger restaurant, so I went into the 3 restaurants in downtown Dallas, none served burgers. But the 3rd restaurant said " go to CITY TAVERN " . I went there and boy was I ever surprised. It Was Great. My server was great, I relaxed and enjoyed my meal. So folks if you want a nice mulitple choice menu that is thoroughly enjoyable and you are coming into downtown Dallas, you must stop in at this place. I ordered a burger and a few drinks. Burger was good . It what you would expect from a "tavern" and French fries that were perfectly crispy. Im leaving 5 stars because as someone not from Dallas i felt the waiter was super personable, super attentive and very friendly. They have a few big tv's with multiple games on and music going, all natural light but not dark and outdoor seating (think they might even allow dogs outside on the patio area just not inside).Im sure this place would be a cool spot to watch a big game or fight at. The food was decent, I actually really enjoyed my burger , but the fried pickles was just okay. The boys and I were switching out sports bar on this college football Saturday and found ourselves here. Sat down at a four top but the seats were terrible, small and our asses were sliding off so we moved over to a table for 8 that had better seats. Didn't appreciate the dick face server who's initial greeting included and ultimatum that if an 8 top showed up we'd have to move. I get it but there were at least 10 empty tables in the room. Not a good look for the customer. There were a few other snide remarks floated in there too. We had our one beer and immediately left. Stopped in just a few days ago for some light(ish) comfort food. Atmosphere is good sports bar and service is attentive and friendly. Good margaritas. Food leaves a bit to be desired. Cobb salad had 2 pieces of avocado and the chicken was like cardboard. Chicken fried steak was obviously frozen and tasted a little of feeezer burn. I would Stick to wings & French fries here. I ordered the Margarita Chicken. Food was good, but nothing to really get me to say "oh man I'm going back to The City Tavern on my trip back to Dallas". They fill up the plate but with a thin layer giving the illusion of more food than what is actually present. (Ex: the rice and beans) and the chicken portion was extremely thin as well. I was left still hungry even after ordering a side salad. Service was good. The gentleman collected my drink & food order within 6 minutes of being seated. And the entree came out exactly as I finished my Caesar salad. Ambiance is what you would expect at a sports bar on a Tuesday. Did wait quite a while after empty plate was taken away and drink was finished for me to get my check to pay. And the Caesar side salad shows $3 on the menu, however came to $4 on the check. $1 is not a big deal, however that's not the price displayed. read more

I visited City Tavern frequently when they were on Main Street. They moved to Elm Street and I just never visited. I finally did....and my first visit was good...average...but definitely not bad....service. And good atmosphere. Then came my second visit. I walked in on a Sunday at about 3:30. I'd say it was moderately busy. Several spots at the bar open, where I sat down. The bar tender was literally 4 feet from me, in a conversation with a couple. I waited a minute....then used my phone to scan the menu QR....the scanned the bourbons....then waited. The bartender looked back at me...but no greeting.......actually continued in the conversation. Odd...but I waited. Now, about 4-5 minutes had passed...not a huge amount of time but again she was 4 feet from me...she looked at me at least 2 times....zero acknowledgment. I was now staring at her....she turned and walked away from her conversation...but walked right past me! At the same time, a guy at the bar to my right obviously noticed that I was sitting there and said, "if you're looking for service, this ain't the place"! Wow! When another customer notices it the you're not being unreasonable! I responded, I see that! Thanks! And got up and walked out....zero contact with an employee. Maybe you have to know someone to get acknowledgment...maybe they don't need customers. Maybe the bartender was just a b****. I'll skip it though and definitely let folks know to try other places first. Service counts folks!! read more

Visited Dallas this weekend and after a four hour flight, my group needed to grab a bite to eat because we were starving! While walking through downtown, we came across City Tavern, checked out the menu and decided to give it a try. The man waiting on us was wonderful--attentive, friendly, offered suggestions and was overall great. Two of our group ordered burgers and fries, the other two had a grilled chicken sandwich with fries/tater tots. Decided to add some lemon pepper wings as an appetizer. Needless to say, those wings were pure heaven--crispy, hot and flavorful. Our burgers and sandwiches were also delicious, as was the unsweetened iced tea I ordered. If you're in the area, I definitely recommend City Tavern. Food is terrific, prices are terrific and the customer service couldn't be better. Came here for music. An artist I've been wanting to see ended up playing here, so we got tickets for my birthday. We decided to eat there instead of trying out a different restaurant nearby. We started off downstairs because the upstairs bar wasn't open when we got there. We sat at the bar and started off by ordering two vodka sodas tall. Got our drinks quickly. The bartender was friendly. Decided to order food as well. My girlfriend started off by ordering nachos, and while she was ordering, the bartender walked away and took some lady's order who was yelling from across the bar. She acknowledged that she got our nacho order (or so we we thought). Then when she came back to us, we ordered the turkey club. We waited. And waited. And waited just some more. Our turkey club finally came out. We figured we were not getting our nachos (and I wouldn't have wanted them after our sandwich anyway). I guess she didn't hear us, but it was just so odd. Anyway, the sandwich was absolutely delicious... And the only reason for any stars. After eating, we went upstairs for the show. We got there a bit early, so we were able to get a nice table up front. I decided to go get us another round of drinks since we had just finished our first drink. Went up to the bar where the bartender here was not as friendly. I ordered our drinks, and the bartender said she needed two IDs. I went and got my ID as well as my girlfriend's ID. Came back to the bar, waited in line, and when I got up there, she said "oh, I should have been more specific. I need two people." Great. She should have said that at first. I get rules... I'm fine with that, but say you need a person per drink. My girlfriend injured her foot the day before, so she's hobbling around. I was trying to be nice by going up there to get a drink for her. We had a tab downstairs (where IDs are checked), so I didn't think I'd have an issue upstairs. Anyway, got back to the bar. Ordered our drinks. Still didn't get them done correctly. And the bartender said "oh yeah, I saw you struggling to get up here". Thanks, I guess. At least I was able to get drinks for the both of us from then on. Overall, the concert area and the food are nice... But that's about it. I wouldn't come here to hang out. read more
