The City Tavern in downtown Dallas is one of those places that just feels right. A big part of that is thanks to the people who work there--Matthew, Brandon, Damon, both Peytons, Ashley, Trey, and the rest of the crew. They treat everyone with real respect, and it's not forced or over-the-top--it's genuine, and that kind of atmosphere makes all the difference. I opted for the wings and tots. The tots were fine, but the wings were a huge no for me , big red stop sign. They tasted like they had been pre-cooked and left sitting uncovered in the refrigerator for days, just waiting for some unsuspecting person to order them. On top of that, the service wasn't great. They also include an automatic gratuity, but it isn't clearly announced. The way the receipt is presented could easily lead someone to accidentally tip twice. I won't be back. Love having this place right across the street--always welcoming and super reliable. Tried takeout for the first time and ordered a grilled cheese with tomato soup plus sweet potato fries. Went looking for a burger restaurant, so I went into the 3 restaurants in downtown Dallas, none served burgers. But the 3rd restaurant said " go to CITY TAVERN " . I went there and boy was I ever surprised. It Was Great. My server was great, I relaxed and enjoyed my meal. So folks if you want a nice mulitple choice menu that is thoroughly enjoyable and you are coming into downtown Dallas, you must stop in at this place. I ordered a burger and a few drinks. Burger was good . It what you would expect from a "tavern" and French fries that were perfectly crispy. Im leaving 5 stars because as someone not from Dallas i felt the waiter was super personable, super attentive and very friendly. They have a few big tv's with multiple games on and music going, all natural light but not dark and outdoor seating (think they might even allow dogs outside on the patio area just not inside).Im sure this place would be a cool spot to watch a big game or fight at. The food was decent, I actually really enjoyed my burger , but the fried pickles was just okay. Stopped in just a few days ago for some light(ish) comfort food. Atmosphere is good sports bar and service is attentive and friendly. Good margaritas. Food leaves a bit to be desired. Cobb salad had 2 pieces of avocado and the chicken was like cardboard. Chicken fried steak was obviously frozen and tasted a little of feeezer burn. I would Stick to wings & French fries here. The boys and I were switching out sports bar on this college football Saturday and found ourselves here. Sat down at a four top but the seats were terrible, small and our asses were sliding off so we moved over to a table for 8 that had better seats. Didn't appreciate the dick face server who's initial greeting included and ultimatum that if an 8 top showed up we'd have to move. I get it but there were at least 10 empty tables in the room. Not a good look for the customer. There were a few other snide remarks floated in there too. We had our one beer and immediately left. I ordered the Margarita Chicken. Food was good, but nothing to really get me to say "oh man I'm going back to The City Tavern on my trip back to Dallas". They fill up the plate but with a thin layer giving the illusion of more food than what is actually present. (Ex: the rice and beans) and the chicken portion was extremely thin as well. I was left still hungry even after ordering a side salad. Service was good. The gentleman collected my drink & food order within 6 minutes of being seated. And the entree came out exactly as I finished my Caesar salad. Ambiance is what you would expect at a sports bar on a Tuesday. Did wait quite a while after empty plate was taken away and drink was finished for me to get my check to pay. And the Caesar side salad shows $3 on the menu, however came to $4 on the check. $1 is not a big deal, however that's not the price displayed. read more

I visited City Tavern frequently when they were on Main Street. They moved to Elm Street and I just never visited. I finally did....and my first visit was good...average...but definitely not bad....service. And good atmosphere. Then came my second visit. I walked in on a Sunday at about 3:30. I'd say it was moderately busy. Several spots at the bar open, where I sat down. The bar tender was literally 4 feet from me, in a conversation with a couple. I waited a minute....then used my phone to scan the menu QR....the scanned the bourbons....then waited. The bartender looked back at me...but no greeting.......actually continued in the conversation. Odd...but I waited. Now, about 4-5 minutes had passed...not a huge amount of time but again she was 4 feet from me...she looked at me at least 2 times....zero acknowledgment. I was now staring at her....she turned and walked away from her conversation...but walked right past me! At the same time, a guy at the bar to my right obviously noticed that I was sitting there and said, "if you're looking for service, this ain't the place"! Wow! When another customer notices it the you're not being unreasonable! I responded, I see that! Thanks! And got up and walked out....zero contact with an employee. Maybe you have to know someone to get acknowledgment...maybe they don't need customers. Maybe the bartender was just a b****. I'll skip it though and definitely let folks know to try other places first. Service counts folks!! read more

It offers a great vibe and the staff was friendly and were able to take our orders in a timely manner. They offer a wide variety of beers on tap and have decent bar food for you to munch on. The bartenders welcomed us right away and made us feel better about that place being snobby. Jason is an awesome bartender. Well everyone in there was absolutely friendly, including the bouncer up front. The drinks were good the scenery was really good for a Sunday night. I got some chicken wings and got a full basket of some outstanding wings. They are super generous with their servings. Most of the company, I was with couldn't finish them and I was definitely full. Super dissatisfying. Clearly a locals bar. In town for a large tournament and over 300 teams within half a mile. One of the only places not full. Clear to see why. Food was decent, but if you're not local, they could care less. Bartenders stood around talking about how drunk they got at work the night before, and stood there taking "recovery shots" right in front of me. Served locals that were drunk and ignored new patrons. Visited Dallas this weekend and after a four hour flight, my group needed to grab a bite to eat because we were starving! While walking through downtown, we came across City Tavern, checked out the menu and decided to give it a try. The man waiting on us was wonderful--attentive, friendly, offered suggestions and was overall great. Two of our group ordered burgers and fries, the other two had a grilled chicken sandwich with fries/tater tots. Decided to add some lemon pepper wings as an appetizer. Needless to say, those wings were pure heaven--crispy, hot and flavorful. Our burgers and sandwiches were also delicious, as was the unsweetened iced tea I ordered. If you're in the area, I definitely recommend City Tavern. Food is terrific, prices are terrific and the customer service couldn't be better. I will definitely go back the next time I visit Dallas!! read more
