Kevin installed my automatic blind in 2016, came back to fix it in 2017 (we used it less than 3 times in that whole time), then the blind is stuck again in 2018 after less than 5 usages. Today I text him, willing to pay him to fix something that repeatedly broken from his work, he said he had to charge me travel and gave me the new rate/hour, which I didn't argue too much. Then I checked how much he charged me a year ago, realized that he simply doubled his rate and wanted to charge all the travel time as well! Kevin installed a beautiful electrically-powered shade in our new condo, and just walked me through how to recharge the share motor. In the initial consult over shade selection, he was meticulous yet efficient in showing us the available options -- no sell job, just great info expertly described. While Kevin is certainly friendly, there were a few red flags that buyers should be aware of. We requested an estimate for cellular shades for our new ADU, and he brought a book of samples from Hunter-Douglas for us to browse through. He mentioned that he hadn't purchased anything from them for at least 10 years - he thought they were too expensive - and usually ordered from Graber (can't figure out why he didn't bring the Graber samples with him). On one set of windows there are some angles that would have been difficult to work with - Kevin said that the shades couldn't be installed unless the trim was popped out, and a bigger piece was installed. I said I would check with the contractor. He called later to let me know that the Hunter-Douglas shades would be $10,000-$11,000 (I declined), so he said he would stop by again with the Graber samples. We chose the fabric we liked, and 2 days later, he gave an estimate of $6500. I found out that it would be too expensive to replace the trim, and asked if it was possible to install the shades another way...he never got back to me. Contacted VIU Window and Home, and the owner orders exclusively from Hunter-Douglas. Immediately after taking the exact measurements that Kevin did, Gladys gave me an estimate of $5100. She also said that they would be able to install shades on the window with the tricky angles. If you get an estimate from City Shading, be sure to get a second one. read more

I had a great experience with Kevin of Oakland Shading Company. I was thinking of adding another awning to my deck area, and I asked Kevin to give me his opinion if it would keep the afternoon sun from hitting the deck area. Most people (in my experience) would say anything to make a sale, but he was so honest in telling me that it really wouldn't do what I wanted it to do. So refreshing to meet someone with this integrity. He did point out that the outdoor outlet where the plugs were needed to be protected from rain with an adequate cover, which was something that could have saved my house from fire if water had gone into it from a heavy rain. This was something I wouldn't have known and was never mentioned by the guys who installed the other awnings. This kind of care and consideration is rare these days, and I just want to recommend Kevin if you are looking for honesty in those you deal with. I also asked him if he would fix my gate lock, since he had the proper tools and he did that gladly.
