Gary installed my window coverings. Unfortunately when I had to request a warranty repair, it was a complete s--- show. I think I averaged 4 attempts/follow ups spread across 1 month to contact Gary to every single response I received, half of which were just restating my problem and not actually addressing it. Also it took 4 visits (which meant over 20 attempts to get in touch) and over 1 year to actually get him to come to visit to do any warranty repairs, and when he finally did come, he was unable to deliver part of the warranty repairs that I reminded him about at each attempt to contact him. All he offered was "I'm sorry but I'm retiring soon." So sure, go ahead with Gary if you want blinds installed. Be prepared to wait, and wait ... And wait , then wait some more if you need any service on his installations. read more

It seems like you will have a positive experience with McWherter Window Coverings if all of the following criteria are met: 1) you reach Gary, the owner, on the first attempt at calling, 2) you are fine with months delay in receiving your blinds, and 3) there is no problem with your order whatsoever. When we met Gary a year ago to order an initial set of Hunter-Douglas blinds, he was great. He came out, did measurements, provided samples, and we placed an order. The problem came when one of the blinds arrived after our initial order. After he installed all the blinds from our initial order, he did not want to come out again to install the last one. I called him a few times without receiving a response. Finally, he E-mailed me a YouTube video for self-installation. I paid for full installation and it seemed like Gary did not want to come out to install just one extra blind. A year later, this year, we decided to order a few more blinds and wanted to give Gary another chance. The communication took multiple back-and-forth, mostly me having to follow up over E-mail or phone every couple of days to make sure that he was actually doing his job. Finally, after installation, I noticed two of the blinds had a 1" gap next to the window. I explained to Gary that these two blinds did not cover the windows completely. He agreed to not charge me for those two blinds, which I appreciated, but wished he had communicated the right sizes to me in the first place. After all that, we noticed more blinds retract and do not cover the window in its entirety on the bottom. Gary reassured me that his son, Tyler, can look at it. Tyler came out and had no idea this was a problem. He attempted to address the problem by calling Hunter-Douglas. Hunter-Douglas told him he needs to order weights for the blinds, which he said he would. However, after two weeks, I still have not heard anything. I E-mailed Gary. Did not get a response. I E-mailed Gary again. Got the response "I'll let you know." I was not confident that he will let me know without me having to constantly police him about the order. *Two months* later, he returned to my home with the weights that he supposedly ordered, and it turned out they were the wrong weights! Then of course he gave me the "I'll call you Monday to follow-up" and never did. I have spent thousands of dollars on new blinds from McWherter Window Coverings and they are defective without any resolution so far. Gary came out last week and things started out okay but within the first 2 minutes he pulled down a shade that was not working and would not go back up. He did this before I had a chance to tell him not to pull it down. Then he tried to fix it or get it to go back up. I tried to tell him that I needed to fiddle with it but he kept saying he could get it back up. I just got more and more upset. The first contractor that Lowes referred me to was very difficult to work with, only available on certain days/hours that didn't work for me. My mom had ordered me some really nice Hunter Douglas Roman Shades and when I received them I couldn't wait so I tried installing them myself. I ran into a few issues and decided to find someone in the area to help me out. I google searched and didn't really find anything. I found out about Gary through yelp with 1 review and thought I would give them a call. I spoke with Gary and gave him all the info, he gave me a quote and said it would be no problem. He sent over his son the next day and about an hour and fifteen minutes later it was about 20 degrees cooler and looked amazing! I'm disappointed that things changed in the service with this company so dramatically. The warranty with Hunter Douglas is a big selling point, and at the time of purchase was told multiple times that this company would take care of any warranty issues. After a couple years two of our blinds needed warranty work on the cords. I called Gary numerous times. I believe my first mistake was saying that I needed warranty work on a voicemail. After over a week of calling ( multiple phone numbers he had listed) several emails, I final blocked my number and he answered. Said it wasn't a problem and he'd be out to our home that following Wednesday. He never showed up. I called and emailed over the next 48 hours. Googled to see if he was still in business. I called Hunter Douglas directly and they tried to reach him, which he also ignored. Finally he emailed to reschedule. He showed up, late. No mention of why he flaked before or any remorse. Told me it would be three weeks. After over three weeks I called to get the status of our repair. Radio silence for another week. Finally on a Sunday morning I get an email asking if the next wed- fri is good. I immediately email back saying Wednesday would be good. Nothing for a couple days, then telling me he would check his schedule. He would not answer a call. This is 5 weeks from my first call. Then finally he said ok to Wednesday and I should have know..... flaked again. Except this time he is in possession of our blinds. I called Hunter Douglas ( they have notes from this issue since I called the first time.) They can't get ahold of him, but left messages. The customer service was extremely nice although they can't do much since Gary is a third party seller. She was sympathetic to this whole fiasco and helped come up with ideas to resolve this. She mentioned a police report may be needed if there is no contact. Wouldn't you know it, I got an email ( not a call) from him after the Hunter Douglas customer service called him and left him a message saying that. He said he'd be at our home in less than a half hour. He was late but at least we have our blinds and we're done. Again at this final appointment to get our blinds back there was no apology or even the mention of another missed appointment and being late to the reschedule. This took 7 weeks because of the lack of communication! During this time (as recommended on this page) I went with a different company for the rest of our Hunter Douglas blinds and window coverings. It should have been two weeks for warranty service. But in that 7 weeks, we purchased our skylights coverings and 4 others window blinds through the other company. Beware if you need warranty work on your blinds from McWherters. read more

Sales and installation with McWherter went very well. Unfortunately, 2 of 7 blinds purchased began to fail after only a few months. As Hunter Douglas quality has slipped over the years, I count on the lifetime service from corporate and had expected prompt response from Gary as he was very explicit that he would handle any repair issues. That did not happen after emails and phone calls over 7 weeks. I ended up at National Blinds in San Mateo with the two defective blinds which they quickly sent out to have the lift mechanisms replaced under warranty. Came back less than 2 weeks, so I did waste 5 weeks going back to the source. One star deducted for product defect, one for lack of effective support on repair. read more

We bought a new home in Pacifica, that had 33 windows and 5 Anderson doors (2 windows per door) for a total of 43 windows that needed covering! I contacted Gary and he got back to me immediately, and came out to our house that weekend. He is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, he brought every possible style & color sample and had some great suggestions. The initial estimate came out a bit above our budget, he was very happy to work with us to bring it down within the amount we had to spend on window coverings. Two weeks later everything arrived, and even though there were more than 40 shades to install he and his son & their assistant got it all done in less than 3 hours!! Everything looked and worked fantastic, but Gary noticed a small blemish on one of the shades and insisted on replacing it. I admit to being a picky guy and a perfectionist, its not always easy to meet my expectations and Gary exceeded them! I had interviewed four other companies since this is an investment and this company troubleshooted my odd shaped windows and even repaired several shutters that were installed in three bedrooms from Costco six years ago. I do not believe the negative review posted about thiscompany when I know how hard I am to please. I would be happy to share my photos with anyone considering this company. In addition let it be noted I also had an odd shaped window requiring an odd shaped shutter resulting in that shutter arriving later than the rest.I was informed ahead of time of the delay and common sense would tell you custom shutters or blinds take longer. Great service - local company - Gary and his team knows what they are doing. Installed a dozen of mix of auto and self serve shades in my rebuilt home in Pacifica. Install done about 3 years ago now and was super easy, very clean and precision work. Service and install was a snap, and over the years if the blinds had any issues the team came out to fix asap. (batteries on one died, and one string adjustment needed). Would not use anyone else for quality is way better for a reasonable price.
