The up side: tons of events for all crowds throughout the year. The downside: lack of quality restaurants, convenient parking and small space with tendency to overcrowd.
Overall, City Plaza is a destination spot several times during the year for many local Triangle gatherers from music events to community events and even Farmers Markets. Whether it's for the Oak City 7 concert series, WinterFest, Hopscotch, Movies on the Plaza, Brewgaloo, OUT! Raleigh or activities for larger holidays: New Years Eve (First Night), Fourth of July, etc. You'll almost always find something going on at the end of Fayetteville Street.
As for the food options, they're few and far between, but feel free to take your choice of fast food from Jimmy John's, Shish Kabab, Fire Wok, or Z's Pizza. Grab a healthier snack from Happy & Hale if it's open and not insanely crowded. Get a drink from newly relocated and opened Issac Hunters or have a nicer, sit down experience at Jimmy V's (the Sheraton Hotel's restaurant).
Raleigh had put some work into the space by placing a fountain, various shrubs and four large metal pillars lights with various oak decorations. I'd love to see them convert the entire area into a green space, but doubtful that will ever happen! Overall, the city maintains some great events for the space and it is definitely well used. Public bathrooms would be a nice touch, but you can usually sneak into The Sheraton if you don't look too dazed from festival drinking. read more
