I was passing in between the state buildings and spotted this amazing open green space. You'd never know it was here because the traffic on Wilmington and Salisbury can't see it because of the buildings. It doesn't even show up as "green" on Google Maps. That's a bummer because it's a beautiful space with a lovely view of the Raleigh skyline.
This public space was not part of the original plan for Raleigh. It did not come into existence until 1977 when the architect designed it as an open lawn over an underground garage.

This tucked away mall sits in the middle of the state government buildings in between the State Legislature and the Archdale buildings. Its got a swath of open greens and walkways to jog or take an after lunch stroll. I came here for the Obama rally a few years ago and found this mall. Local farmers come here every Thursday with a truck of produce and set up a small station for people walking by to pick up some fresh produce. read more
