If you're a spiritual person who just happens to be fed up with people using the Bible to oppress…read moregay folk, then you might just consider St. John's MCC your saving grace. I know that I do. The Metropolitan Community Churches denomination is known as one that originated for the LGBT community, but being a different-gender-loving (straight) woman who is a steadfast LGBT ally, I feel right at home in this church. There are special things happening at St. Johns -- lives are being transformed here all of the time. There is an 845am service that is more traditional in style, and the 11am service is contemporary worship. Ethnically, St, Johns is a beautiful mix of races and backgrounds. I was raised Roman Catholic, and I have gotten to know and understand more about the backgrounds of my fellow members who come from Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, Jehovah Witness, and other religious backgrounds. The sincerity with which the deacons, pastors, and friends at St. Johns pray for and with me/us is something that has completely transformed my outlook on christian spirituality. The place reeks of LOVE, and there is always someone willing to pray with you and guide you in a positive direction. Bible study group on Tuesday is always informational and inspirational. I can't say enough about how great this church is.

This is a beautiful park in the City of Raleigh. There is also a sand-surfaced playground with a swing set. Loads of parking, good signage. I stayed here for a bit to watch the volleyball league. It looked like good fun! I stopped by this park yesterday afternoon to wear out my kids on the playground. I was stunned…read morethat the playground was completely empty and all to us! The playground equipment was all brand new and the area was mostly enclosed with a fence. Within this space, the play equipment is appropriate for kids 5 to 12 years old. The floor of the play area is rubberized for safety. There's a super tall slide that you have to climb up via webbed ropes (so not very easy for smaller kids unless they are avid climbers). The slide is not for super tall people. It has sharp turns inside it that cause you to knock against the sides as you go down (I know from experience). It also caused my 4.5-year-old daughter to lose one of her shoes two times she slid down. There's a giant spider-web-like climbing area for kids to play on, as well. There are a couple of benches for parents to sit on as they watch their kids. There is a smaller area off to the side for kids 2 to 5 years old that has sand, multiple spring riders (an animal, an airplane, and a car), a small Yogi-Bear see-saw, and a small slide with steps (though the steps are a bit steep). It's disappointing that this area is not fenced in - especially since it's for younger kids who tend to wander. Luckily, there's a bathroom facility building across from the playground and next to the tennis courts. There are two stalls inside the ladys' room, one sink, and a heated blow dryer. Outside the bathroom, there's a handy water-bottle-filling station. There's also a dog run area (next to the parking area that you enter from on Wade Avenue) with benches, trash cans, and a dog waste station. If you want to host a party or picnic, there's a picnic shelter you can rent for $12 an hour (it has 6 tables and can host anywhere from 36 to 60 people). There are 2 tennis courts that have push-button lighting that works from dusk to 10 pm year-round. If you like Sand Volleyball, there are 6 lighted volleyball courts to choose from (they are first-come, first-served). On Tuesday and Thursday nights during league play, courts 1-4 are unavailable from 6 to 11 pm. There are 2 softball fields and a youth baseball field. I highly recommend this park if you have kids!
