I started taking my three schnauzers to City Paws three years ago with the previous owner. She was amazing. The business changed hands last year. The quality of the cut has declined. Prices have gone up and with each visit the new owner adds additional charges. With new charges for dropping off early, picking up late and more. For positive review you get $10 of the next cut. Take the positive reviews with a grain of salt. Time to find a new groomer who appreciates loyalty without continuously escalating charges. read more

I've been looking for a groomer near our apartment since our usual one is a bit too far. I tried city paws once and they did a pretty good job so decided to try them a second time. The second time was not good at all. They cut my dog in multiple places. Didn't even trim his nails correctly so one of his nails is now curling in and I have to try and do it myself. Worse of all it seems like pricing here seems arbitrary/ random...the guy who rang us up was so shady. Last time my dog was cut it was $65 (literally a month ago). This time the guy was like "oh I guess this time it'll be $75". You guess? Um...ok... My dog has been to so many groomers and never has gotten hurt by any other groomers. We've never gotten a complaint about his behavior other than that he can be squirmy when cutting nails. Reading the other review from the former employee about the owner's anger management issues just makes me sad that my dog likely was scared and stressed and in addition, hurt/ bleeding. And there are so many uneven spots on my dog's paws and legs it's laughable. never coming here again. read more

I am a new dog owner and new to the salon and I made that abundantly clear on the phone weeks before the appointment. I bathed my pup before the appointment because he had been playing around in mud earlier that morning, and when I got in there and told the owner of the shop this, she gave me a snarky little attitude and said "Well why did you do that? Now the haircut is not going to be as good." EXCUSE ME?! ... I don't know about you, but if I want customers to stay at my salon and not write reviews about poor customer service experience, maybe stop treating your customers so poorly...especially new customers. I am literally debating right now driving back there to pick up my pup. This has made for such an awful first time experience. This isn't a bad groom but maybe I've been lucky and gotten exceptionally awesome grooms at every other place I've been. I have the most difficult dog ever to groom but other places still manage to give my dog an even cut even on the face and paws. That wasn't the case at city paws. There were parts of her skin that were red due to the sheers cutting too close and there are several spots that were missed throughout her body, mainly under her arms and belly area. Face and ears are not at all even but it's hard to really see it in the picture posted. I will have to trim a lot myself to get it even. My dog has separation anxiety. Not the TERRIBLE kind where she tears up the cushions and floors, but the PITIFUL kind where she is howlingly miserable when I'm gone and only really content when I'm around. And when we reunite after any kind of time apart, it's just like those videos where the military person returns to their dog after five years and the dog just about dies with joy barking. As such, I try to keep grooming appointments short and sweet. In the past, when taking my dog to the groomer, I would pay in advance, so that when I pick up my dog she doesn't bark the house down (with loud joy) and rile up the other doggies. At one place I used to go, I'd hide when I picked her up and talk to the staff, humiliatingly, quietly from behind a display. And I'd be prepared with treats and ready to pick her up and run as soon as possible. NOT SO AT CITY PAWS. I've been going there for nearly a year now and I'm ecstatic about it. My dog is excited to see me, yes, and does the whole "stretch up on me glad to see you" thing. But she is far from distressed, and I can pay *after* I get her. It is a miracle! I credit this to several things: 1) Their policy of not crating dogs before or after grooming (hooray!) 2) Nice folks 3) Little dogs only (my dog likes little dogs best) 4) Appointments in the two-to-three hour range, reliably (BTW, there's a nice nail salon right next door complete with massage chairs, if you ever feel like joining your dog in the pampering experience.) And does my doggo look great? Yes, she does. I'll post a picture (it's the one marked "Polly." They have a cool "hair length" display that you can use to show what you want, and once we figured it out she looks good every time. And I've yet to find a nick on her. But the main thing for me is, she's happy. It makes the only downside (hard-to-find parking) totally tolerable. (But after a while, you figure out where the good street parking can be found.) I will go to City Paws as long as I'm in the city and live with my four-pawed friend. read more

We tried City Paws for the first time today, based on recommendations from Yelp. We were looking for a groomer that wouldn't give us an appointment at a certain time, then actually keep our dog all day as she became part of an "assembly line" of grooming. I've been searching for such a place--our dog is a rescue and doesn't do well waiting for her turn in a kennel. After emailing the owner back and forth with some questions, City Paws seemed like just the place to take our dog Abbie. Our dog was nervous when we got there, but when we left her, the owner had picked Abbie up and was gently explaining to her what was going to happen. It was a nice touch and I'm sure our dog felt more comfortable than she would have if she'd been immediately shoved into a crate to wait. Our appointment was at 10am, and Abbie was finished by noon, just as promised. When we came to pick her up she looked awesome, all happy with her puppy cut. The owner had Abbie loose with her behind the counter, and when I mentioned this, she said she didn't like to leave the dogs locked up just to wait, and that she'll even let them observe other dogs being groomed sometimes, so they know it's OK. I love this and think this is just the kind of groomer we've been looking for. We'll definitely be visiting again. read more

I have been taking my growly little lhasa apso, Joey, to Margaret every couple of months for over 6 years now. I still drive to Capitol Hill from West Seattle since I moved there 6 years ago and I'm most likely going to drive to Margaret when I move to Tacoma in a month. The distance is worth it to me for a lot of reasons. My dog is not a fan of other dogs, he's nervous around them and just wants to be left alone. I've taken him to other groomers and every single one of them takes ALL DAY to groom him so he's stuck with a bunch of other dogs and miserable all day. Margaret takes 2 HOURS to groom him from start to finish! I walk to one of the delicious nearby restaurants for brunch, then stop by Remedy Teas to try a new tea and read a book or the paper. The next thing I know Margaret calls to tell me he's all ready. When I pick him up, he's right there chillin behind the register with her as happy as can be. With other groomers I never know who is grooming him and I never know how he is going to look, and he has had some seriously bad (laughable and embarrassing) haircuts. Margaret knows how to cut a dogs hair. He always looks great afterwards, she knows how to cut his little face to make him look his cutest, and he smells good for weeks. When his hair grows out he looks even cuter (I have her cut him pretty short so I can come less often)! Joey has had a lot of skin allergies and issues and Margaret has given me lots of great advice about products to use, vets to see, and food to try. She doesn't sell anything to me, she just steers me in the right direction and gives great recommendations. She has been very supportive in his health and wellbeing and I appreciate her advice and expertise. His skin looks awesome now. It has been impossible for me to find another groomer that even comes close to City Paws (even the highly rated grooming place in West Seattle right by my house), so a farther drive is worth it for me! Plus her rates are great too! I've never had a single disappointing experience with Margaret and I've taken Joey there for many many years. She is the absolute best. read more

I brought my pup in for his first haircut today based on the 5 star reviews by all you yelpers and it couldn't have been a better experience. Margaret greeted us as soon as we walked in, inspected my pup, and within minutes, was getting her face licked off by the little guy. I came back an hour later and there he was, sitting on her lap behind the front desk. He was fluffy, smelled great, and looked like a new pup but with better hair. I have taken my malti-poo to City Paws for a long time and I have always been happy with the results. I usually wait way too long between visits and she is difficult to groom as well as being very skiddish , but always friendly. Margaret always does a nice job and after trying many groomers I am so happy to have found City Paws!! One of the nice things is as soon as my dog is ready Margaret calls and I go get my dog. Some groomers you have to drop the dog off in the morning and they sit in cages all day and you pick them up after 8 hours which is never fair to the dog. My dog is usually ready in about 1 1/2hrs. Many times when I pick her up she is just in the shop milling around with her dog behind the gate. read more

I just moved into the neighborhood and needed a new groomer for my chihuahua-papillon. First impressions were great, the groomer and receptionist were very friendly and super sweet to my dog. The service was quick (took about an hour, and I dropped her off with very short notice of an appointment). When I came to pick her up, I was told that there was an "accident" and the groomer had cut her ear when she was being trimmed. I understand that accidents happen but the cut was deep and she was bleeding. I really wished that this hadn't happened because she looked amazing! She smells great and is super fluffy, but the cut on her ear ruined the whole experience. The only reason I'm not rating 1 star is because the staff was SUPER friendly (I didn't have to pay for the haircut and they told me they would pay for a vet visit if needed) and the fur trim/bath was really well done. I sadly won't be bringing her back, but had they not hurt her, this hands down would've been our spot. read more

I love City Paws and so does my pug! I've brought my 15 year old pug in 4 or 5 times (I try to get her in every 6 weeks or so). She gets the works- bathed, claws trimmed, ears cleaned, teeth brushed and anal glands expressed. The ladies there are wonderful. They take amazing care of my little old lady. I can tell that they really care about my dog's well being. She looks fabulous when I pick her up and I can tell she truly enjoys going to see the groomers. Margaret has been great; she gives my dog lots of personal attention and TLC, and always takes the time to check in with me before and after the appointment. He always comes out looking and smelling great. Scheduling is quick and easy, and grooming is always fast and thorough. It's also nice to know that he's not locked in a kennel in an assembly line, as I've seen at other grooming facilities. I could have sworn I already wrote a review of this place, but no matter. We only take our dog here to get her nails clipped and ground (with a dremel), but it's always great. We used to take her (our dog) to another salon on Cap Hill, but they have a surly attitude and a ridiculous credit card policy (they basically charge you a 100% markup) - so I tried out City Paws and wasn't disappointed. It doesn't hurt that I can walk here, and the owner has always been super friendly every time we come in. If our dog had long-enough hair to need trims and shampoos and what-not, we'd definitely take her here too. Call ahead, as it's not a huge shop and you'll likely need to make an appointment for anything more than a nail trim. Highly recommended. read more

This place might be fine if you have a fru-fru dog like you see in the picture here. If not, I wouldn't go here. We took our labradoodle to get her first grooming last week. My guess is that this place has no idea how to groom a labradoodle, even though I see them all over the place in Seattle. The first impression was bad. I walked in and there was no one at the desk, and all I could hear was a dog yelping in discomfort in the background. When the owner did come out, she seem hurried and stressed. My wife and I were hoping we could talk over the haircut, since it was our dog's first visit, and there are lots of different labradoodles with different styles of hair. She didn't seem to pay much attention to our questions, just said it would be about 3 hours, and took our dog to the back before we even discussed how much it would cost. Overall, just a really poor customer experience. All of that would be forgiveable if she had gotten a decent cut. The hair under her belly was not cut at all, while the hair on top of her back was cut short. Some spots on the sides were cut, and some were left long. She has several mats that were not cut out or taken care of. In short, it was a pretty crappy haircut. The kind that if you got yourself you would be looking for someone to fix ASAP. We were not at all pleased, and will not be going back. So, I'm not sure why there are so many great reviews of this place. I'd steer clear. read more

My roommate and I took our 1 year-old morkie to City Paws this past Friday. We knew our puppy had a few rough spots since she rolls around a lot and has thin fur, so a shorter cut was necessary. We dropped her off at 11am, were told she would be done by 1pm, but received a call at noon that she was done. When we picked her up, the haircut was uneven and the face was left much longer than the rest of the body. There were a few long spots on one leg, while the other was much shorter. It definitely looked like a rush job; the lady said she likes to "get the dogs in and out" so maybe she needs to slow it down a bit. On a good note, our dog's fur is extremely soft and she was happy after the haircut; she usually runs out of the back and piddles a little on the floor, but this time she held it together. We may try this place again and let them know about our first cut there. For now, 2 stars is all City Paws gets. read more

I must say I was a bit apprehensive about this place at first. When I called to make the appointment they didn't even take my dog's name or my own. They were able to get her in just a couple of days. If you've lived in the area, you know this is a true rarity. And, when I arrived we were the only ones there! Margaret definitely proved all of my fears to be unfounded. She finished the entire groom in about an hour and a half. When I picked up my little bitch, she was strutting her stuff, because she knew she looked and smelled like a million bucks! When we got home the all of the neighborhood dogs wanted to sniff her butt, and the neighbors couldn't believe she was the same dog. I'm just afraid that the word on this place will be getting out, and it will start to go down hill, just like some of the more highly reviewed places on this site. (cough cough Great Dog) read more

I took my 5 lbs maltese here after reading such great reviews. The groomer is nice, clean store, and my dog was done at the time she said he would be done. Finding parking there isn't the easiest, but that's not why I'm giving it 2 stars. For being such a dog-friendly state, I would imagine that the groomers here would be impeccable. But, sadly, my pup came back looking uneven, his beautiful face was lopsided, his ears weren't even cut (I had to ask her to trim it a bit more-come on he's little and when you groom him down to a summer cut, his ears should balance out with the rest of his body). Sadly, he had a rash on his belly with uneven hair spots and he just looked pissed. I would walk him outside and his friends would sniff him and look at him like "wtf happened to you?!" His leasing office friends saw him and said "Wow.. he's not sick is he?" Crap..come on!!! If anyone said that to you and your dog, you really wouldn't consider giving a place another try right? My husband came home from work and our poor pup ran up to him and the first thing dad cried was "what happened to you?!" Then a barrage of questions came my way, "where did you take him? how much was this? why is it so uneven?! did they just use scissors? where did you find this place?!" Needless to say, that night, our baby sat next to his daddy all. night. He didn't even want to come near me! I became the evil witch lady to took him to the torture room for no apparent reason. Sigh. I defended the place with the said first paragraph but it's agreed that we won't be bringing our little guy back here anymore. The lady is nice, but I think $50 is a bit much when I've paid $35 in Southern California and $40 in of all places, Nebraska, and our baby has come back looking immaculate. Immaculate. Evenly shaved, smooth nails, ears cleaned (oh yeah his ears were still full of hair! argh!), butt butt cleaned out, and he didn't smell like he was dunked in perfume. Meh, I'll give her a little more credit in that when she handed over my dog, she reported to me that he "looks to be in good condition- healthy skin, coat, and great temperament." Well, cool, but we all know what condition our dogs are in before we take them to the groomers right? I wish I could LOVE this place, but eh.. I suggest taking your $50 bucks elsewhere. I wish I would have read @ Lauren P.'s review along with the person who replied to her before I went here. Descriptively, they are on the dot when it comes to the way their dogs ended up looking. I took my shihpoo here today for the first time. I wanted to find a new groomer after having a terrible experience with the owner of the previous grooming establishment I used to frequent (Rex, also in capitol hill. I have a review on them here as well). Let me preface by saying that my shihpoo puts up a hell of a fight when anyone, including myself, tries to pay attention to his front nails. I knew Margaret might have a difficult time with him so I warned her of that when I dropped him off. the groom took about 2 hours and when I came back, my dog looked and smelled great! Margaret did a nice job giving him the exact cut I wanted, and no one has ever made his tail look so precisely styled and cute! Margaret was forthright with me and immediately told me that she wasn't able to cut all of his nails because despite muzzling and other methods, he wasn't having it, and sadly I wasn't surprised :( I noticed that his left dew claw was bleeding, and Margaret immediately grabbed some styptic powder to stop the bleed. I had a little blood on my hand so she wet a part of a towel and gave it to me. She was very apologetic and even gave me a little baggy of the styptic powder to take home, as well as the towel she gave me. This extra effort to help keep my pup comfortable and my clothes and car clean was really appreciated. She was compassionate, professional, and did a great job with his haircut. I will be returning here in about 2 months for another haircut! read more
