I saw the salon advertise a builder gel manicure, that is supposed to be longer lasting, more durable, and healthier for your nails. I usually get dip powder for my manicure, but I decided to try the builder gel manicure for the first time. With acrylic nail extensions, the manicure was $70. It was $5 extra to get either the coffin or almond shape. The cat eye nail polish is an extra $15 as well. I also got a classic gel pedicure for $50. My salonist, Bee, finished my pedicure and did a great job in 30 minutes. The builder gel manicure did take about 2 hours and I was there past their closing time. I've been here a handful of times in the past year and my experience has been progressively worsening each time. I get the impression that the experience is different depending on whether you're a regular vs someone who drops by once in a while. I've come with pre booked appointments and other times as a walk in. If I'm coming as a walk in, I always ask if they have availability, and they always say they do. However, the experience always feels rushed. They will seat you immediately, but each stage of the nail removal/manicure is protracted as they try to manage you amongst other clients. I also don't like the fact that my fingers are left soaking in acetone for 10-15 minutes while you're breathing in the fumes. Other places I've been to will use a cotton wool and wrap your nail in foil. My other issue is how rough they are with the dip manicure removal - several times the tech caught my cuticle with the drill, once causing a small amount of bleeding. I honestly did not even care that she didn't apologize, but was more irate about the fact that the mistake kept being repeated. I try to warn them beforehand that my cuticles and nails are sensitive but not sure this is being factored in. At one point I did make my irritation known, after which I noticed that my tech and the one sitting next to her started talking in another language and laughing several times. This could have been a total coincidence but left me feeling very awkward. Overall, I've had several disappointing (and painful) experiences here, and sincerely hope they take my feedback onboard and make changes. I treated myself to a full set and pedicure in a flash flood. The spa is well located on light street in Federal Hill and it's large, well-lit, and well appointed. I had a problem getting my massage chair going but once it got going it didn't stop! My pedicure was phenomenal, even though she cut my nails much shorter than I generally go. She did an excellent job cleaning around my nails and the polish selections are great. The lady who started my nails was the owner/manager?? She did a cuticle clean first at my request but then passed me to another employee for my nails. She did a decent job but she KEPT going over my cuticles with the drill WHICH I HATE AND IT HURTS. Then she tried to blame me for her carelessness talking about next time don't have her clip your cuticles first...umm, no ma'am, how about you pay attention! The biggest issue is that they pull the standard no credit card tips scam. I hate this. I know it's a tax scam. I get it but stop pretending you can't take credit card tips (and pointing people to the lobby ATM that you make fees on) and just take them when offered. That's seriously a pet peeve of mine. My manicurist at home takes checks: that's fine, but don't expect me to put my debit card in some random ATM to save you $.015 in taxes My last word of caution is about the gel colors. I wanted my toes and nails the same color. They offered me the regular color for my feet which went on first and gel for my nails. The colors weren't the same. Basically test your colors before they dry. They still get 4 stars because the service is good, and I'm quite happy with my nails. read more

I used to love this place but it has really gone downhill. I am picky with my nails in that I expect you to do a better job than me. The last two times I have been incredibly unhappy. When we got there we we're rushed from start to finish; and we're only given two minutes to decide on a color as they waited impatiently next to us. We paid for leg scrubs, which were the fastest I've ever experienced by far. We felt like we were somehow inconveniencing them, and I felt like apologizing but I wasn't sure what I had done wrong... The nails themselves weren't bad, just not very good. They didn't really adjust the cuticles, and she cut one of mine and it was bleeding into polish. I was welcomed in for a walk in and sat for 20 minutes before being spoken to again, once I got seated the tech reprimanded me and told me not to ever take off my own dip and pointed to a nail that had broken (not by choice). I had been desperate to get the old dip from another salon off my nails so I went here since it was close to my home but I was shocked by the high price for the dip removal and a regular manicure since I normally pay less for regular pedicures and that much for gel. Also, the tech got mad at me for my thumb not being in the perfect position but due to the natural curve in my thumb (hitch-hikers thumb) but I was struggling with what he wanted from me. Overall, I felt like I was it was not a very warm and welcoming experience, it was expensive, and my manicure didn't turn out that great probably due to something I was doing wrong based on the attitude of the tech. read more

They ruined my cuticles and left my fingers coated in clear nail polish. This place was unsanitary; especially considering the fact they painted a hair onto my nail. The nail tech continuously cut up the skin surrounding my nails with her tools, and didn't even acknowledge my bleeding. After tons of charges I was never told about, my total for an acrylic fill with gel polish came out to $65, for work that looked absolutely awful. Upon asking them to clean up my fingers, that had both pink and clear polish all over them, I was barraged by employees telling me that it's not their problem and they don't do that there, and that this was a normal nail salon experience (which it clearly is not). My nails were left bumpy and completely uneven in length; most at complete diagonals despite me pointing it out during the manicure. Heavily disappointed from high prices, poor quality and dreadful customer service. Will not be returning. read more

I've never had a down right bad experience. But recently I went for a pedicure and a manicure. I got bullied by the manicurist into getting a dip manicure. She began buffering my nails while my feet were soaking. She kept looking away which was making me nervous and she slipped and cut my finger. She put some of their blue "sanitizer" on it and told me it would "go away" it continued to bleed when she went to put acetone and foil to take off my old gel polish I said please don't put it on that finger it will burn. She waved me away and did it anyway....and it burned and continued to bleed. She then bullied me into getting callous remover on my feet telling me how awful my feet were. Normally I get that treatment but honestly I was scared of any scraping....and I told her that. She yelled that the slip was a mistake and that my feet are so calloused! And telling me to relax Basically I'm a fool and should've just left immediately. Then I tell her I will not be doing dip I will be just doing a regular manicure. At least this time I didn't fall for her bullying and insisting. Basically I wanted to just end it with little confrontation. She charged me full amount for everything and I left NEVER EVER TO RETURN. THIS PLACE IS DIRTY AND SHE BARELY SANITIZED ANYTHING AFTER I WAS CUT BY THE TOOLS! Do NOT recommend this place. I've come to City Nails on three separate occasions now for a pedi, waxing and gel mani and each time they have exceeded my expectations! I was loyal to another spot in Fed Hill, but after a bad experience there I wanted to see what else was around -- and I'm so glad I did! City Nails is a million times better! The nail tech's attention to detail is really what makes this place a 5 star in my book. When I first came and got a basic pedi the woman who did my nails went above and beyond what any "basic" pedi should be. She gave me the most intense leg and foot massage and scrub! She even took a small paintbrush dipped in nail polish remover and cleaned up around my nail beds to make sure the lines were perfect. I'm looking at my toes about 4 weeks later and still no chips! They also use new tools for each customer. As for the gel mani, I can't stop looking at my nails -- they look so perfect! They had so many colors to choose from! The young lady who did my nails, Tiff, did a great job! The atmosphere inside is also a lot nicer than the other nail salons in Fed. It's much more open and clean. I walked in to City Nails & Spa today because my normal salon was closed and this was a short walk away. I got a gel manicure and signature pedicure by Michelle and it was EXACTLY what I needed. [PROS] - I was able to walk in without an appointment and was helped right away. - The pedicure was REALLY good, way better than I was expecting. Definitely treat yourself to one of the more expensive pedicures if you can afford it because it's worth it. - Michelle was really good at cleaning up my cuticles carefully. I have terrible cuticles that grow like weeds and I'm used to a sloppy job, but she made sure both my fingers and my toes were spot clean. - They have a ridiculous amount of gel colors to choose from. I was visiting from DC for a concert and wanted to get a quick pedicure before the event. I walked in and only waited a few minutes to be seen. The service was excellent!
