Yes, they still call this a mall, but the Medical University of South Carolina has taken over a large amount of the space which used to be Sears and a couple of other places that decided not to stay at this mall. Of course there is the proverbial food court which is apparently expanding a bit with a few other places joining the Chinese and Japanese food there along with the Chick-fil-A, so maybe there is a bit of Hope for a portion of the mall anyway. One corner near the food court used to house a higher end jewelry store but it is now been taken over by a cell phone repair station which used to be nothing but a large kiosk outside of the food court. At the other end of Citadel Mall, away from the Medical University of South Carolina, is the Target store which is a nice one and a large one. That mainly is my draw usually in coming to Citadel Mall but on this occasion I was accompanying my wife to an appointment with a physician with the Medical University. Frankly this mall has seen its better days and has little pull for people to come her. Sad times over the last number of years. read more

Even the Charleston Police Department has left this mall. Back in the day it must've been a nice mall, now there is only about 4 or 5 stores left Didn't find what I saw on Yelp, they left years ago. Here I am In the early days of 2025- the holiday season has just ended. The mall has several newly closed Christmas oriented shops but it is still holding its own. There's and indoor playground I may have to come back for with my granddaughter! read more

Pretty rundown older feeling mall. Many empty store locations and a lot of damaged floor tiles with tape over them. Was largely empty of people around lunch during the week; the stores must get good night and weekend traffic to stay open. It's a large mall with a lot of small shops, but not much to make me want to come back. The main stores are Target, Belk and Dillard's. Other than those, not much reason to come. The food court is small with just five restaurants - Chinese, Japanese, cheesesteaks, Subway and Chick-Fil-A - plus a couple places serving bubble tea and pie. Mall center seemed fairly clean, as did the food court seating area, just not a lot of stores to draw me back. read more

Citadel Mall is so depressing now. I remember when I used to visit Charleston as a teenager and it seemed great. There was always hustle and bustle. Now it's sad and dreary and a little dangerous. I'm rarely in West Ashley so I stopped by to browse through Target. I decided to step into the mall to see what's new and the answer is nothing! Citadel Mall has the nicest and largest Dillard's and Belk stores in the region. Both are two stories and almost 200,000 sq ft each. The best that the two chains have in the Charleston tri-county region. The Target store also underwent a recent multi-million renovation. The rest of the mall is under new ownership and poised to undergo a dramatic and total redevelopment to make it a more mixed-used property with office space, hotels, restaurants, sporting complexes and more upscale retail that fits better with the area. It's a huge project that is long overdue and it promises to be exactly what the mall needs. read more

The mall is going through some renovations right now and it is fairly dated. Most of the stores are empty and a lot of the ones still there are lower end. There is a Planet Fitness attached as well as a target though. It felt empty. I think the days of the traditional malls are coming to a close to make way for outdoor style locations. Northwoods Mall is a little better and I will most likely go there next time. My reviews are based on my experience where a 3-star review is exactly what I expected, neither good nor bad, just average. A 4-star review means something was extra special; service, food, location, etc. and is a great review for most places. A 5-star review means I was blown away with the experience. These are hard to come by and are reserved for the best of the best. I think may reviewers are too quick to throw five star reviews up for an average experience. A 2- star reviews means something was disappointing and a 1- star review means it was a bad experience all around. I hope this helps to understand my system. See you out there! read more

I haven't been to this mall in years but it seemed to have made quite a few changes. It seems like there were a lot less places to shop. Maybe its just me but it seemed dark and dreary. It wasn't upbeat...it actually felt pretty dead. I'm not complaining about that but the atmosphere just seemed melancholy for lack of a better word. There was also this big net up in the middle of the mall. Not sure why it was there now thinking about it I should have taken a pic. Maybe they are about to get ready for the holiday season. Not a lot of people and it has a low energy to the place. They were starting to set up the area for Santa. We might come back with the kids for that. I still really love Citadel Mall and being able to enjoy the experience of going to a real indoor mall in Charleston. I know that it will most likley not be around forever and there is a certain special meaning in that I can live the experience of a shopping mall while it is still here. I have been coming to this mall from ever since before I could remember and have been on the journey with this mall though its ups and downs. I still get excited every time I get to go to the mall. I really like the creative choices for stores and tenants that they have made in the last couple of years as they have gone through a different transition of owners and still really like the anchors like Belk and Dillards, but also the Food Court and other features the mall has. I believe this mall still has a good run left in it and I will be there along the way to support it. read more

Malls are a dining art but the Citadel Mall has managed to stay alive. There are so vacant lots but for the most part it is keeping a float with stores like Target and JC Penny as well as Planet Fitness and Sesame. The food court is small but convenient and there are some kiosks to keep you entertained as you walk through. read more

This mall is the perfect example of how big shopping centers will soon be extinct. I give them props for trying to Improvise and create a "lifestyle" center. They've added a popular restaurant The Tattooed Moose, a Planet Fitness and even some sort of medical office I believe. But those types of businesses don't provide the foot traffic the center needs to keep its actual stores in business. Some of the remaining stores are good retailers, Dillard's, Belk and Target. However these stores provide customers the ability to go in and out without entering the actual mall. Actually when I moved to Charleston I was at Target all the time and I never step foot into the main mall. I will say if there is a store you need in Citadel mall it's better to go there than another center because there's tons of parking and no crowds to vie with! read more

The Mall is DEAD... It can be revived, but it needs a lot of management help. Target, Belk, Dillards, and Sears are the only anchor stores there. I forgot that there was a VS there, but they are helping a lot of local businesses work in the storefront aspect which is cool. While there is rumors of new life coming to it. When I was younger this was the mall to go to. In the past 10 to 12 years, however, this mall has slid way downhill. I don't know if it's because of competition from the Tanger Outlets up the highway, or if it's simply one of those "dying malls" in a depressed area. Whatever the reason, about one third of the storefronts inside the hallways are dark and closed. I think it is only a matter of time before the large draw stores like Belk, and JCPenney, and Sears will close up and move elsewhere too. If you need to do some shopping, I'd like to suggest Northwoods mall, or the Tanger Outlets. There is just not enough left at Citadel mall worth driving to West Ashley for. I did find out from someone who works at the Post and Courier News that Citadel mall is now in foreclosure and I fear the worst for this, once grand, shopping mall! read more

I am a black man, not from this area. We moved here last Dec. Having said that, I went to the mall and like someone else was saying, this Mall is about to die. It reminds me of University Mall in Tampa Fl. Something else that I must point out, being a black man, I noticed that must of the people that rated this mall high were minorities and those that rated it low were not. Again, that point reminds me of University Mall, down to the theatre. I will not shop in this mall again, but not for the reasons that I mentioned. It's exciting to see things finally MOVE with the Citadel Mall transformation under their brilliant new owners who are revealing more innovative and genius plans to bring the mall back to life. I hope that they will continue to add classy touches like bringing back the mall fountains, adding overhead music and comfortable, themed seating areas throughout the mall. The fountains were so soothing, beautiful and relaxing and helped shoppers wind down and relax and spend more time shopping and dining at the mall. Without the sounds of flowing water and overhead music, one has a tendency to hurry in the mall, go straight to one store and leave. The fountains and music created an ambiance - an experience- one of being pampered, relaxed, enjoyable. They truly added a warm, upscale ambiance to the entire mall complex. Without these gorgeous water features and comfortable plush seating I honestly have no desire to spend extra time in the mall. The fountains are missed by everyone in the community. Restoring them along with comfortable seating, towering palms in the planters and other greenery would certainly encourage a happy, upbeat, upscale and positive overall environment. read more

So I give it a 3 star rating because over 50% of the stores are gone. There's no children clothing stores, just large department stores and few other brands like Bath and Body works, Victoria Secret and the food court. North woods mall is probably your best bet when it comes to store selections. However, I was pleased with the indoor playground park they have, which is $11 a child. And currently the children's museum has a pop up shop there which was also a blast, only $5 a person! read more

This mall has really gone downhill. I've been coming to this mall since I was a preteen. I've seen a lot of my favorite stores in the mall close down, which was very sad to me. The only places I really go to now are the big department stores and the food court... I rarely even venture far enough inside the mall to get to Victoria's Secret, I will just go online because nothing else in the inside of the mall is really worth looking at. The stores suck except Bath and Body and Target, the food court has nothing exciting, and overall it's a depressing place to be. This mall was just eerie. We grabbed coffee at Starbucks and decided to walk around the mall and see what was there before doing our shopping at the attached Target. Our visit was just before noon on a weekday and this mall was deserted. We walked the whole thing and saw no more than a dozen other patrons. Employees were leaning on counters, bored. No wonder. It's nice to be able to walk around and shops aren't crowded, but this was too empty. They do have a few stores of interest, namely Bath and Body works and Victoria's Secret. While I'd like to give this mall 1 star for not offering very much I'll give it 3 stars because it has a lot of potential. The mall is in bad shape and doesn't offer much but it appears that they are possibly renovating some of the inside, they just need to repave their parking lot and attract a few more stores; right now it appears that JCPenny and Target are it's saving grace. So I think with a little work and some added stores this mall could be a little bit of a better mall. read more

I'm a Charleston transplant, so I grew up in a world where shopping malls actually had good stores that kept you coming back for more. Saying that I love shopping would be an understatement. Sadly, the Lowcountry malls, the Citadel in particular, are a huge disappointment & leave King Street as my main option. Most of the higher end retail chains have left the Citadel in search of greener pastures, & I'm a firm believer that if Target left, this mall would have virtually no business at all. (No offense to train enthusiasts, but the presence of a locomotive museum is a dead giveaway that this mall needs some serious revamping.) Rumor on the street is that the mall is under new management in 2014, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there will be some improvement. (If they could bring in decent retailers, like J Crew or H&M, & a large department store, namely Macy's or Nordstrom, I'd consider myself one lucky lady!) This place has really fallen. Sad, It used to be the hub for all things in the West Ashley Area and loved going there. It is hanging by a thread. We went on Sunday morning at 11 and was shocked to find that most stores were not open yet. Sears and Belk not even close to open and seems like during Black Friday weekend it would be packed. Not at all. Thankfully Target was open and that saved our wasted trip. I hear all sorts of rumors about the future of this place but it will never be the place it was when our family did most of our shopping there. Sad! ;-( read more
