South Windermere Center is a great place to walk around, shop, and have a cup of coffee (or frozen…read moreyogurt). This shopping center has several places to eat (Starbucks, Normandy Farms, YoBo, TCBY, Three Little Birds), an Earth Fare grocery store, and a few other businesses like a barbershop, shop store, and office supply store. You've also got a tackle supply store, a library branch, a yoga studio, barre studio, and a kettlebell gym. There's even a community garden and convenient access to the West Ashley Greenway. There's plenty of parking, but be prepared to walk a bit. The best places to park are behind Earth Fare or in the outer parts of the Earth Fare parking lot, near Half Moon Outfitters. If you're lucky, you can snag a parking spot right in front of the businesses, but that road can get pretty busy too and drivers don't always slow down (or look). To me, this is a model shopping center for West Ashley, and I certainly hope we can get more developments like this on Sam Rittenburg Hwy and in the other areas of town.

A mixed use concept is currently under construction with a luxury multi-story apartment building, Woodfield Ashley Landing with self-contained central parking garage featuring upscale retail on the ground level with residences above. The entire site is being transformed with green space, dining/restaurants, and new infrastructure to include new streets lined with multi-story residential buildings having retail spaces on the ground level.

To me, Market at Oakland is a model of what a shopping center outside of town should look like- providing services rather than just stores- because most people shop online these days anyway. These businesses are close to home and meet your needs, like a hair salon, massage, banks, nail salon, and Firestone/auto care. Market at Oakland also has some great food options. I love Wasabi for sushi, and they have great lunch specials. Tropical Smoothie Cafe has some healthy options. There's also a Starbucks, McDonalds, and Chic-Fil-A if you want something small and quick. For people who live nearby, this is a lot more convenient than braving traffic to other businesses in Mt. Pleasant. The best way to enter, for me, has always been off Porcher's Bluff Rd.

This was the start of our day out on Kiawah Island. There's…read morea small, pet-friendly square where we took a stroll to explore the area. While the space is modest in size, it's absolutely beautiful and perfect for a relaxing walk on a nice day. Since it was around 85 degrees, we put Luna's dog shoes on for the walk. We highly recommend using dog shoes on hot days-they protect your pup's paws from hot pavement, sharp objects, and even things like bees (Luna was stung once, so we ve learned!). It can take some time for dogs to adjust to wearing shoes, so be patient. Use treats and positive reinforcement when they ignore the shoes, even for a moment. It really helps make the experience more comfortable for them.
