I have been unhappy with the Mexican food available in this area because it tends toward the extra sour cream and lettuce school of preparation, so it was a true delight to find a Tex-Mex place that did a better job. I also am a fan of the legendary Chuy's in Austin (wooden fish - woo!) so it was a delight to find that they've licensed out the concept and are making proper fajitas and fixings available to the masses who have yet to experience such blessings.
This location is placed in the parking lot of the Sterling Harris Teeter, so if you're not familiar with the area it can be a bit hard to find, but most modern GPSes will get you there without mishap. It shares the parking lot with the Harris Teeter so there's plenty of free parking. There's a lovely outdoor patio seating area, plus a genuinely refrigerated interior for those who consider eating outside as gauche. The interior is pleasant and new, echoing the theme set forth by the Austin location (classic cars -- if you haven't been there, all the furniture and decorations are made out of vintage car seats/parts), but without some of the accumulated grunge that gazillions of students produce.
We visited on a Saturday evening (She Who Must Be Obeyed and I and two friends) on my birthday, so we were in a party mood.
The drinks menu includes cheap generic American beers and cheap Texas beers (Shiner Bock!) and margaritas plus soft drinks, and are promptly served and serviced if you're dry. Warning in advance: the margaritas here are preternaturally potent -- two will noticeably affect your driving, so plan ahead. Complementary fresh salsa and chips are provided to give you a base to absorb the alcohol. It appears they use the same recipe for salsa as the Austin location: lots of chiles, onions and garlic mixed in with the tomatoes, and chips were crisp without being in your face about it. If you prefer cheese, the queso is absolutely top-shelf good. It'll put you in a good mood just by looking at it - this is the apotheosis of Velveeta. It's also a good sized bowl; one bowl was about right for 4 people with no leftovers, which would have been a crying shame to waste.
We ordered a bunch of entrees and got back to celebrating. Chuy's is justly famous for fajitas, which are a relative rarity in Virginia (at least good ones anyway). They offer both chicken and beef and the meat was superbly charred and tasty -- tortillas and all the fixings supplied, and they kept them coming until the meat was gone. We also had a steak burrito and classic cheese and green chile enchiladas to round things out -- try the Boom Boom sauce for the burritos, it's basically queso with green chiles added, which makes a tasty addition and a nice kick of heat to whatever it goes on. They gave us some extra, which we used on the enchiladas to great effect. The burritos are seriously huge -- size of your head or so -- and packed with all kinds of goodies. When they found out it was my birthday, my burrito came with a birthday candle, which I thought was a pretty cool gesture.
Our waiter was cheerful and quick without being professionally cheerful, and the staff as a whole appeared to be having a good time. I guess Saturday's are good tip nights. Bill came out about $15 a head, plus beers, which seemed to be reasonable -- I've paid more for a much less good meal.
Overall: Recommended. This place has replaced On the Border as our go-to Mexican; I just wish we lived closer. read more
