Being a native Tejana and growing up in the Mexican American culture, I consider myself an expert in Mexican and Tex-Mex food. Chuy's has the best Tex Mex food in the North Central part of Florida. They have homemade flour AND corn tortillas, and is the ONLY place of its kind that has them. I had the chicken enchiladas and they were delicious! Chips and salsa are on the house which is a definite plus. Chips are on the greasy side and salads contain lackluster veggies. Not too much in the way of tasty healthy options. Portions are large. 3,5/5 Atmosphere: The decor is loud, gaudy, and utterly splendid. Plenty of things on the wall/ ceiling to look at while you wait. Casual and fun 4/5 Parking: Butler Plaza is always a pain, but the lot is decent sized. 3,5/5 Service: One thing I can say is that Chuy's always has great service. All waiters I have had have been friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. It's unusual that ANY restaurant has such consistent solid service. Servers do get a bit busy, however so your drink might not be refilled immediately and the cheque may take a bit. 4,5/5 Overall: Fun, bright atmosphere with plenty of dishes that will please all. My friend and I had been wanting to check out this place for a while and sadly regret our decision to finally give it a try. The place had a very cool ambience, the decor was different and enjoyable, but aside from that we did not have an enjoyable dining experience. The service was poor to say the least. It was our first time there and we were looking for guidance as to what were some of the favorites for us to try, but found no help from our waiter. She seemed very much annoyed and bothered when we asked her for recommendations. The food was very underwhelming and not at all true to the authentic Tex-Méx style. The food was very very bland with smothered gunk "so called sauce" on it. We were not at all impressed. I know on the day to day things change but from this experience at Chuy's I don't think I'd give it a second chance. read more

Excellent food. If you go during happy hour you can have the free nacho bar that has ground beef, cheese dip, and bean dip. Only downside is that there is no draft beer, bottle beer only. You must get the creamy jalapeño dip for your chips. read more

I'm a huge fan of the original Chuy's locations in Austin, Texas, so I had to hit up the Chuy's in Gainesville. How does it live up to the name? It does pretty good, and it's almost there, but there is room for improvement. Always get the "Creamy Jalapeño" secret menu item with your chips, and they nail the recipe here. Excellent! Get the enchiladas with boom-boom sauce. This location appears to have the right recipe, but they're sourcing their jalapeños differently, and the boom-boom could be brought down a notch. It is supposed to be a middle-range spice dish. There is also something slightly off about the sauce for the flautas. The hosts have super service here, and they're incredibly friendly, but the servers that I've experienced so far are "just good", and they are on the slow side. The kitchen, however, is NOT on the slow side. They live up to the Chuy's name, and deliver fast with great quality. Fans of Chuy's will love seeing similar decor, excellent artistic environs, and the very same menu you already know and love. With a few tweaks, this location is going to be rocking it! read more

You never know what will grab my eye to entice me into a restaurant or hotel. It might be the result of exhaustive research online, or it can be something as simple as a drive-by. That's what happened when we passed Chuy's restaurant (near Butler Plaza) in Gainesville a couple of months ago. The building was painted pink with purple and orange trim and a tin roof. I wanted to go inside immediately. The restaurant had ample parking and the lot was full--a good sign. The next time we went to visit our son, I knew where I wanted to go for dinner. We went around 5 o'clock, and the hostess seated us immediately. The dining room was large, but it filled up quickly. The interior decor was just as eclectic as the outside. The tables and chairs were 50s retro, and reminded me of eating in my mom's kitchen when I was little. Booths lined the walls, which were covered with old license plates, and vintage photos, brochures and posters of movie stars and rock stars--especially featuring a lot of Mexican films and television shows. Fake palm trees (yes, fake, even though we live in Florida) added to the kitschy atmosphere. If you haven't figured it out by now, Chuy's is a Tex-Mex restaurant. The house-made chips were served warm. We pronounced them perfect--light with just enough salt on them. In fact, we ended up finishing off two baskets before our dinner arrived, along with their delicious fresh made red and green salsas, and the creamy jalapeño sauce that Renz and Chris ate with considerable enthusiasm. Everything at Chuy's is fresh, never frozen. Their tortillas are hand-rolled. They contract with farmers who grow their chile peppers. And they make ten signature homemade sauces from scratch. This is NOT fast food. I ordered Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken, which is a Chuy's original--a tender chicken breast breaded with Lay's potato chips, deep fried and smothered in Green Chile sauce and cheddar cheese. It was served with green chile rice and refried beans. I loved every bite but I had leftovers which became my son's lunch the next day. He didn't complain. Both guys ordered a combo plate and finished off every bite. To top it off, Chuy's lemonade and iced tea were perfect for a warm, Florida evening. The hospitality of their staff was outstanding, the waitress was attentive and fast, and the overall experience was 5-star memorable. Chuy's is now one of our fave places to go in Gainesville. By far the best Mexican restaurant in Gainesville. Their salsa is absolutely delicious and they have a free nacho bar week nights with free queso, beans, and taco meat. Their menu is wonderful and you can't get anything bad from the menu! It's a great place to go with a large group or just on a date. Went to Chuy's for lunch today and it was awesome. Our server, Moira, was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the entire menu. Ask for the "rainbow plate" - a sampling of all their warm sauces. It really helped us make up our minds when ordering. Also tried the cold jalapeno dip and loved it so much, we got an order to go. I love their tortilla chips - light and crispy, unlike some places where you think you might break a tooth! I had a Chile relleno/enchilada combo platter, my husband had the chuychanga. My son recommended this restaurant and so we went there tonight. Great drinks and appetizers and dinner. Everything was spot on. They were busy but the chips and drinks and the fresh salsa kept us happy while waiting for our dinner. We got there around 8 pm and had to wait maybe 10 minutes, so we waited at the bar with one of those light up gadgets. The bartender was friendly and the waitress was helpful. This will definitely be one of my favorite restaurants. read more

Ok, today I experienced an amazing authentic Mexican meal at Chuy's! The food was the best Mexican food I have ever had in the 23 years since I moved here from southern California! I've been to La Tienda, Las Margaritas, and La Fiesta... and Chuy's is the best!! The staff was absolutely the best! Our waitress (Kristina P.) was very attentive and knowledgeable. Although the restaurant was very busy when we arrived, and we were given an estimated waiting time of 40 minutes, we actually were seated in about 20 minutes. Chips, salsa, guacamole and drinks were promptly brought to our table, and our food was served approximately 20 minutes after ordering. The order was served hot and fresh with no mistakes, and the server, as well as other staff, checked with us several times during the meal to refill our drinks and bring extra warm chips. I am surprised that another reviewer complained of slow service and cold food; we experienced nothing like that. Maybe it was a bad day for either the reviewer or Chuy's, but if it happened, I'm sure it was an unusual exception. Please don't change a thing! I promise if you keep everything as is, your restaurant will succeed as the best in town! read more

Ok, so I just moved back to FL and you know the only thing I was going to miss in Austin, TX was Chuys...Holy Sh*t balls, they have one in G-Ville!! A dream come true!! Once a 4-star establishment, tonight was a tad disappointing, although the "liquid crack" (aka jalapeño dip) is still TO DIE 4. The acoustics are still horrible; a nearby table of loud, obnoxious women laughed so hard throughout their meal that it was difficult for us to hear each other speak. (This is not a first date kind of place.) The ground sirloin burrito, which has been very good in the past... was not. It was rather uninspiring in flavor. It had almost no cheese melted on top; almost no lettuce within; I couldn't taste the refried beans; & the side of tomato, etc. to put on top was sparse & aesthetically unappetizing. The rice was nothing special. But, for just under $13, I had enough for 2 meals...& the in-house nachos & liquid crack that accompany each meal are always pleasantly memorable. Service was quite good. The kitchen wasn't slow. And I'll probably always return a few times yearly when I am craving my favorite chip dip:) read more

We drove up from Ocala for this place. The chips, dip and service was phenomenal. And that's where it ended. The enchilada sauce tasted like it had been simmering since Monday. Want to leave Gainesville and take a trip to a big city but don't have the time or money? Just dine at Chuey's! You will feel you have left Gainesviille for a bigger city. This is not your typical Gainesville restaurant. There is nothing in this town like it! Food, service, and atmosphere is amazing! Salsa was so darn fresh it still had bubbles from just being whipped up in the food processor. No two bowls taste exactly the same but they are all good. Chips are light and thin making it less likely to fill up on them but still possible.... between the fresh salsa, creamy jalepeno dip, and the freshly made guacamole we ordered it kinda happened anyway. I love all the pictures on the walls and the palm trees in the middle of the room as well as the tile work and the ceiling. You just have fun sitting in there. In the bar area were pictures of local people's dogs as someone mentioned before you get a free appetizer for bringing a photo. I loved the Elvis tribute in there as well. We were seated next to the homemade tortilla making stand where you can watch 3 women making fresh tortillas from scratch. Let's talk food, I orderded a burrito the first visit and picked from their selection of sauces to top my burrito with. I believe there were about 6 different choices. I will try them all soon enough. The "big as yo' face burrito" had to go in a box because it was huge seriously! The beans taste really great and fresh.... you can actually see pinto beans in them unlike that runny baby food puree' some places serve. Today I ordered a signature dish called a chuychanga, it was stuffed with chicken, cheese, and cilantro. This dish was also a giant portion. They have a vegetarian enchalada I want to try next time because the assortment of vegetables looked really interesting. Some places just give you the mix they throw in with fajitas you could tell they had given it some thought. If your server is busy don't worry several friendly faces make sure you have drinks and chips restocked regularly. Our server was very busy and a man named Gabe made sure we didn't notice. He refilled our drinks and brought chips and boxes. There were 2 bus boys in our dining area and any unwanted plate or empty salsa bowl was removed promptly. I am somewhat picky and this place surpassed my expectations. Grab some friends and head to Chuey's they will all give you praise for being the one to introduce them to it. read more

We absolutely love this place. We eat here at least every other week if not once a week. The food is always fresh and the service is outstanding. Each dining area has its own theme. There is an area where a cook makes fresh tortillas where kids and adults can watch. My wife usually gets the taco salad or crispy tacos. My son usually gets a burger (which is really good) or the kids crispy tacos. I usually get the fajitas or chuychunga We've tried other items as well (which are good, but these tend to be our favorites). As far as appetizers, my wife and son love the creamy jalapeno but personally I love the queso. We've tried almost every Mexican restaurant here and none of them come close to Chuy's. If you are a huge fan of Mexican food then this is your place. read more

First time at this new chain of mexican restaurants. I was greeted with an amazing basket of chips (thin, warm and crisp) and some amazing salsa. I requested a second bowl of "hot salsa" and did not taste much difference... but it was still good! I had a combo platter that included a chalupa (tostada?) and a chicken enchilada. The chicken chalupa and enchilada were fabulous with large sides of beans, rice and salad. A to-go box is necessary. I will definitely return to this restaurant. read more

The restaurant is really big and colorful. I had been craving hungover chips and salsa and my go to Mexican place was closed so we decided to try Chuy's. Every employee there was super friendly and quick to please. When the waitress found out it was our first time, she quickly brought out a sample of all sauces/salsas the restaurant had (about 12). Now, while I did not like any of them, it was nice to get a sampling of them to see what I would get with my order. Most of them tasted like soup and none were particularly spicy. The chips were nice and warm, but the table salsa was watery and bland. I think most of it dripped on the table rather than staying on the chip. I ordered a combo plate with refried beans and plain rice while my husband had a chimichanga with the traditional pinto beans and green chili rice. My food was relatively tasty, but the beef in the taco and the chicken in the chalupa were under seasoned. I was also disappointed that no salsa came with my meal because both the taco and chalupa were missing some moisture. We asked the waitress for hot sauce, but were told they only had tabasco or their green chili sauce. My husband enjoyed his meal as well, but we found my "plain rice" had a lot more flavor and was spicier than the green chili rice. We saved no room for dessert. I can not necessarily say that I would be back... but my experience was just okay. read more

Stopped in on a lark, not expecting anything beyond the usual Tex Mex. My bride and I were pleasantly surprised...the food and service were both great. At first I had some doubts as to whether this place would do good in our town given the recent proliferation of Mexican and SouthWest-Mex style restaurants (there's now 6 such restaurants in about 2-mile radius). Now that I've eaten there with my family, I can say they've hit a home run. The ambiance, music and decor are fantastic: they draw you into the experience they are selling. The staff was very attentive and friendly. The salsa that comes with the complimentary chips and salsa is ridiculously good -- and ask them about the creamy dip which is amazing as well. The menu is filled with good options and adequately priced. The food was served fairly fast -- specially considering most of it it's made fresh, in the premise. I ordered one of the dishes from the "meal" menu. Mine included a beef taco, 2 flautas, 2 quesadillas, rice and beans plus two luscious pieces of their home made corn tortilla smothered in a rather savory queso sauce. The portions are rather gratuitous and I would be surprised if you don't leave with a to-go box with 1/2 of your meal. Everything in my plate was absolutely delectable: crunchy flautas with delicious oven-roasted chicken, the beef taco was fantastic and the quesadilla was outstanding. We ordered an order of Sopapillas for desert and were not disappointed. They were made hot and soft with a hint of powdered sugar on top. In all, I have to say that in the 14 years I've lived in this town, Chuy's has to be one of the best, if not the best restaurant-food experiences I've had. Absolutely recommend it. read more

Well, where do I start? First off, they do not serve draft beer. Mexican food with no draft beer? There should be a law against this. Our waiter gave us a bullshit excuse about wanting to serve the freshest of products, so they only serve bottled beer since the lines of a draft system can get dirty. I can drink bottled beer at home. Strike One. Our waiter brought us a complimentary jalapeno dip, most likely to make up for the lack of draft beer. It was ranch dressing with some spicy pepper bits thrown in for spice. Yuck! If I wanted to eat ranch dressing on chips, once again, I could have stayed home. When our meals came to the table, after a long wait for how empty the place was, it was less than thrilling. I had the sour cream tomatillo sauce on chicken enchiladas. The sauce was good, but the food was just slightly warm. The rice was dry, and the beans were just not up to par. It tasted like the corporate crap that you would get at any other run-of-the-mill chain restaurant. Strike Two. Lastly, the experience just plain sucked. One of the employees decided it was a good idea to try and exit the building through one of the fire doors. The fire alarm went off for around five minutes before anyone there could figure out how to make it stop. I'm fairly certain that I have permanent hearing damage. Strike Three. If decor and a glass cage with a tortilla making slave are what you are looking for in a dining experience, then Chuy's is your spot. If you want good food, go somewhere else. The only thing passable during the whole experience was the service. That poor bastard had to overcome lack of draft beer, crappy food, and the horrible sound of the fire alarm. He was a superstar. Bottom line, skip it and go to Las Margaritas instead. This place blows. read more

This restaurant is extraordinarily average. The sauces are all canned so do not ask for them to hold back an ingredient or to adjust how the food is prepared. The restaurant staff rushes you through the entire meal offering dessert half way through the meal and closing out the check as quick as possible. Trying to finish our drinks after dinner we received icy cold stares from the hostess and manager. The food is very basic and reminded me of Taco Bell. They do offer free chips, salsa and queso in their bar area which in a college town can't possible last long. With the many tasty and inexpensive Mexican offerings in Gainesville, Chuy's would be my last choice for dinner. read more
