Illysa S. and I decided to go there Sunday night after the Skins/Titans game. We saw that there was a wait and we added our names to the list. What a great "problem" for a new restaurant to have! We were told it would be about 15 minutes, it ended up being somewhere around 20 minutes, but that absolutely wasn't an issue, it's a guesstimate, right? First observation, the waiting area is super busy and chaotic. Walking through this area that houses the host station is also the way to the bar and restrooms. There was a consistent string of servers trying to squeeze through here, which caused a lot of bumping into random people. While waiting, I thought I would make use of my idle time and headed to the restroom. Honestly, that irritated me more than I was prepared to deal with. The walking path between the bar and the tables was incredibly tight, and I was knocked into by bus boys and diners alike.
When our pager went off, we were shown to our booth. Once we got there, the hostess quickly placed our menus down and went back to her stand. I am simply not exaggerating when I tell you there was four inches between the table and the booths seat. We couldn't sit down, it was so tight, that I actually had issues placing my purse on the seat because the table was so close. I am sorry, I am not paying to eat some place where I can't sit down. During our entire conversation, standing right night to us was the owner/manager - who ignored the whole thing. Literally, he was leaning against the pole that held our booth up. We stood there, unaddressed, until our server came to take our drink order. I asked him if there was a more appropriate place we could be seated, he happily led us to a new table. It was only then, that the owner/manager said "oh yes, that booth is extremely small and we have issues with it all the time." Interesting, thanks for attempting to seat us there.
We were lead to another section of the restaurant that had small two top tables surrounding the perimeter of the room and the middle filled with round tables, and fake palm trees. We were immediately greeted by our new server whom you could tell was an enthusiastic member of the team. He suggested we try the "frozen blood orange margarita". The margarita was very good, it was sweet but not overly saccharine, and it had the unmistaken tartness of blood orange, it was overall a great choice.
With our chips... I ordered the white sauce (not sure what it's called). I don't know what that stuff it, but it's like crack, the version here has a kick to it as well... I could put that stuff on everything.
In addition to the crack sauce, our server suggested the "Queso Compuesto" which is queso topped with ground beef, Pico and guacamole. You mix it all together when it arrives and you get a little bite of all the yummy flavors with each chip... we also ordered the mixed fajitas, for two.
A food runner brought out our queso literally a minute after we placed the order, which at first I thought was amazing, for as busy as they were, this was darn near impossible... HOWEVER, literally 2 minutes after our dip arrived, so did our fajitas. Our server actually walked past our table and was absolutely stunned to see our food there. Watching the sizzle of our fajitas die out as we attempted to shovel our queso in our mouths left dinner a little anti - climatic.
The fajitas were okay. The steak was flavorless, the chicken, amazingly tender and juicy... peppers and onions - virtually nonexistent. The rice was phenomenal, the beans - blah. While I really appreciate that the tortillas were homemade, they are also terribly dry and taste exactly like what you think flour and water would taste like, so dry in fact that with each fajita we folded, the tortilla just cracked open and spilled the contents all over our plates.
The service... excellent.
The food... not terrible, would certainly like to go back and shoot for the experience I had with their catered event.
The atmosphere... little to be desired. It is entirely too loud. The tables are too close together, so much so that it is impossible not to hear (and touch) everyone around you. I had servers carrying trays literally over top of my head because there isn't enough of a walk way for them to get from point A, to point B. People bumping into each other left and right, servers that were squeezing around corners to get to the guests seated in tables in the very back. This place was a little too much in the sensory overload department. When I go out to dine, I don't want a table of strangers almost in my lap and I certainly don't want that stranger's try of food hovering over my head.
I know this place is new and is going to have some expected growing pains, hence the 3 stars. (Moved up from 2.5 stars because of the amazing white sauce, AND because of our rock star server). Both Illysa and I agreed we should wait a while, give them another shot, and adjust our stars accordingly. read more
