The atmos was always great - took a while to get going, often with small groups of people getting up and dancing self consciously to one individual track from their favourite band, then sitting down again (check me out - I love 'Faster' by Manic Street Preachers, and can sing along to all the words...) but when you got into the prime time of the evening the DJ's would bring out the big tunes for that individual club night and it would go off. The usual classics - 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', 'Jump Around', 'Intergalactic' would have seas of revellers launching themselves all over the place in a beer fuelled frenzy. The dark dingy decor gave the place the feel of an underground den - a crypt even - where the children of the night hid from the high street herds to hear the hallowed music of the past, present and near future at deafening volumes. But God have mercy on the DJ who played Stone Roses 'I am the Resurrection' and cut it off before the solo! A fantastic line up of club nights - especially Wednesday nights Up The Junction - a spot on 60's night, playing Motown, Northern Soul and British beat groups among others, to generally sparse but well tailored crowds of Leicester's Ace Faces. A quick peek at their website shows its still going strong. For fans of alternative music who feel that a night out should be about a collective experience of people coming together for the music they love and share, rather than a trip to the meat market to cop off with someone who is drunk enough not to care. People who prefer Supergrass to Superclubs, and go for The Jam rather than Cream. Disclaimer - as I said I haven't been since 2001. It may now be shite.

The food and drink prices are also extortionate, especially when you consider the venue is 'partnered' with the cheap and cheerful Walkabout downstairs. Like any self respecting chain venue, once you're in Jongleurs you could pretty much be anywhere in the country, it looks the same except for the acts aren't usually that great. No real big names to speak of that I've noticed on the bill in the last couple of months. Save your money and go somewhere good instead. Preferably in another city if its comedy you're after.

Have to say, though, it is worth filling in your card to get the free bubbly - I won it once, which was a nice addition to an otherwise underwhelming night.

Takes so long to get a drink you could sneak in at age 12 and be able to present valid ID by the time you got served. Bouncers treat you like you just punched their mum. The venue is a bit grotty but that suits the kind of atmosphere and nights they have. They are generally rock nights but it could be worth checking before you visit as some nights are a bit unusual and might not be to your taste. Not much choice on the drink front, but it's not too expensive so I'm satisfied.

Streetlife in Leicester is another gay friendly club open which did open on Wednesdays and…read moreSaturdays which a selection of different rooms of dance and cheese music. The General cost to get in was five pounds (but if you a smoker BEWARE they also once your in charge you a fiver for a smokers pass!) As far as I know and have been informed Streetlife is no longer open for business I have no idea if it's being refurbished or has just closed it big pink doors for good. Check out Quebec instead if your looking for a gay friendly club in Leicester.
