Pogue Mahones - From website

Pogue Mahones

For being such a large, bustling city, Liverpool has surprisingly little to do after nighttime…read morehits. Unless it involves drinking, of course. Tired of wasting nights at our regular hangouts, BF and I decided to try somewhere new. He'd been to Pogue Mahone's many times before, but I hadn't. Most of my pub experiences in Liverpool at that point had been either been in hole in the walls or in trendy, studenty places. None of them had really impressed me. Pogue offered a really nice alternative. Warm from the blazing fire, we ordered Guinness and sat down in the big arm chairs around the fireplace. The pub had an old-timey, homey feel to it- exactly what you picture when you imagine an Irish pub. I like the decor, especially the dark wood and scattered bookshelves- and I really want to steal their idea of using Jameson bottles for candle sticks. It's not a big, thumping night spot but it has a fun energy that is perfect for the nights when you want to drink (possibly heavily) without getting into a fight. Someone mentioned once that Pogue Mahone has live, traditional music on some nights, but I haven't caught that yet. Either way, I am really tempted to make this my regular watering hole, especially since they have quiz and curry nights on Monday, the true way to my heart.

There's a heck of a Scouse/Irish connection, and nowhere is that clearer than in Liverpool itself…read more My entire family's from the Mersey and I know for a fact that somewhere along the line our clan goes back to the green, green grass of Ireland. So Pogue Mahone fits right in on Seel Street. It's an Irish bar, and the live music is often traditional, with the atmosphere very cosy. This is exemplified by the wooden walls, giving it the feel of a warm cabin. Irish bars should be like Mulligans in Manchester as opposed to your Waxy O' Connor chain - you want to feel transported to a different realm, heck, a different time even. And stepping into Pogue from the hectic bustle of Seel Street really feels calming and soothing. The bar is decorated by Irish football shirts, and the crackling coal fire in the main bar is a definite draw in the winter months. The owners and staff are Irish born and bred which adds to the authenticity of the place, and occasionally you'll find proper stew on the stove, free fry-ups for early punters and of course the quintessential Irish bands.

But we stood at the bar with a drink and admired the beautiful husky that was visiting the pub and after 20minutes were seated. The food was absolutely delicious and cannot be faulted in any way. The only reason why I've not given 5 stars is because I was really looking forward to a lamb shank and unfortunately they had sold out and hadn't told me when I sat down. The service was very pleasant and we were even offered extra gravy half way through our meal which I think is a great touch. Great pub, not cheap but definitely worth every penny.

A good variety of outdoor seating, both at the front of the pub and in prime location next to the canal, perfect for a summer's evening! Inside the pub is modern and spacious, with pictures adorning the walls from Willington in bygone times. We visited on a Bank Holiday and the Dragon was very busy with diners and drinkers alike, sheltering from the incessant rain! Menu wise, a good variety of dishes, both traditional and more modern. As it was so busy on the evening we visited, we just went straight for the mains. We went for the 'Dragon burger' and the Moroccan Tagine; the burger was tasty enough, with a pleasant accompanying side salad and great chips. The tagine was the pick of the dishes though, full of flavour and a sizeable portion, with cous cous, but could have done with a portion of veg, but that was an extra. Other dishes included steaks, fish and chips, homemade pies etc. A good meal, and we will definitely give the starters and desserts a try on another visit.

Oy! D&P is hands…read moredown the best irish pub in all of yorkshire. If you really want to hear some folk music on old timey instruments, have a smoke, drink a pint of guiness then listen up wanker, this place is spot on. I have never eaten anything in here, except for shots of jamison, the staff and owner of this place always remembers me even though as much as 2 years will pass in between visits. Long live Old English Pubs.... Hear ye, hear ye.... Cheers!

Looking for an Irish bar to go to in Sheffield? Well, Scrap Scruffy Murphy's, offload O'Neills,…read moredrink in the Dog & Partridge. This isn't the best-lit pub, and it's made up of several rooms rather than an open plan, so at first it can seem a bit disheartening. Ignore this though, as the quirky layout is a strength rather than a weakness this is a pub that provides plenty of nooks & crannies for a good blather and doesn't try to maximise seating by knocking the walls in. The back room is where the music is played, and there's always a good audience whether it be a local rock band or a traditional Irish session. There's also the well-decorated lounge which is stocked with token Guinness paraphernalia or my favourite spot the room behind the bar complete with cubby hole. From here you can shout your order through and beat the queues. Feel like a local celebrity! And there's plenty to order: one of Sheffield's best ranges of Irish and Scottish whiskey/whisky is here as well as knowledgeable staff who know what they're serving. A smoky, intimate place that is now missing the smoke, the Dog should be sought if you like a comfy seat, warming malt and a place to watch some real characters.
