The Almanack is in Leicester's swanky new bit of town, High Cross and, understandably on a Saturday night, it was heaving when we went. Although I don't live in Leicester any more, I'm told my mates that the Almanack is one of Leicester's top eateries.
At first, I wasn't overly impressed. It's all a bit bright and soul-less and the decor's a bit unimaginative. Essentially it's a grill and the carnivores in our group (all but one) all ordered steak. Before that, though, we had starters - a vegetarian tapas board (hummus, dips etc.) which was fine. Then it was on to the meat! Bar one, the steaks were cooked perfectly and the meat was very flavoursome.
I was stuffed and didn't have a pudding, but they didn't look all that special if I'm honest, but my Irish Coffee was just perfect (OK, not the hardest thing to do, but plenty of places stuff it up).
So, I'm a bit undecided star rating wise. Some people (vegetarians and pudding lovers especially) would only give it two or three stars. But I reckon, based on the fact that 6/7 steak were perfect, it's got to be a four for me. read more
