My 3-pc combo at Church's Texas Chicken, with Jalapeno Bombers and a Honey-Butter Biscuit.
Christian L.

I saw this place getting ready to open, and being a fried chicken junkie, I was obviously stoked to finally get a chance to try it out. I ordered a 3 piece combo, which came with a breast, 2 drumsticks, a side (I chose the Jalapeno Bombers), a Honey-Butter Biscuit, and a drink for $9.99 ($11.29 after tax). I waited a few minutes for my order, and had planned on taking it home to eat it, but once I got in the car, I changed my mind. I wanted to eat it while it was still hot, and at its freshest. When the manager (maybe the owner) gave me my order, he said that there was only two pieces of chicken in the box, but he'd put my third piece in a separate bag with the rest of my food. I opened the box, and was surprised to see three pieces, so he accidentally gave me an extra piece (SCORE!). I started off with the Honey-Butter Biscuit, and it was good, but maybe not quite as good as I had heard. The outside was crunchy, and the inside was warm and soft. The mild honey flavour is pleasing, and goes nicely with the taste and texture of the biscuit. You've all heard the saying, "Everything is bigger in Texas," and it holds true for this chicken. There was a breast and two drumsticks in the box, and they were noticeably bigger pieces than any other fried chicken restaurants I've been to. I started with the breast, and it was delicious. The skin was super-crunchy, and the meat was hot, tender and juicy. The skin isn't as heavily seasoned as most other places, and the flavour was more subtle, but very enjoyable nonetheless. There was however, quite a bit of grease dripping down my fingers. I used three napkins while eating that first piece of chicken. Strangely though, when I ate the two drumsticks, then my bonus piece of chicken (another breast piece), there was virtually none. I'm treating that first piece as an anomaly, as the last three were not greasy at all. After the chicken, I moved on to the Jalapeno Bombers. They're smaller than a jalapeno popper, so it must just be slices of jalapeno, as opposed to whole, hollowed out peppers. Also, while poppers traditionally use a cream cheese-type of filling, these appear to be more of a Velveeta sort of cheese inside the crunchy outer breading. I was happy to feel the appropriate amount of heat from the jalapeno, and that the spice level wasn't dialed down (McDonald's came out with a Jalapeno McChicken last year that was an absolute joke, and their Habanero McChicken and Ghost Pepper McChicken were a letdown, too). While the Bombers could've been hotter temperature-wise, the reality is that by the time I made my way through the biscuit and four pieces of chicken, there was no way they could still be piping hot. Overall, I really enjoyed my first meal at Church's, and I'm looking forward to taking my kids here on our next "Boys' Night" (my wife hates fried chicken). Great food and good value means that I'll definitely be back!

Refried Old Chicken

I ordered an 8pc meal jalapeño poppers , and a 4 pack of 22 ounce pops last night 11:30pm. Unfortunately I received refried old chicken, refried poppers and 4 cans of pop instead. The chicken gave me and my daughter food poisoning and we have been sicker than a dog all night and day. I tried calling the restaurant before the order was finished being "prepared" for plates but all night the line was busy /left off the hook. The jalapeño poppers were hallow in the inside with only remnants of jalapeños. I have plenty of pictures proving everything as well. I ordered this meal through doordash for the first time and was highly disappointed/irritated trying to speak to someone in charge there as well. Which was only the same email was sent to me multiple times stated the same thing , to send in hospital bills and information. Even giving proof that Churchs did not provide me me with the correct items I paid for , doordash was unwilling to refund. You get nowhere when speaking to their customer service. So today inbetween bathroom breaks I called the store and spoke to "Nancy" who claimed to be a manager. Instead of apologizing and offering me anything she said call doordash and hung up the phone when I asked to have the shift manager call me. She did not even ask for my information as to where to call or my name. A business should stand behind their product and do the right thing when it comes to their customers. Unfortunately Church's Texas Chicken failed us. I will not order on doordash OR from Church's ever again even if my life depended on it and to sum the story up I definitely disputed this charge with my bank. be careful whom you spend your hard earned money with.

Soggy mess

Terrible service. My order was skipped over three times even though I reminded the staff twice. Got a weak excuse about no spicy chicken available even though I watched the customers behind me receive spicy chicken orders. No offer of any compensation. When I got my take out order home, the cole slaw container was improperly closed and had leaked dressing all over the biscuits The food was okay but I will not return

Too greasy, too heavy, too salty. Not at all healthy, nor tasty. I felt sick after eating the meal I ordered and purchased.

On Sunday, I headed to Whitby to meet up with friends at BarDown Gastropub. This eatery is located…read moreat Iroquois Park Complex, but runs independently from the sports complex. I like that you don't have to go through the sports complex to get to this restaurant. I parked in the parking lot in front of this eatery. There are steps to go up to get to the restaurant. It's also wheelchair-accessible with a ramp. Bar down is a hockey term. When a hockey player shoots the puck and it hits the bottom of the crossbar first, followed by going straight into the net, it's bar down. Some folks also call it bar south. We were a group of four. It was a thrill for me to get to check out the kitchen. Jody and Chris were kind to give us a tour and were delightful hosts. We also got to meet the chef, John Charles, who is the mastermind behind the dishes. We ordered way too much food. We wanted to sample lots of it. We did! Our order consisted of these items: - BarDown smash burger with fries - Truly Canadian Detroit-style pizza - Jerk chicken penne - Buttermilk chicken tenders - Cajun roasted red pepper and garlic parm wings, with fries - Ahi tuna poke - BarDown nachos - Street fish tacos I got multiple refills on Diet Pepsi. Each glass of it was crisp and delightful. This restaurant is on City of Whitby property. The city has a contract with Pepsi, so it's Pepsi products here. It was nice seeing customers watching the Blue Jays spring training. This eatery houses the largest screen in the city. Wow! The BarDown smash burger was excellent. It has two beef patties that were juicy with crispy edges. The bun was yummy and held everything together, including the pickles. It was excellent! The truly Canadian Detroit-style pizza has an odd name, but it is Canadian. It had mushrooms, which made me happy. It also had pepperoni, bacon, and peppers, with a side of ranch. I liked the crispy edges and yummy toppings. The herbed tomato sauce was awesome! If you like a spicy kick, get the jerk chicken penne. The penne was al dente. The jerk chicken was tender. The heat kicks in slowly after your first bite and builds. The flavours were perfect. So good! This place is known for its buttermilk chicken tenders. I was in heaven enjoying one. It was juicy and had the best crunch. I dipped it in the plum sauce. Yum! I also loved the coleslaw that accompanied the tenders. It was crunchy and delicious. The fries were excellent. We got generous portions. I loved them. The ridges were perfect to get more ketchup or whatever condiment you like. I love wings. This eatery makes fabulous wings. Each one was huge. Both the cajun roasted red pepper and garlic parm wings were meaty and yummy. I loved the veggies, which made me feel like I was eating something healthy-ish. My favourite item was the ahi tuna poke. Think nachos, but with wonton crisps. The tuna was crusted in white and black sesame. It had avocado, pico, pineapple salsa, pickled chili, ginger soy, sriracha aioli, and cilantro crema. Fabulous! It was incredible. I am still dreaming about it. You get a generous portion of BarDown nachos. The spicy beef chili was amazing with the melted cheese, pico, and nachos chips. The street tacos were so bright and scrumptious. We got beer-battered fish, with shredded lettuce, pineapple salsa, slaw, and cilantro lime crema. The fish was flaky and yummy. This place makes such a great pineapple salsa. I loved how light and bright these tacos were. It's a family-friendly establishment. I saw a group of young hockey boys with their parents eating at a long table after their game. The hockey arena has a concession stand that sells your usual hot dogs, chips, pop, pizza, and more. It runs independently from this eatery. I used the washroom a couple of times during the three hours that were were here. The women's washroom was exceptionally clean. No issues. This eatery is on Skip the Dishes. I had a wonderful experience having lunch with friends. The food is excellent. I'd return in a heartbeat. (74)

Food was tasty, I quite enjoyed my OG wings. They were freshly fried, very piping hot and tasty, and huge! It came with a slice of bread, dipping sauce, and some pickles. I got the combo which came with fries and a drink. They have a good selection of soft drinks, and a slushy machine. I got it mild and it was perfect amount of spice for me. They were very kind to make the chicken bites plain for my young daughter who cannot handle the heat yet. It did seem slightly overdone but it was a busy day. My husband got the Hot Honey Sandwich, and he said it was tasty. We got regular and Cajun waffle fries. The Cajun one was more flavourful, but we thought they were both a smidge too salty. Very happy a new chicken spot opened up here, will definitely be back to try their chicken pieces!

OG Sando was a nice crispy chicken with option for diff level of spices for the dry rub and creamy coleslaw. Just bare in mind the "Chica's sauce" is a ranch sauce. If you're looking for spice, make sure to go stronger on the dry rub. You can also choose to upgrade to brioche bun but I kept the toast and option to add $6 for a combo. One friend tried the Buffalo sandwich with combo and she enjoyed it. She did say she liked the waffle fries as they were crispy but smidge over seasoned. Inside the store there's a few bar stools and staff were very nice and friendly! Always willing to answer questions and offer recommendations. Parking wise there's few spots out front but lot of street parking as well. Overall, def check it out!
