I do appreciate it being plainly shown on the receipt so it's up to the customer to decide next time opposed to just blindly up-charging the customer, like other places. Parking is hit or miss in the area, so I intentionally went not long after opening hours. The restaurant was completely empty when I arrived. I thought that would mean no long waits for food. I was wrong. Also, the service wasn't the most pleasant for placing a takeout order. The gentleman behind the counter seemed frustrated and hesitant to offer a menu, as if I was supposed to know everything they offer despite being a first time customer. I had the grilled chicken rasta pasta. Almost an hour wait! It was a decent portion, but overly salted. I probably would not get that again. Perhaps I'll try something else on the menu another time, but I am not in a hurry.

We arrived at 6:35 p.m. and chose to sit on the Terrazza so we could enjoy the live band. Unfortunately, the service was incredibly slow from the start. It took about 15 minutes before our waitress came to take our drink order, and another 15 minutes before our drinks arrived. We were enjoying the music, so we didn't mind waiting at first. We understood that restaurants get busy and were happy to be patient. Our order wasn't anything complicated. We ordered a salad and a sandwich, which made the wait even more surprising. We had tickets to an 8:15 movie, so around 7:30 we started getting concerned that our food still hadn't arrived. Even then, we didn't complain. At 8:00 p.m., we simply flagged down our waitress, explained that we had to leave, and politely asked her to cancel the remainder of our order. She apologized, took my credit card, and said she would take care of it. While we were waiting, we saw at least two other tables cancel their orders and ask for their checks after experiencing similar delays. About an hour and a half after we had been seated, our food finally arrived, even though we had already canceled it. We told the servers we no longer wanted it. By then, another 15 minutes had passed since we had given the waitress our credit card, yet we still hadn't received our check. We finally walked over to the bar to ask what was going on. That's when we learned our waitress had been holding onto our check so she could add the food to it. We explained, again, that we had canceled the order before it was ever served and would not be paying for meals we never received. Instead of understanding why we were frustrated after waiting over 90 minutes, she responded with attitude, which was honestly the most disappointing part of the evening. The manager overheard the conversation, apologized for the delay, but that was the extent of it. No offer to comp our drinks or appetizer, no attempt to make up for the experience, and no acknowledgment that we had spent over an hour and a half at the restaurant and left without the meal we came for. During that entire time, we received one round of drinks and an appetizer. No one offered another round of drinks, or provided any meaningful updates about our food. I understand that restaurants have difficult nights, and if the only issue had been a long wait, I probably wouldn't be writing this review. What made this experience so disappointing was how it was handled. We were patient from the moment we sat down, and simply asked to cancel our order because we had another commitment. After all of that, being met with attitude for refusing to pay for food that arrived only after we had canceled it, and seeing no real effort from the restaurant to make things right left us feeling like our experience simply didn't matter. We were genuinely excited to find a new local restaurant after moving to South Orange. Instead, our first visit was so disappointing that it will also be our last.

There is almost always music playing and I really appreciate them taking orders over the phone and online. They also have this cool complimentary option of personalizing your cup with a black & white photo of you if you ask. I've also had the turmeric latte and the avocado toast which are worth getting again. The toast was fresh and flavorful. They have an enclosed booth that looks like it seats 4. Great for a little open privacy. The couches are quite comfortable as well. They have punch cards which is good, but I'm terrible with remembering so it would be great if they went digital with rewards. Maybe 1 point per visit or 1 point per $1 with tiered rewards. It's the only coffee shop I go to in the area that doesn't have digital rewards. Would love to see more vegan options on the menu, maybe a cinnamon roll lol. Con is they open late for a cafe. It's cozy, small, has warm décor, friendly staff, just enough seating, and the music overhead was chef's kiss. And bonus: it's a Black-owned business, which I will always support. We ordered a small iced coffee with oat milk and sugar, an iced chai latte, the grilled cheese with arugula, and the egg platter. Everything was pretty good -- I wasn't blown away, but it was solid and seasoned well. I really wanted to try the French toast because I've heard so many good things, but they told me it would be a 30-minute wait. Our food ended up taking about 20 minutes anyway, so honestly, I probably should've just held on and waited for it. Next time! Prices are what you'd expect for a coffee shop in the suburbs of West Orange. We lucked out with a parking spot right in front, but parking in that area can definitely be tricky. They also sell Harper's Café merch -- t-shirts, sweatshirts, and quarter zips. I'm definitely going back to try the French toast and the pancakes because I saw several people ordering them, so they must be worth it. This is a great place to hang out, read a book, get some work done, chat with a friend, or vibe solo. Harper's Café gives you all the good feels, and I'll absolutely be returning. One note: the menu is limited, and not everything you see online may be available that day -- just something to keep in mind.

It was very off-putting and unpleasant to taste. Our server was kind enough to bring us a replacement order, which was better, but there was still some sand present. Our mocktails were also not tasty. We also ordered the fried calamari and shrimp appetizer. The calamari tasted stale and lacked freshness. The peppers helped add some flavor, but it still wasn't enjoyable. The shrimp was probably my favorite item of the entire meal. For our entrees, we ordered the skirt steak with fries. My husband's fries were stale, while mine were decent. I wasn't impressed with the steak, as it lacked flavor, and the chimichurri sauce tasted odd. The corn succotash, however, was quite good. By the end of the meal, we didn't even feel like trying dessert. Overall, the food quality and freshness need significant improvement. Although the service was excellent, unfortunately, we will not be returning.

The Jerk Chicken is good; the flavor of the seasoning is very present on the skin of the meat, though the order doesn't come with sauce on the side (like I request over the phone) in the bag. The inner portion of the meat is tender though not as juicy as the bone, marrow (which is full plenty with a very very subtle flavor), or skin (which is of a drier spice variety). So, I think having the sauce might add way more to the flavor dynamics of the meatier portion of the meal than its other parts. The Beef Patty is decent; the crust carries a flavor of a brothy-vegetable seasoning flavoring (which may be coming away from the meat) well though the Beef Patty (after the Jerk Chicken) offers a subtle flavor and seems more crust than patty. The establishment has seating for about two and a bit of standing room. The eatery accepts different forms of payment.

The pork slices were big although I wouldn't say they are as good as those found in very traditional and higher end ramen places in NYC.
