I was really looking forward to trying Chulita, but unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The restaurant has a trendy, hipster vibe, but it feels like they've lost the essence of traditional Mexican food. The menu comes across as overly Americanized and "fusion-heavy," which might appeal to some, but not if you're expecting authentic flavors. I ordered chilaquiles, and the dish was incorrect from the start. It came out without the steak I had ordered--just basic chilaquiles. On top of that, the food was cold, as if sauce had simply been poured over chips with sour cream added afterward. When I brought it to their attention, they took the plate back and returned it with a piece of steak placed on top--but it was clearly the same cold dish. I sent it back again, and while they brought out a "new" plate, it still had the same steak from the previous order, and once again, the chilaquiles were cold. Overall, the service and food quality were very disappointing. If you're looking for traditional Mexican cuisine, this is not the place. It leans heavily toward a hip, Americanized interpretation that loses the authenticity of the dishes. read more

I had been wanting to try Chulita for a while, so when my mom and I were looking for a late Saturday night bite, it finally felt like the right time. The place isn't very big. It's more of an intimate, cozy setting. We sat in the bar area and the vibe was relaxed and lively. The Coliflor Fundido was the star of the night. Honestly some of the best fundido I've had. It was rich and creamy without being greasy, and we both kept going back for another bite. The Esquites was okay. Not bad, just not something I'd rush back for like the fundido. Ordered takeout here and after stepping into the restaurant, I NEED to eat at the restaurant. It is such a cute vibey spot, and so good for a date. I ordered some tacos, and my favorites were the chicken and the beef cheek. The fish was good too, but lacking in flavor and the protein portion is definitely smaller. The steak taco unfortunately was too gamey for me. The esquitas is also so good, it's super smoky and citrusy. La chulita is a restaurant that needs more attention because it definitely is a gem! It's located in mid town Los Angeles. The parking is kind of difficult to be honest you're going to have to park in the residential area to park if you can't find parking on the street. The ambiance is a Mexican retro style restaurant that serves and specializes in mezcal. They have other drinks which is cool but I took my mother here and we both enjoyed it . We had a great dining experience at Chulita. Located in the West Adams neighborhood, situated on a corner lot. The higher-end restaurant appeal was there. The ambiance very much resembled the culture of the food. Customer service was also amazing. Our server was so on top of it, and made sure everything was to our liking. The natural colors and furniture of the restaurant gives you a relaxing feel. The restaurant has seating inside as well seating inside. We ordered from the entradas menu. We enjoyed the guacamole with picot de gallo. I have the quesadillas which are made with heirloom corn tortillas, queso oaxaca, pipian de calabash. The brunch menu is extensive. I always like it when a place does something different. Went to this place to try one of their breakfast burritos, and not only was it good, it was different from others I've had, and in interesting ways. It's called the Burrito De Desayno, and is described on the menu as being "Hash Brown, Scrambled Eggs, Ayocote Beans, Queso Oaxaca, Vegan Charred Onion Aioli [and your] Choice of Vegan Chorizo or Chicken Apple Sausage." It's the Queso Oaxaca and that really make this one. I've never had a burrito -- breakfast or otherwise -- that was so gooey with cheese. It might also explain why it was so filling. Glad I didn't order a side. Along with the burrito, I also had an iced latte, and while it was good, it was also a little on the small side. Though only a little. As for the place itself, it was clean and very light and sunny, lots of windows. The place was empty when I went (11AM on a Wednesday), so there was only one person working the front, but he was friendly and attentive. The food also came out in a timely manner. As for parking, I found a spot right on the side street, though there were also spots on the street itself. But one note: there's a school next door, and when I went, it was recess, so the air was filled with the sound of kids playing. Or screaming bloody murder. It was hard to tell. Personally, I couldn't care less -- especially since the restaurant was playing some sweet soul music, and at a reasonable volume -- but if the sounds of kids playing gets on your nerves, plan accordingly. read more

Additionally, we were offered the check before we had the opportunity to order coffee, which made the experience feel a bit rushed. The menus were also taken away and not left on the table, which made it harder to continue ordering at our own pace. The food itself was great, but improving attentiveness and allowing guests to enjoy their meal without feeling rushed would make a big difference. Chulita has an impressive number of vegan and vegetarian options, and has made it quite simple to order healthy and delicious choices! I ordered one hanger steak taco with the homemade flour tortillas, the arroz verde, and the black beans. The waiter brought me the red and green salsa (spicy), and both were tasty. I prefer the green salsa. The one taco and the two sides were enough for me, though I wanted to order an additional taco to try out a different protein. I had leftovers from my meal! The waiter was attentive, answered questions, and made excellent suggestions. The restaurant space is a PERFECT venue for an event: campaign function, large baby shower, 30-40-50-60-70th birthday party, etc. I parked on the street and actually did not pay attention to whether the restaurant has its own parking. If it doesn't, that might be the only negative. Actually, no, just Uber/Lyft/taxi there so you can leave your car keys at home and enjoy one (or more) of the amazing drinks that Chulita serves made with mezcal or tequila. Originally stopped in at Chulita for a couple of birthday drinks for my mom. Walking in feels like stepping into an oasis -- the stunning interior design instantly transports you away from the loud traffic outside. We sat at the bar and enjoyed a few rounds of their skinny margaritas, La Flaca. I also love that they recycle La Gritona tequila bottles and use them as water bottles -- such a cute and thoughtful touch. We ordered the coliflor fundido, which was absolutely amazing. My mom was so intrigued by the rest of the menu that we ended up canceling our dinner reservation elsewhere and decided to stay and dine at Chulita instead. Chulita is one of my favorite restaurants on Adams. Great for breakfast, brunch, or dinner. Highly recommend the beach burrito. The Arrachera steak was pretty good as well. They have a wide range of tequila and mezcal options, and all of their cocktails are great. I recommend La Chulita if you like a spicy mezcal cocktail. Our servers were great and checked on us often. The food here is delicious! I liked everything I ordered. I went in the middle of the day thinking it would be dead like 3pm and nope it was packed. My first thought is they're just understaffed by a 2-3 people. No host, I had to wait until the server was finished taking an order to be told I could sit at the bar if I wanted. The bar was a mess. Some people had left and there was just one bartender who never even acknowledged or looked at me for 10 mins. A second bartender showed up and quickly cleaned off the dirty dishes within about 60 secs, took my order and we were off. My first items were chips and guac and a cup of soup. Pretty fast stuff. I sat there with nothing. A couple came in and sat next to me maybe 4-5 mins later, he took their order and their stuff came out within 5 mins. I still have nothing. Finally, my chips and guac comes and the runner puts it on the bar and asks where it goes. The bartender looks at his computer because he can't figure it out. EVERYONE at the bar is eating and one person has no food and it's a mystery to him. Even though the chips are sitting next to me I just sat silently watching him try to figure this out. He finally asks ME, did you order chips and guac? Yeah. Yeah I did. By the end of the meal another bartender showed up and I could see everyone was starting to catch up with service. I drove by one day on the way home from the gym and knew I had to visit because it was adorable. Vegan Nachos- I will always get nachos on any menu. This was wonderful. The nacho cheese didn't necessarily taste like nacho cheese but was still fantastic. I got the quesadilla and added mushroom which I was obsessed with!!!! Picked up my mom from LA airport and she was craving Mexican food. I found Chulita in Venice and were so happy we found this place. The service was very attentive, the ambiance was beautiful inside, very boho Mexican style. Everyone around us was ordering the guacamole so we knew that was a staple at this restaurant. I definitely suggest also getting the salsa it was delicious. We also got the ceviche, which was great flavor, and chicken and fish tacos! We tried both the cassava and corn tortillas, you can taste the freshness. I love my entree. The arrachera really hit the spot. The hanger steak and carrot mole was perfect! Carlos as an amazing bartender. He made excellent recommendations. We had some chips and salsa. The blue corn tortillas were phenomenal. We ended up doing a tequila flight and we left it all up to Carlos who made it quite an interesting journey. I highly recommend. The place is clean gives me New York vibes in LA... Great music playing in the background and just interesting people. I met a cancer researcher sitting next to me at the bar. It's pretty cool. We had a great time and we will be back. read more
