I took my car to Chuck's Garage for the first time earlier this year for an oil change and had a great experience. Took it back last month because it sounded like my driver's side, front wheel was making a metal-on-metal noise so I wanted to get it checked out. The garage couldn't find anything wrong with my car, so they didn't charge me for anything even though they took the time to check everything out. They definitely could've charged me for labor, but I really appreciated that they didn't since they couldn't find a problem. My car hasn't made any noise since getting it checked out, so whatever the issue was, them taking the time to give everything a good check resolved the issue. Wow, where to begin... Chuck has saved me more times than I can count, but after this last experience I think a review is in order. Aside from always being very timely with our family cars, transparent about problems and charging affordable prices always, he is a great guy. I recently went on a road trip to Florida in a friend's car, only to find out her AC compressor stopped working when we got there. We got a quote from a local mechanic, and being that it was a high priced job, called Chuck for a second opinion. Not only did he stop everything he was doing to give us advice, he even called them himself to make sure they were quoting a fair rate and not trying to get one over on us. I've waited a while to write this review in hopes that things would be made right at Chuck's, but it doesn't appear that that is going to happen so here goes. We've taken our truck to Chuck for a few years now and we thought things were alright. The first indication that something was amiss was last year when he inspected our truck and everything passed inspection. A week after the inspection we had to go to the dealer for a warranty issue. The dealer found our front brakes to be all but gone. We had the dealership do them because we were there, but a call to Chuck was in order for sure. His response was "There was still some meat on them." We gave him the benefit of the doubt, though I was skeptical. Fast Forward to a few months ago. We started having strange charging issues with the truck as well as an air conditioning issue. We took it to Chuck to have him look it over. At first he said there was nothing wrong and charged us for the diagnostic. A week later the truck was dead in front of the house. We got it back down to him and he re-diagnosed it and said we needed a battery. No problem, replace it. He charged us for the diagnostic again and the battery. After a phone call, he credited us for the diagnostic. The Check Engine Light was still on and he said if it didn't reset in a few days to bring it back and he'd override it. Two days ago truck was totally dead again. We had it towed to a different garage and found out out alternator was shot. I'm not a mechanic, but we knew something was wrong. We left the truck with Chuck for a week and said, no matter the cost or how long it takes, just figure out what the problem is. He said he'd drive it himself. (We know he didn't at least more that a mile, we checked the mileage.) For him to return it to us with the Check Engine Light still on was his first mistake, and I have to believe that if there was a charging issue the alternator would be one of the things I check. He's a nice guy, and I'm sure he means well, but I think I'll be taking my business elsewhere. Beware. read more

Chuck's garage is exceptional. Their top priority is customer service. I've found them to be really honest and they do top quality, fast work. They take the time to explain what you need and why. They will also offer options and they don't push you toward the most expensive service. While I was waiting another customer was concerned that she had to replace her rotors more often than other people. The mechanic took the time to ask her about her driving and braking habits and was able to explain what she could do differently to make the rotors last longer. Chucks Garage is by far the most honest mechanic I have ever been to. I had my car towed to the AAA facility on Columbus Blvd because my engine was overheating. AAA quoted me over $2200 worth of work! So to get a second opinion, I brought the car to Chuck. He ran all the necessary tests and figured out my car only needed coolant. I walked out of there with a $60 bill! Chuck knew what AAA's quote was, and instead of taking advantage of that and charging me something similar, he was honest and charged exactly what it cost. Very helpful people at this garage. Welcoming and friendly upon you walking in and they have always assisted me quickly. On my first trip they fixed my tire up (it had a screw in it) very quickly and for bottom dollar. When I called my pops he said I got a bang for my buck. My second trip was for my back brakes. It was about 3pm and he managed to get the parts and fix it before closing. For this I paid a normal price (average for my brakes). Third time was today and it was because my car was making a squeaky sound, I was out of there within 5 minutes.. He filled up my steering wheel fluid and didn't charge me a buck. I was moving from Philly to New York and got assigned Chuck's garage as the pick up spot for my Uhaul van. I was a bit wary at first because I had never heard of the place and because I had originally selected a different pick-up location, but due to availability got sent here instead. Chuck demonstrated a level of professionalism and excellence that deserves to be recognized. He runs a small business and is very busy but I had no clue until I actually went down there personally to pick up the van, because he was so courteous and patient on the phone. Likewise, he was as amiable and patient in person, and he really went out of his way to accommodate me (I needed to pick up the van a night early but have the system register it as being picked up the next morning so that I would have adequate time to return it in NYC). I give him 4 stars not 5 because I can't speak to his abilities as a mechanic, having never had to take my car to him for repairs, but in my dealings with him he was honest and helpful and seemed to legitimately be trying to forge a good name for his business. -Joe read more

He always fixes what is wrong with my car, will always tell me multiple options including the cheaper one, and has patched little things for me for free, like when my bumper was dragging and when my mud flap had popped down onto the ground. Chuck and his coworker Jay are trustworthy mechanics who offer a great value. They're both experienced mechanics. They are not out to sell unnecessary services or expensive parts, but rather suggest just what's needed. I have a 2001 high mileage vehicle that they're keeping safely on the road for me. They were located on Midvale Avenue in Philadelphia and I used to drive the 30 minutes there because they do such great work. as of August 2017 have moved to Ambler location. FINALLY i found a trustworthy mechanic with a repair shop i feel comfortable going to!! Let me start by saying, This is the first review i have ever written. ever- i feel i need to spread the word, especially to all females, and car illiterate people such as myself. So, I have had my car for 6 years, since then i have had numerous problems, and a complete rebuild of my engine! a year and a half ago i started to experience, again, the same problems which led to the rebuilding of my engine which cost me very close to $5,000 altogether!! I towed my car to a few of the local mechanics here in the Manayunk area whom all told me that it would cost me *thousands* of dollars to repair! i did not have the $$ for this so i had the car sitting in the road for a year not knowing what to do and since i had just paid off the car i did not want to just get rid of it. so i waited. I met Chuck a couple of weeks ago and explained to him my situation. he gave me a rundown of what the potential problems could be, and said first things first, replace the battery and if it turns over, or hopefully starts, we will go from there. being that my car did not run in the first place i couldn't get it to the shop to do this. so he offered to come to where the car was on his off time and put it in for me! ( a mechanic making house calls?? unheard of!)so he did, and it started! so in less than a week my car was back to life, running beautifully and has cost me less than $300!!! Much better than the other estimates of thousands of dollars i got in the past! Chuck walked me through, and showed me step by step what he was doing, AND why! he didn't try to scam me because im a female and didn't know much about cars by adding extra unnecessary repairs, (which happens more often than not!) I am so thankful to have stumbled upon this repair shop!!! Chuck and his staff are VERY friendly and attentive, which makes going to the mechanic less stressful than it already is! I had a very good experience at Chuck's. I live in MD and was traveling to PA to purchase a used vehicle, and followed recommendations for this shop from a couple of friends who went to school in the area. I brought the car to Chuck's Garage to have it looked over before buying. After putting it up on the lift and checking everything out, Chuck took me on a test drive around the neighborhood, to listen to a strange sound I had heard that I was worried about. He told me the car was fine mechanically but that I shouldn't buy it unless the dealer could fix the sound issue. (As it turned out, just as he thought, it was the wind hitting a part label under the hood, which was easily fixed by ripping the label off) He also entertained all of my other questions about the car without rushing me, and charged me nothing for his time and expertise. I ended up buying the car, and I was overall very pleased with the service I received. I don't remember being treated with such kindness, patience and respect at any other auto shop. read more

I HAVE FOUND THE MOST HONEST MECHANIC IN PHILADELPHIA (and possibly, the world). My car (Betty II) is 12 years old and runs like a champ; I take good care of her so that I'll have her another 12. I am not one of those people that "knows" cars. I "know" she needs gas and regular oil changes, but beyond that I'm absolutely CLUELESS. I also know I've been taken advantage of over the years at garages here and there, and probably spent a lot more money than I needed to. For these reasons, honesty is the most important thing for me in a mechanic. Not only does Chuck take time to explain to me what's going on, he goes out of his way to make sure parts I need replaced aren't still under warranty before charging me for a new one (saved me $80 last time!), and even gives me a break on services when I'm super strapped for cash. He is truly a "good guy" and always treats Betty and me like his #1 priority, even when the place is packed. We're Chuck's gals for life! read more

With a busy schedule he was able to put my car as a priority and ensured the job was done right. It was a really pleasant and personal experience! All I can say is you got to be kidding! I went to this place based on ratings from this site and others. Boy did I get a shock! I got a quote from them for 2 rear shocks for my car and an alignment of $827.00! I said that was way too expensive and they charged me $44.00 to tell me what I all ready knew. I got a quote from Tuffy of $400.00 for the same repair. Avoid this place unless you want to pay way too much. read more

I know almost nothing about cars, and I, like many, have a terrible feeling of apprehension and nausea whenever something goes wrong with my car and I have to take it in to someone. Now that I know about Chuck's garage I feel much, much better when I have a car problem that needs to be addressed. They are friendly, prompt, and honest. I've done an inspection and had some more in depth work on my alignment, tires, and control arms, and both experiences were excellent. I recommended them to family and friends and will return whenever I need a mechanic.
