The attention to detail impressed us. One painter in particular was such a perfectionist that I watched him run his hand over the walls looking for imperfections from previous paint jobs that needed attention. I started calling him "Mr. Majestic." That level of pride in workmanship says a lot about the crew. Martin also made the process easier from the beginning. We were comparing three contractors, and he included proof of insurance with his proposal without making me chase it down. A neighbor had also recommended him on Nextdoor, and her comments gave us additional confidence that he was the right fit for our project. The crew worked hard, moved furniture as necessary, did an excellent job cleaning up, and even helped rehang pictures. At the end of the project, they left us enough touch-up paint to take care of the inevitable scratches and scuffs that we homeowners will create ourselves. One of the best parts of the project was something we hadn't expected. Martin included a professional Dunn-Edwards color consultation as part of the job. Our consultant, Asia, helped us sort through recommendations from friends and our own endless opinions and guided us to Ball of String. The finished color brightened our home beautifully. And providing a professional paint designer as part of the project may have saved my marriage! Anyone who has tried to get two people to agree on an entire houseful of paint colors will understand. There is one thing Martin and I both probably should have discussed more--the color on the stairwell. We're replacing our front entry door, and I decided to wait rather than spend the additional money now. In hindsight, I was being "penny wise and pound foolish." That's on me as much as anyone. Once the new front door is installed and we've settled on its color, Martin will be the person I call to come back and finish the stairwell the way it should be. The finished interior looks great, Martin kept his commitment, and the crew's workmanship, attention to detail and cleanup were excellent. Perhaps the best recommendation I can give is that I already know who I'll be calling for the next phase of the project. I reached back out to revise the scope of work down to only two projects. Surprisingly, the updated quote for two projects ended up being more expensive than the original quote for all three. When I questioned the pricing, I was told the original pricing was only lower because the work had been "bundled." A few days before the scheduled appointment, I asked whether it would be possible to push the work back by one day due to a busy client schedule at our business. He declined and instead suggested an entirely different date that worked better for him, which delayed the project even further from the original timeline. We agreed in an effort to remain flexible. He later requested a deposit, which was understandable. However, because this was for our business, I requested a detailed written quote and W-9 form so our accounting department could properly process payment. Despite multiple requests, he was unable to provide the documentation needed, and communication became increasingly delayed and inconsistent. At that point, I no longer felt comfortable moving forward and decided to cancel the project. His response afterward was extremely unprofessional, to the point where I ultimately blocked further communication. We ended up hiring another handyman who completed the same work professionally and for nearly 50% less than his quoted pricing. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this handyman to other business owners looking for professionalism, transparency, and reliable communication.
