I had a 3x2 canvas made here for about $185. While that's higher than some online options, it was absolutely worth it. The customer service was outstanding. They finished the canvas in just a couple of days and kept me updated throughout. The photo I provided wasn't high resolution, which I never would have realized if I had ordered through Walgreens or another big chain, but they caught it and worked with me to get the best result. I found this place online as I needed to have a couple of photos printed in high resolution. It's very easy to upload the files on their website and since I did it late at night, they got back to me quick the following morning for a quotation. You can easily pay the invoice through their link and my order was ready for pick up in just under 30 minutes. The shop turned out to be located in the nice area of Little Italy. The photos turned out amazing! Definitely how I envisioned them to be. For something as big as the prints, it cost me around $40. I worked mainly with Jade and James but everyone I came across there was nothing but friendly and patient. They are super responsive and accommodating. My husband orders canvas prints here. This place is worth the drive as we live an hour away. Customer service is always excellent no matter who is working. They always have the canvas packaged up so well, with bubble wrap, cardboard around the trimmings, so nothing gets damaged. Before we leave they take out the canvas so we can review it, see if we like it. I always feel they go above and beyond and always answer our questions about other future prints we want to get. read more

Went to have a pencil drawing my brother did for me copied onto a sturdier paper. I've done this numerous times before at other graphics/photography shops with no problems whatsoever. The gentleman at Chrome Digital informed me that I would need my brother to fill out paperwork and sign a release form in order for them to make a copy of it. Ridiculous! Pro: Fast slide film processing. I used to take my film to George's, and had to wait 2-3 days to get my film back. With Chrome, if they're dropped off before 2, they'll be done before the end of the day. BADASSS. I still have to wait 48 hours for B&W, though. Le sigh. I need my own darkroom.... Con: The first thing that irked me was the front desk clerk's utter lack of enthusiasm. He was a small asian man with a very cold demeanor; maybe dry is a better word. If you're lucky, you'll come in on days when he brings his dog, Coco. She's the light of his life, and he's noticeably less stiff. Otherwise, all the other employees I've encountered have been awesome. Hooray for Coco! read more

Recently I went into Chrome Digital to have a 20"x30" wedding photo canvas made and I Planned to present to a friend at her party (3 weeks out). I was working with James. I came in and talked to him about what I wanted, and I gave him the digital image. He said in a few days he would email me the proof of what the photo looked like after the touch ups. Well a few days went by and I did not get any email from him. So I called him and he said he would have the proof emailed the next day. Again, I had to call him the next day to remind him to send me the proof. He eventually sent it, but I was less than satisfied with the quality I received. It looked as if he rushed me just anything to shut up me up and to get me off his back. So i visited the store and we worked it out. On the Sunday prior to the party, he sent me an email with the proof after he had touched it up again...it looked amazing! I replied back to the email and told him to go ahead and print on canvas. He promised to have it completed by Wednesday. On Wednesday (3 days before the party) I did not get a call or email. I called on Thursday to inquire about the canvas, and someone else answered the phone and relayed a message from James saying that it would be ready Friday before close of Business (1 day before the party!). I asked to speak to James, and I reminded James that he told me it would be ready Wednesday, his response was "Wern't you just told Friday before close of business?" At that point, I knew I no longer was in need of his service. His customer skills were lacking. And he DID NOT stay true to his word, even though he had 3 weeks to work on this. I still opted for Friday, James never called. Never heard from him since, I did not bother calling back because I did not want to be spoken to as if I were his child. PC Photo & Imaging in Encinitas was able to complete my request in a 24 hour turn-a-round! With FLAWLESS results!! read more

I appreciate this business for the services it continues to provide photographers of all levels. I believe they are the only place in town that does pure b/w and E-6 processing. I've used them for the latter, to xpro a roll of regular color negs just for kicks. I support them for keeping film alive (if at a somewhat higher cost) while moving forward with quality digital services. I would caution them, however, on the way they receive novice photogs eager to experiment with film. I'm sure they deal with a high volume of professionals and could really give a crap about my damn sprocket holes, but it would be nice if they humored me a little instead of rolling their eyes when I make out-of-the-ordinary requests. read more

What an unfortunate experience. I thought after reading the Yelp reviews this place would be a winner. I brought in something for a business project thinking it would be best to support a local business instead of an internet print shop. I was promised I could pick up my project on X day. I call and could tell the guy didn't know what I was asking about as it took him awhile to look up. I was told it wasn't ready but assured it would be the next morning when I came in. I even told him I'd be by early morning. When I went in the next day, guess what? It wasn't ready. The guy told me to go grab a coffee somewhere nearby while they "cranked it out". That was unbelievable because he basically admitted without saying it that they hadn't even worked on it. So - no apology from the guy on the phone, no apology the second time it wasn't ready either... It was ready the next day, but by this point all love was lost by the poor customer service experience. I watched the people working there not greet customers (including myself) when they walked in. Good news is I got a huge order from a client for what was a tiny "business project"...bad news is there is no way I'll ever give Chrome my business again. Could be a great business if they just worked on their customer service skills. read more

I dropped off a couple rolls of 120 film to get developed, and although they had a posted two day turn around time, the guy told me he'd have it ready in 15 minutes. When I came back, a different guy handed over my film, offered to box it up for me, and directed me toward the light table. Trash. Very very sloppy with material. Lost my hundreds of hours of edits. I worked in the film industry in Hollywood for a decade and have lots of experience dealing with labs and photography. The day I came in, kid up front......really seemed like he did not understand. So i slowed it down and tried to explain. I told him that it was an old photo project on hard drive and did not have software to pull it up or time to investigate how to get a hold of. Told him I was nervous about handing over my only copy because several hundred of hours of edits invested in large portfolio. Ask him if I should go out and make a copy or if they were use to handling material with care. He was very very dismissive. He went to back room and I was only one standing in lobby for about 10 minutes. And I started to smell strong weed smell and it was obviously guys in back lighting up (not my clerk, I don't think, he looked normal when he returned). Owner came out...told him I could go find software if needed but was busy and then I asked if he felt I needed to go out and make copy. He was loud and just kept sort of saying relax and a bit rude like I was asking a stupid questions. Some short guy, don't know his name. Very flippant makes very inappropriate jokes when these projects represent huge costs in time and money. I blew off his flippant comment but I should have taken as warning as laxed business attitude. Next week....they lost hard drive......major demo portfolio that contained several original pieces ( no copy) with hundreds of hours of edits, gone.... Incredible. So irresponsible. Stupid....offered to pay for the hard drive it was on.......(minor costs, how stupid). Dude, the cost was in the lost material and hours of labor. Should smoke dope full time and not advertise as a business....so unprofessional. Avoid !!!! !!!!!!!! read more

I cannot rave enough about these guys. My main dude is James and he has always delivered! I have come to them every year for five years now to get my San Diego County Fair International Photography show pieces printed and matted. Whether is two prints or ten, they always do an incredible job! And things are always ready by the day promised. Last year, I had a small stack of photos that were to be exhibited and wanted to pick different papers for each one. James printed every photo on half a dozen different papers so I could see and feel the difference. Seriously, who does that??? I send everyone I know to them and they all leave satisfied and happy. I've been using Chrome Digital since 2008 on print projects that really matter to me. There are other shops around that are cheaper and I'll sometimes use those if quality is not the greatest importance in the project that I'm working on. But when I want to put something on my wall or it's something that is going in to competition and I don't mind paying a little more for the premium service I always go there. When you walk in to Chrome they have a nice waiting room with a big window on the street side, local artists work on two walls and on the third wall are work stations where they load up your photos, review them and give you advise for the project you are working on. This is where I feel the big difference is. When I'm spending several hundred dollars on a project, I want to make sure that the printer understands what my goals are and I want to get feedback since they are the printing experts. On the last project that I worked on I was up against a deadline for a print competition and they were able to help me meet it even though they were very busy that week. I was already spending hundreds of dollars on entry fees so there was a lot depending on the speed and quality of the work. They were great to work with and I recommend them for any photo printing projects that are important to you. read more

I've been using Chrome for over 10 years now. I wasn't even 18 when I met Shad and James -- scary, they've watched me go from "punk kid" to "punk twentysomething". The photographer I used to assist for shot mostly 4x5 with some 220, and we were shooting 6 days a week. That means I'd drop first sheets or lead snips in the afternoon, pick them up an hour later and run them back to the studio, then call in the balance after the photographer reviewed them and usually pick the balances up on my way to the studio the next morning. Those were the days! Now everything's digital, of course, and Chrome has made that transition well. They're now the place where I get all of my prints, and some more advanced retouching that I don't feel confident doing myself. I've had several photographer buddies ask why I don't own a photo printer and the answer is always that I have Chrome 10 minutes away...printer calibrating, paper management, etc., are all just not worth the hassle when I have a lab like Chrome so close. Five stars, all the way. I can say without hesitation that, as a professional, having a lab like Chrome nearby makes life so, so, so much easier. I'd be devastated if these guys went away -- let's keep them around forever, yeah? read more

My dad is an artist that has never really had the drive to get his art out to the public. I had the idea to put his art on Etsy (daddyoart.etsy.com) and to make prints, shirts, greeting cards, you name it. First thing was first: get his original artwork into digital format. I scouted out places around San Diego and came across Chrome. I liked their website and it looked like they had positive Yelp reviews so I checked them out. I didn't know any terminology, I didn't know how film or digital processing worked. All I knew is that I was really going to appreciate it if the people at Chrome were going to be patient with me. Sam, the front desk clerk that another Yelper didn't have anything good to say about, helped me out big time. He explained everything to me and I could sense that he really respected the project I wanted to create. I have come to really like Sam and I think he is great at what he does. He also leaves very thorough and professional voicemails. We started with making prints from color transparencies that my Dad had. The prints turned out great. They put the digital files on a CD with a very professional looking cover; nice touch. Since these initial color transparencies, we have taken in two original artworks to get photographed and made digital. We also made use of a special they were running on 16x20 prints. We experimented with different print finishes (glossy, matte, lustre) and so far every type has looked great. We plan on continuing to use Chrome as our place to get the original artworks photographed and to get prints made. I recommend this place for a variety of reasons; some of which I have mentioned above. The staff is cool, friendly, helpful, and genuine. I can tell they like what they do and want to deliver a good product/service. They took the time to explain things to me, which I appreciate more than I can put into words. The website (www.chromedigital.com) is clear and easy to navigate. The inside of Chrome is very laid back and I like how they have different prints on the walls to show the different print finishes. SCAMMERS! We ordered and paid for then left with prints for a show back in 2014. Life went on then today we got an email saying we never paid them back in 2014 and that we owed them money. SO now I am being emailed proof from my credit card company after having to call multiples to even find which one we used back in 2014! When I called to tell them it was a mistake I was told that I better figure out a way to prove it or they would go to collections. This is a horrible company run by horrible people who have no idea how to run a business. If we actually never paid (1) How did we leave with the product? Been going here for a while now to get random things done: small prints, enlargements, large prints on metal, etc. They have always been nice and professional and I always get exactly what I want and I am always pleased with the results. I will always come here for all of my photo/print needs. I've read a few negative reviews here on Yelp. One, there are a couple of negative reviews here that don't even have the correct company. Clearly these people are idiots. Two, the couple of people who wrote a negative review for Chrome are probably the type of people who think they are entitled to everything on God's green earth and walk around with sticks up their asses. These guys are awesome and are always down to earth. Yes, they do get busy with a shit ton of other people's work (They're good at what they do!) but I am always made to feel appreciated. Their pricing is competitive compared with the big online print services but when you factor in their local roots and the love they show...pricing alone goes out the door. I've been working with CHROME DIGITAL for many years. I love their easy access location right on Kettner, downtown San Diego, off the 5 freeway, when you're going over to the airport in Little Italy James, Kathy, Shad, and their staff Israel and Danny and some of the other folks over there, are always helpful and friendly and eager to please. They always greet me when I come in by name and get me a chair to sit in, if I have to wait. I'm usually doing touch up on some photographs and I need to meet with one of them to do some art work. They're great with appointment times and with making the time for your deadlines to get your work completed for your clients. I've been doing some of my clients work in acrylics and I just did another clients work on this new wood that they print on. Amazing , really impressed with the colors , the techniques, the style and the quality. Shad has been working with me for years on photographs from Africa. He even produced a collection of photographs for a book for one of his clients. I recommend this place because of the great pricing and great quality and they always get the job done on time. They stay in contact with you and they're very fair about their approach to getting things done.
