I turn 55 this month and due to extreme fear and anxiety, I've put off the very important health screening called....the colonoscopy. I take care of my health and other yearly screenings, but this one has scared me so much due to having to be put into a twilight sleep. Which is the BEST btw...lol... My husband has had a few colonoscopies and was referred to Dr. Christopher Lee. He scheduled an appointment and Dr. Lee told him this will be the best prep he's ever had. According to my husband, Dr. Lee was not lying. lol.... Fast forward, it was the best prep & colonoscopy my husband has ever had. My husband kept encouraging me to schedule my appointment. After a few months, I finally did. First, I had my virtual consult with Dr. Lee. He explained everything to me and went over my health history etc. Dr. Lee is Very nice and so funny! I immediately felt at ease and trusted him. My appointment was booked and via email I received the colo prep packet that is full of step by step information. Dr. Lee's prep is seriously NOT bad at all! I've heard horrible stories about how awful prep is and how awful colonoscopies are, which was another part of why I have avoided scheduling my appointment. The entire staff at Dr Lee's office is so nice and supportive. I called them A LOT with various questions during the week leading up to my appointment, during prep, & up until the morning of, when I noticed something, (I will not go into details..lol) I called the on call dr, who happened to be Dr. Lee, he called me back right away, and said what I was experiencing was okay and normal. When I arrived at the office, in full panic attack mode, the front desk staff, was nice and welcoming. The woman who took my paperwork and admitted me was so nice and comforting. I cried a bit due to fear...lol and she was so understanding and nice. Terri, the RN who prepped me for my procedure was INCREDIBLE and so nice. I always have to bring in a month's worth of Blood Pressure readings from home, because I get white coat syndrome at any Dr visit. (And now, I actually have high blood pressure) I gave her my readings and she attached them to my chart. We spoke about everything unrelated to my procedure and she answered all of my questions regarding my procedure and took great care of me under my panic. Thank You Terri! :) Olivia, came and got me and wheeled me into the room for the procedure. Panic and tears started and she couldn't have been nicer and comforting. Truly amazing as well. Thank You Olivia! :) Dr. Lee's assistant came in and introduced himself to me and then Dr. Lee came in and went over everything in my chart. Again, he was so nice and funny. Had I not been in such a panic, I would've laughed harder at his jokes. Olivia and Dr. Lee explained the drugs I was going to be given to feel good and relaxed and said procedure would be about a half hour or less. They asked if I was ready and I said yep! I felt my body get very relaxed and LITERALLY felt like I had just closed my eyes, when Dr Lee was showing me the pics on the monitor of my colon & 2 pre cancerous polyps that he removed and explained to me some more things that I don't remember, lol. He said he and a nurse would be calling me the next day after procedure to go over all of this again. I was given a juice which tasted SO GOOD afterwards. lol. The post procedure RN came to get me and wheeled me into recovery and gave me more juice. :). THANK YOU Dr. Lee and your team that took such good care of me and treated me with kindness and understanding from the very start to the very end. I'm so grateful my husband and I have you as our Dr. for all of our gastro needs. :). I recently had a colonoscopy performed by Christopher Lee, M.D. The prep instructions were quite explicit regarding when and how much Miralax I should take as prep. Strangely, they called for treatments 8 hours, then 4 hours before the procedure. I recalled from previous experience that such treatments had ocurred the day before the procedure, and my wife, whose also had colonoscopies, confirmed that experience. But I decided to trust Dr. Lee, and followed his instructions to the letter. The result was that at the time of the procedure, my GI tract was still full (nothing significant had passed). Before I was prepared for an IV, I expressed my concerns to the RN, which she relayed to Dr. Lee, and the message that came back was that Dr. Lee wanted to proceed anyway. When I was rolled into the OR, I expressed those same concerns in detail directly with Dr. Lee, but again he chose to proceed anyway. When I woke-up, I was told that I Was in fact too plugged to complete the colonoscopy, and was told to get a cologuard from my PCP instead, which I was later informed is merely a test looking for blood, the presence of which would require another colonoscopy. Dr. Lee told me that the prep doesn't work for everybody, but given all else I now know, I'd be surprised if it worked for Anybody. The night after the procedure, I finally began to pass on a large scale.....so doing the prep the day BEFORE would have been the right move. Moral of the story? I was quite simply given Defective prep, and my pleas that the prep wasn't working were ignored. Don't trust Dr. Christopher Lee over your personal experience, and if you can't trust him, find a different GI. read more

Very disappointing first time office visit. I read some good reviews, so I was looking forward to meeting Dr. Christopher Lee. I had concerns about my ongoing symptoms, and I asked a handful of questions, but I had to repeat the same question a few times because I wasn't getting a constructive answer. Several times Dr. Lee's response was "Because you're full of shit!" It was possibly an attempt at humor, but I didn't laugh the first time, the second time or any of the other times, and I left his office wondering what I did to deserve that. My conduct was professional, so I was expecting a professional response. Frankly, I felt verbally abused. Nobody wants to be put down and disrespected by somebody who they entrust with their life. I called my boyfriend to run it by him. His first response was, "that's terrible he talked to you like that", and "that's unprofessional". That was my gut feeling too, so I called the office and spoke with the office manager who was vaguely apologetic. She did say "sorry about that", but also suggested I find a doctor whose personality was a better fit. I won't be returning. read more

I had seen Dr. Lee for about 3-4 years. I have had chronic stomach/back pain that was directly associated with food. He had good bedside manner so I continued to consult with him even when my problems never went away. It was not until 2021 where my pain intensified and got worse that I reached breaking point and saw another GI. I had seen other specialists to try and pin down the problem as it seemed to be my whole upper and lower GI tract. I kept in touch with Dr. Lee and told him of different symptoms. Like he did in the past, after a clear endoscopy, he told me to try changing diet and take Pepsin. I knew this was not the solution. I had changed my diet: multiple times. At the time I did not know what worked and what did not because healthy foods like apples seemed to make me more sick whereas others did not. I knew nothing about SIBO then so did not even think to mention specific foods but told him I cut out high fat foods. This never got rid of the pain. I eventually developed bone pain so after the last correspondence I decided to seek another doctor. So thankful I did. Dr. Lee told me, in so many words, it was just a diet/acid issue, it turned out I had been suffering from SIBO for years. Dr. Lee never once told me to seek another doctor. I did not fit the box he knew but instead of referring me elsewhere or suggesting more testing, I got basic advice I had already done. Dr. Basseri is a stomach pain specialist and immediately ordered a SIBO test for me which came back positive. I say this so people know to A) always advocate for yourself and B) do not let doctors think you are crazy. Dr. Lee was always nice and I am sure in his box is a good doctor if you present normal symptoms. However, a couple years ago, I told him I felt like I was dying the pain was so bad. And no, I was not being dramatic. SIBO can wreak havoc on your body and immune system but he just responded "We are all dying." Thanks Captain Obvious. He probably does not even remember that encounter but I always did. I stayed with him because I did start to feel crazy after that and did not want to the "that woman" where I was overly dramatic for no reason. Turns out I should have walked years ago. After my SIBO diagnosis, I sent an email to him that asked him in the future to think more creatively/out of the box for future patients. I was not mean nor did I swear at him. Just asked him to do better when people present differently. I got kicked off the patient platform by him after that which I am not surprised nor do I particularly care. I had a baby ten months ago and have felt like I'm falling apart. I have been to 6 different doctors, including a gastroenterologist, for the same unresolved issue. The previous GI sent me on a wild goose chase and told me to keep taking a medication despite my having no improvement after several weeks. My OB GYN threw a Hail Mary my way with her suggestion that I call Dr. Lee for a second opinion. I owe her one; I couldn't have had a better experience. Dr. Lee was kind, compassionate, thorough, and very knowledgeable. He listened to my symptoms, asked the right questions, and uncovered a very simple diagnosis that had been missed by several different doctors. He also was very relatable and, quite frankly, I enjoy him as a human being. I hope to never need to see him again but if I have any GI issues he's my guy! read more

I do not recommend Dr. Lee. I went in for severe abdominal pain. He did not do a physical exam on me at all, as a matter of fact, he didn't even come near me. He said that my pain was due to past trauma, and that I would need a psychologist and a psychiatrist "in my back pocket" for the rest of my life. He said he would do an endoscopy procedure to look at what was going on, but very crudely showed me how/why the endoscopy procedure could be triggering based on my past trauma. He gave me nothing for pain, and to emphasize, did NO physical exam. I ended up in the ER a few days later where I got some medication that helped and a $5,500 bill afterwards. I am extremely shocked at the lack of professionalism of Dr. Lee. I wrote in a complaint and never heard anything so I am resorting to leaving this review. He seems extremely prejudiced, and as a gastroenterologist has no business commenting on other specialties (I work in healthcare). Would never return to see this doctor. read more

Admittedly I was afraid upon reading the 1 star reviews about Dr. Lee prior to making an appointment with his office for for my first colonoscopy. Understanding everyone--doctors included--have differing opinions on everything, I called Dr Lee's office to schedule the consultation. Front office staff/receptionist extremely nice...not once was anyone ever rude to me. Marissa (De Lee's RN @ the time of this writing) is very sweet personable. I've dealt with many doctors in my life so I'm used to dealing with the arrogance that sometimes comes with it...and yes, Dr Lee is straight forward, but that's my personality too, so we mesh well together from a patient/doctor perspective. Dr. Lee is very down to earth and accommodating which I appreciate. Based on my interactions with him, I can tell he likes to have fun and is funny,...again my personality too, but, we're in a business setting and that takes precedence as it should. I read somewhere that Dr Lee's care is "very expensive." LOL! Newport Beach/Hoag Hospital nothing cheap about those four words. I only wish everyone could have access to such great, world renowned healthcare. Thank you Dr. Lee and staff for the great and even greater care following up to calm my nerves. I have never written a bad review in my life but I cannot help writing this one. I have never had a Dr speak to me the way Dr Lee does. He has brought tears to my eyes twice. His bedside manner is beyond horrible. I hate confrontation and was nothing but nice to him every time. He speaks down to you, makes rude comments that are extremely unprofessional and makes you feel like an idiot on top of it. Once he makes a diagnosis he sticks to it even though the problem hasn't been resolved. Nobody should make you feel this way, especially a Dr you are paying to feel better. So, I hit the big 5-0, and we all know what that means....! Actually, I had shoulder surgery last year to avoid the whole thing. Not a great way to get out of it! Anyway, I scheduled an appointment with Dr Lee (he was booked 3 months out!) and went and met with him to schedule my procedure. He was very professional yet witty, and provided me with lots of reasons why the colonoscopy remains the golden standard to detect colon cancer. Three additional months later, I was scheduled for my scope at 1pm. I was able to eat breakfast and lunch the day before, and worked a normal day at work without dealing with any pangs of hunger. I had broth and jello for dinner (blech!) to try to stave off the grouchies, then went to bed. Woke up at 4:30am to start "the cleanse". I'm not going to lie, it was NASTY. I don't want to drink 96oz of ANYTHING in a 6 hour period, and this was no exception. I arrived at the clinic and briefly met with Dr Lee before they sent me off to LaLa land. It was all over before I knew it. The scope truly is the easy part. Dr Lee "gets it". He knows nobody wants to be there, and he keeps his humor on point, and the music in his OR lively. The only reason I deducted a star is the crazy long wait to get the initial appointment, as well as the procedure itself. I got the "all clear" phone call from Dr Lee himself the following day, and don't have to deal with any of this nonsense again for another 10 years. Just do it. read more

Dr, Lee said it best, "Those that scope together, stay together" Turning 50 isn't fun and no one gets excited about that colonoscopy that follows that birthday either. However, Dr. Lee made it tolerable and easy. The prep: Have breakfast and lunch the day before and broth for dinner. Wake up before dawn and start drinking the prep. Pretty much any drink you choose (except red) with Miralax. Then wait for it! Check into the Hoag Outpatient (which is next to his building) around noon. Best part is that at noon time, all morning surgeries are done. We were the only two in the whole place. No anxious waiting for our turn. It was so easy that there is no excuses to not get this done. words of advice - warning -TMI- I was beyond full and started throwing up the drink. I was told later that it wasn't necessary to keep drinking if I was clear in the toilet. Also- I started off drinking orange gatoraid and that was a mistake as I soon started to feel woozie from all the sugar in it. I switched to plain Ice tea. I liked the music in the surgical room and that Doctor Lee was singing along when I was brought in. He seems like a regular guy, which we liked. No stuffy pompous attitude and he calls it like it is. Maybe some think that is not "professional" but I rather liked him for being "normal". I also liked that he called personally for a follow up the next day. I have Crohn's and ulcerative pancolitis. Not a simple case because there are lots of things that are outside the standard IBD cookie cutter model. I am working hard to manage my conditions through lifestyle, strict food choices that work for my body and by using hyperbaric chambers along with one medications that controls some of the troubles (nystatin) and another that I use as needed because it works. My generalist suggested Dr Lee. I wasn't too excited because I have already seen a number of GI doctors. I went under her recommendation and brought my binders with all my medical testing information as of many years with me. Wait time was very long. Welcome was more like a factory line than friendly. When I met him I explained what I was doing to manage my conditions, gave him what he would want to understand my condition. I was clear that I wanted a doctor on board who respected my choices and management of my conditions (after all - I live in my body). He suggested medications even though I said I wasn't interested in them. I took the suggestions to go home and do research while expressing my desire to stay off of these types of medications because their side effects were going to weaken areas of my body that were already weak to begin with. One was not reimbursed and would cost $3,000/month. The other was likely to cause leukemia. When he realized that I was more pro-active and more personally involved and not willing to comply. He was very pushy about the meds, let me know that without them I was certain to have future repercussions. Did the shaming, humiliation tactic with a smile. When he saw that he wasn't reaching me with those tactics he told me I was an attractive lady and what a shame it would be if I had a bag with my poop in it on my abdominal area because it wouldn't be too pleasing to a man. He came and showed me on my tummy where it would be placed. He believed he was helping me to see more clearly what the consequences would be (in his eyes). In essence he just wanted me to comply because that is what makes HIM comfortable, but I live in my body 24/7. It needs to work for ME, not the doctor. It took me a few weeks to recover psychologically from what he did and to sort myself out. Was I being naïve? Was I putting myself at risk? Would men refuse me and find me repulsive if at some point my colon needs to be removed and I have a colostomy bag? read more

Dr. Lee is a fantastic doctor. I went to him with stomach pain and he was very thorough in all the tests he ordered. He was always very kind and professional and assured me we would get the reason why I was having pain. He finally determined it was a gall bladder problem and referred me to a surgeon. He is very quick in his follow up through emails and he always made time for me. You can get an appointment pretty quick and you don't have to wait for long periods in the waiting room. I recently had my first colonoscopy with Dr. Lee. During the procedure, cancer was discovered. Dr. Lee immediately took control of the situation, and while I was still in recovery, he had contacted a "team" of other physicians (including an oncologist and a solo-rectal surgeon) to provide the needed follow-up care as quickly as possible. He then continued to keep abreast of my situation, reviewing test results from an endoscopy and CT scan, and calling me directly to explain what these tests revealed. He cares about his patients and goes way beyond the proverbial "extra mile". My wife and I highly recommend Dr. Lee for any issue within the scope of his expertise (which is quite expansive). read more

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's given this doctor a one star rating. Really a one star is too polite from my experience. I am a 21-year-old female who has a gastrointestinal issues on and off since I was six, but he has gotten worse since I had turned 18. I wanted to treat it naturally but my stomach issues were still being consistent, so I finally wanted to see someone about it. Here is a little background: I went to a Gastro specialist (let's call him Dr. George). Dr. George's treatment plan was trying different kinds of antacids for three months before he scheduled me for an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. He believe it was just Gerd and IBS even though I had symptoms of malabsorption when I would eat certain things (look up the definition don't feel comfortable explaining here) and he was still say oh it sounds like something I read on the Internet even though I legit was having those symptoms plus elevated cal protection levels. And said he would say it was endometriosis because "those cells can grow in the stomach". Not denying that possibility, but then again, malabsorption, calprotectin, trouble eating three meals a day because my stomach shrunk then, not correlated. Long story short he couldn't find anything, I looked somewhere else,happen to run into his office and the receptionist told me that Dr. Lee was a really good doctor, so long story short I made my appointment for the next month in March. One of the worst decisions I ever made. When I saw him he told me that he looked at my paperwork and said that he was trained by Dr. Yelp. This doctor Dr. Lee basically said because he was trained by Dr. Yelp he didn't want to examine me because he "trusts his word completely". Keep in mind I have been having trouble digesting fats and proteins, was constantly feeling sick to my stomach, and had basically been living off of snack foods. Not to mention I have been having fluctuating weight problems (146-132 within a week and a half). not only that, I was also getting flu-like symptoms that would last for three weeks- had them since October and was still happening in March. No I'm not one for confrontation especially with doctors but when he told me that I have never felt my blood boil so intensely, so I had told him this was all not in my head. He retorted by saying "You don't want to hear anything-you don't want to know the truth". There was more going back-and-forth with his nonsense that was just so mentally taxing so I'm just gonna do everybody a favor and summarize it. The conversation finally starts and then hit an all time low when he said he "didn't want to do anything, everything is perfectly fine. He you don't wanna listen I already know what's wrong with you: 1.) You need to get tested for endometriosis (even though I know endometriosis doesn't make you belch up apart of your meals, nor makes your stomach gnaw after trying to eat raw veggies or nuts, or more gruesome G.I. symptoms that I can't go into detail here) 2.) you have sinus issues and just need a nasal spray (even though I was legit bedridden from random chill attacks that came before it, while having my throat so painfully swollen/irritated I wanted to cry)land 3.) you need an ANTI-DEPRESSANT because I seemed anxious. After he said that, I. Seemed. Anxious. Folks, I'm actually not against medications like that, because I do understand the ways that they could benefit mental health, but I don't think a gastroenterologist would be in their right mind saying that, especially if the stomach issues are causing one of the main stressors in the first place. I couldn't remember much after he said that, just kind of went quiet with stunned silence and said something along the lines of "OK fine, thank you". The cherry on top of the cake was when he was about to leave and my mom had to remind him that he still had not even DONE THE EXAMINATION!! And when he did it was barely any effort, almost as if he didn't want to do the examination. This is a PSA announcement, if you happen to have gastrointestinal issues and you want to see the specialist please do not go to someone that acts like they have received their medical degree from a clown school in the suburbs. read more

I was with my partner on his two appointments and I felt that Dr. Lee doesn't listen to his patients and that he shows an uncaring attitude and no empathy at all. He rushed my partner and my partner was forced to have another endoscopy after having a serious emergency procedure in Santa Barbara during our Anniversary. After which he claimed that that emergency procedure in Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara claimed never took place so later he acknowledged after receiving all medical documents from the Hospital. Lastly he told my partner that there is nothing else he could do to my partner which have my partner no hope at all. Today was my first Colonoscopy. As unpleasant as it seems, it wasn't that bad. I am glad I went and it's done and over. Honestly, I was a little worried and even e-mailed Dr. Lee prior to the procedure to ask about other options. He responded quickly with a very honest answer of the benefits from the procedure compared to the other options. Dr. Lee and his team did a great job! Beware, if you need a doctor who is curious to find out what could be wrong with you Dr Lee is not that doctor. It seems from the reviews that he is very good with basic procedures. But when given an opportunity to try to discover what is truly going on he jumps to a conclusion and sticks with it. Dr. Lee came into the examining room talking and then lectured due to lifestyle. Never once asked about pain or wanted to see where it hurts just read notes and stated what he thought was going on. Poor quality of care. read more

Recommended by another gastro doc at Hoag Irvine, Dr. Lee is a straight-shooter who explains issues clearly and with compassion as required. He also has a good sense of humor , which helps as well. A breath of fresh air as my wife (who is his patient) had several liver and other internal organ issues, and her previous gastro docs never could explain the issues and instill the confidence we now have with Dr. Lee. Dr. Lee is the absolute best gastroenterologist. I have been to a few others as I have ulcerative colitis, and he is the most compassionate, and informative doctor ever. I don't want to say too many great things about him, because I enjoy that he takes his time with me and treats me like I am a very important patient. Dr Lee has changed my life for the better. I was dealing with extreme nausea for 3 months and went to other doctors, including another gastroenterologist, and they had no idea what was wrong. Dr Lee sent me to get a HIDA scan to check my gallbladder and it was only working at 9%. When I got the results I cried of joy because I finally had my answer.
