Saw Dr Quist for second opinion and in my opinion he has ZERO bedside manner and it's telling how his staff handles patients. I am a HCP and have worked with many doctors and I would not recommend Dr Quist to my loved ones or anyone for that matter. See below for my experience. I saw Dr Quist for second opinion on chronic reflux and swallowing difficulties. I had a horrible experience after my endoscopy. He didn't even consent me prior to endoscopy and I spoke to him for like 15 seconds while they wheeled me into the OR. After endoscopy, he told me his findings very quickly (while I was still waking up from the procedure) so I did not get to ask any questions. He literally stood at the doorway said my findings quickly and walked out. My first endoscopy (with another physician) they called my fiancé in the room prior to doctor explaining my findings. I also was never told by Dr Quist I would be extremely sore after procedure (took multiple biopsies) and for several days it was EXTREMELY painful to swallow (did not have this with first endoscopy with another GI specialist). Sometime after my endoscopy procedure I called in due to having RUQ pain and concerned about my gallbladder and received a call back from his assistant who told me to complete abdominal ultrasound and HIDA scan. I completed ultrasound which showed an enlarged liver which he did not seem to be concerned about and I only ever talked to his assistant. Called by her a few days later about the biopsies and told my results and to take a medication and to make sure to keep my appointment. Well just received a call from the reception asking to move my appointment. She was extremely rude and condescending and ultimately read my results again on the phone and basically told me it's not worth coming in if I didn't do the HIDA scan or take the medications (I am actively trying to conceive which I told him at the initial appointment). Overall, i had very limited interactions with him and his staff was so rude to me when trying to reschedule my 6 week follow up the day of my appointment. It was a very poor experience right from the beginning. I am confused by the good reviews because my experience and treatment was so poor. read more

Went to Dr Quist in early July 2025, had abdominal issues, some which were very painful. He prescribed medication, CT scan, blood work and Endoscope procedure. The medication worked for the painful part of my issues. The other issues have not been addressed!! The CT scan was NEVER ordered by his staff. I had another Ct scan schedualed from another doctor and had Dr. Quist cc'd for it. The blood work was NEVER ordered, when I went to Hoag labs to have it done, I had to go to his office to get the order placed FIRST????? NO ONE from his office has contacted me in the 2 1/2 months since I saw him to follow up and to see if I was better. TERRIBLE staff who have no idea of what they are doing!!!! Doctor Quist seemed good, but because of his CRAPPY, UNPROFESSIONAL staff, I will be looking for another physician!!! read more

Dr. Richard Quist has been treating me for various gastrointestinal issues for about 20 years. I've always trusted his opinion and surgical treatments, and advice. Recently I was in the er for a lower abdominal issue, and Dr. Quist was treating me after I was discharged. On Sunday, Mother's Day, around dinner time, I experienced a complication with a medication, and immediately called Dr. Quist's phone number, and pressed the option for the doctor on call. I was very pleasantly surprised when Dr. Quist answered the phone and calmly assuaged my concerns and gave me very clear instructions and the explanation for his response. I'm feeling much better now and cannot say enough about how much I appreciate Dr. Richard Quist and his staff. read more

Nice office staff. My appointment was scheduled some time out because you have to understand the doctor also has colonoscopies and surgeries scheduled out of his office. He's not in the office all the time. Therefore, appears his standard patient office hours might be limited. Plus he's really popular. HOWEVER, I was on a waiting list. His team called about (2) weeks after setting the appointment. They had a concelation for an appointment that day. I didn't mind running in, with a short notice, because the doctor is the best and kinda cool and I trust him. Particularly in that area as I'm picky/conservative. Thank you :) I wanted to show my appreciation with a nice review. I don't make any reviews unless the services are exceptionally wonderful. Also, I hadn't been checked in a while and was kinda scared so I appreciated the call when a cancelation. Was totally my fault for waiting so late to schedule. Heads-up, to simply schedule your appt sooner. The Doctor has lots of office team staff. He runs a business and needs to pay them too. Plus insurance billing is a nightmare and requires doctors to pay someone to help with that too. Those out of office proceedures ensures he can pay his team a fair wadge to take care of his patients. I run a business and get it. So do the doctors. All my Hoag nurse friends saw the doctor. I ended up on junky insurance for a while. I waited untill better insurance to see this doctor again. Doctor is worth the wait. The office team was very busy on phones and answering calls. Doctor was totally on time. I didn't need to wait. I simply remember for the brief moment I was in the waiting room how I could not handle all the calls with various questions his team had to answer. Their phones were ringing non-stop. Even when driving home I remember how his office team was so busy and they still called when the doctor had a concelation. I was glad that I simply ran in. Anyway, sometimes you have to 'go with the flow' and understand the other person and running a business side too. Simply get on a cancelation list and keep in mind you might have to run in, that day. Or, schedule your appt sooner knowing there might be a wait. The DOC is worth it and super cool. And, I'm in my 60's :) Totally cool ! Thanks a bunch. read more

This is the first time I have ever written a complaint! After waiting 3 months for a consult with MD Quist the App. maker called while I was driving, to verify app. time and location. When I asked her to please text or e-mail information she sounded confused and said they legally cannot communicate if I am not an established patient. What? Frustrated, I advised I could not recall this information while driving and it is not illegal to send an email. She let it be known there was nothing she could do and advised me that she did not have to tolerate my temperament over this matter and would hang up. I could not believe she said that and remarked "are you kidding" to which she promptly hung up! As a senior, I have never been subjected to such unprofessionalism in the medical field. She aggressively talked over me in telling me what I have to do in preparation for the appointment in complete dismissal, annoyance and admonishment over my inquiries. Not just unprofessional, I found her actions extremely caustic and an appalling representation and reflection of your practice. She has been given far too much latitude within her comfort zone of deciphering who is and isn't allowed in gaining access to your practice. After reading a few 1 star reviews I feel I have to write a review like now!! I'm currently on the Beautiful Majestic Princess cruise ship but I'm taking the time to write this review to give my assessment of the staff. I have a friend who has an emergency situation calling me asking me for a recommendation for a gastroenterologist, I had to beat up on my brain to remember Dr Quist name as I had seen him a year ago n have been so busy I have not had a chance to review. I called Dr Quist for an appointment to get a colonoscopy, the staff was as polite to me as I was to them, the lady who helped me was super nice, it was during the Covid full blown pandemic so a long wait was to be expected, I requested a call back should there be a cancellation, sure enough there was, many people canceled due to fear, not me I lived a normal life n took the immediate appointment. What was amazing was Dr Quist protocol, I had a colonoscopy before n I had ptsd! It was very stressful what I had to go through, too much to drink, a gallon of disgusting taste fluid. Dr Quist instructions were amazingly clear n simple, no enema! I could not finish the lesser amount required I called the office if I recall correctly at 7am, I got an answer right away that it was ok so why people complain about the staff? I have no idea. Dr Quist is a compassionate dr, he has excellent bedside manners, before the colonoscopy he asked me if I had any more questions, I wanted to know the exact dose n drugs he used, he told me n assured me everything would be fine, I worked in the biggest medical center n I have never known any doctor as caring as he is to take the time to talk to a patient. I pray my friend will get an appointment w Dr Quist. 3 years ago I had an unnecessary abdominal surgery so I know from experience how important it is to find a good doctor Especially in gastroenterology. I cannot get over how snotty and rude the lady was at the front desk. She talk to me so condescending and arrogant and it was completely unnecessary. When trying to make an appointment they were three months out. The lady told me if I didn't like it I should go to the emergency room if it was an emergency otherwise do I want the appointment or not? I understand people get busy but when you are at doctors office you are expected to Treat people with dignity. I had a colonoscopy this AM by Dr Quist. I'm so happy I was referred to him. He prescribes pills instead of the dreaded liquid for the prep and it's a much more gentle approach. He is a class act - he listens to concerns and quickly adapts to make the patient more comfortable. I chose low sedation and was awake and able to watch the screen while he worked. Rude, condescending and non empathetic is the what comes to mind after my conversation with the office staff at Dr Quist's office. Apparently I should have read the reviews 3 months ago when I made this appointment because terrible customer service seems to be a common theme in this office. It makes me wonder if the Dr condones this type of treatment of patients? I live 30 miles away and while driving in to my appointment yesterday I hit a significant amount of traffic due to an accident. I received a call from the office stating we are canceling your appointment because you are late. After telling them the situation and how long I had been driving to get there, and how long I had waited for the appointment they absolutely did not care. I was half a mile away at this point. When I asked if I could speak to or get a call back from the doctor the office manager said no because I was patient? I spoke to the receptionist and the office manager both were equally rude. What if I was really sick? Would the Dr refuse to see me if I was 15 minutes late. The ironic part is that we all know it is common to wait way past your appointment time doctors offices. Dr Quist - if you care about your practice I would recommend evaluating your staff. I would love to discuss this with you. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Haven't been to the office to see Dr Quist so this isn't about him as a Dr. This is about his front office staff, in particular, the girl who makes appointments. Because of the treatment I received over the phone, I wouldn't be visiting anytime, ever! If this doctor (and I use the term loosely) could get no stars at all - THAT WOULD BE AN ACCURATE ASSESSMENT! Made an appointment for a serious concern. Felt from the start that the doctor was not listening, but he said he would address the concern during my colonoscopy (I had no immediate plans for this procedure, but scheduled the $$$$ procedure to get my concern addressed.) Coming out of the anesthesia I made my initial inquiry again "Ahh, it was only a skin tag!" was the response. When I indicated that his assessment was considered lackadaisical at best, he responded "Well if it starts to bother you, make another appointment." Why would I spend more of my benefit $$$'s and out-of-pocket co-payment to get what I didn't get and should have gotten at the first appointment!!!??? He was able to get my benefit dollars for the colonoscopy but I was unable to get the answer I sought. I have no intent of ever scheduling with this Doctor again. However, if I'm ever diagnosed with rectal cancer - that will be the time Dr. Quist will see me again -- in court! read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Quist for several years. I am very satisfied with not only Dr. Quist but his wonderful staff. I am someone that has high expectations of my physicians and he goes over and above the call of duty to take care of me. He is very detailed, great listener, takes time with you and ask questions. I have had several conversations with him after hours and many emails back and forth after 10:00pm. My brother is an internal medicine doctor in SB and Dr Quist has taken the time to keep him in the loop also on my issues. The staff is tremendous. I have been a patient of Dr. Quist for more than 10 years. He takes his time during the office visit and asks a lot of questions. I have had acid reflux for more than 10 years but with medication it is under control and practically gone. The regular endoscopies and colonoscopies (twofer!) are proof that all is well. Love the procedure at Hoag, great nursing staff, warm blankets, and genuine care. I know people who have esophageal cancer and it is not something you want to take lightly. It is sad to be surprised by great follow up and patient care these days ... Cynthia has been great about return phone calls and making sure I had correct medication and answers to questions. This guy SAVED MY LIFE!!! I had been struggling with acid reflux for many, many years. Dr Russ Kleine referred me to Dr Quist. He suggested I do an endoscopy. I was very nervous but had the procedure done at Hoag. They gave me warm blankets, I was pretty much already asleep before they gave me the IV. After the procedure, I woke up, was alert, but they gave me much assistance getting to out the door. I was diagnosed with H Pylori. I was given a few rounds of antibiotics. The antibiotics worked. I wasn't yet convinced that I was better because I still had symptoms. Dr Quist assured me that it would take about a year for the gastritis and re flux to go away. He was right! One year later, I had another endoscopy, and found that I was all clear. No more symptoms and now I feel like a new man. Don't be a jerk everyone, trust your doctor and you will feel better. I thought that I could "heal myself," by taking herbs and special diet plans and was told by my friends to try all kinds of stupid stuff. It doesn't work everyone. Listen to your doctor. I have been seeing Dr. Quist for over 2 years for a frustratiing condition. After seeing 2 condescending doctors over the past 3 years, Dr. Quist is concerned and considerate and willing to work with my schedule for procedures. Dr. Quist has been taking care of my wife for over 10 years. She has suffered from Crohns disease for a long time and has gone through some serious flareups. I have been going to Dr. Quist for over 12 years now and he has been extremely sympathetic and helpful with my difficult diagnosis. He has done at least 3 or more colonoscopies on me and each one went well. When we reached a point that my situation seemed to be beyond his scope of expertise he quickly found me the best specialist in the area. His office staff has always been very helpful and friendly towards me. There have been a few times through the years when I needed a certain medication and I couldn't get it from the pharmacy and they found me an extra supply in their office so I had it immediately. I would highly recommend Dr. Quist and have referred my parents and other friends to him in the past. I read some of the posts below and I am quite sure they are talking about a different Doctor's office. I recently found out that I have chronic Lyme Disease which has been the cause of my numerous health issues over the last 20 years. I have been to many many doctor's trying to find answers for my Vertigo, Migraines, late onset of outdoor allergies and food allergies, and intestinal problems! Super disappointed! I have been having issues for a month. I received this doctors name and number from two people at work who use him. Unfortunately, the receptionist was so rude to me before I even got my foot in the door. Before even asking my symptoms and what was wrong I was asked what kind of insurance I had. When I said I didn't have health insurance and that I would be paying cask she said "Oohh.. well, a visit here is expensive, we charge 202.50. Can you afford that?" She sounded so snobby and rude, I was so irritated with the way the conversation was going. "Yes, I can pay the cash". She then all of a sudden sounded interested in taking me on as a new patient. She said they could get me in today (in a half hour). I said I couldn't because I was a work and had meetings, but if they had something the next day or later in the week that would be great. She then became rude again and said "Nope! We are really full:". So I said forget about it. Sounds to me like you don't want to take cash paying patients!! Before asking a patient about their money, ask them why they need a doctor first!!!! That receptionist should be fired the way she acted! read more

I am 66 years old and have been dealing with upper and lower GI, and rectal issues for over 20 years. After being a patient of other gastroenterologists, I asked my primary care physician to recommend a new gastroenterologist. I will forever be grateful that my primary care physician recommended Dr. Richard Quist, who has been treating me for almost half a decade. From the first time I met Dr. Quist (and each office visit since then), I was impressed with his willingness to listen carefully to the symptoms I was describing. He took copious notes and asked many questions. I do not feel rushed when Dr. Quist is treating me in his office. In my opinion, these are important attributes of a caring doctor who truly wants to help patients improve their health. Dr. Quist has successfully performed several medical surgical procedures on me, and has used the results of those procedures to continue to manage my healthcare. I appreciate that Dr. Quist has ordered various tests when he deemed it necessary. Since I travel outside the United States 3-4 times a year, and can be away for almost a month at a time, I appreciate that Dr. Quist also has medical knowledge of potential gastro related issues that can be related to travels to other countries. Now when I travel outside the United States I feel more assured of my GI and rectal area welfare. I have even called Dr. Quist's office when I was outside the United States, and was very impressed when his office returned my calls when I was in another country. Dr. Quist has even called me, and others I know, in the evening to provide medical assistance. Dr. Quist has also provided me with valuable information to prevent GI and/or rectal issues from occurring; e.g. probiotics, nutritional adjustments, etc. I have also received excellent support from Dr. Quist's nursing and office staff, and have been very impressed with the time they take to listen to my questions, either on the phone or in the office. What impresses me most about Dr. Quist is his perseverance to genuinely want to help resolve any GI and/or rectal issue I might be experiencing, and to do so in a sensitive and caring manner. I feel lucky to have Dr. Richard Quist as my gastroenterologist, and am grateful to him and his medical staff for helping me all these years. read more
