Now that I'm older, I've made a conscious decision to be better about my health. Of course, this place was the first thing that came to mind. I came back to see Dr. Maldonado and he didn't disappoint. He will personally call you with your test results and explain what the results mean. On top of that, Dr. Maldonado is not the type who will push one type of treatment without being thorough with your check up. If you're looking for a general physician, make an appointment here and see if you've found yourself your GP. The amount they charge here also very reasonable!!! Only downside is when I called in to make an appointment, the lady with whom I was talking to on the phone kept asking about insurance information that I had provided at the beginning of our conversation! And they asked about it again when I came to my appointment!

I called the clinic where Dr. Hayley Nguyen practices, explained our situation, and the staff kindly told us to come in and that Dr. Nguyen would see her. From the moment we arrived, Dr. Nguyen and her staff were very professional, friendly, and caring. Dr. Nguyen knew that we were from out of town and even took the time to recommend several restaurants for us to try while we were in Houston. That personal touch meant a lot to us during a stressful time. We are very thankful for the care and kindness we received. When I was shopping for a new Family Practitioner in town, I looked for recs from my other…read morephysicians and Dr. Posey's name came up. There are a few things I look for when I'm researching for a medical professional. First, I look up credentials (no brainer there) and Dr. Posey just happened to have graduated from my alma mater albeit many moons before me. Second, I look up any ratings available online or any personal recommendations from other patients and/or doctors. Finally, the ease, efficiency and politeness of their front office staff. Nothing's worse than trying to get an appointment or a simple question answered with a staff that's rude and incompetent. Thankfully, Associates in Medicine (which Dr. Posey is a part of) has a very pleasant and efficient staff. There are many things I love about going to an "old school" doctor. Dr. Posey isn't a young man (in fact, he reminds me of my grandfather) but his knowledge is broad and he is impeccably thorough in his examinations. In one of his initial thorough examinations, I found out I had mitral valve prolapse which had gone undiagnosed by my former physician for 20+ years. Dr. Posey listened to my heart sounds in all the correct positions while sitting up as well as had me turn to my left side while supine so the heart could be in a more anterior position to hear the "click" of my inefficient valve more clearly. I think I've only EVER done that in school and have never actually seen it in practice. I also had an EKG done (other issues with my heart) which, again, my original physician never did. He also did neuro checks which many, many physicians would skip in a young, seemingly healthy patient like myself. Overall, Dr. Posey requests a full physical exam once a year in his patients which include blood work (CBC, chemistry, thyroid, cholesterol panel), urinalysis & culture, and a chest x-ray. During my first year being his patient, I declined all the exams (because I was a bad patient and just wanted to be seen for my actual focused problem) but since then I've been compliant because I know Dr. Posey is looking out only for my best interest. Perhaps one of my favorite things about Dr. Posey is his bedside manner. He isn't one of those 5 minute physicians we're all so used to these days. He takes his time to interview you and do your exam to correctly diagnose the problem. And if he doesn't have the answer, he's more than happy to refer you to someone who does (with a personal phone call). Once, when I had to have minor surgery, Dr. Posey arranged my office visit with the surgeon for the following morning by calling the surgeon himself while I waited in one of the exam rooms. When he came back, he handed me a printed copy of my insurance and told me that the surgeon's office was expecting my call and that I was scheduled the next morning for my surgery. When I went to the surgeon's office the following day, apparently, the surgeon doesn't even have morning clinic that day but put me in as a favor to Dr. Posey! I sincerely appreciated that extra little effort. I know how hard it is to find a good physician these days and I feel very fortunate to have stumbled upon such a great doc.

A week into my recovery, the wrap covering my leg from knee to toes began to come loose -- something my doctor said could be carefully re-wrapped, but which would be extremely difficult for me to manage on my own due to the extent of my injuries. I came to OnPoint, expecting to receive a few minutes of basic assistance and was stunned when the clerk conferred with the medical staff and informed me that re-wrapping is "not something they get involved with." When I said that I found it hard to believe they would prefer I go home and attempt this myself rather than offer minimal help, I received only a shrug. Since I can't drive myself -- it is my right ankle that is broken -- I had to arrange to be be taken to AFC Urgent Care on Weslayan, where the staff took a few moments to assess my situation and re-wrapped the loosened area without hesitation. They even invited me to return if the wrap should come loose again before my follow-up appointment. I understand urgent care facilities have limitations, but refusing to spend five minutes assisting a patient with a serious fracture -- particularly one who cannot simply drive herself elsewhere -- reflects poorly on this practice. I won't be returning and wouldn't recommend OnPoint to anyone in a vulnerable sitution.

But seriously, after today's awesome appointment, I knew I had to Yelp her immediately (even though it is midnight and I'm seriously lacking in sleep). After my last debacle with obgyn doctors (ahem), I was more than excited to find a doctor that could get me (a new patient) an appointment within a week of calling. Whoa. Unheard of! The parking is no fun in this area, though I suppose I could've taken the light rail. The parking garage I chose started at $4 for the first half hour which hurt a little. I walked over, found the office easily (though the building really could use a map of some sort to ensure people choose the right tower). The staff was friendly and they got my paperwork done pretty quickly. They had a small waiting room with a tv playing a movie (Rumour Has It, if you're curious). I got there about fifteen minutes early for my 9:30 appointment, but wasn't seen until about 10:15. No biggie since I'm used to waiting much, much longer. When I was seen, the nurse was quick and efficient though not overly friendly. Again, no biggie since I know how many patients they process in a day. What really blew me away was that Dr. Whittier actually took the time to talk to me. Actually talk. And not just about my medical history. I'm not saying that we had a life changing heart to heart, but I we exchanged more words in my one meeting with her than I have with all my previous obgyn experiences put together. The exam was fast and easy and they do their pap smear results over the phone on an automated system (wait, is that too much info for Yelp?) which is fantastic. THEN as I'm leaving, I get a goodie bag. A goodie bag of free stuff! (It was very reminiscent of going to the orthodontist as a teenager.) She actually gave me three months worth of birth control for free! WHAT!?!??!?! Okay, I know it is strange to get excited about medication, but seriously, think about all the co-pays I just saved!!!!!! Yeah, I'm a nerd. But great bedside manner, close to work, AND free stuff?! I'm sold.
