By 3P I was at the shelter doing a meet and greet with my dogs, and filling out paperwork. Darlene, Terrie and Michelle are all top-notch!! They make sure you are legit and that you and your current animals are a good fit with the new animal. These ladies and the other staff I didn't get to meet clearly work very hard at this shelter. It was beautifully maintained and the animals are clearly well cared for. They work with other shelters and Texas Humane Society to rescue dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. If you are looking for a pet, I highly recommend checking here and if you want to help a shelter, your donation couldn't go to a better place! Then we heard about the City of Marble Falls efforts to improve its own public animal shelter. We contacted the main person with the shelter, a police department investigator named Rachel Baldree. Ms. Baldree was very generous with her time, explaining the shelter, its significant budget problems (annual budget from the city of only $2500), its successes (adopting out more dogs than ever this year, at a very low cost to adopters) and its great need for donations for maintenance & repairs. We've visited the shelter. It's extremely basic, but it's the only public resource for strays and animal control dogs & cats. There's a HUGE need for donations for its current improvement plans (a yard & fence, better plumbing, better interior, more kennels, veterinary assistance, etc.). They have a general no-kill policy except for aggressive or very sick animals. If you like to support animal shelters, I can't think of a better place to put your money.

There are so many caring pet rescue groups out there.....no need to respond to one that is voicemail only with a "don't call us, we'll call you" attitude. After spending a couple hours on their detailed application, which also requires references, they contacted me a week later and let me know there were over 30 applications for this particular dog and it was adopted out. I think they need to reconsider their process; one suggestion would be to hold on applicants for dogs with more applications than they can handle efficiently.

I started with a phone interview because I lived in Hutto and it was quite a drive. In fact, the day I went to visit it was raining a lot on those twisty roads to the shelter. When I arrived, Ray let me have some private one-on-one time with a pretty shaggy looking little guy. He was friendly and sweet, with a habit of jumping on furniture. I didn't expect to bring him home that day, but I did! Let's just say I called for a grooming appointment as soon as we left and he spent the trip back fighting to be on my lap. Lynn followed up with us a few weeks after he came home with me, and we were settling in together just fine. Paparazzi didn't have any behavioral or health problems to speak of (still doesn't). I still consider adopting him one of the best decisions I've ever made.
