NINE years ago, Chris did some minor work for us (see my initial review). This time, we had a much bigger project: Building retaining walls and steps on a slope of rock-like clay ground, and re-doing the backyard landscape that was done (by someone else) 20 years ago. After obtaining a few quotes, we made a contract at the beginning of March, with Chris warning us that the timeline was several months away. It took 5 months (!) before starting our project at the beginning of August. The work turned out to be a bit larger than anticipated because we're not able to visualize some aspects until we see them done. So we requested some adjustments here and there. Chris and Julio (the team leader) always listened to our thoughts and made the adjustments happen by suggesting ideas and providing materials. Chris and his team have been working together many years, and they did not mind our participating in the teamwork to create the yard we are happy with. The ground and hot weather were difficult to deal with, but the team worked hard in good spirit to give us something to enjoy & appreciate going forward. A small portion of the project (planting new plants) remains to be done in the Fall. For now, we like the new yard the whole team made for us. read more

Updating my last review when I tried to reach Chris McKoy Landscape again for yet another backyard project. After re-reading my first review and seeing his response (I do appreciate businesses that comment on reviews! It shows they're paying attention and truly care about what is being said about their business.), I figured I'd give them another shot. This time, several years later, for our home now in a different area of town. I contacted Chris via Yelp quotes on Easter Sunday, figuring it was the weekend and I wouldn't get a response till the following day at the earliest. To my surprise, Chris messaged me the same day, wow! Total 180 already from the last experience, great! He left his contact phone number and asked to give him a call. When I did reach out, he kindly reminded me of our last experience, saying he actually did come out to our house (in Natomas) and gave us a quote. I honestly didn't remember that and when he went into further details about our former home, I knew he definitely had been and I had just forgotten. Oops! Another 'my bad' was telling him back then I would update my 1-star review since he had given us a quote and obviously never did. How embarrassing!! So all I could say in reply was maybe I could redeem myself this time around. So, we proceeded to schedule a time for him to come out to our new house for a free estimate. Unfortunately, there was some miscommunication and he showed up on the correct day of the week, but the wrong week. Geez-Louise! My husband let me know Chris had called when he arrived at the house, but because we had it down for the following week, nobody was home. That's when I found out my husband had already been setting up getting estimates from other landscaping companies and felt like we didn't need to reschedule with Chris. I quickly messaged Chris via Yelp and let him know of the mishap, thanking him anyways for the efforts and apologized for the trouble. So here I am, fulfilling my previous promise from years past, to update my bad review. Seems like a decent enough guy to work with though. When it came time to finally tackle the backyard landscaping, I reached out to Chris McKoy to come by for an estimate and to also hear his ideas on what we could do in our (very small) backyard space. My main concern was to find a way to prevent any possible flooding issues that may arise from a strong rainstorm, especially since our backyard is located at the end of a small hill. Chris also shared the same concern, and was super knowledgeable and provided excellent ideas on how to mitigate the potential flooding risk. I also wanted to incorporate a stamped concrete patio area, a strip of artificial turf with additional drainage underneath, and an elevated planter area with irrigation along the back fence. Chris offered the best suggestions and recommendations, and his estimate was very fair and competitive. Although the wait time was around three months (which was made abundantly clear at the time of the estimate and I was totally fine with it), the wait was definitely worth it. Chris and his team did a fantastic job with coordinating all the steps required to complete our backyard, and he did an excellent job communicating with me about his schedule and updated timelines. He was able to work with me to get the exact vision that I wanted for my backyard. In the end, Chris and his crew made sure that I was absolutely happy with everything. We've gotten quite a few compliments from neighbors and passerbys, and I've already recommended Chris to others who were interested in having their backyards landscaped as well. read more

For low maintenance, a gardener recommended walk-on bark. It was fine until I got a puppy who decided the bark was great to chew on and do "The Zoomies" on! What a mess he created. So I called several landscapers and found Chris who bid the whole job, not just the labor (you buy the material) or partial job (yeah, we can fix the drip system). Chris reinstalled the drip so now my trees aren't wilting. And the guys cleaned up after every day. Could not be happier. And he was the most reasonably priced. Having him do my front yard now. Not only did Chris offer a great price for my whole backyard, but he was very quick in completing my backyard and quick to respond when I had a question. From what I remember, I think my backyard was done a little over one week. His team of workers were also professional and didn't leave any mess behind when they were doing their job. There was one corner area where the cement was cracked and Chris was very professional about it. Recently finished a front yard renovation with Chris and couldn't be happier about the process from start to finish. Contacted Chris to renovate our entire front yard based on an existing landscape plan. He reviewed the plan then took about 2-3 weeks to electronically, by email, submit a proposal. We accepted his proposal by email and clarified one question all in early November 2020. He did not followup with a contract, request for deposit, or provide a potential start date. After we accepted his offer we never heard from Chris again. Not exactly the best way to do business or build client relationships. read more

He was extremely profesional and helpful throughout the entire project. They installed new concrete patio and stepping stones, new plants, mulch, rock, sod, irrigation, lighting, posts and a new electrical outlet. Sacramento seems to have a shortage of landscapers who actually want your business. Chris McKoy Landscape was probably the 12th one I contacted for a quote, and only the 2nd one to respond. I understand it's a busy time of year, but at least have the decency to call back and say you can't bid new jobs. I digress. I got a call back the same day I asked for an estimate. There is no fee for the estimate, but work would not begin for 12 weeks. He sounded very busy on the telephone, and I told him that I've had trouble even reaching other landscapers and understood if he did not want to take on new clients. He assured me everything would be OK, and we set up an appointment at 9:30am on a Friday. Both my wife and I are eager to have our yard functioning and looking great again, so we took vacation time in the morning to meet with him. At 8:40 am I missed a call from him. The garbled voicemail (calling while driving?) said he would not be able to make the 9:30 appointment that he previously assured me would be no problem. Hard to understand, but sounded like he was held up at a work site. "This afternoon should work" was the end of it. I didn't bother calling back. Nothing is worse than being stood up, am I right? Scheduling and keeping an appointment is not hard. It's a practice you should master if you want your business to succeed. We wasted 8 hours of vacation time between the two of us, incorrectly assuming that he would show on time as promised. Since I don't have any intention of continuing a business relationship that started so badly, I will not be using this contractor. If there's an opposite of recommending them, consider this review me doing the opposite. read more

After talking to a few other landscapers, I went with Chris McKoy to construct/install my new large planter box because his price was fair (and a little lower than the others), his idea for my project was better thought out than others and when I met him for the estimate he was much friendlier and a much better communicator - he actually listened to what I wanted. They started right at 7:00 a.m. like he said they would. While I was away at work, there was an issue of them needing an electrical outlet to recharge their power tools. Minor issue, whose solution was tactless (plugging into a neighbor's house) and I was definitely irritated by it. However, when I returned home and saw what an absolutely top-notch job they had done, I was ready to sing their praises again. Chris McKoy does truly fantastic work. He's very responsible (took ownership of the error), very free with communication (kept me up-to-date with things via text message), created a beautiful just-as-I-had-imagined-it-to-look planter box, kept everything looking great - redistributed the wood chips, watered everything once he was done (even coiled the hose when we usually leave it messily in a heap) and made my house look so much nicer. He was upfront and told me he wouldn't be able to assist me for a few months and gave me the number of someone else that could help - Tim. Tim was also awesome - got back to me right away, came out a few days later, and also was honest and upfront explaining that it wasn't worth him to do the work and told us what we could do to correct our issue ourselves. He came right over the next day to look at our front yard and sent me a quote that night. He provided additional design ideas that really improved the overall results and didn't increase the cost of the work. After providing a thorough estimate, he put no pressure on us to make a decision and after selecting him for the job he was able to perform the work the very same week. I called Chris to see if he could come out to my house for an estimate on building a deck. I gave him rough measurement over the phone and he gave me an approx estimate of $22,000!! I had never had a deck built before so I really did not know what to expect. I got 2 more (on site) estimates of 6 & 8 thousand. Without telling them who gave me my first estimate, they both laughed and said "sounds like he doesn't want the job". I'm still wondering why a business man would shock a potential client out of a job without even coming over. Not a good way to start a business relationship. read more
