I asked for irrigation companies to work at my home. Fantascape and Jon responded, came to my house, and gave me a quote. When I asked when he could start the work, he gave me several days hence. I accepted his bid and wanted to confirm the work to be done. He said he'd let me know shortly when he could stop by. That was the last I ever heard from him. If he had said that, for whatever reason he could no longer do the work, no problemo. We'd both move on. But he didn't and honestly, I just think people who don't keep their word are not worth giving anything more than a 1 out 5. But that's just me. read more

I recently converted my front lawn to native landscape thanks to the City of Sacramento rebate. I interviewed 4 different companies and ended up with Fantasyscape - while they were not the lowest (nor the highest quote), i liked they understood what I was looking for and was able to do all the work (one company required me to purchase my own plants). The work they did for me included: Demo and hauled all the existing grass/sod; converting irrigation to drip, putting in a weed fabric barrier, planting drought tolerant plants and setting the drip irrigation timer for me. I hired a different company for the landscape design. Jon, the owner, and his crew were great to work with, and especially Tony was super hard working! Overall, took them about 2 weeks to finish as they had other jobs that pulled them away. I was really pleased with how my yard turned out and excited to see it blossom in the spring/summer. The owner, Jon, was very responsive at first when I asked for a quote on some landscaping design/work for my front yard, as well as concrete work for my backyard. He looked at my yards, and said he would provide some designs, and get back to me in a couple of days with a quote. It's now almost a month later. No response from him, even after my attempts to contact him multiple times on his phone and social media business page. He just ghosted on me. If he does good work, I wouldn't know it. If you're too busy for the job, or don't want to do it because it's not worth your time, just say so. Don't leave people hanging. read more

Amazing experience hiring Jon and Fantasyscapes Inc. I called to get a few quotes from different contractors to landscape my back yard, fix the drainage issues, install turf, and replace a patio. After talking and getting a quote from Jon I knew who to hire as he answered all my questions, didn't try to up sale, and was very competitively priced for the job I needed done. He was able to start very quickly and despite the weather and the whole virus catastrophe that happened to our country, he still got the job done in a reasonable amount of time. Horrible! My boyfriend had his front lawn done and they left him patches. He has been trying to get them to come back to fix the patches and have been told they would return 3 different times and have failed to do so! Do not do business with them! Jon and his crew did an amazing job on our backyard. They did a complete rip out and installed new sod, adjusted our sprinklers and installed a new drip system, planted trees, plants, added a mow curb and finished it off with lighting. His price was far less than the competition and the work was amazing. He also didn't charge me extra when I decided that I wanted a small section of concrete poured in the walkway down to the lawn as they were already pouring concrete for the mow curb or when at the last minute, I decided to go buy some more plants than what was in the contract. Last spring we decided it was time to make our fantastic backyard more fantastic-er. Little did we know how hard it would be to find someone competent enough to help. We had at least a month wasted by people either ghosting us or just royally screwing around with us (see my single one-star review). Then we met Jon. He came across as very confident and fun. He had great ideas and was able to help us visualize what we wanted. We were totally gun-shy at this point and fully expected him to disappear. To our surprise he showed up when he said he would, with his crew, ready to work. The crew is great, by the way. Really lovely people. Especially his strong right arm, his sister, SARAH. Full disclosure here, we were having them do this project during a very busy and, because of the pandemic, tumultuous time. Communication wasn't always consistent and other jobs would pull them away from ours at times. We got a bit nervous here and there but then Jon would show up, twinkle in his eye, and make us feel better. Seriously, we were just happy to see good progress. Also, we kept coming up with new ideas and adding them in which lengthened the time-frame. So, what did we have them do? I'll tell ya....custom outdoor kitchen island, stain deck, add custom skirt to deck, custom firewood shed, re-do border of deck with DG and paving stones, 4 custom planter boxes for new trees, lay new sod over entire yard, and finally install/upgrade irrigation system. A neighbor recommended Fantasy Scapes after two 8' sections of common fence collapsed. The business may engage in numerous construction endeavors, but fence building is apparently outside of their field of expertise. The fence they constructed would best be described as "amateur" and "unacceptable." For example, one of the 4" X 4" posts was over 3 inches out of plumb. Following that debacle, the framing was unevenly spaced, then they topped it off by installing dog-eared boards even though, had they looked at the other 300-plus feet of fencing, they might have noticed that there were no other dog-eared boards to be found. I suppose we may have gotten the least experienced crew Fantasy Scapes has to offer, or perhaps the marijuana they smoked during the construction negatively affected the quality of their work. Consider this post a "Buyer Beware" advisory. The original job was so inferior that the owner had a crew come back out and remove the dog-eared fence boards & reset the fence post that was 3+ inches out of plumb. And yet, after that, we have a fence that is so inferior, I am going to remove every fence board & reset the framing so it corresponds to the other 300+ feet of fencing. Fixing their inferior work will likely result in Fantasy Scapes & me meeting again in Small Claims Court over their exorbitant $1700.00 cost for such inferior work. If you are not too concerned about quality fence construction, then Fantasy Scapes is the company to call. On the other hand, if you value & appreciate quality fence-building craftsmanship, then you might not want to call this business. read more

Too often I use this platform to tell of issues or concerns I've had and not often enough do I get a chance to rave about someones work on what is my largest life investment... My home. I used Fantasyscapes to do some work at my home and I couldnt be happier with not just the outcome or the people that were at my home but rather in total with every aspect of this experience from start to finish. We did some concrete (about 20 yards) and these individuals were professional, dedicated to the outcome and committed to making my happiness a number one priority. In a time where companies forget who the customer is Jon (the owner) made me feel as if nothing mattered but me. And when we had a major crisis (to a lame person like myself) Jon giggled (politely) and explained how this isn't a problem, then made everything right again. (Like the 3 year old neighbor girl that ran across my fresh concrete ruining everything in my mind) It took them 4 seconds to fix it and make everything right again. fine I'm a rube, I'll own that. I interviewed 5 contractors for our backyard project. It was a relatively large undertaking as we have a big yard that needed a lot of demo, including removal of a small old pool and waterfall, lots of old growth trees and shrubs to be taken out, and all new irrigation and lighting. Upon meeting Jon, I liked him immediately--he is straightforward, easy to talk to, and understood what we wanted for our yard. My wife and I were dreading remodeling our front and back yards. It felt like such a huge undertaking. We were originally thinking of hiring our own subcontractors and doing it ourselves, but with young kids and full time jobs, we decided we needed to bring in a contractor who could manage the whole project. We contacted over half a dozen different companies and had them come out to give us quotes. After interviewing them, it was very clear that some really knew their stuff, while others were just winging it as they went along and telling us what we wanted to hear. We really wanted to find someone that we both felt very comfortable communicating with. Not only was Jon one of the nicest contractors we met with, he really listened to what we wanted and made sure he understood before we got started. (Extra Bonus: he was also one of the most reasonably priced) From the get go, we were impressed with Jon's responsiveness, professionalism, flexibility, and knowledge. He showed up on time, and was understanding of our toddlers following us around and interrupting since he has young kids of his own. It was clear that he knows a lot from the suggestions he made for our yard. He was happy to answer any questions we had along the way, and was not pushy at all. He was willing to work with our timeline (we got quotes before we had our baby and scheduled the work to be done after her arrival) and let us know what to expect along the way. Fantasyscapes just finished taking our front yard in Folsom from a mix of dirt and bushes to something we can be proud of. Jon and his crew, Freddy and Poncho, worked with us every step of the way to turn our basic ideas in to a beautiful reality. We originally sought estimates from several companies. While most were similar, only differing by $1-2k, a big name local company came in at double the cost! After meeting with everyone, and reviewing the estimates, we both agreed Jon was our guy, and he didn't disappoint. We had a general idea of what we thought we wanted. Jon filled in some of the details with his vision of what he felt might compliment our goals, and added his own ideas. With each suggestion we knew we'd made the right decision. He and his hard working team actually started on a Saturday, and worked the following Monday, which was a holiday, to take advantage of the good weather. I don't think I've ever seen that on any home improvement project we've had. On day one, the demo and hauling was completed. Day two was the irrigation modification and drainage. The plants were delivered that afternoon. Day three was the planting and the lights. They worked so fast we hadn't yet picked out the flagstone or decorative rock. One more day brought the completion of the path, decorative rock, "boulders" and bark. Throughout the project, Jon and his crew worked right alongside us to achieve the agreed upon vision. Any questions or concerns we had were addressed immediately. When asked for his opinion, Jon responded quickly, and he often provided several options, while also sharing what he felt might look best. Our yard came together beautifully, and quicker than we expected. The combination of plants, decorative rock and bark looks amazing. The dry river bed, mounding, flagstone path and boulders tie it all together and provides perspective. The yard is now completely converted to a drip system, which will save us money going forward. Amazing Transformation Of Our Backyard! My husband and I were tired of looking at the neglected corner of our backyard. We had some old fruit trees and ivy removed a while back, but now the ivy was coming back. It looked terrible. We decided to look for landscapers, since something need to be done and we wanted a more drought-tolerant landscape installed. I started to call landscapers that I found here on Yelp. One of them had a recording that said it would be a month before they could even schedule an appointment and the price of their services STARTED at $5k. We were disappointed and thought that there was no way we could afford to make our yard look any better. Then I found JDB's Custom Landscape and Construction. I called andJon Brown, the owner of the company, made an appointment with us for THAT DAY! I quickly went online and searched for pictures of the kind of landscape ideas that we liked. I printed out a few pictures and we were set. Jon arrived on time for our appointment and was very knowledgeable, warm and had a great attitude. We showed him the sad backyard corner, he listened to us and we showed him pictures of the landscape ideas we printed out. We really liked the Asian-inspired style. He took some measurements and gave us his estimate. Plants, bark, an irrigation system, decomposed granite for a path, a dry riverbed, and even a small Meyer lemon tree! The cost seemed very reasonable for all that work. We agreed to it, and he and his crew started the work within a week or so. The work was done in 3 days! We were floored. The neglected corner was now a beautiful Asian garden! Jon and his team's work exceeded our expectations in every way. So much so, that we decided to get the other side of our backyard landscaped as well. The second job went as smoothly as the first and we are ecstatic about how our yard looks. I stumbled across Fantasyscapes, Inc. here on Yelp while looking up reviews for three other Landscaping companies that we were considering. I was impressed by the glowing reviews for Fantasyscapes, and liked a number of photos I saw here and on their other social media accounts so added them to our list - and am I ever thankful I did! Jon responded within 15 minutes of me requesting a "quote"/info through Yelp! . He was the first landscaper we met with, and right away my husband and I got a really good vibe from Jon and hit it off. Our yard was overgrown and unruly, and we couldn't maintain it anymore. We weren't exactly sure what we wanted, but we knew we wanted to go as maintenance free as possible, and let him know our short list of things we wanted and liked, and our budget. Jon immediately had an idea of what to do, explained it to us, and we both thought it sounded great. He left saying he'd get us the priced out quote later that night, and he was true to his word! Late that night his quote arrived, and we thought his numbers looked very reasonable. Those other three companies? One said they were reducing their service area and wouldn't take our job because we were too far away, one never returned our calls, and the third FINALLY returned our call A MONTH LATER, scheduled an appointment to come out (a date/time THEY wanted, I was flexible) and then NEVER SHOWED! We knew we should have gotten another quote just to compare prices, but honestly we had such a good response from Jon, his numbers looked reasonable to us and were within budget, his review track record was pretty stellar (and well deserved!), and we were fed up with others simply not coming through at all, so we bit the bullet and gave Fantasyscapes the go ahead. Fast forward four months due to Fantasyscapes having a full work schedule, scheduling issues on our end as well, and a down pour of Real Life throwing both sides a bunch of bad luck curve balls. Any time I had a question or wanted to touch base during those four months, Jon always got back to me in short order. And as the Winter rains started moving in, I was getting worried our front yard wouldn't get done before the year's end. Jon told me not to worry, his crew would get it knocked out in a couple of days. I had my doubts as we had a bunch of overgrown bushes, a couple small trees, and left over sprawling roots from a large tree we had removed four years prior, but once again Jon would be true to his word! A couple of days before work began I met Jon at the rock yard and picked out the boulders for my yard, and got visual confirmation of the rock base and cobblestones he had planned on using, to make sure I was ok with it all - a step I really appreciated as I was having trouble trying to picture in my mind how it would all look. When the weather finally gave us a break last week, Jon's crew, Freddie and Poncho, arrived bright and early, and as promised knocked out the front yard in 2 days! A special shout out to Freddie and Poncho who were absolute rock stars! Honest hard workers who performed some minor miracles removing trees, roots, and moving boulders. They obviously take great pride in their work, were neat and courteous, and I look forward to them coming back to work on my back yard! As you can see from my attached photos, they did a magnificent job on my front yard. My husband and I are over the moon happy and excited with how this project turned out! We worked with Jon and his crews to install much needed yard drainage in our front yard and a channel drain adjacent to our house. We had a fantastic experience from beginning to end working work Jon and his crews. Jon recommended a few great ideas to not only address our current drainage issues, but also a few ideas to install a few extras to address future issues. Like most companies they are extremely busy but Jon always responded within a day to answer any questions we had, his crews were hard workers and very approachable and they stayed on schedule and budget despite some very difficult digging conditions (i.e. roots, hard pan, etc). I rarely post reviews but experience a big RED FLAG I think prospects should know. We tried to hire Fantasycapes because of the good reviews but it was a bust. After wasting weeks of our time working with Jon, who seemed like a nice guy, HE backed out because we asked too many questions like could we get plants during the pandemic. Really? We're spending $11,000 and we can't ask if the plants we'd like are going to be available BEFORE you dig up the yard? And then when he said he wasn't sure he could get plants, why did he say he could get our yard done in a week? We also asked "bad" questions like details on the lighting plan and plant sizes so we'd be on the same page. Twice, he said he was going to send pics of some stone he recommended that was in his own yard. Didn't send the pics. So we asked again- nicely. I guess that was too much for him, too. We just wanted to see what the rocks looked like before we told him to buy them. That seemed reasonable. I'm not sure what his problem was, but I'm VERY skeptical of any contractor who acts like this. Seems like he just wants clients who will go with the program...whatever that is for him. I guess we don't roll that way. If we're going to spent our money, we'd like to know basically what to expect before we start. There's so many bad contractors out there. It seems like the good ones shouldn't mind making customers comfortable. We were asking basic landscaping questions - stuff we don't know since we've never done this before. And it's not like he's offering his services at a big discount. His pricing is on the higher end. I don't know, maybe that's just us, but it seems like making sure everyone's on the same page is beneficial for both sides. In this case, feels like Buyer Beware! BONUS- in the original meeting for a quote, we asked for a small screen or faux wall to hide our old hot tub. He said no problem and would give us web links for ideas. He sent us a links to Glass Sunrooms and Gazebos. What?! Also asked for a mock light post to go around and hide some ugly pipes. Again, he said no problem and sent a web link. The link was to a party store with an INDOOR light post, complete with indoor cord, that is far to narrow to cover anything, let along be used to go around the pipes. What??!! Other reviewers said he listened very well. We didn't have that experience. Note to Jon's comment... We didn't ask for a quote in a week. He first came out to our property on 4/29/20 and he told us he'd have a quote in a few days. Received final quote, after back and forth, on 5/11/20. His reference to delays due to the pandemic was only AFTER we our final questions. He's trying to spin it to sound like we were unreasonable and it's all the pandemic. We've been nothing but nice. I have held off writing this review as I was hopeful that Jon would have some level of responsibility and followthrough, but I am ready to give up and move on... chalk this up to a lesson learned. Pro's: Jon comes across as a really nice guy, and I believe that he is. The bid was fair, the enthusiasm was present, some of the work was good... specifically the new retaining wall around a tree, a small flagstone patio space, and some new sod placement. The path for my dogs along the back fence has been very helpful as well. The outdoor shower installation was originally set for someone about 5'5" tall (I am a much taller than that), but this was corrected months after completion by raising it, and I have really enjoyed having it. I wish the pipes were a little better placed, but that was not sorted out prior so there were no clear expectations about what that would look like going into it. Functional, could be more visually pleasing. I am adding this to the Pro's as it is one thing that actually followed through on and fixed (raised the shower head) despite it being installed quite low at the beginning. Con's: TERRIBLE followthrough. "new" drip system and sprinkler work on plants not working. Promise for a new system, application based, never happened. They tied into the old system, and despite several requests to at least get the system working so I don't have to hand water 1/3 of my yard has fallen on deaf ears. Drip system conversion was not done on where there were old risers in some areas, which is fine, I can live with that but it is an example of work offered and not done. The promise for "brick repair" on existing flower beds were not completed, and in some areas there were just a couple of stacked rocks in its place. It is so bad, it is the laugh of the neighborhood (Picture attached). Couple this with adding new landscape lights but not removing the old ones, and only after the work was complete telling me he could not remove them, again, sloppy and a bit misleading (tell me before if you can't remove old landscape lights and I will get them removed before all the rest of the landscape is installed). We discussed softening up the landscape in the back yard by planting some low ground cover around the larger boulders at the cement decking edge around the perimeter of the back yard to break up the cement hardscape that was already there, confirmed when he was sending picture of plants that this was the plan, and the result was more hardscape (all rock) with just a couple taller plants here and there (which are not thriving) with absolutely no ground cover. Again, it doesn't look bad, and I brought this up to Jon after the rock was placed. He asked to give it a season of growth as the new plants there would fill in and will accomplish that goal. It doesn't look bad, just not what was agreed upon, and will likely end up replacing the rock with ground cover next season if the current plants don't drastically improve with growth and appeal. There is more (e.g. bringing in an arborist to trim tree(s) was offered - not done), but you get the idea. I am more than 6 months out from "completion" of this project, and am now needing to hire someone else to come fix all the things that Jon never followed through on, or try to fix them myself. My bad for actually paying for his services in full prior to having this work truly completed. They are little things for the most part, but a lot of little things. If you decide to work with Jon, get everything in writing... every little thing, and don't pay until the work is done as agreed upon. Some of the work is really good, but there are a lot of little false promises as he walks the property and sells the job to you, which will never get done. He has not been very responsive by text, and his follow-through has been horrible, so a high degree of patience is essential. Retaining walls, flagstone patio, sod installation, very good and I would recommend him for the quality of that work. Attached are two pictures I sent to Jon last November. Jon the owner was professional, but so genuine. Just had a good vibe about him & it proved to be right on. I had a plans done by AJM (also recommend) for a complete makeover of my front yard. My experience with Jon was overall very good. As indicated in other reviews, there were a handful of items that probably fell into the "over promise, under deliver" bucket but they were ultimately acceptable and if I'd put more energy into communicating them to Jon he would've been responsive. I can't rate his work because he never did any work for us. He did meet with us, and gave us a quote we liked Jon and we wanted to move forward. And at that point he asked that we keep him posted on the timeline (we were building a pool) when we got to the point where we needed him there was no follow through. A lot of empty promises- "I'll call you today, tomorrow, this week". But never got a call, just a texting runaround. I was hounding him down for a 30k+ job that i guess he didn't really want. I just wish he just would have been up front if he couldn't do the job or want the job cause we were really relying on him and now I'm scrambling for a new landscaper, and everyone is backed up. We just really got o it hopes up that he was our guy but in the end it was a huge waste of time. read more

We called around to a TON of companies for estimates for a retaining wall for our backyard. We were given insanely high estimates for a concrete or stone wall. We decided to just do a wood retaining wall because no company was anywhere near our budget for the project. I found Fantasyscapes and Jon the business owner came out for a consultation. He talked to us about different options that would work with what we could spend. We were able to do a keystone block retaining wall with drainage and stay within our budget. He was a pleasure to talk to and communicate with about the project. Update: Jon, owner, reached out to me by phone today. He said that he looked back into his email records and saw that we had attempted to contact him by email after the bid came which we thought was incomplete. He said he now realizes that during that time he had been ill with a temporary health problem, that although temporary, was still significant enough to require hospitalization. In his absence, his staff was covering but not monitoring the email. He apologized, sounding sincere and accepting responsibility for the breakdown in communication. He said he understands why we moved on with our project with another company, and wishes us well. In light of this, when we have more landscaping updating to do, I would be willing to try again with Fantasyscapes. He came close to getting recent work even without a competing bid. We were that impressed with him at the time of the bid discussion July 2021. At no point did Jon ask me to revise or delete my earlier Yelp review. read more

After my first meeting with Jon, I had a good vibe. So much so that I stopped getting any more estimates from other landscapers. Glad I went with my instinct because Jon did not disappoint. He is very personable, honest, fair on pricing, and he knows his stuff. He came up with a design which included sod, rock, drought tolerant plants, a scattered stone path, a decomposed granite path, and irrigation repair. He kept me in the loop throughout the process and texted me pics of plant and stone options to make sure I was happy with the choices. No eyeball rolls either when I asked for a couple of add-ons to the project. He said "no problem" without any hesitation. On top of all that, I was shocked (in a good way) when some low voltage lights were installed for free! Yep, you heard me right. Who or what company does such gestures these days?!?!??? Thank you Jon for being so kind, understanding and for creating beautiful scenery for my mother to view from her window! Special shout out to the crew!!! John was super professional and friendly and helped us out with ideas in areas we weren't sure about, while keeping us within our budget. He never skipped a beat. The project day came and John accompanied the crew to my house, met with me and the crew and made sure the plan was clear for everyone. I cannot Express what an amazing work ethic these guys showed. Their attention to and respect of my property and yard ornaments and such was above and beyond. They kept everything so clean. Avoiding getting my pool dirty and even placing all ornaments in place before leaving each night. Total job was 3 days and my yard is PERFECT. We got everything we expected with top notch service.
