Every time I happen to be walking down Fillmore and Choux is open I buy several vanilla cream puffs. They come in many different flavors. These are the best cream puffs I have ever eaten. They are better than the cream puffs I ate in Paris. This place is small and unassuming and it would be easy to walk past and not even notice the bakery. Even though it is located in the lower Haight at Fillmore Street they are a class act. Meh.... I really wanted to love this place but was left contemplating if it was worth the extra calories and dinero. I decided to give a special treat to my sister on her birthday. Drove into the city and bought one of each flavor of the cream puffs and financiers, and a cannele for my sister and a couple extra for myself to taste. Spent over $50. The cream puffs were very pretty in the box and I must say it was a nice presentation. Unfortunately, it was like going on a date with a beautiful person only to find out they have no substance or thoughts in their head. We had a hard time determining the cream puff flavors because most of them were pretty mild and somewhat bland. They all tasted similar except for the chocolate which was easily distinguishable. The financiers were better in my opinion but still not something that I would be willing to travel into the city for. If you are in the neighborhood, pick up one or two. They are beautiful and taste fine but you will probably pass on a second date. Definitely don't drive 35 minutes into the city and spend $50+ like I did. read more

This is a small bakery nestled in Lower Haight. So if you don't live in the neighborhood or drive, it's going to be a bit of a journey to get here (walking or public transportation). There is no seating inside and not much place to stand - it's literally an order and go kind of establishment. A Choux ("shoo") is like the cream puff version of a French macaron. It's dense in flavor and goes great with your morning tea or coffee. It's not like Beard Papas... well maybe the crunchy exterior is similar. I ordered a box of 4 Choux ($11) - 1 regular and 3 seasonal flavors. Hazelnut (regular flavor) - tasted like hazelnut and was pretty good. Candy apple (seasonal) - did taste like the candy apple lollipop. The top part is like a crunchy hard candy which was a pleasant surprise. I was really impressed with the presentation and design. Peanut butter chocolate cream puff (seasonal) - fell a little short for me. I ate this one a few hours after I left the bakery, and when I tried it, I noticed it was a little sour. I don't know if that's how they make it or if time played a factor. I also didn't like the thickness of the peanut butter cream but that's just a personal preference. Pumpkin (seasonal) - really good! I usually don't like pumpkin flavored desserts but this is the exception. I came around 3-4 PM, and most of their flavors were sold out. So I would advise to come earlier in the day. The variety wasn't as colorful as I expected (their Instagram had some blue, green, or purple toppings). So I guess those were just seasonal flavors. Beautiful presentation with lovely elegant touches ; a tiny meringue on top of the lemon choux, a chocolate medallion on the raspberry make eating these a whole sequence of experiences. Not overly sweet at all; the lemon is actually deeply delightfully tart. So this is much more the sort of pastry I'd expect to encounter in France as opposed to the US. Staff are lovely and helpful. I just tried the salted caramel one. I love it. It's not that sweet. And unlike beard papa, this one doesn't have that much cream inside which is good because i don't like that much cream. The texture outside is crispy and firm. The reason I gave it 3 star is because of the service. The server doesn't seem happy and patient. I asked her for suggestion. She was like everything here is good... When I was about to leave, there was a lady taking picture on a small table(where it has six puffs), I thought she's also a customer, so I went ahead taking pictures too. But it turns out that she works there and she was taking picture for their instagram page. I am often too lazy to write any yelp reviews. But this place is so wonderful that I feel obligated to share. I learned about this place thru the FB ad. Then checked yelp reviews. Saw some negative reviews so didn't have much expectations. But I am so glad that I still gave it a try myself!! The pâtes de fruit bag in Raspberry Lychee flavor is wonderful. It is sweet but not too sweet like those American candies. The texture is perfectly made and very chewy!! Much better than the ones fr Gary Danko. The Canelés is extraordinarily good and authentic! The outside has the great caramelized crunchiness of course and the inside is soft and chewy!!  The subtle aroma of rum is amazing too! In all, this is just like how I had it fr France! The box of 4 financiers is as well authentic and amazingly fresh and delicious!!!  We ordered the weekend box, plus a box of 4 caneles and another box of 4 financiers. The lady (believe to be the pastry chef and boss) was so sweet that given me two boxes of WARM caneles and financiers, while the weekend box is cold and taken out from the fridge since it has creme puffs inside. We live pretty far away, so this is a perfect arrangement since we can enjoy some of them in warmth and in ¨freshly baked¨ perfect temperature condition, even though believed they have been made and done in the morning time!! Guess they have kept it warm somehow. It was a hot day w/ heatwave, and believe this is why they are especially good in the baking perspective. Furthermore, even I enjoy them the next day, I put the Caneles and Financiers in the microwave for about 15 seconds, they still taste as fresh as if coming right out of the oven. And we did try the ones that came out from the fridge, we would highly discourage that, as you won't be able to taste the authentic Frenchy textures! So happened the lady came out loading stuff in her car for the delivery service and I was in mine right behind her.  I gave her the gestures that they are super yum!! She came to me and said ¨you made my day." But she didn't know sheś the one who made our day memorable w/ my husband and I on our 14th-anniversary date!  (Do hope she can read this here!!! Please don't lose heart and continue with this high quality of arts, works, and services!! Because my family and I could hardly find any high-quality French pastries in the US!!!) Side note: To make this review a higher validity, do want to say I am not a big fan of the cream puffs though, because of the cream and my personal preference. Man, the second my friend and I walked in here, it smelled amazing! My friend and I didn't know what to get because everything looked and smelled so good! It is a little pricey but I think it is worth it if you get the ones you liked. I love how much cream they put in each puff. My friend and I loved the salted caramel cream puff. It tasted like caramel but sweet like dulce de leche. I tried the salted Carmel, hazelnut, vanilla, and chocolate raspberry cream puff. My friend got taro, raspberry, salted caramel, and chocolate. We both agreed that our favorite was the salted Carmel, but I also enjoyed the hazelnut cream puff. The vanilla and chocolate raspberry I could probably pass next time to try another flavor or get another salted caramel and hazelnut. This place is truly. A warning should be at the front door, because once you enter this will be a place you will never want to leave. All of the gourmet French cream puffs are named after a person in the baker's life and they are extremely unique. The level of perfection and quality that these puffs hold is impeccable, and Choux has truly created the new trend. The next "macaron" perhaps, but completely different. This is not your average cream puff, and everything about Choux screams that. You become a bit wary after seeing the price sign, but after looking at the delicate handiwork and seeing the amount of labor that goes into each and every single cream puff [they make them in shop] makes you realize that you would be willing to pay double for each one. (or at least I would!) The six box deal is great, where it is buy five get one free [$2.80 each] and you get to sample some of their quirky flavors. The selection is pretty vast, enough to get two boxes with a single flavor of each I would say so from what I remember, so I'm mad at myself that I didn't get more. The flavors are so exquisite and delicate, that for a moment you are swept away in a cream puff dream land where everything is beautiful, delicious, and happy. This is how this place makes me feel. My boyfriend was just as excited as me, while we sat there trying each flavor one by one, trying to get the bigger bite, savoring every single second of the heavenly goodness. The Meyer Lemon and the Mint were the standouts flavor wise, but the PassionFruit with the candy coating and silver star sprinkles was my favorite all around because I have never seen or tried anything like it. This place is here to stay, they aren't going anywhere and I expect a few more locations to pop up soon.
