Served with a side of homemade slaw & a bottle of water, it was just slightly overpriced. Considering it's in the heart of Vieux Montréal, right on the waterfront, it's a good deal.

We ordered the smoked meat trio and the poutine with smoked meat. The smoked meat trio includes a sandwich, cole slaw, and water. I've never had Canadian smoked meat before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought it would be a lot smokier, but I'm glad it wasn't. It reminded me of NYC corned beef sammies. The poutine with the smoked meat was also great. This was definitely enough food for two people, especially since the poutine is so heavy. We actually thought we ordered the smoked meat plate, which includes all of the items from the trio, plus a pickle and more french fries. When we asked them about it, we realized that we probably just ordered the wrong thing. However, they brought us out some extra fries (which we definitely didn't need), but it was really nice of them to do so. It was a nice textural change from the gravy-soaked fries we had been eating. Overall, it was a great meal - but definitely not something that I could eat that often.

If you get the regular, be aware it will be very spicy, even mild was too spicy for most of my friends. I liked the tomato broth personally, not spicy and kinda sweet. They charge you for the weight of the ingredients you picked plus if you got any additional meat. The bowls are huge so you could definitely get one to share. The skewers are all very good but they can be a it over-seasoned and small so keep that in mind as well. I got the cheese corn on the side as well and it was just ok, the cheese was a bit cold by the time I got my food and so it was more a crust than a pull. The service is great and they accommodated a large group on a monday night. A bit slow to get the food since they had 8 soups to make with a bunch of skewers but that's our fault for ordering so much!

On the outside, this place might look like a tourist trap, but locals and families coming here…read moresince 1954 will tell you there's a reason it's called the King of Smoked Meat! It's a family-owned institution that serves up warmth, tradition and is famous for pizza, smoked meat, seafood, grilled meats, salads, desserts, cheesecake, and more. Open late when most other places are closed, it's an unpretentious diner where my friends and I were glad to share some laughs, jokes with the waitstaff, and good food. We couldn't decide on what to order, so we defaulted to a poutine and a smoked meat platter with extra coleslaw. It felt like being in one of those late night diners with a large menu with lots of choices. The poutine didn't make the honour roll; it didn't fail, but I'd say it was decent and it passed. The smoked meat coming in as the valedictorian was not surprising since it's the namesake of the place. My friends prefer their smoked meat with a little bit of melt-in-your-mouth fat whereas I prefer it lean. Our waitress was kind enough to put both buttery, fatty and lean pieces on the platter so we were all happy. There was mustard ready to go at our booth table, we were ready to slather it on the rye bread. The smoked meat was warm, tender, tasty and delicious! The coleslaw also was good too with a good amount of sourness and garlic flavour. It's an alternative to Lester's, Snowdon Deli, or Schwartz's. I'd definitely return for the cozy ambiance and smoked meat.

Some restaurants are famous for a reason, and Schwartz's is absolutely one of them!…read more After reading about Schwartz's in the Michelin Guide, we knew we had to make a stop during our time in Montréal. The moment we walked in, we were greeted, seated, and asked if it was our first visit. When we said yes, the gentleman immediately pointed to the smoked meat sandwich highlighted on the wall and said, "This is what you want." No further convincing needed! And wow, was he right. The sandwich was piled high with incredibly tender, melt-in-your-mouth smoked meat, tucked between two relatively thin slices of bread with just a touch of mustard. What impressed me most was the balance. Despite the generous amount of meat, nothing felt overwhelming. The seasoning was beautifully restrained, allowing the richness and flavor of the meat to speak for itself. Sometimes the simplest combinations are the hardest to perfect, and Schwartz's has clearly mastered this one. The atmosphere is an experience in itself. Imagine a restaurant the size of a small apartment, absolutely buzzing with people, yet operating like a well-oiled machine. Guests are constantly coming and going, the staff moves with impressive efficiency, and somehow everything feels organized rather than chaotic. Our food arrived almost immediately, and the service was genuinely friendly and attentive. The walls are covered with photographs of famous visitors and articles documenting the restaurant's history and success. You really get the sense that you're sitting inside a little piece of Montréal history. This isn't somewhere you come for a long, leisurely lunch or an intimate atmosphere. You come for an iconic sandwich, a lively experience, and a restaurant that knows exactly what it does best. Five stars without hesitation. No complaints from us, and absolutely worth every dollar. If you're visiting Montréal, put Schwartz's on your list and trust the recommendation when they tell you what to order!
