A Vietnamese friend once told me that if I am going to order pho, and one of the ingredients is "rare steak" (should cooks in the heat of the broth), ALWAYS get it on the side. (Even if it means you will be adding to the broth yourself). He used to work at a Vietnamese restaurant for 5 years and told me that if you ask for the rare steak on the side, they have no choice but to give you the fresh and red steak, instead of the brown smelly steak. The rare steak that came out on the side looked like a pile of rotting proscuitto. It smelled bad, and the edges were crusting over (as if it has been left out all night). I am unsure why anyone (including the waitresses) would think it would be okay to bring this to someone's table. Moreso, the pho broth was nearly clear as water and had absolutely no flavor. The noodles were overcooked and soggy, the wrapper of the fresh spring roll was dry, the beer was barely cold, and the worst part was... the waitresses came up to us asking if everyone was okay... looked at the rare steak... and smiled.... We continued to say "we are fine," and tipped 20% with the intention of never returning. I think the bay area has spoiled us with Asian cuisine. I'd like to start off by saying this noodle house in Salinas is phenomenal I was ranting and raving about about how absolutely delicious the wonton soup was to my coworker so we decided to head over for a lunch break. Because I know what to expect, I asked for less noodles, more vegetables, as did my coworker I'd like to start off by saying we seemed like we were absolutely bothering the young lady and young man that are working there for sure did not care one bit that we were there the service was extremely slow to take our order extremely slow to get our food and even slower to get a check a matter fact, I never got the check. I had to walk up to the front. and just asked to pay at that point we were running very late to get back to work- thank goodness we took separate cars. I sent my employee back to work as I did not want her to get in trouble for taking so long. Good thing she was with the boss lol. The fact that I can go to the one in Salinas walk in and place to go order And be back at home within 15 minutes but in this location taking over an hour to get some service was pretty ridiculous The actual soup was pretty good. However, they definitely did not honor our special request. Just a little disappointing because we work so close to here and being the rainy season coming up, it would be really nice to depend on this location to come through for some delicious soup. This restaurant was marvelous! The pho was light and flavorful, perfect if you just want a light meal. The service was quick and speedy, almost as though they knew what I wanted before I ordered. I came here on the recommendation of a friend. It is a huge restaurant with a beautiful interior. Looks like it used to be primarily a Chinese food place. But I came for the Pho. I ordered spring rolls and rare beef pho along with hot tea. The spring rolls had pork and shrimp. They were fresh and cooked and delicious. I loved the peanut sauce served with them. The pho was a huge bowl served with all the usual condiments. I love to dress up each nite with a little of each sauce to try them all. I've become a fan of chili oil. I spent $45 on delivery and requested chopsticks and extra hot sauce. What kind of pho restaurant does not provide hoisin sauce nor sriracha packet or any form of hot sauce as a condiment? Their milk teas are one of the best in the Monterey area, however very inconsistent in the amount of ice they use. Sometimes very heavy on the ice and sometimes you wonder if there's any ice at all. Their appetizers are nothing special. Fried tofu not crispy at all, soggy and not too flavorful. Their onion rings are fried too long and I don't know anyone who likes burnt onion rings. The pot stickers feel like they came straight out of a bag and were microwaved. Very soggy. I was disappointed. First they messed up on my order and I called them and the manager took my number down and said she would give me 10% off next time, fine. "Not good". I'm very sad to say this because I used to be a fan of this place. I get take out here and used to eat here but I had a very bad experience on Dec 31, 2020. There was a person in front of me inline to order food in the peak of Covid-19 here in California and they were chatting a lot. About what to order, what's popular, what's good, what the server recommends the most...fine, but mask was pulled fully below their nose barely at the top of the lip...not fine. I'm watching this conversation for about a minute waiting for the server to say "put your mask up please" and it didn't happen. My mom and I went to eat there today and she ordered the Asian chicken salad and her chicken was literally raw and she didn't notice until halfway into eating it. She told another server because our server wasn't around, he was apologetic and very nice. I'm sure he told our server what happened.
