Chop Cheese Bodega has actually been on my radar for a little while. Every time I'm in the Fresno area I pass by and just the aesthetic alone piqued my curiosity. They happened to be having an event with Walter Johnson aka Mr. Tendernism and thought that was the perfect opportunity to try them. Upon walking up I loved the tall "chop cheese" sign, I loved the NY mural on the wall and I just love how inviting and vibrant this place is. The menu is quite interesting, they have 5 different varieties of chop cheese sandwiches as well as a classic NY bacon/egg/cheese, chop cheese bowls/fries/onion rings. They also have a plethora of add ons. I kept it simple and got the Bodega Chop Cheese and I love that the sandwich comes with seasoned fries and a side of chop sauce. It's refreshing to see a chop cheese spot include a side and sauce instead of charging for them separately. The prices are amazing for this economy and the amount of food that you get, super affordable. The chop cheese was amazing!! First I really like the bread, it held up perfectly with all of the fillings. The meat was chopped nicely and seasoned to perfection. It was cheesy, the lettuce was crunchy and not soggy and I like the addition of the peppers. This is definitely a top tier chop cheese in my opinion. I really enjoyed the fries as well, they were super crispy and seasoned. The sandwich and fries paired well with the chop sauce which tasted a bit like thousand island but with a twist. The customer service here is on point. Every employee that I encountered was super friendly and the owner was so nice, I like that he spoke to everyone there and made his presence known. Overall, this might be my new go to chop cheese spot in Fresno. You can't beat how good the food is, the great customer service, affordable prices and the variety of the menu. I highly recommend trying them!
I think I found my new favorite sandwich spot for 2026. I love sandwiches and I'm mad I didn't get to try this sooner! I ordered the Bodega Chop Cheese and oh my goodness, it's so very good. The meat is nicely chopped up and seasoned well. Nice veg ratio, it has lettuce, tomatoes, American peppers, and onions. This is my ideal sandwich. You can't go wrong ordering this one. My order came with fries and they were nice and crispy. Skinny just how I like it. Their seating area is in another area that's not attached to the order side. Good amount of indoor seating and the graphic art in there is super cool. I love it! They do have restrooms for their customers. Customer service was amazing, the girl who took my order today 1/30/26 was so friendly and went through the menu with me. I will be coming back most definitely, it's goooooood. @nomwithsally for video :)
Been wanting to try this place for a while and finally stopped in their brick and mortar to give it a try. A very pleasant man directing people into a parking lot upon arrival, and there is plenty of parking contrary to what I read before coming. You walk up to their order window, place your order, then are given a pager, and you can wait outside or go inside to where they have a small eating area with about six tables. It is chilly out now, so there is no outside seating as described on this page. Just a few tables inside. The area was clean with a clean restroom. It wasn't speedy by any means, probably took a little over 15 minutes wait but not too bad. I chose to try the classic bodega chopped cheese which comes with lettuce, tomatoes, mayo and ketchup. They gave me pickles and peppers on the side. It also comes with fries. The sandwich is a good size, and considering it also comes with fries is a great price. I couldn't eat it all and could have easily split my order with someone. Now for me, I don't like American cheese on burgers so the taste of the cheese I didn't really like. And I could barely detect any lettuce or tomato. For me, I would probably order a Philly style if I went again with peppers and onions and skip the cheese. But if this is your jam, and you like a lot of American cheese, go try this place out! It's a great deal for the money.
So, people in customer service need to learn from this restaurant!! These people were so friendly, not the fake friendly but really offered excellent customer service from both the owner and the employees. The menu was easy to read, and the food came out quickly. There's plenty of parking, and the owner even came out to greet us and ask if we had any questions or if we wanted him to walk us through the menu. We asked how he got started and what inspired his restaurant, and he shared his story--such a humble and genuine person. We loved the food. The sandwich was delicious, flavorful, and very filling. We'll definitely be coming back!
I've been craving chop cheese sandwich and I can't believe that they actually have a spot here in Fresno for it! It's such a vibe! plenty of space for parking. They take your order on the side of the building and you can also eat inside. There's painting on the walls it gives New York! Sandwich was flavorful as well as their crispy seasoned fries. Clean inside and out! I believe the owner took my order and he was very polite enough to helpful me break down the menu! I think they are also in the middle of moving to a new location so keep an eye out on that. I'll for sure come back again!
We came in for lunch during the week. The parking lot was hopping, but we found a spot. The hubs decided on the original chopped and I went for the dorito nachos. We went into the sesting area and found some seats. I am 99% sure the AC was on and it was already very cold outside. There was music playing and it was very loud. Ordinarily, this may not have presented a problem, but there was a larger party of people who wanted to have conversation, which meant they were yelling at each other to ne heard iver the music. I dont fault them..but it was very loud and very cold inside. We decided to move to the patio area. It was probably high it's low 60's and misty outside, but it was quieter and maybe even a little warmer. Our device binged after a reasonable wait and the Mr retrieved our food. My nachos were of a good size. My caveat was the way the nachos were constructed. There were ample doritos, then the meat, the cheese is just a couple of squares of american cheese melted on top of the meat with sauce on top of it all. This means the meat all clumped to the cheese and wanted no part of being a nacho. The sauce did infiltrate the stack of chips, but resulted in a weird amalgamation. I ate the meat and cheese and had a few chips. The Mr. said his sandwich was good but, the bread was kind of hard and everytime he took a bite, the filling would squish out. He did loke the sauce though and enjoyed his fries. I might try the lettuce bowl of I come back..but will take it to go so I can eat someplace warm. The staff were very nice and a lady did come out to the patio and check on everyone. I live life with my service dog and we had no issues at all.
Chop Cheese Bodega is finally in its soft opening phase after having been super popular over the summer, and I had the opportunity to check it out this past week. First of all, can we talk about quality of food? Everything I had was incredibly fresh and well-seasoned. The meat and cheese chopped up was the perfect melt-in-your-mouth, filling protein combo, and the lettuce and other vegetables cut through all the fat from the meat and cheese, making it a well balanced sandwich. The bread was soft and perfectly tied everything together. Not to mention the fries? Perfection - I love me some seasoned, thin fries. I also got to try the loaded fries, and even a couple bites of that was enough to fill me up. Packed with meat and cheese, I had leftovers for days. The owner is very knowledgeable and makes sure to take care of his customers over everything else. I didn't interact much with staff, but the man who was running the register seemed sweet and helped explain the menu and the whole "soft opening" situation to everyone who asked. The shop inside is small and only has a little bit of seating, but they have a nice outdoor seating area in the parking lot that is a vibe.
Went before lunch and there were plenty of parking and a few people. You order from the outside and pick up your food and they had an indoor/outdoor right next to the order window. I ordered the desperado and it was good but it was definitely missing something, which I think needed more cheese. I would definitely order extra cheese the next time.
The sandwich was pretty solid. Fries were fresh and crispy. It comes with a side sauce. Staff were friendly. Definitely needed some extra napkins. It can get messy. I wish the bread wasn't as chewy.
Updating from my previous review. The food is consistently good and unique. I love that the menu has expanded since they first opened. Everything feels really comforting, and I always appreciate how they lean into cheese across so many of their items. The service is nice as well--it's a walk-up, self-seating setup, but the staff are friendly and the process is easy. I'd also recommend trying a few different items. My family has tried several things on the menu and we always end up leaning toward different favorites.
I hardly ever leave a bad review but since I text the establishment a picture of our sandwich that was inedible due to grease overload. (It seriously was like as if you fried fatty hamburger meat in a pan and poured the whole pan of grease and all on the sandwich). Insane. The bread was soaked with grease. I'm rewriting this review because I thought the establishment would make it right but that never happened. See the picture I posted, the white- non see-through paper that the sandwich was wrapped in is actually clear because of the grease saturation.
I was hesitant to try this place knowing I have bad stomach issues with dairy. But was I very wrong !!! I was able to alter all the cheese and was very impressed by equal ratio from Meat to bread. It had amazing flavor and the perfect crunch!! Sandwich wasn't greasy at all . I definitely will be Coming back and I highly recommend !! Fries were delicious as well!!
Easy find. Parking available. Kinda rough side of town. But location is very clean and cute. You order outside but can dine in. Everything is made fresh which i like. I order Philly cheese steak and the nachos. They had a mishap and give me an extra sandwich and drink free. Which was pretty cool of them. Customer service was great. Everything was good. I didnt get the normal Philly Cheese steak favor I was looking for but overall good still. Fries are crispy

Hi Primo,…
A great chopped cheese is a quintessential chopped cheese staple, and people in Fresno cannot get enough of it. What was once a New York bodega classic has steadily made its way west, showing up on menus at local burger joints. Now, Fresno has its first brick-and-mortar spot dedicated entirely to the chopped cheese sandwich. It is easy to see the appeal. The original chopped cheese is a savory, gooey combination of seasoned ground beef and melted American cheese, grilled with onions and loaded into a soft yet toasted hero roll. Finished with crisp lettuce, fresh tomato, and a tangy mayo-ketchup blend, it strikes a satisfying balance of richness, freshness, and texture. This spot comes impressively close to nailing the formula. Their Original Bodega Chop features finely minced ground beef with American cheese melted seamlessly into the meat, sautéed onions that add a subtle sweetness, and a seasoning of adobo that brings authentic depth and savoriness. The bread--a butter-toasted hero roll--was sturdy enough to hold the juicy filling, though I personally prefer something softer and chewier. That said, it was warm and tasted fresh. The toppings, including shredded iceberg lettuce, sliced dill pickles, and thinly sliced tomatoes, added a welcome crunch that balanced the richness of the meat, while the mayo and ketchup delivered a tangy moisture throughout. Overall, the sandwich leaned slightly too heavy on the bread and sauce for my taste, but it was still undeniably delicious and satisfying. The fries, however, did not quite hit the mark. They were overly crispy--almost as if they had been refried--and had an unexpected sweetness that did not quite work for me. While I still prefer the chopped cheese from my go-to ghost kitchen, I appreciate what this place brings to the table: a dedicated space, a walk-up counter, dine-in seating, and a broader menu. If you are looking for a comforting, filling, and affordable meal, a solid chopped cheese like the one served here is always a good call. read more

Hi Ashley,…
Wow! Just wow. It must've been pretty obvious we were first timers because as we walked up to the front to look at the menu/order, a man (who I assume was the Boss man) came and spoke to us, offering us sodas on the house and walking us through the menu! He was super friendly-- like a genuine friendly... it didn't feel fake just for the sake of business. He even gave us a tiny sample of the fries with their sauce and fresh jalapeños! The girl at the window who took our order was really nice and helpful as well. We haven't even had our meal yet (besides the sampler) and already I felt we were off to a very good start. My bf and I split one order of the Jalapeño Chop (kinda wish I got my own so I'd have leftovers to eat later). My friend and my brother both got the same as well. My sister got the original aka Bodega Chop, and my cousin got the Philly Chop Cheese. Each sandwich order comes with fries-- which, from that little sampler, we already knew it was going to be fire! Those fries were perfectly seasoned/fried, it was thin/crispy, and that sauce slaps! The fresh jalapeños took it to the next level in both the sampler and our sandos. Have extra napkins ready because it was a messy one-- for me at least. That thing was bursting with flavor and busting out of the wrap for me... but don't worry, I picked those fallen scraps up from the box and finished it off still. Perfect amount of cheese -- but I'll be honest, I'd take more cheese lol (I love cheeeese!)... it had a good amount of lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and the peppers... and again, that sauce that ties it all together. I was doing a happy dance for sure. My tastebuds were happy and my tummy was full. There were probably 4 tables inside the room with the Simpsons-like themed background that we ate in... they could fit 4 people each, comfortably... and I believe another area outside with more seats. They keep it clean-- we were even able to chat with the Boss more when he came out to clean some of the tables off for more guests coming in. My brother and I have been wanting to try this place out for a while now... I'm glad it finally made it out of the group chat! If you've been wondering about it-- go, now! Blackstone & Bullard-- It's a very yellow establishment, you can't miss it lol. 10/10 would definitely recommend. read more

First time here. I ordered the jalapeño chop, but subbed provolone for American cheese, and added mushrooms. Raining a bit outside, they have a nice indoor seating area (with a bathroom) and covered outdoor area--mostly setup to go (order/pick up outside, get a pager). Newly remodeled--place is clean! Cheerfully greeted at the window by a young woman, and the owner working in the back asked if it was my first time there--I appreciated the enthusiasm by the whole team. Waited about 10 minutes (I don't know, could have been less--I was hungry though ). See the picture. Bread was toasted; sandwich was full and messy! (Remember the old ad "if it doesn't get all over the place, it doesn't belong in your face"?--he took it to heart). The fries were fire; the seasoning with just a hint of spice--perfectly fried. Good! That sandwich?!? Better than I expected. I left my fries there to get covered with whatever fell off, then grabbed a fork. I regret nothing! Thank you David and team! read more

Food Review: Chopped Cheese Fresno, CA (Blackstone & Bullard) I'm a big fan of steak and cheese sandwiches, and I've spent years trying to find one that reminds me of the steak and cheeses from Boston or Chicago. I've never had a real Philly yet still on the bucket list so Fresno's Chopped Cheese stepped up for review. I ordered two sandwiches: the classic Philly Chopped Cheese and the Bodega Cheese. The bodega version comes with lettuce and tomato, while both sandwiches use Angus beef instead of ribeye. Size-wise, the sandwiches were hot, hearty, and looked promising. Now, the Bodega: lettuce and tomato on a hot, juicy steak sandwich sounded good in theory... but in real life, it turned the veggies into a soggy mess. The heat + meat juices made the bread fall apart faster than my diet plan on a Friday night. Flavor was solid, though. Honestly, you could make something similar at home with good beef, a hoagie roll, and some veggies just maybe keep the cold stuff separate. The Philly Chopped Cheese (no lettuce or tomato) held up better. Chopped beef, melted cheese, and what looked like bell peppers and onions classic, simple, tasty. Both sandwiches had very similar flavor profiles: savory, cheesy, and juicy. Very juicy. Possibly too juicy, because again the bread tapped out early. The saving grace? Great customer service. They mixed up part of the order, but they fixed it immediately and even threw in some extras. If you're craving a hot, flavorful steak and cheese and don't mind a little bread breakdown, it's worth the stop. Overall, I gave Fresno chopped cheese .5 read more

Hi Manny,…
I absolutely love chopped cheese sandwiches and was thrilled to see a giant tall sign screaming "CHOPPED CHEESE" when I was in Fresno for work. After telling my work associates about my desire to fill my belly with this East Coast delight, we made a bee line here for lunch. It was everything I could have wanted and more! They have the simplicity of an In-N-Out menu with only 4 sandwich options (1 vegetarian) ,a couple ways to plus up fries, and a protein-style bowl. Ya'll. It was a cheesy, greasy, warm, fantastical flavorful adventure! Definitely ask for a couple extra napkins. I got the jalapeno chop, which was a nice touch of spice mixed in with the ooey gooey goodness. The fries were dusted in a very unique, almost BBQ-esque, dry rub. Served with a side of "Chop Sauce," which was a sweeter and more pickle-y version of INO spread. Enjoy the soda fountain, but know they've got Mexican Cokes under the counter, too! I hope they expand with a second location in Sacramento, so I can go all the time! read more

Hi Sean,…
I wanted to really like this place but first time there was awful.. it was really the food. Cus service was great so idk how it went downhill. I even talked to dude about how I seen Mr. Tendernism was coming to town and we was chopping it up at the order window. Unfortunately that was the only chop that was good cus he was able to answer my questions. But the chop cheese was not IT! My bf got the bodega and I got the jalapeno. Tbh they both the same thing, mine just had grilled jalapeños in it for an extra $1 basically. They both came with fries and their signature chop sauce on the side. We also got pickles and yellow peppers on the side. Even squeezing some of the yellow peppers in the sandwich for every bite couldn't save it. It was a very over powering smell from their paper wrap they wrapped the chop cheese in. Smelled weird and chemically. My bread bottom was lowkey stale cus with every bite I was able to pull the top bread but the bottom part of the bread was hard to detach. The fries were the worst!!! Although the seasoning on there tasted koo, them mfs was stale af!!! I did not receive crispy hot fries. I got cold stale old fries that tasted like it was fried a while ago and just been sitting out for a min!! I don't understand why when the place wasn't even busy. It was just me, and two other cars. I was really annoyed cus I had high expectations with this place. And it turned out to be ASS. Hate that I'm giving this review but it is my honest experience and sad that I had to throw away majority of the fries and half my sandwich since it was inedible IMO. I did not enjoy it at all. The taste wasn't nothing special really. I wanted to experience what all these good reviews had and unfortunately they did not deliver. Other than that, the building inside and out looks nice. The colors of the building is bright and very inviting. U can't miss this place going down blackstone.. read more

Shoutout to the staff for being quick and helpful. I definitely liked all the hand murals around the restaurant of NYC landmarks. I really enjoyed the original chop cheese sandwich. Don't forget to bite the banana pepper and drip some juice on the sandwich and add the sauce on it to boost the flavor. The chopped cheese fries were also mg jam, though I wish the fries were hand cut. The chopped cheese Doritos, Philly cheesesteak sandwich and desperado were cool. read more

Friendly staff, warm place to enjoy the food, reasonable prices for the portion. I was pleasantly surprised how yummy this food is. Being a unique dining experience on Fresno, this is a menu we haven't seen around here. Their homemade spice mix and dipping sauce added just the right balance of flavor! I can't wait to go back! read more

This chop cheese spot is amazing! The sandwich was perfectly cooked -- juicy beef, melted cheese, fresh roll, and that perfect balance of flavor that hits every time. The bread was soft but had a nice toast, and they didn't skimp on the meat or toppings. Everything tasted fresh and made with care. The service was fast and friendly, and the place had a great vibe -- clean, welcoming, and you can tell they take pride in their food. Easily the best chop cheese I've had, and I'll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend! read more

Was craving a burger of some sort and I decided to come here and try it out. At first I was excited when they announced they were opening but then I noticed they shut down and now they're open again. So I was a little hesitant on trying since that got me wondering what happened. Anyway, We pulled up on a raining day. Parked right in front and ordered at the window. We got the #1, which comes with fries. Great price btw for a full chop cheese and a whole bunch of fries, service was great! He hooked it up with another box of fries for us which was so unexpected and every kind of him. The chop cheese was a great size already cut in half for us, super hot and fresh which I love. Fries were cooked perfectly and seasoning is good but I will say the seasoning is kinda heavy so the more you eat it the salter it gets. Sauce was good, came with a side of pickles and pepper. This place is pretty bomb. The building is separated for the inside dine in area which is cool. You order outside through the window and you can go inside to eat after. Definitely coming back to try the other subs out. read more

Tasty new place for your cheesy fix. We had saw this place on Instagram and happened to drive by. It was definitely meant to be cause their hours of operation is 6 pm - midnight. Right now they are a pick up only place but it looks like they are working on places to sit inside. The menu is small but everything on the menu looks good. From sandwiches to fries to even a little salad option. For this time I only ordered the Nachos and the Fries. Both were loaded with that melted American cheese and topped with their grilled well marinaded carne asada. This same meat is used for all the sandwiches. The price seems fair for what you get and the service is good, they were polite and plenty attentive. You really can't go wrong with ordering the loaf fries and loaded nachos. I definitely will need to come back and I will for sure share this place with others. It is worth a try. read more

Overall I enjoyed the food and it was made pretty quickly too. I ordered the Bodega nachos for my son and I just ordered myself the Bodega sandwich. The bodega nachos had Dorito chips instead of the traditional tortilla chips, it also came with tomato's, onion and their sauce which was a mixed of thousand island with nacho cheese. The bodega sub sandwich I got has the meat which was juicy and well cooked, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, ketchup and mayo. When I went it wasn't too crowded so I don't mind it at all. There's a good amount of parking and you can eat inside or outside depending on the mood. The front server was friendly and very professional took our order. The menu is very limited on what they have but hey if the food is that good why add more. I waited in my car until my order was ready but they even went the extra mile and brought out my food to me even though they didn't have to. They play music for the customers to enjoy the atmosphere and it was a good spot to grab dinner from. I will definitely be going back to try and other sub they have. read more

Food was horrible! Service was horrible! Waited 1 HOUR!! For my food!!! The cooked yelled at the other cooks that they were putting too much meat! My sandwich had zero meat after he told them to HOLD THE MEAT. I can go on and on. The system they had for cooking was all wrong. Disgruntle employees because they were cooking in SUN. I saw this restaurant on Tik Tok. Plain and simple it was horrible. 1 HOUR WAIT!!!!!! read more

If you're hunting for a legendary chopped cheese experience that travels with you from Fresno to New York, this review is for you. Chopped cheese, that iconic East Coast staple, has found a surprisingly strong ambassador in Bodega in Fresno -- and the flavor travels far beyond city lines. Vibe:** The shop exudes a casual, no-frills authenticity. A quick scent of sizzling onions and seasoned beef greets you as you step in, signaling that you're about to taste something serious. Menu Focus:** Simple, focused, and unapologetically delicious. The chopped cheese takes center stage, with options that keep the core concept intact while offering a few thoughtful twists. Beef Quality:** Ground beef that's properly seasoned, not bland or overwhelmed by spice. The balance between savory beef and cheese melts into one harmonious bite. Toast & Texture:** A sturdy, lightly toasted hero roll that holds up to the juiciness without collapsing. The texture is important here -- you want a chewy bite with a crisp crust, not soggy or drywall-soft bread. Cheese Melt:** Melted cheese blankets the beef just enough to bind the flavors without hiding the beef's character. It's all about that creamy, gooey finish that clings to each bite. Onions & Flavor Profile:** Caramelized onions provide sweetness and depth, cutting through the beef's richness. If there are peppers or additional toppings, they're added with restraint to maintain balance. Seasoning:** A well-tuned blend of salt, pepper, and perhaps a seasoning kick that hints at regional variation without overpowering the core ingredients. Consistency:** Fans report a reliable level of quality across multiple visits. Consistency is key for a dish built on a simple formula. Character:** This is more than a sandwich; it's a statement of street-food confidence. The prep appears practiced, almost ritualistic, which lends credibility to the claim of "the best." Local Pride:** While chopped cheese is a staple of the East Coast, Fresno's rendition bravely embraces the style with local flair, making a bold claim that travels well. Cultural Bridges:** Chopped cheese encapsulates a bold, urban, comfort-food ethos. The Fresno rendition honors that spirit while adapting to local tastes and ingredients. Accessibility:** For travelers or curious foodies in New York, the idea of a Fresno-to-New York chain or pop-up that carries the torch of this sandwich could be both nostalgic and novel. The advocacy for "Bodega the best in Fresno, California all the way to New York" captures a journey more than a single bite. Recommendation:** If you're ever near Fresno and craving a robust chopped cheese, seek out Bodega. If you're in New York and craving read more
