Brisket Hot Pot
Lupe M.

Let me start this review by saying I'm not the biggest fan of Hot Pot. I've tried it a few times in the past and couldn't understand what the hype was. That was until I came to Chongqing. I can't remember the last time I was completely full and kept eating because the food was that good. Came in on a Tuesday night so the place was pretty empty. Needless to say service was on point. Very attentive and friendly. You order on a paper menu as you write and circle what you want. Fail proof system in my opinion. You also pick your size from small to large. We decide to order the Brisket Hot Pot and picked the large size as there was two of us. Once the pot came out we realized it was way too much food for two people. This wasn't including the extra sides we ordered. Everything came out fresh and in a reasonable time. The brisket itself was so tender it melted in your mouth. It would have been nice to know it came with potato's already cooked into the hot pot because I ordered sliced potato's on the side. The broth had so much flavor! I ordered in medium spice and it was the perfect amount of heat. Hot enough to make my nose running but still able to enjoy the flavor. One thing that really stood out to me was at the end of our meal we asked for a to-go container and our waitress came to our able to box everything up for us. She took her time and made sure she packed every item no matter how little or small the item was. In summary I'm now a fan of Hot Pot or I should say I'm a fan of this Hot Pot lol. I'll be back soon!

Real ones know you gotta call this place ChingChong Chicken Pot. Jokes aside, this is such an interesting concept (clay pot into hot pot), but it works well. I would get the beef clay pot again. The chicken clay pot is also good, but you have to deal with a lot of bones. Tho honestly, the clay pot will probably be 80% of the meal, so keep that in mind when ordering for the hot pot portion.

Food: The Beef Ribs Pot was delicious! There was a lot of veggies and meat enough for 2 people. If you're going with 4 people, it will be enough if you all get rice as well. All in all, no complaints about the food--it was savoury, delicious and they even have an open sauce bar for your convenience (although I would argue that you don't even need it, even if you're doing the hotpot portion)! Service: Service was great! We went at a pretty slow time (around 4pm) and there was only 2 other tables beside us. The waiters always noticed when our water and soup bases were low--very attentive! Ambiance: Love! No notes, they even have a TV for your entertainment. There are a lot of tables with beautiful Chinese decorations. TDLR: food was enough for 2-3 people, waiters were very attentive and there is a lot of space for other diners. Would I come back? Yes, I would definitely come back!

A unique experience with hot pot! You pick your dry hot pot dish (i liked the beef) and first eat it with rice. Once you're done, they'll pour the hot pot base in the pot for you and you add your veggies and meat like a regular hot pot (and cook it)! The dry pot flavor was very delicious. The only complaint was that the meat in the dry pot was non existent. The chicken dry pot had barely any meat (all bones). You also individually pay for the items you throw in the hot pot (not all you can eat). It kind of forces you to pay a lot for extra meat. Nevertheless, the hot pot was good. Service was good. The restaurant is smaller and has limited space. There is a little sauce station as well. Overall, it was a fun experience!

Hot pot a la cart items

So Houston Chinatown has options ip the wazoo and my bookmarks for the area keeps growing and does not shrink. I saw this spot driving along Belleaire and it went on my list fairly quickly but I did not make the effort to come out. That is until one of my friends recommended it and shared with me that its sort of 2 meals in one (a dry pot to start that becomes hot pot). That sold me so I made my way. We came on a Friday night and surprisingly not busy so we were sat pretty quickly. Its a casual Chinese-decored spot and has the like... modernized take on old school China aesthetic..? Anyways my partner and I ordered the medium chicken dry pot and some various a la cart hot pot items for part 2 of dinner. I did find it odd that you have to pay for rice as I'm so used to it just being an unlimited carb at Chinese restaurants but definitely don't skip the rice. Regardless, the dry pot was very flavorful and I'd highly recommend adding the green peppercorns for that signature Szechuan numbing. Between the two of us, the medium chicken pot was already more than enough food but we still had a whole hotpot course. To start that, you just notify the staff that you're ready for hotpot and they'll come over with a giant kettle of soup to pour in your pot. Then you have a new hot pot meal and can order more sides. Theres also a sauce bar if you want to create a dipping sauce for your hot pot goods. As someone who loves hot pot, I really enjoyed the multimeal approach here and can see it being a really fun spot for large groups. The amount of food provided for the cost was fair and my partner and I ended up with lots of leftovers. I'd highly recommend this spot for anyone!

I haven't been back here in about a year, and let's just say... I've missed it. I often get the frog pot, but I decided to try to garlic ribs this time. Amazing. Compared to the frog pot, it definitely has less bones. Plenty of garlic if that's what you're into. I love how there's a second course; hotpot! After you're done, they pour broth into the remainder and you can order a la carte hotpot items. If you're hungry and looking to eat a lot, this is the place.

A unique dining experience that encourages extended meals and conversation. You start the meal off with a dry pot stir fry of your choice - definitely pay the extra $1 for rice cause idk how else you can enjoy the dish. You typically wanna finish the meat before moving on to the second portion of your meal. They will add a bone broth to the remaining veggies and sauce in your pot which now turns your meal into hotpot. The best of both worlds for people who want different meals for dinner. 5 sides for the hotpot and one small pot was enough to satisfy 3 people for around $17 per person after tip. A great place to catch up with someone, I wouldn't come here expecting a quick in and out meal

The interesting thing with this restaurant is that you start off with a main dish (chicken, frog, beef, shrimp, etc...) and after you're finished with the main dish they pore a soup base into the clay pot so that you can have a round of hot pot afterwards. The whole experience was worth the value. The price was not very expensive and left me feeling completely full. The flavor of all of the dishes were great. The establishment was clean and service was good. I would recommend and I would be willing to come back myself!

Came all the way from Austin to Houston just to eat, and wow--I'm so glad we did! Austin doesn't have too many spots like this, so this was such a treat. The broth was absolutely packed with flavor--rich, comforting, and downright addictive. The restaurant was spotless (love a super clean space ), and parking was surprisingly easy, which made the whole experience even smoother. Service was a little on the slower side, but honestly, once the food hit the table, it was worth the wait. Definitely a spot I'd come back to whenever I'm in Houston--highly recommend if you're craving something comforting and flavorful!

Chongqing has been a staple in my family for a while now. We've been here multiple occasions and it is phenomenal every time. The servers are pretty attentive, and it's a nice family vibe in here. You start off with a dry pot that is accompanied by a side of steamed rice. We got the garlic ribs on medium spice this time, and it was very good. The spare ribs were super tender and fell off the bone, while the sauce was very well seasoned which went perfectly with rice. After you finish the dry pot, you can request the broth to be poured in to make it a hot pot where you can order additional proteins like beef, lamb, fish, etc along with glass noodles, ramen and veggies. They also have a sauce bar where you can make your own dip for the hot pot. The bill came out to be $120 including tax and tip for 4 of us which is pretty good considering we were all pretty full.

My partner and I ventured to Chongqing Chicken Pot on a Friday night when it was slightly cooler and we were in the mood for a warm, hearty meal. This is a cool spot in the plaza with Meet Fresh (has its own parking garage that is three levels) that serves "dry" pots with your protein of choice first, followed by adding broth to the pot with whatever options you want (veggies, noodles, more protein). We started with the chicken pot, which had tons of white and dark meat, a bit of spiciness and a slight numbing sensation, red onion, celery, and delicious whip garlic that absorbed all of the saucy goodness (even though it's a dry pot, it still has a decent sauce base, it's just not full blown broth). Pictured is a medium pot, which is probably too much for two adults unless you haven't eaten all day. We barely finished the chicken when we were ready for the broth to make it into a more traditional hot pot. Note that you select your hotpot options at the beginning so they come out well in advance of adding the broth. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and we certainly didn't leave hungry. Our servers were very kind and checked in frequently. And the price for two adults was quite reasonable when you consider we had 2 meals a piece. Give them a try when you're in the Bellaire/Chinatown area of Houston. Just make sure you come hungry!

Broth added to the pot..Hotpot time!!!

Controversial but gotta give credit when credit is due -- thanks to Mikey Chen, is how I found out about this place! I love dry hotpot along with Szechuan cuisine, and since Bay Area has just a couple places, I knew I wanted to check this place out (so glad I did!) We arrived around 6:00pm (get here early, it'll get pretty packed and then there'll be a waitlist!) and were able to be seated and started grubbing around 6:30pm We got the Medium Chicken Pot at Mild Spice -- very tasty and also it was perfect for SO who doesn't eat a lot spice, and the Medium was a great size to split among two average eaters! But, wishing I ordered a small now...because the remaining spices at the bottom of the pot...staff adds broth to it and ta-da, HOTPOT time! Ugh had I known the broth would be so delicious, I would've opt for a small pot lol Highly recommend checking out this place if you love Hotpot + Szechuan cuisine, it's located in a plaza with its lots of desserts too which is always a bonus!

Highlight: Chongqing Chicken Pot and hot pot with beef, lamb, enoki mushrooms, quail eggs, and bean curd Such a fun and unique dining experience, where you first enjoy tender, tasty, and flavorful chicken from a pot, which later transforms into a savory hot pot, broth flavored by the remains of the chicken pot. You're eating most parts of a chicken so be prepared to work for the meat. The ones closer to the bones are the most tender and flavorful. The meats for the hot pot were high quality and the vegetables tasted even better after soaking in the broth. Hospitality: Got our hot pot ingredients soon after we ordered but the chicken pot did take about 15 minutes. The staff was attentive and did provide us with our broth as soon as we were ready. Honorable Mention: Be prepared to stay a little bit longer than an average restaurant to be able to enjoy the meal fully. I would recommend!

Ordering is done through an online system, which is cool in theory, though my service struggled a bit, thankfully my brother had no issues, so we made it work. We ordered the triple broth: spicy bone tallow, tomato, and chicken. The spicy broth definitely packs a punch (even for spice lovers-stay hydrated ). The tomato broth was rich, savory, and hands-down my favorite. The chicken broth was a little bland, but the overall flavors were still solid. While I wish there was a bigger meat and seafood selection (especially for seafood lovers like me), everything we ordered was delicious. Overall, Old Alley Hot Pot is a great spot for date night, a fun dinner with friends or family, or even a cozy solo outing. Highly recommend for the experience alone.

The food at Shabu En is so good! The service is very thoughtful also and they're very attentive. The decorations in the restaurant is also very nice and it's very clean too. There's plenty of parking so no need to worry about driving around to get a spot unless you're trying to be closer. When you walk in, there is a waiting area where you can sit while waiting to be seated. They also provide some water and snacks in the front while waiting. It also has a photo spot near the front. For the food, there is a big selection. They have lots of soup bases, and it's possible to switch soup bases if you feel tired of the one you started with. I tried a few and they were all good. The flavors start to mix after you put in your hotpot ingredients, so I would suggest drinking some of the soup beforehand. My favorite broth I tried was the duck broth. You can really taste the duck and it's the most flavorful to me, and someone in the group said you can really taste the five spice powder (I couldn't but I liked it a lot). The tonkatsu is pretty decent and tastes like what you expect. I tried the Shabu En special broth, and it tastes like dashi soup. Very standard and pretty good broth. In my opinion, the sukiyaki broth is good for short term broth and just dipping your meat temporarily. To me the sweetness overpowered the soy sauce flavor, but it's still very good. You get your meat by ordering with the server, but they come by very often and it comes out very quickly that you don't really notice a long period without any meat. At the center where you grab veggies and the sauce bar, there are sections where you can get drinks, such as tea and Vietnamese coffee, which is in addition to the drinks you can order off the menu. There is also a small dessert station but it's a must try! It has a snow shaved ice, and it has a toppings bar next to it with toppings and different sauces you can put on it. Overall, it's a really good AYCE restaurant that's definitely worth trying out.

I would say that would be a basic Chinese hotpot broth to try if this is your first time. I don't recommend the SUKIYAKI broth. The menu says that this is a popular broth for beginners. But you're basically cooking in sweet soy sauce. 5. Cleanliness - dining area was clean, buffet table would do better if they have an extra person manning the table. Tongs were sticky and food droppings on the table. The restrooms were humid and smelly. Something they can easily work on with a little more focus to cleanliness.

Service was fast, and what seemed like a seemingly small building was actually bustling. We ordered the Best of Both Worlds option and requested the Spicy Bone Marrow along with the Tomato Broth; they complement each other quite well, with the Spicy Bone Marrow being our personal favorite. It is definitely spicy, but nothing that I couldn't handle. The Tomato Broth was delicious as well, but added a nice sweetness to our meal. We chose the Classic All-You-Can-Eat lunch deal, and ordered a plate of the Natural Prime-Aged Lamb, the Hand Sliced Beef Short Plate, the Marinated Garlic Beef, and the Pork Belly; I can't say I'm a huge fan of how they divided the meat selections, however, since I could get premium meat elsewhere without being limited. But overall, the meat was of decent quality, and the buffet offered various options. Compared to other hot pot places, they even had a section where you could serve yourself egg rolls, white rice/fried rice, and stir-fried noodles, though I can't speak to the quality... very much buffet-quality if you catch my drift, but still lovely nonetheless. Similarly, you can fetch your own iced drinks and dessert too. I do wish Happy Lamb's sauce station had special pre-made flavors or instructions for making them, much like Shabu Zone or Haidilao; sometimes I don't trust myself to freestyle my own sauce. There are some cross-contamination concerns as well, since there'd be about 4 tongs at foot/pants level, but at least 9 food options (e.g., noodles, dumplings, veggies) to choose from. Not sure if other people share the same sentiment, but I guess they all get boiled in the end anyway. Overall, it's a decent option if you're in Downtown Houston! But I wouldn't call Happy Lamb my go-to spot.

The garlic sauce, black garlic, spicy ponzu, wasabi and corn are amazing. I just can't express enough how amazing it is to have the sauce bar and banchan bar. Banchan Bar: My favorite part of shabu zone and something that keeps me coming back. The onion jalapeno banchan is amazing, sweet and delicious perfect balance to the meat. The service was top notch Kevin our waiter was perfect, he explained exactly what us first timers needed to know (we opted for the BBQ vs Hot Pot) and gave excellent amount of service without interrupting too often, but without ignoring. And now my favorite part the food.... We ordered the following for our meat selections: Prime Beef Brisket, Spicy Beef Bulgogi, Garlic Chicken, Pork Belly, Cumin Lamb and Garlic Shrimp. For veggies: Shiitake mushrooms, Mung Bean Sprouts, Onions, Bamboo Shoots, Eggplant, Zucchini and we topped it off with a pineapple drink. My friend said the veal and the pork belly were both delicious, I don't eat either so my review is based on everything else. OMG the flavors were so packed into the meats they needed nothing else. The spicy beef bulgogi was by far my absolute favorite (I polished off two full servings myself) the spice profile was so perfect that it enhanced the beef without masking the natural flavor and the use a good quality beef as well so any toughness is due to your own over cooking which still didn't happen. The shrimp and chicken came in tied for second place for flavor bomb, I'm pretty sure they marinate this stuff for days for it to taste so full of flavor! It is eclectic, decorated in an Asian pop culture theme with [sometimes promiscuous lol] music videos playing on a big projector screen. And, it is honestly loud (booths are in rather close proximity to one another and there's constant clatter & commotion from the table action). We had a few issues - the grill didn't stay hot (either malfunctioning or low on fuel), there weren't any hot buffet options (like other locations offer), and a few menu items were unavailable (ran out) - but we enjoyed our meal, nonetheless. Even with a few missing offerings, there is plenty of variety - meats, seafood, vegetables, soups, noodles & rice. The sauce bar has many condiments & dips; you can play mad scientist with your seasonings/marinade. And, there was a cold buffet that offered kimchi and a few fruits. They also had a long list of beverages that included boozy cocktails and exotic smoothies or teas. Kevin was an outstanding server - extremely attentive & superbly patient (bless his heart for accommodating our rowdy and very needy group of newbies lol). Some tips for first-timers: -The AYCE pricing is applied to the whole table, so you have to make a group decision if you want to do bbq or hotpot or both ($5 add on). -Holidays and weekends are priced for Dinner all day. -They don't take reservations, so there may be a wait (especially if you have a large group). -It is booth seating throughout, with a max of 6 people per booth. -You have a 2 hour time limit (which seems like a lot, but you do have to wait for meat to cook on the grill). I recently tried this local shabu spot and had a really enjoyable experience. The broth was flavorful but not overly salty, which worked perfectly for cooking the meats and vegetables. The beef slices were thin and fresh, cooking quickly in the broth and staying tender. The vegetable platter was generous and included a nice variety like cabbage, mushrooms, tofu, and noodles. One thing I liked was the sauce bar--there were several options like ponzu, sesame sauce, garlic, and chili so you could customize the flavor exactly how you want. Service was friendly and attentive. The staff explained how to cook the ingredients properly, which is helpful if you're new to shabu-shabu. The only small downside was that it can get a bit busy during peak dinner hours, so you might have to wait for a table. Overall, it's a great spot if you're craving fresh hot pot and a casual dining experience. I'd definitely come back again.

I did try all of the meats and it was a lot of food but every cut was great! Nice open restaurant with plenty of seating and arranged so you feel as if you have your own space. The only reason I dropped it by a star was that there was only one person waiting on a large portion of the guests. She really tried hard and this is not a knock on her. But even though it was a slow night she struggled to keep up at times. I would have given it 4.5 if I had the choice.
