Most honest mechanic in Los Angeles! I went to Choi's 15 years ago to have them rebuild my transmission that another shop had ruined. It was such a great experience, upfront and reasonably priced, that the next time I needed some different work on my Pathfinder, I called them up to see if they did more than just transmission work. They do! Other than suspension work, which they don't do (gave a good referral to Sunset Auto), John has kept my 2003 Nissan running well. He won't upsell or try to convince you your car needs more repairs than it actually does. I won't go to any other shop than Choi's. 100% recommend! read more

I chose to get my transmission replaced at Choi's Transmission on the advice of Stacey from Affordable Care of Hollywood down the block. John Choi was friendly, accommodating, and communicative. He clearly outlined the problems with my transmission and suggested the most cost-effective way to address them. While working on my car, he observed that 2 of my engine mounts were damaged, and was able to source affordable OEM replacements for me, installing them for no added labor charge. He also replaced my battery, using his contacts at Autozone to get them to honor the battery warranty when they were unwilling to do so. 2006 F150 transmission went bad. Called so many places and couldn't get any answers. Called Choi as a last chance... super lucky. Communicates very clearly. Showed me the old part and new one. Explained the reasons for doing each piece of work. Gave options with pros and CONS of doing each. Made the choice easy to make with confidence. Prices were competitive. Will go back and take my families vehicles here moving forward. ** a few weeks after the tranny was rebuild, there was a jump going into second gear. Choi convinced me it was normal and how it would be moving forward. I was t happy but trusted. The transmission has completely failed. Had it completely rebuilt. New mechanic stated none of the work Choi said he did for me was done. Showed me the bandaids Choi put on instead of fixing completely. Yes I saved money with Choi, but the actual work was shotty at best but mainly dangerous. I would not go back or send anyone here for SAFETY!! read more

I drive a 2002 mercedes c class that need a transmission job last year. I still remember I was getting really frustrated after visiting many places including the dealership to get a quote. I honestly thought I need to spend thousands of dollars to fix it or perhaps it was time for me to sell it. However in the back of my mind I always had that feeling I was getting robbed because I'm a woman and we don't understand much about engines and cars. I needed to get my automatic transmission's oil changed for my '06 Cadillac, and got referred by another local mechanic shop. I have to say, when I arrived at Choi's, in the back of my head I was hoping for a really good service. Since this place was recommended by a really honest reputable shop, I walked in confident. My gut feeling was not wrong: Choi's Transmission Center is certainly a winner. Without too much fuss, I talked immediately to the owner (John), who gave me an honest quote around $140 (for newer Cadillacs unfortunately it can get quite pricey), if I were to bring my own oil. Of course, considering that at a dealership it would be twice as much, I decided to go for it, so I made an appointment. The overall performance of the job was quite good: it was done within a reasonable time frame, it was done professionally, and I also had a nice chit chat with the owner and his family. Perhaps the only con would be that this garage tends to get quite busy, and getting my car in and out was a little tricky (because it's located inside a private mall strip with a bunch of other mechanic shops). Also, when I went in for my appointment, I was told that unfortunately that day the parts needed for the job were not in yet, and had to reschedule for the following week. Overall, I was happy. My job car broke down. Transmission failed. I checked with many shops price for repair was almost the same. Since I knew owner from the past I've decide to call his son , John. So we talked about repair and I decide to bring my car to him, to honor his dad.His dad use to run that place.But he passed away . I was so sorry. So , my first impression when I brought my car was his office. His office was so dirty. Not organized, not clean. Spider webs all over. In that moment I start to regret my decision. People who not organize and professionally clean cannot do good job. So anyway I left my car in shop. 10 days later they fix my car , I take for testing. 1st they did not properly programmed my ecu. 2nd they broke my axle boot, vacuum hoses, wire harness clips. 3rd they not even secure transmission in the place . Bolts nuts was not even tithes up at all. Whole transmission job was mess, the guy who was disassembling my car was not qualified to do that .i paid over $3000.00 for transmission repair and at the end I am have more damage on my car. So I called John and I told him about , but he did not believe me. I have very good experience on car repair. I use to work in car repair shop and I know how is it work. I was that close to take him to the court , but because his Dad , mr Choi was so good to me I decide not to press charges. I am here today just to share my experience with shop. I have a 1999 Volvo V70 that was leaking transmission fluid. Volvo dealer replaced drain plug and dipstick O ring, but I notice a few months later that it was leaking again. Took it back and they wanted to pull out transmission and possibly charge me $4,500. I took it to Choi's on the advice of a local mechanic. They found the problem right away. Didn't need to pull out the transmission. They fixed it and charge an extremely fair price. They're friendly, honest, and great. read more

In all honesty, there is a good man here with a good crew, I traveled from Texas to Hollywood when my Acura SUV broke down and I literally had little money and no place to go or stay , when I came in to Chois I found out it was my transmission that would need to be replaced, I was devastated even more so, but here at Chois he broke everything down for me opened up my transmission and showed me exactly where all the damages were done plus, what would be a more affordable beneficial way to fix it. I have been VERY pleased with my experiences here. Choi (and his son John) were very helpful, professional and BY FAR the most reasonably priced of all the shops I researched. They originally came recommended to me from another mechanic shop. The first transmission they rebuilt went into a Nissan and the second went into a high performance Mazda. Also, my ex had one put into a Mercedes and in none of these transmissions were there any issues down the road. I recall he gave a year warranty back then. Since then, I have recommended them to two different friends who both had very good experiences and who, like me, only paid 1/2 to 1/3 of the price they received bids for at other establishments. read more

I started having problems with my 2015 Nissan Rogue months ago. Took it to the Nissan dealership in Universal City and they came back with a diagnosis of needing a valve body replacement. Before having the work done I wanted a second opinion. By the grace of God I was referred to John at Choi's Transmission. I spoke with John on the phone and he asked me to send him the diagnosis and codes. He later got back to me and explained that the problems I am having couldn't possibly be related to the diagnosis I received and told me it seemed like transmission failure. He literally spent about 30 minutes on the phone explaining the technicalities, most of which I can't articulate, but fully understood at the time. Since I'd already paid Nissan for a diagnosis, to save me money, he suggested I take my car to Aamco or Leon's for a free diagnostics check. And so I did. Lo and behold they confirmed EXACTLY what John said. My transmission was misdiagnosed by Nissan and was in fact in imminent need of a replacement. Aamco then suggested I have another Nissan in Van Nuys check it as they were way more qualified and competent. And so I took it there, once again, lo and behold they confirmed exactly what John and Aamco said. My transmission needs to be replaced and the initial diagnostics that I received was wrong. I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for John. Since my car was just a couple hundred miles over the power train warranty, I am still trying to get Nissan to do the repairs at no cost, which is why I didn't head straight back to John and have him do the work. I had to call back and thank John. Because if it hadn't been for him, taking the time to check into this and calling me back with a very detailed and knowledgeable breakdown of the issue, I could have possibly had Nissan do repairs on my car that wouldn't have fixed it and my transmission would have eventually failed. My regret is I never personally met John, to shake his hand and thank him in person. If you are having transmission problems, John is your guy! He is clearly no fly by night technician. He knows his craft. He spoke intelligently and articulately and he took the time to meticulously explain how it all works and suggested a viable course of action. Thank you John, truly. I brought in my 2008 BMW 750 LI for a whole new transmission because BMW charged an arm and a leg. Look for John he is the owner and I think this place has been in business for a while as a family business. Choi's crew rebuilt my car's transmission over 4 years ago. It took 3 or 4 days. The price was in the 4 digits, but was very reasonable considering all I know about my transmission is that it works on hydraulics, centrifugal force, and/or magic. The first time they fixed my car they didn't get it quite right, so I took it back. It was a simple error in electrical wiring, but when I asked Choi if he could fix it, he said he had to rebuild my transmission again. That must have been a huge hit on his profit. I would have been super upset if I were him, but he was apologetic and not visibly upset in the least. Amazing. It took a few more days, I picked up my car for the final time, and obviously there was no additional charge. Choi's cashier offered me hot tea so that was nice, too. Ever since then- my transmission is like the nicest thing on my car. It runs awesome, it's like a race car. Er, like a race car transmission in a crappy 93 sedan, but still... I changed the fluid after a few thousand miles and the old fluid looked perfect. I've driven 28,000 miles since then and my car still shifts awesome. I check the fluid when I change the oil and it still looks pretty pink and I never have to add any. I've thought many many times about what a great job they did at Choi's, so I wanted to get it on Yelp, let everybody know there's still some honest mechanics who are passionate (even if they don't show it on the outside) about their work. read more

I got my 1970 Chevy Nova TH350 transmission rebuilt here. It took a week, it cost $1480. Its been 2 months since and no problems yet. Shifts great. I will definitely write back if I have a problem with it, but it comes with a 1 year 12000 mile warranty so no biggy if I do. Only reason its 4 stars instead of 5 is because the communication was kindof weak during the process, but Im happy with the result. Would take other vehicles there in the future. read more
