Wow! I walked by this place about ten times and then I had to give in and give it a try. This chocolate is too good to describe with words... I think the closest I can come is something like the drooling noise that Homer Simpson makes. Talked to the owner and he gives all the credit to the fresh and high quality ingredients that go into the product... I think he is being modest and that there is probably some skill involved as well. The pumpkin and caramel are my favs so far. The turtle bars are a good value when they have them. read more

Attention chocolate lovers! Chocolatier Blue makes extremely delicious gourmet chocolates. We wandered over after dinner one night and tried the Passion Fruit Caramel and Hazelnut Bark. Both were amazing. The chocolate is so creamy smooth.... What is so wonderful about this shop is that they make them right there and you can watch this being done (at least this was the case when we went). It led me to appreciate all the time spent in making that beautiful heart shaped delight that I just let melt on my tongue. Highly recommend stopping by if you're in the neighborhood. read more

These chocolates are made daily on the premises from the finest ingredients. You can taste the difference - the outer shell is firm but soft to the tooth - no stale waxy sensation. I had very high expectatiopn of the berkeley chocolatier and I was definitely taken aback by the beautiful presentation. But the flavor itself just fell flat, and the price doesn't remotely justify the taste, especially when comparing with other luxury chocolatiers like la maison (who sells incredible traditional truffles at a lower price per piece). read more

I would rather have basic dark chocolate which may be a lot cheaper. I can get better chocolates from Trader Joes and pick any chocolate from the store with my close my eyes. I come primarily for the hot chocolate, but am always delighted by a free sample of their amazing, handcrafted chocolates. The hot chocolate is also a handcrafted effort, made to order while you wait. This turns out to be a fairly laborious affair, involving heating a pot of milk on a hot plate, gently adding a ladle of molten chocolate, and then using a hand mixer to blend everything to perfection. While it takes about 5 minutes from start to finish, the result is a sublime, milky hot chocolate, delicate and rich. read more

I am a chocolate importer and well known in the chocolate community. This year I was awarded Best Food & Wine Educator in Utah at the Salt Lake Magazine Annual Dining Awards (largely for my Intro to Fine Chocolate Class). After spending two years studying chocolate and then a pilgrimage to France to taste the best of the best, I tasted Chocolatier Blue. My first emotion was anger. I was angry because I felt like with all my studying and travels I was ignorant of something in my own backyard that was WAY better than anything I had tried in Europe. Berkeley, you stole Chris Blue away from us, but we will always be able to brag that he got his start in Utah. Chris, Keep your values of constant reevaluation and improvement and sooner than later the world will be forced to recognize you as the best. And at the incredibly reasonable prices you charge, you are sure to make a lot of jealous hater enemies in the industry, but who cares? You didn't get into this to make friends. nom nom nom! I can't wait to go back and try more. I went in with the boyfriend and we got several little treats. we got an espresso, a popcorn and champagne, a pom., a red wine and a sage and honey. we also picked up the dark chocolate orange peels an the almond coconut bar. My feelings? The espresso was too bitter for me, def. like tasting real espresso grounds (wellll that's what your doing). The popcorn and champagne was my favourite oddly enough, it was buttery and rich and NOM. the pom. was really juicy and a bit too intense. The red wine was a little too dark for me and at first, too bitter, but I tried tasting it just on the tip of my tongue and got the sweetness from it. The sage and honey was another favourite of mine, loved how the taste of sage lingered in your mouth after. The orange peels were REALLY REALLY good. but the coconut bar didn't catch my fancy. We have eaten great chocoates before. Like, in Paris. But now we've discovered truly stratospheric quality chocolates within a mile of home. (I'm a little worried.) We had lunch next door and headed for the car and noticed the unassuming storefront. Walked in and there was a lovely line of chocolates. The charming young women behind the counter offered us each a honey sage chocolate, which would not have been my first choice. It was intense and delicious. We bought a box of 6 to take home: Marzipan, Old-fashioned, Chili, Espresso (x2) and Currant. Unbelievably good. $1.50 each. Totally worth it. We will be going back for two-chocolate boxes for adult stocking-stuffers! read more

I got some chocolates here last minute for Mother's Day and they were a hit. They had a special going on for their big box so I got one for my bf's mom and a smaller box for his aunt. Yesterday, on my way to get my hair done by Kim at Eclipxe Salon on MLK Jr., I saw this place while I was walking on the other side of University Ave. I vowed to go there after on my way back to BART. I walked into Chocolatier Blue with my hair beautifully styled for a ceremony I was attending yesterday evening, feeling in a really good mood. I went inside, Chris Blue greeted me and I was just astounded by the looks of the truffles behind the glass cases. They were so beautiful, I couldn't take my eyes off them! He noticed my intrigue, told me about the unique Amedei chocolate they used, and gave me a lemon truffle to taste, in the shape of a leaf. I went to an even happier place at that moment, the texture of this chocolate was SOOOOOO smooth with a pleasant, delicate flavor! I was won over and I purchased the gorgeous heart shaped Pomegranate Caramel truffle for an affordable $1.50 to take home with me. It reflected my mood, I was so full of love. He told me to be careful when I eat this one, it's more messy than the lemon one (he noticed I was wearing the coral dress for the occasion that evening); I am thankful for the cautious statement. When I enjoyed the truffle the next day (while not wearing the nice dress luckily!), that caramel was so liquidy smooth, it just oozed out and got some on my chin! But the flavor and texture, wow, it was just surreal. I'm such a fan now, I'm spreading the word and I will have to return next time I come to downtown Berkeley. I'm very curious how their hot chocolate is, I cannot wait to give it a try! read more

I've been meaning to write a raving review for Chocolatier Blue a while back when I first came here for an Yelp event and learned the art of making delicate chocolate treats from the owner, Chris. I think if you just spent a couple of minutes talking to the owner, you will immediately find that he is in love with chocolate. One of my fav quotes from him from the event was when he said, "I dream, sleep, eat chocolate". He was so generous and open in sharing his knowledge and experience with everyone and you can really see that he just wanted people to enjoy his chocolate. Now on to the actual review of his chocolates. I recently got into a chocolate craze after getting a chocolate tasting at Allegio. I must clarify that the 2 shops are both amazing and the best in the Bay Area, I would say, but both are very different. Allegio sells high-end chocolate bars, like 100% cacao chocolate. Chocolatier Blue, on the other hand, sells chocolate treats that the owner and his wife carefully designed and crafted. I would say it's a treat for both the eyes and the mouth. Each chocolate is delicately designed and the flavors are carefully selected. The shop has its classic flavors and seasonal flavors, where the owner plays around with his creative juices to concoct one-of-a-kind chocolates. Here are my recommendations for the chocolates: **Caramel: this is the definitely the basic, safety chocolate if you want something good but don't want to play around with exotic flavors. The fleur de sel brings out a special kick for the chocolate. **Rocky road: this one was surprisingly good and I would highly recommend this one. **Ants on a log: imagine celery with peanut butter and raisins all in a chocolate. I definitely didn't think it was going to be good, but the chocolate was made so delicate that you could taste a bit of everything in it without a sense of incongruence. You could barely taste the celery flavor but definite a hint of peanut butter and raisin. **Pistachio: this is a creamy and rich chocolate for those of you who want a richer filling. The pistachio nutty flavor is not too strong, though I personally prefer that, but it's definitely a very rich velvety filling. Some of chocolates I haven't tried but would love to come back and try are the cookies & cream, pb crunch, and the Domori dark chocolate specialties. read more

These chocolates are just unbelievable. They taste perfect. All of them. Even flavors I wouldn't expect to like, like sweet corn, or raspberry. I don't even like rasberries, but the chocolate and the filling is so good, it doesn't even matter. read more

I've been waiting for this little store-front to open for months! I was excited to drop in yesterday on my way home from work. The store is small and simple, but clean and welcoming. They make all their chocolates on-site and the marble table is in full view. So, I hope that next time I stop in there's a show as well. The young woman working behind the counter was friendly and helpful. The first chocolate I had was the lime. Simply put, WOW. Not the most obvious flavor combo, this worked beautifully. The lime was quite tart, but did not overpower the chocolate. I also tried the hazelnut - prepare for a surprise. Rather than a firm, smooth gianduja, the center was flowing soft and speckled with pieces of nut (perhaps pralined?). Details aside, it was terrific. The fig was interesting, apricot was intense (but a bit bitter), the pistachio did not float my boat and the peanut butter and jelly made me want more! Every chocolatier should make a pb &J confection. On top of that, the prices for the individual pieces were more reasonably priced than most high-end chocolates of this sort. A definite bargain. Since their flavors are seasonal and some will change, I expect I will drop by often to see what is new and tasty. Especially since it is on my way home from work..... read more

This is a really cute tiny chocolate shop in downtown Berkeley. We just happened to be walking by and came across it. They have very well made (and beautifully decorated) specialty chocolates with really unique flavors. I believe on our visit, they had one flavor that they were giving out as samples. I could see this place as being a great place to get a gift for those chocolate lovers out there. The unique airbrushed designs/colors they apply to the chocolates themselves are unusual and pretty...while the flavors are original and make for some surprisingly good flavor combinations. The girl behind the counter was friendly and helpful...explaining the flavors, etc. These chocolates don't come cheap...it's kind of a splurge but well worth it if you're in the mood to get yourself or gift someone else something special. read more

As a biased lover of Belgian/Swiss chocolate, I can't say that this was the best stuff I've ever had. The hazelnut chocolate...didn't sink into my mouth instantly and didn't have that velvety smooth texture that's found in really orgasmic chocolate. The pomegranate has a good filling, it's got this kick that will set you off, but it wasn't out of this world. Would I go back? Maybe. But you can do better for $1.50 a chocolate. read more

My friend and I stopped in for some ice cream. It was absolutely delicious and flavorful and the customer service was exceptional. The girl who helped us has only recently moved to CA. She was so sweet and pleasant that she practically made the ice cream taste better just by her attitude. Wonderful experience. Can't wait to go back! I live in Philadelphia. My friend from Berkeley brought me a gift of a box of 6 chocolates and they were just fantastic. I loved that the chocolate was a very thin and delicate layer. It really let the flavor of the fillings shine. And the texture of the fillings was every bit as wonderful as the flavors: the definition of creamy. I dreamed of eating vats of the vanilla rum filing. The banana split was quite incredible as well. read more

We had parked on Bonita St and were walking to Angeline's. My other half & I are chocoholics. We were passing by, I saw chocolate, stopped in to look. The young woman greeted me and immediately handed me a free piece of chocolate to sample: Vanilla Rum. She also gave a sample to my other half. The chocolate pieces are $1.50 each, I ordered two: Hazelnut and Pb Crunch. Between the two, the Pb Crunch was the better piece. The hazelnut chocolate was great too. If I'm passing by again, I'll pick up another piece or two, but I will not go out of my way to visit. read more

Whenever I've procrastinated in getting someone a present, an elegant blue and white striped box from Chocolatier Blue is usually a good bet. People are always enamored of the little jewel chocolates, and they know (or at least suspect) that I didn't skimp on their gift...win! A little out of my price range for more than an occasional indulgence. I tend to stick to the tamer flavors, such as caramel, hazelnut, vanilla rum, PB crunch---though I do like passion fruit caramel. But much outside of that, sometimes the flavors lose me a bit. Call me old fashioned, but I like my chocolate to be....chocolate colored...? Hence why the flavors I mentioned above appeal to me more---they tend to fall within the color spectrum of brown. Really, I'm not sure what the intention of coloring the chocolates is...to tell the flavors apart? My own aesthetic sense would be to let to flavors speak for themselves. Or at least to use more natural, toned down looking colors...there is elegance in the understated. And Chocolatier Blue, in every other sense, exudes elegance--from its pale blue and white decor, down to the clean lines of the confectionery...and then there is this strange disconnect where the colors of the chocolates are concerned. The colors run the gamut from a light dusting to full on garish, saturated tones. It's as though their decoration was considered on an individual basis... They aren't paintings. They're chocolates. And even if they were paintings, as a body of work I would maybe expect to see a little more harmony in their appearance. It's like an artist's gallery opening where the artist hasn't had time to make a coordinated show, so instead just hangs up random, unrelated pieces. It's confusing. Other than that, there is a precision to the execution of the chocolates that I can appreciate, as if the exact thickness of the shell, and the exact texture of the filling is predetermined ---- so at no point when I am eating do I think to myself, "Well, this was clearly a bad batch" or "Grandma's been drinking in the kitchen." Everything feels deliberate. It's just a matter of personal preference as to whether the vision of Chocolatier Blue falls in line with whatever you happen to find delicious. Me? Honestly, I'm still deciding. And I am distracted by those technicolor hues. But for now, I am a fan of what they do at Chocolatier Blue. I have been meaning to visit their ice cream parlor location on 4th street to see if that will help me reach a final verdict... read more

I've passed by Chocolatier Blue many times, but I only went in recently, in a last-ditch effort to find a suitable gift for my chocolate-loving parents. It was well-worth the money & time & stomach-space. :) This chocolate shop was refreshingly unusual to me; it offered delectable chocolates in a very unpretentious atmosphere. Even the chocolates were fairly (yet divinely) straightforward. Though the grapevine boasts of Amedei chocolate and raw, organic ingredients imported from the best of the best, I was simply impressed by the imitable nature of the chocolates. They tasted exactly as their names suggested they would taste. The grapefruit w/ rosemary tasted of grapefruit, with a tang of sharp rosemary. The passion fruit caramel was simultaneously fruity and creamy. I really appreciate the chocolatier's risky willingness to mask the flavor of his Amedei chocolate with the addition of fruit juices. And the cashier was wonderfully accomodating; she filled me in on how/with what the chocolates are made, how the designs are airbrushed onto each piece, what the philosophy of the chocolatier is. She was also super friendly about letting me sample pieces here and there. My parents recieved a box of the following: caramel palet d'or pistachio grapefruit w rosemary passion fruit caramel chili sage honey cherry limeade smores At $1.50 apiece, these chocolates are fairly affordable for what they are. Each piece is an individual "experience" unto itself. You don't need two or three pieces to feel satiated. (unlike at Recchiuti, where one dismally small piece of tarragon-infused chocolate will run you $2+ even though you can't taste the tarragon... I swear... but this story is for a different review.) Bottom Line: Affordable chocolates for those special occasions where you need to impress. Yummy yum yum. read more

They have some interesting flavors though, and the best part is that they allow you to sample any flavor you want! but..then you feel guilty and end up buying an entire box of chocolates because they're so nice. tastewise, they're normal flavored chocolate - for me i really think that the plus comes from how pretty they are.. read more

This is the best chocolate shop I've ever been to. They make such beautiful little pieces of art with really unique combinations of flavors. They sell single pieces of chocolate, little packets of 3, 10, etc. and it's great. I bought my mom a box of hand-picked pieces for $25 or $30 for Christmas and she absolutely loved it.
