The last brand of Chocolate I would give a friend seeking to try American chocolate Hersheys. Why? Because Hersheys and snickers and twix are all mass produced, watered down versions of true American chocolate. Chocolate Covered has a warm exterior, a bit unassuming, but the inside is unprecedented in my experience with chocolate shops. Jack, the owner, has put in a great deal of work collecting chocolates from all over the world. He is very knowledgeable and will even recommend something based on your personality alone! Jack has got everything but Hersheys, from French chocolates to German to Spanish. If you're a cocoa head, ask about the 100% cocoa. They actually have more 100%s than 99s! Dark chocolate fans: If you want something local, try out tchos line. They also have some other SF made darks, plenty to choose from. If you REALLY love dark chocolate, ask for Blankart's 95%. It's from Spain and it's by far the best dark chocolate I've had (it's comparable to Green and Blacks 85% if you've had that, BUT BETTER). As for price, the chocolates are a bit pricey, but chocolate definitely falls into the category of "you get what you pay for". I will climb the chocolatey mountain to learn on the chocolatey alter of chocolately goodness. Just give me some chocolate for nurishment along the way...and hark, for they have goobers and goobers of chocolate, and harky hark, for it is goodly and occassionally strange, and yes indeed, they have your bacon chocolate that you haven't been able to find and people won't shut up about so you can try it.... The street names of San Francisco in small containers caught my attention. Most of the chocolates here are either made locally in San Francisco or in other parts of the Bay Area, or imported from Europe. Aside from my fascination of the interiors of this chocolate, I was impressed at the lady in the counter when she explained the different types, brands, and the origin of the chocolate at the store. She was very friendly accomodating the entire time and didn't mind when I took several pictures of the store. Also, a feeling of nostalgia swept over me like a tidal wave looking up at the different street names & local hang outs featured on their tin boxes. So effin cool. I even found my old street name-it was so random that they'd have this tiny street in the Mission. Lunch boxes are about $26, small tins $14 and big tins $18. Their selection of chocolate gave me diabetes just looking at it. They have everything from tea infused chocolate to dark chocolate/dried fruit combo candy bars. We went because someone in my group wanted to try the $20 Porcelana bar. I confess that its charm was wasted on me. We just went in to get graduation gifts for my daughter's friends. Ending their high school career with no graduation because of Covid has been a big loss. Chocolate can't make that up but the tins made by the owner of Chocolate Covered made great graduation gifts for our daughter and her friends. The owner even filled the tins with a variety of treats after showing me several options and the prices. The owner, Jack, makes tins of all SF streets, some restaurants, all the schools. They make very unique and personal gifts. If someone is moving away, you could get them a tin of the street they lived on too but this year, we were focused on graduation. Great place for gifts and it had to be one of the world's most diverse chocolate collections. A San Francisco treasure. Not to mention the fact that the owner is so fantastic and sweet and one of those great gentle people that calls everyone "Dear" abs means it. read more

DESTINATION! Jack knows his chocolate and is generous with tastes. I pretty much eat only 100% bars and as you may know 100% bars can be hardcore! Rather bitter, not everyone's cup of cacao tea that's for sure. But if you are like me and you don't want sugar, or you only will eat tiny amounts of it on your own terms, try the 100% bars. He manages to find some that aren't and I love them. There's one brand that sweetens with yacon syrup which won't jack your blood sugar. This is a great fun store ! A chocolate wonderland!!! I seriously think I could stay here all day and be happy. I have never seen such a large selection of chocolate from all over the world. It's very overwhelming at first if you do not have a baseline knowledge of specialty chocolates. But no worries, because the owner is more than helpful. I asked him one question about this chocolate bar I have been searching for for YEARS, and he knew about it at the drop of a hat AND had it. Alas, it was a Dolfin bar. We wandered in while browsing the shops in the neighborhood with no real intention of buying anything. However, there is so much to see in this cool shop. Tons of unique chocolates but what caught my interest were the magnetic boxes covering the walls which feature various San Francisco street names. My eyes landed on "Myra" and I knew I had to buy it for my daughter. Myra isn't a very common name, so finding something with her name on it felt like it was meant to be. Not only did the owner carefully wrap up my new little tin box, he agreed to pose for a photo with it so I could show my daughter later. He also explained exactly how the box was made and printed. The boxes may appear to be a simple DIY at first glance but they're actually very carefully made, going through a several step process to ensure they're high quality and long lasting. LADIES! I GET IT NOW! I have seen the light (and dark)! Why it took so long, I don't know. I've lived around the corner from Chocolate Covered for years, and only set foot inside last week. My taste runs more the savory than the sweet. CC had about every variety from nearly every continent with any seasoning, salt, or infusible legal substance imaginable. After several samples of "feel the burn" chocolate with chili, burnt caramel and a spectrum of sea salts, 24th St. looked different, somehow. Everyone looked better, happier, HOTTER. Did the temperature just go up? Why do I have the sudden urge to drop my panties? This I must research. According to thinkquest.com, Chocolate has a funny effect on human's nervous system. Chocolate contains chemicals that trigger the production of opioids. Opioids dull the pain and increase the feeling of well-being. Also, chocolate contains a brain neurotransmitter called -phenylethylamine. Studies have shown that people in love have unusually high amount of -phenylethylamine. It has the effect of high-energy and chocolate therefore, produces similar effects as being in love. I turned to look at my wife, who somehow looked the same as before the chocolate. Whenever I would walk by this store, all I could see was the painted Altoid boxes with SF street names in the window. "Tchotchkes...pish tosh," I would think, with a sniff and a wave of my hand. *But little did I know what magical surprises lay inside.* I just happened upon Mary A's review (http://www.yelp.com/biz/chocolate-covered-san-francisco#hrid:SwaMblpP27vjWBptou53Tg) extolling the virtues of Mo's Bacon Chocolate, and the proprietors of the store, and I had to check it out for myself. Walking up to the store, I saw the painted boxes ("ooooh, so THIS is the place*). So many different kinds of chocolate! I couldn't find the bacon bar, so I asked behind the counter. Apparently this is one of the hot items, as they already had a bar open for sampling (who wouldn't want to try this?). We left with a bar of Mo's, and four pieces of honeycomb to fuel us on the long hike to the Castro (with that extra little oomph for checking out the daddies at the Bar). The bacon chocolate is yummy (and, I've found, the perfect combo for PMS). But as I continue to eat it, I'm finding that the chocolate is really just a vehicle for the bacon - it's nice to find out some things about yourself through your candy choices...like the discovery that I actually DO prefer bacon over chocolate! Alright, I'm only going to say this once. I'm Ben P. I'm a notorious cowboy lawyer. And an occasional chocolate addict. I won't say my life is currently beyond my control (that was a few months ago, and it had little to do with chocolate), but I will admit that the people who work at Chocolate Covered know me and know my particular preferences. I prefer to think this says more about how friendly they are and less about my $50 biweekly chocolate habit. Stalkers note #9: Chocolate Covered also sells painted tins with the names of every single street in San Francisco. The tin for the street I live on actually features the BLOCK I live on. I bought one. The good news is that Noe Valley is at the top of a very high hill, whose slopes I must ascend every time I walk here. I like to think it's like climbing the mountain to speak to the wisened old guru and gain insights into life's deep mysteries. Except that, in the case, the guru is made of chocolate. Which, I think, makes it better. Also, this guru takes AmEx, which I appreciate. I will use my Members Reward points to buy a baboon heart when the inevitable massive coronary strikes. I was in the neighborhood and was told this is the store of the famous Mos' Bacon Bar so I had to stop in for a look-see. The store is very cute and filled with chocolate so who could complain? I looked for Belgium chocolate and they had it but it was pretty expensive. OK, not expensive when you consider the exchange rate and the shipping from Belgium and the chocolate itself but after living in Belgium and use to buying the same thing for next to nothing, it's really hard for me to cough 4x that for the same thing. So, needless to say, I left without the Cote d'Or 70% Cacao bars. However, I did get the small (.5oz) bar of Mo's Bacon Bar. It was 41% cacao with apple wood smoked bacon for $2.50. I already respect the company because from their ingredients, they make chocolate the proper way and they put the cacao percentage on the front. YEA. When I first heard bacon chocolate I thought it would be gross. But I made some bacon chocolate cupcakes that were really good. You don't taste the bacon at first, just the chocolate and the bacon is an aftertaste. With the Mo bacon chocolate the first nibble was the chocolate and then it sat in my mouth melting. Chocolate. Then there it was, the bacon. A faint taste, more of an aftertaste, but pleasant. I expected lots more bacon flavor but it was much more subtle. Very, very good. read more

I've been to Fog City News, its closest rival in the chocolate department, but it lacks a certain charm that Chocolate Covered has. A narrow shop showcasing a vast amount of chocolate, locally and from around the world, the other draw to this place are their novelty lunch box cases. Though, I managed to fend off the urge to buy a couple of their smaller tins, I couldn't resist purchasing a tin with my street name. (You know you've got a good thing going when you influence your customers to buy things they don't really need.) I walked out $30 poorer, but was so mesmerized by the selection and conversing with employee, Pali (of Rocket Dog Rescue fame), that I didn't mind all that much. Her and Jack, the owner, were unbelievably helpful in selecting bars based on my tastes. Like others have mentioned, the chili and pistachio bark is a must buy. My only gripe is that the bars are a bit pricey--especially the ones that I can buy at Whole Foods for at least a dollar less. When you say you can get something at Whole Foods for cheaper, I think that's a safe bet that you're charging too much. But overall, I adore Chocolate Covered and will make it a point to patronize more often, not only for myself, but for others; their tins would make for a great gift. read more

The proprietor of Chocolate Covered is a delightful pillar of local flavor, and the shop is filled with the most elite echelons of artisanal chocolate in myriad varieties. Also, this is the place to go if you're one of those people who holds up the line at Peet's while you contemplate the subtle differences between a Columbian bean and an Ethiopian bean, because lucky for you, elitist prick, chocolate beans afford one the same opportunity for pretentious differentiation of flavor compounds between regional bean varietals. My favorite is the Venezuelan. Naturally sweet and a little spicy. But really, the thing I love most and hold so dear about this delightful shop is the picture printed tin boxes. Ordinarily, I am anti-tchotchke, but these tins are special because they feature San Francisco street signs. I sent someone to pick up an expensive (~$200.00) chocolate order here. I wasn't initially aware of the prices, since I haven't been to this place in person. I received a hand-written receipt without itemization or prices. I purchased 25 bars of high-cacao chocolate (about $200.00 worth). When I examined the receipt, I thought it seemed a bit pricey, so I started doing the math to try to figure out what the prices actually were, and I called the owner of the shop, and he told me what they were. When I called him back to thank him for his assistance and patience, he took the opportunity to 'school me' about why his prices might appear high in some cases. That was fairly rude, especially since I was already feeling the sting in my wallet. 'This is a boutique, not a supermarket' he began. 'I charge twice what I pay'. I asked if, under some circumstances, he might slightly discount a large order. 'Not really. We get large orders all the time. $700.00.' Alright. He's welcome to his business philosophy. $100 dollars of my 200 dollar order went to his pocket, costs or no. And I wish him well. But for a shop that sells sweets? This transaction left me with a bad taste in my mouth, and it wasn't just the fact that he is actually selling at far above retail prices, which is sketchy in general.
