Finally popped in after walking my dogs around the Haight. I popped in during an evening dog walk & it was game over. Inside, the shop bursts with color, rows of gummies, chocolates, and nostalgic treats that make you feel like you've stepped into a real-life candy playground. The selection is seriously impressive. Think sour watermelon slices, Swedish-style raspberry gummies, cola bottles, peach rings, rainbow belts, giant marshmallow twists, Haribo classics, and even fun themed candies like frogs, sharks, and gummy strawberries. Everything is neatly packaged and easy to browse, which makes it extremely dangerous for anyone prone to impulse snacking. Even my pup tried to "shop" the lower shelves -- apparently the scent of sugar is universally appealing. The staff is as sweet as the inventory. They greeted me right away, offered recommendations, and seemed genuinely excited about their collection. Prices feel reasonable for the neighborhood, especially given the variety and the care clearly put into stocking the shelves. Why do we go out anymore? To see stuff. New stuff. Stuff to delight the eye. And so it was on a sunny Saturday that the wife said she wanted to check out "this candy story in the Haight." We go in for a visit. Serious ambiance vibe! Featuring obscure to me musician (X-Ray Ted) on the store's own curated playlist. I immediately started thinking 'this place is too cool for me' but hey, it's small, we won't be long. Then I noticed they had the candy of my childhood, things you rarely find, like Big Cherry and Rocky Road. Bespoke bags of candy from around the world and museum-quality Japanese KitKats and Asian Lay's chips. The guy behind the counter, Max, turns out he's also the owner. Great to talk to, knowledgeable and friendly. This is the kind of place San Francisco used to have lots of -- weird, personal, and good quality -- places that are fewer everyday. Max says Candy's is popular with the locals, and it should be with anyone who considers themselves a true San Franciscan, because it captures the nascent spirit of the city while paying respect to the candy traditions of the past. p.s. I have a new favorite small business in SF, and it's this perfect little candy shop. The owner, Max, sells an amazing assortment of local, international, and hard to find candy and snacks, all of it fresh and delicious. He knows the flavor profile and backstory of everything he sells, and he's so calm and welcoming. We came in because I was looking for Swedish candy. Of course he had all the BUBS, and he gave me a sample of one so I could try before I bought. I've heard that Swedish candy is hard to find and shipping can take a while, so the freshness of Max's selections really surprised me. It's all beautifully packed in sturdy resealable bags, and the flavors just pop. My husband found a couple of candies here that he hadn't seen since his childhood (U-No bar, Botan rice candy), and he loved the store's Spotify playlist. I stumbled upon this store today and loved it. There's a wide selection of not only candy, but salty snacks and drinks, too! Love the different countries flavors that are available: Japanese unique flavored kit kats, Thai-flavored Lays chips (tea leaf salad flavor, salted egg yolk flavor, sweet basil flavor). Love coming here! The owners are the sweetest (no pun intended). The selection here is great, you can find Asian candy, European candy and the regular American ones like sour patch kids.
